It began with a letter, and a secret. Was it madness to trust? Was it a secret salvation? Or was it all just lying on a ring, in the end...? (***HBP SPOILERS***)

I have to apologize to everyone, period. Real life swallowed me whole, as I have been struggling to make a living writing original fiction over the last 8 years. It has not been easy, & has been complicated by health issues. I hope people can forgive my long silences. Trying to make enough money to live on from writing is a lot harder--waaaay harder--than it looks. (At least I didn't leave any posted fanfics unfinished.)
Anyhoo...
These stories are works of parody (& thus are allowable under US law), and are not written for profit. Just for fun. I'm not making any money off of any fanfics, nor will I ever. I'm just playing around in other writers' universes.
...I am, however, making something of a living off my own stories. (If anyone wants to play around in my universes, you may visit my website, www.jeanjohnson.net, and look up my policy on Fanfics & Fanarts. It's reasonable enough and fairly easy to follow, too...)

Reviews for In Annulo
I thought this was a fabulous story from start to finish and I have spent the last few days reading it and hoping it would never end! I thought this was one of the most plausible ways for Severus and Hermione to end up together, and I thought you had a very well-thought out plotline. From start to finish this was simply an excellent story and I look forward to reading more from you! Thanks!

Thank you very much! I worked hard to make this one skim as close to canon in style and plot possibilities as was then possible.(I'd have responded sooner...but if you think this was good, imagine what I've been doing with all the original plot-bunnies that have been occupying my attention for the last couple of years...)~Lotm
oh wow! man i loved this story, so much so.. i did little else in the two days it took me to read it.. i loved how deep the characters were, and the intrigue(sp?) the entire story had. again loved it!
this was a unbelievablly fantastic story you do have a talent for drawing the reader in and makeing them believe and feel for the characters in your story russel was great there were times that you just knew he was snape and then something would happen and you would think ok maybe not this story kept me on the edge of my seat having me want more and not being able to wait for the next chapter i look forward to reading more of your work if its anything like this good job thanks vicky

Thank you!~Lotm(I'd have responded sooner, but I've been buried under a bunch of original plot-bunnies all this time...)
Great Chapter. Just one little observation if you don't mind? You might want to change your chapter number, it should be XIX not IXX. Just thought I would mention it. Typos do happen. But I need to go and read the other chapters before I have a whithdrawal from not reading. lol Keep on writing.

wow. i've just spent the last 4 days reading this fic almost nonstop, and i have to say that it was completely worth it! This is honestly one of the best Snape/Hermione fics i have ever read...and believe me, i've read a lot of them.Every single aspect of the story came together so perfectly. The love that developed between Hermione and Severus was so believable and understandable. It almost brought me to tears when he was in the court room suffering from the Veritaserum poisoning but told Hermione how much she meant to him it was so touching!! And I loved how you did everyone justice by staying relatively true to their characterizations. For example, I thought Ron was absolutely PERFECT. Through every situation, I thought he reacted exactly how his character was like in the book, you know, passionate, sometimes a bit daft, but not a COMPLETE idiot! Anyway, i was also happy to see Harry portrayed as i always saw him in the books: HOT HEADED and HEADSTRONG. He was completely annoying by the end of the story, but not really in a bad way lol. I loved how he apologized to Severus in the end, as well. And Dumbledore...poor Dumbledore I actually did shed a tear when he passed away. This was the first story where i didn't really resent him for his machinations in everyone's lives. He certainly did everything in his power to make up for the pain he caused in poor Severus' life AND he owned up to his entire involvement in the war. I thought his death in the story was one of the nicest endings that any author has ever given him..I actually think that's why I liked this story so much. Everyone, who deserved a happy ending, more-or-less got one. Even Draco got himself a fair trial and also practically disowned his parents (a little fact, which i loved only because of my unhealthy obsession with him lol). And of course i was salivating at the mouth at Hermione and Severus' happy ending because it was just SO PERFECT, it could have been in a romance novel lol. But of course, after all that those two have been through in this story, they really deserve to have the perfect happy ending. So congrats to you for writing such a great story!! I'll be sure to read your other fics soon, so you'll probably see another one of my long-ass reviews again lol.Oh and here are some other emoticons i thought related to you as well...

