In spring 1980, Severus Snape hears a portion of a prophecy that will change the course of wizarding and Muggle history. The Dark Lord must choose a boy, but which? Snape is sent to discover the boy’s identity, but the answers he seeks are not to be found in his world. Rated M for violence and eventual sexual situations. SS/HG.

Twentysomething lover of Harry Potter fic. I have served as a beta (btw, i am P.I. accredited) for many authors, and welcome the opportunity to do more. I also serve as co-moderator of the LJ community ptterpr0nprmpts along with the fantabulous tonksinger.
I've been around the fandom for a long time... probably since 2003. I've spent most of it lurking, but published some stories under an old pseudonym. Upon entering the fandom, I immediately became a fan of the Snape/Granger pairing. I prefer Hermione to be a bit older, but have been known to deviate from that preference. Other ships that I prefer include Draco/Ginny, Draco/Harry, Snape/Lupin, and Snape/McGonagall. I am open to most ships and recommendations, as ultimately it is this universe that I love.

Actually the chapter title gives me hope. Vain hope, I'm afraid ... If even Snape wishes her to be with Ron then I guess that was it. On the other hand - aren't there sort of parallel universums? Can't you wave your magic wand over your keyboard and ...

I fiercly love this story as much as I fiercly hate to see Severus die. The plot so far is beautifully crafted and I look forward to stealing moments of re-reading this one and finding out what's to come.

It's just perfect--Severus' journal/letters--perfect--I'm in awe and admiration of how you've so lovingly brought everything full circle for Severus and Hermione, and for Hermione and Ron and Harry. I think your enriched depictions of human relationships and nature achingly highlights and strums our heartstrings, even mercilessly so - lol!, with these beloved characters... Just a masterpiece of storytelling and a true gift of love to the fandom-- I love it (even though it's driving me crazy, more than usual - lol! ) that it is *true* to Canon, *the hero dies in this one*--but not forgotten!-- and that such an awesome tale has been interwoven within!

I like that you held back the title to use as a chapter title. It's good. So is the song. Fab writing, too.

Your title made me giggle before I read the chapter because of the fact that despite your warnings, everyone seemed to think that you wouldn't do it. You insisted over and over and still they doubted. This felt like your final attempt to sway the masses by shouting in their faces "What the hell is so hard to understand? HE IS GOING TO DIE!" We have been so trained that he lives that we can't fathom a story where he doesn't. Which is part of what is so great about this story. This was another teary chapter. I love all of the times that he dreams of running and never going to the shack, or seeing the healer, or whatever, but they are just fantasies to keep him going. He is strong enough and dedicated to his cause that he doesn't waver. It was so good for Hermione to get to read this personal journal, I think.I didn't expect that she was going to lay it all out for the boys, and still I wonder if she is going to tell all, or how much she will disclose. I do hope things work out for her and her boys. I feel confident in that regard, because if you had them fall apart after all of this it would feel like it was all for nothing. Of course, never say never. You did kill off the hero, afterall. *grins*

omg if i had it all fall apart after this (which would be *hilarious*), i'm pretty sure fandom would figure out where i live and leave a dark mark over my house... i was seriously upset when i caved to peer pressure and changed the title of this story to "yet everything stays the same." i hadn't even though to reuse the title in any other way until it just kind of came to me writing this chapter. and then i couldn't *not* do it. and the best part? people still think i'm going to ruin it with a ss/hg HEA ending. suckers.
Response from HBAR (Reviewer)
I have to say, killing off Snape sucks. But, it would be a huge disservice to this wonderfully crafted story if you changed that. I'm still hopeful for a happy ending though, because I think it can still exist despite the hero's death. If not, well, I'm going to need another tissue warning.
Response from astopperindeath (Author of Yet Everything Stays the Same)
there will definitely be positive resolution. and after all this, i'm surprisingly okay with snape being dead now. and i've stopped hating ron. those effers at the "hermione in fanfic" panel at infinitus 2010 can suck it (even though they were right...) :p

Great story, but Severus hasn't convinced me that it is better if he dies or that she should be with Ron or anyone else for that matter.I was honestly hoping that what Severus wrote would convinceme it was the right thing..He actually has something to live for and he is throwing it away with both hands ..For a hero's death...

