Oh, Severus! When will you ever get a break? When will you learn to treasure yourself as we do and stop doing stupid, brave, foolhardy, noble things? I enjoyed the characterization of Spleen and Restitutus (someone's going to have some explaining to do - if he survives) and am glad to see Harry and Ron ready to save the day. Some things should never change. :) Thanks for a lovely chappie; can't wait to read more. Nudge nudge. Wink wink.

"Restitutus looked down at his hands, flexing his fingers and turning them over to see the veins roll under his skin as he moved them." I wonder if he trying to see if reptilian features had begun to take over his skin? Hermione's little show of magic appears to have the same effect on Restitutus that it had had on Marcella when they were in the cavern.
The scene Hermione found in the Forum was a sickening display of what Sabazios was capable of doing, but I know Hermione has seen this kind of evil before and knows it can be defeated. I think Marcella will prove trustworthy, but I don't know if Restitutus will be able to resist the call of the magic that ran through his blood just a short while ago. And where is Conviva? I hope he is still alive.
Now that Hermione knows the people wandering in the square are mindlessly avoiding the piles of bodies–and the Temple of Apollo– I hope she will also realize that the temple is the place to find Severus. She and Severus are connected by blood and by their magic, and she felt his agony the moment Sabazios cast the Crucio. I hope he can feel her magic, too, and become stronger.
The clever plan Ron and Luna concocted to get around Professor Spleen's certain objections was brilliant! I especially liked Ron's "slug" gambit to run the remaining occupants out of the lift. I'm looking forward to finding out what happens when Harry and Ron get Hermione to Hogwarts.
Thank you for another doozie of a chapter. Beth

My pleasure!! I'm glad you liked it. The next chapter's 'The Big One'... If you get my meaning. And you probably do because you really seem to 'get' this story, Beth! Are you peeking over my shoulder as I write??!! Next chapter will be up soon, in about two weeks' time, the lovely admins say, and I hope that you like it! Pxx

This is one of the most suspensful stories I have read on line. And you have kept it up for so many chapters. Well done. I can hardly wait to see how you resolve this. And will we ever find out how Sabazios came to be the way he is?

! The story is fully planned (including all the answers to the mysteries that are ongoing) and I'm currently writing the final chapters now. It should finish at around 30 chapters, muse willing! You will have a good idea of how Sabazios came to be as he is, although I try to leave as much to the individual imagination as I can. This story came about due to a single line in one of the Harry Potter books. All will be revealed! Best wishes, Px

My 18 year old went to Greece and Rome and Naples on a Classical Studies school trip earlier this year. Saw all sorts of awesome things. :)

That papyrus sounds intriguing. Hoping Sev and Hermione stop working at cross-purposes and start pulling together soon. Things is getting tough.

Coming... Coming... We are building to the final confrontations in Pompeii. I hope the frustration at their being apart adds to the satisfaction when they get together...! Px

Thank you for posting on a Saturday--I know you did it just for me--so I could actually take the time to learn more about the history behind the explosion as I read. I was familiar with Pliny the Younger in a different context, but didn't realize he and his uncle were so intimately involved in this event. Of course, now I want to brush off my passport so I can visit the ruins in person...Thanks for crafting a meticulously researched (and entertaining) story.hm88

It was my pleasure (actually it had nothing really to do with me but I was so delighted to see my chapters coming up so quickly and on a weekend for you that I'm happy to take the credit!). Pompeii is amazing - but Herculaneum is more intimate, and you can see more complete ruins there because of the way that the two cities were buried (explosive pyroclastic flow versus slower moving mud flow). The sites are wonderful. If you can go there though, go to the Naples Archaeological Museum too - because most of the finer mosaics and uncovered 'finds' are there. Thanks so much for continuing to review. Next up - violence and trauma and an exploding volcano -- FINALLY!!!! Px

WOW! Wonderful! all of the details '... wearing a frustrated look' -lol! Of course, she'd be frustrated! Just fantastic having her appear now in the mosaic 'portrait' for all to see--plunging the reader and the other characters into this profound dilemma. Love the details of Hermione reacting to not having her wand, underwear and the reality of when and where she is--wonderful!xx

Yup--you've whammied me hard with your narrative spell--completely intrigued and all gaga about it! Love the descriptive narrative and details, the overlapping of what's going on simultaneously in Hogwarts and the archaeological dig in Pompeii--the numerical codes/clues and, of course, our beloved Potions master being at the centre of the ancient world as well as contemporary one; the bittersweet persona of Hermione reflective and comparing her and Snape's lives--lovely, lovely work!