Gaaaaaaahhhhh! Yes, I'm wishing you would have kept this as a longer chapter as well. But this will just keep me on the edge of my seat until the next chapter! I will say that this one made me tear up more than the last chapter. His last two journal entries were done so well I could easily see them, and they were tear jerking.

Another lovely chapter! I appreciate the way that, after giving us the whole final-battle thing from Snape's own point of view, you now give us the two, somewhat contradictory views he writes to Hermione. Very revealing. (The loose floorboard was a nice touch, too.) I like Snape's take on Ron (not a Ron hater at all, here), and Ron seems to justify that in his generous reaction to Hermione's note. (Great writer's trick, by the way, marking their emotional reset with so many allusions to the troll and Hermione's first year.) And the pensieve... I really look forward to Harry and Ron's reaction to the whole truth. As for "The Hero Dies in this One," it's a great title. J.K.R. might even have used it for chapter 34--it's much more evocative than "The Forest Again"--or for Book Seven itself. But you did tell us from the start that you were going to be true to canon, and I am now reconciled to the fact that you include the much-maligned epilogue in that canon. But I can't help but remember that after "Nineteen Years Later" comes twenty years later (where have I heard something about "twenty years" before?); and the true-love's kiss curse; and that Dumbledore knew "everything," and that Voldemort (the possessor of the silver Time-Turner) was not so far away when Snape died; and that odd note to Hermione that said to send him back, that he'd be fine. And of course there's also the matter of your pen name. I won't be devastated if I'm wrong; it's a lovely tragic story, with a hopeful twist at the end, if it comes out as you seem to be trying to tell us it will. But I really don't believe you. Great work, though!

I wouldn't ask you to do that. Veritaserum will make your keys stick way worse than coffee.... And besides, I wouldn't believe your lyin' keyboard unless you'd drunk it yourself.I share your love of Dobby. JKR really was a killer of innocents: Hedwig, Dobby, Fred, Severus.... (hint, hint)I've been thinking about your story--a real tribute. It occurs to me that Snape's initial diaries (the ones he takes back to 1980) were already written--although he says in them that he knew Hermione would be injured (from the diaries) but not how--and yet those diaries (when Hermione reads them from the diaries he'd copied) give the details about the True Love Curse. Is he writing those diaries, or just reading them? I'd assume just reading them, since writing in them would be changing history and since he buys another, different, set of diaries to write to Hermione exclusively. Does that mean there are actually *two* Severuses, the secret-writing diarist Severus and the under-the-floorboard diarist Severus? (And if there *are* two of them, might not one be left on the floor of the Shrieking Shack while the other fast-forwards to June 2018?)
Response from astopperindeath (Author of Yet Everything Stays the Same)
you're trying way too hard. there is only one diarist, and it is Snape. he has to recopy them in each cycle of the timeline. and snape was most decidedly not an innocent. he of his own free will signed up to work for the most evil man (other than dumbledore) in the wizarding world and no amount of good action changes that. definitely not an innocent.

I can't wait for next week to see how Harry and Ron react! I'm sure it promises to be interesting.Loved the notes to Hermione. They were absolutely heartbreaking and perfectly captured a man trying to come to terms with his own mortality. I definitely needed tissues reading them.

Oh, his letters to Hermione were awesome. I can *totally* see him, weeks before, writing with a bit of bravado about how he's OK with what's going to happen and that he understands why. I can also **totally** see him, the day before the battle - facing his own mortality - not wanting to die. Heartbreaking. Very well done!