Several things in this chapter really clicked with me. The first was when Severus was slowly regaining consciousness: The ancient Time-Turner about his neck was hanging on its thin golden chain in front of him, catching the early morning sunlight that was slanting in through the roof. He blinked stupidly at it as it turned lazily on its chain. Its sands were fused... useless.... A few inches below it, his mother's perfume phial swung gently on its slightly longer chain. As he breathed in and out, gasping for air, the two pendants began to intertwine with each other.Another was Hermione's dream:“Well, it’s not the same as the one I used in our third year. Look, the writing on the rings is different. It’s not really writing at all. They’re ancient runes, I think… I wonder if it still works. It looks really old. See, the rings are not quite even. The rings on the Time-Turner that Professor McGonagall gave me to use were smoother and more regular in shape.”When I coupled those things with Harry's explanation of Septima's realization that blood activated the runes around the mosaic in the Headmistress' office... well all I could think of was (1) thank goodness Hermione isn't where Marcus Fiducius thinks she is, (2) thank goodness Severus isn't dead, and (3) thank goodness that Marcus is driven to learn the secret to the Metamorphmagus Potion so he's interested in keeping Severus alive. With Hermione having realized that simply touching her bloody hand to the portrait in Severus' house would activate a portal, and Severus wearing both his different kind of Time-Turner and his mother's perfume phial cum Horcrux (that have become intertwined), AND his having a bloody mouth... Once again I have no idea if my thinking is even remotely on the horizon, but all these threads are just too delicious for me to ignore. This story ranks right up there with any of the Harry Potter books or any of the works of Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, or J.R.R. Tolkien. Go you!!!Beth

Brilliant analysis (again!). You are absolutely going in the right direction. I am so pleased that you are enjoying the story (and I'm blushing like mad to be compared to Tolkein, Rowling, Christie or Conan Doyle btw -- thank you very much). The next chapter's in the queue, and I'm working hard on the final chapters right now! Thanks again for your review. Best wishes, Pxx

Yay! What an action filled chappie. I'm glad you haven't forgotten about the "contemporary" world and thank the gods Hermione is so clever. Now she just has to save Severus, Marcella and Conviva; reunite Snape with his soul; whip some demonic butt; get Snapey-poo back to the "present" and make sure he never gets away from her again. Not necessarily in that order, but one never can tell with time trael fics.

Running 'round in circles at a time like this is not good for the odds of survival!
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
Confusion, panic and confounding expectations... That's what I was going for. A messy and incoherate situation in which they are making things up as they go along. Not great for them, but gives us time to trace their developing feelings and get the full horror of what Sabazios unleashed would be like.... Px

Interesting chapter - I like how everyone had been sleeping and dreaming about people dear to them. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel. I hope Severus makes it through with Hermione. It would be a shame to lose each other now.
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
The end is definitely in sight. Events will be happening thick and fast from now on. The clock is ticking - in many ways this chapter was the calm before the new storm of the volcano and Sabazios rising. Oh, and I'm a fan of happy endings (although I cannot promise not to torture them both a bit more before the end). Nuff said! Px

A very bad timing, Harry! That's a great memory of Robert's there! Wonderful idea, although I truly wonder about his sense of responsibility--what a HUGE amount of sugar! Lovely idea how Hermione's accidental magic manifests--so constructive and very Hermionish!Could we hope that Pliny used poetic liberties in advancing the event a few hours, so that Hermione has a few hours more to find Severus? Or is it better to have that Dark wizard and entourage buried as soon as possible?

Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
Ha! Great idea! And, given what he's walking into, that would be shocking and funny at the same time. Unfortunately, she's not thinking that clearly. She's already gone off on a fool's errand into to the city -- now she wants to try to get a way back to her own time, because the volcano is due to erupt in a few hours' time and she needs to find a viable escape route before finding Severus. Thanks for your review! Px mmmm. Patronuses....

!! Thank goodness the next chapter is in the queue because, if the suspense wasn't shivery good before, now it's multiplied ten-fold! Ack, what will happen next? I can't wait. I also find Severus' attitude interesting here and wonder if he's been affected in some manner by the way she threw away the vial; I'm uncertain of many things, but I love it and I look forward to more, as always. Also, the escape scene was intense and brutal; you wrote that part very well. Lastly, Severus, you must remember the words Conviva delivered on Hermione's behalf, now that you've remembered the events yourself! But I can't fault him for being so distracted.
Response from Proulxes (Author of Anima Mea)
I want him to be a mess here - you've nailed it: distracted. Something is going on about the vial - but it is also deeper than that, too (spoliers!). I'm glad you liked it,