Mmmmmm. Will she tell them everything she knows, find blissful acceptance and mature understanding of death, and then fall into the arms of the man who she had consistently scorned simply because her recent lover - come - hero has told her to? (On account of the fact that his Dad is a better man than he currently is.) Even though he is bullish, sulky, and more than a bit thick...? Why isn't she still shouting at the portrait, who is, apart from the tricky issue of being paint and board, essentially the bloke who has just told her that he loves her? Hugely intrigued and desperate for the next chapter -- I love this story! :Px
Response from astopperindeath (Author of Yet Everything Stays the Same)
haha, if you think she'll just fall into ron's arms immediately, you clearly think i write things out of character ;). and ron isn't thick. at all. you can't think that high school boys have the emotional capacity of men--he has to grow into it. judging adult!married!Ron by the behavior of a high school boy really isn't fair. by that token, basically no men (or no *one*, really) would ever be marryable.
Response from Proulxes (Reviewer)
*Snort!* I trust you... But he's still lying to her in the Epilogue That Was over passing his driving test... so I've very much yet to be convinced that he's fabulous husband material.... ;)

This has become such a fabulous story. Somehow, as with the original books, I feel fairly certain I know roughly how it will come out, but I can't help but speculate about how you're going to do it. My current bets would be either that the picture is going to turn out to be far more than an ordinary wizarding picture or that sometime, long or not so long after the final events of the last chapter, a badly injured Severus Snape, bleeding from the neck and clutching a Time-Turner, is going to show up on Hermione's doorstep. Fingers crossed that it's something like that, anyway. Re-reading, I can't help but wonder about one line in the previous chapter: the note revealed by the Marauder's Map password, in which Severus (when? when did he learn the password?) says "Just send my younger self home—I will be fine." Was that an error, or will it be significant?

Only 3chapters left? This is the most unique plot I have read I try to figure how you plan to work this out other than going with letting history take its course....does hermione have access to a time turner?

Arghhh! It all seems so fatalistic... He accepts what he 'needs' to do to keep Hermione safe, even though it leads to his death. So noble and self sacrificing. This may be how it plays out (and if it does, how unusual is this story?!!), but I wonder if you've got something alternative up your sleeve in the next three chapters...? I think the crucial question is -- what is Hermione's next move? I can't believe that she'd just accept the undying (er, okay, he's dead, but still able to talk to her and think from the portrait) the undying gift of his love for her and not DO anything about it. Can't wait for next week.

Thank you for the reconciliation, and also, there is such a beauty of selflessness, of warmth and love, with Severus wishing her happiness and fulfilment in life with someone else beyond 'them', something which he cannot be there for her and participate in her life with, wishing to help her move on... Lovely!

Not meaning for this to sound too immoral (lol!) but just because someone breaks up/off one relationship doesn't mean that Hermione never had and still has feelings for Ronald (within this); as was depicted in the earlier chapters and with Harry's letter, there will always be a certain level of feelings for each other within the Golden Trio, her love for Harry as a brother, and for Ron, for a while, as the love in her life but then it stalled at one place as other needs and feelings of fulfilment took her into another direction, as a curator for Snape, etc. - my long-winded point is that Hermione is not a cold-hearted b**** and still 'loves' Ron on a certain level, how could she not after all they've been through, since childhood on, and for me, it's entirely plausible that he comes back into her life on some level, and something of true caring/affection could develop further, especially with Severus' blessing and there to help her work through getting on with her life... It's heartbreaking, but... xxx

I'm all teared up, on the verge of bawling like a baby, and don't know where to start... so, I'll try to do this is some type of order: Loved their love-making, the erotica--it is so very tangible, that pleasuring and giving affirmation to their beloved is of the utmost importance, both their needs, neediness and dare I write *love* for one another erupting in this insanity and seemingly the futility of his situation---so I'm glad both Hermione & Sev threw their hats to the wind about it and seized the moment...I started really choking up with the older Sev and younger's conversation... even though we knew this was coming--him having to go back, but so soon? so suddenly? just when the poor bast*** experienced something wondrous, joyous that he'll cherish for the rest of his life, give him strength to endure? I know--that's part of the whole point--which makes this story-telling even more profound and poignant *blubbering* See what you've done, stopper* Turned me int this mushy, gushy lump of sentimentalityBesides bringing something completely fresh to the table, the brilliancy of this story, the fine-weaving of present and past elements for ALL characters involved, from the foreshadowing of Sev's nose-bleeding and his death, to foretelling how Hermione will spend the rest of her life, etc.--is just all truly a powerful, profound experience!