Lol, thank you, thank you. *glompcuddlehug* Thank you!Sorry it took me a while to read this review, but I've been kidnapped and held captive by my original plot-bunnies for the last...um...what year is it, again? This was my reaction to reading book 6. I still have not read book 7, nor do I think I ever will. MY Snape gets a happy ending, dammit. This was something I thoroughly enjoyed doing, an exercise in single-person point of view for the entire story, and an exercise in skimming as closely as I could reason possible to an existing canon.(I also got noticed by a publishing house editor round about the middle of writing this one, which led to my original fictions getting published, squee! The downside, though, is the aforementioned plot-bunny infestation)Though it's been a handful of years since I wrote it, I am still honored to hear my storytelling skills are still being enjoyed by everyone.*hugs*~Lotm
What a great story!!! I click 'random story', get something new and love it. I must admit, I'd thought that it was Snape and discarded it, then had an 'I knew it' moment when it came out. You did well keeping me guessing.I love your stories, glad I read this one.

This fic was truly amazing! I just don't think i have adequate words to describe how much i enjoyed it. Thank you! :)
It took Hermione a moment to realize Arabella was Mrs. Figg’s first namebefore bed,” Isabella Figg addedLol?Just thought I'd point it out cos im pedantic. But I absolutely adore this story to the very bone so far! I love it!!:PVery original concept compared to alot of SS/HG stories, indredibly interesting!

I am not sure if this is the 7th or 8th time I have read through the whole story, (and some chapters a couple of times more:-), but I do know that it won't be the last. Reading "In Annulo once a year", or year and a half, is like meeting an old, dear friend. I have said so before, and it still stands; this story is the very best HG/SS story I have ever read! There has been a few stories that have been brilliant, and got close to share (but not overthrow) "In Annulo"'s place at the top, but towards the ends, not been able to. For me, what makes this story so special, happens towards the end: when Voldiebutt is dead, and the "happy ending" is closing: Way to often at this point, Severus turns "all Professor" again, and either tells Hermione (if he not only shows her a cold shoulder) that whatever they shared through the war is void due to him probably being sent to Azkaban, getting the kiss or something like that. Just as often she is told that she is to young go know her own heart, she will probably find someone younger to love later on, she should finish school etc etc etc. And if they are married, he either disolve the marriage, or tries to do so. Basicly: Not only don't Severus treat her as an equal, Hermione allows him to do so, she weaps, lump her shoulders and are patiently waiting for him to decide when it suits him to accept that she loves him. Your Hermione would have hexed his balls of with a painfull curse had he tried something like that in your story, and Severus (thank God) have the balls to not only love her and admit to doing so when everything is kept as secret as possible, he stands by her and their love when it really matters the most, when it is the hardest to do so; When everyone want's to tear them apart, when the media, the Ministry, the Wizarding World, all have their eyes on them, and that is some of what makes this story better than the rest:-)) (you can add brilliant plot and wonderful writing:-))
Response from ladyofthemasque (Author of In Annulo)
Lol, thank you. Truth be told, I despite Wimpy!Hermione character types. She's not that kind of a woman, and it would be a sin against her characterization to make her one. (Not to mention a sin against her intelligence to try and pair her up with Ron. Shame, Ms. Rowling...tsk tsk tsk. Be true to your characters, and don't force them to do things they patently wouldn't do. Anyhoo...)No, I figure Snape knew he had a good thing, or at least a potential good thing, in advance when he planned for Hermione to be the one to receive the communication ring.~Lotm
That has to be one of the very best stories I've ever read! I'm left absolutely speechless at that, it totally blew me away! And OMG it's long! I swear, it's definately trumped HP7 by 1000 miles (Yes, a shameless 'Proclaimers' or Vanessa Carlton reference)
Response from ladyofthemasque (Author of In Annulo)
Lol, at least it's shorter than For Someone Special, omg that one was waaaay too long... XD~Lotm
wow your story is addicting.Since I began to read it nearly a week ago I couldn´t stop reading. The development your characters go through is well thought through. If I hadn´t known Hermione would end up with Severus I would have never guessed that Russel was Severus. But every reaction of the characters was absolutly believable. I absolutly loved the switching of between his different personae. Hermiones knack for Charms was just wonderfully shown. I nearly choked on her comment that potions was just like cooking just more dangerous. What i also loved was the way all of the trio was maturing slowly and how you described it.At first I was a little taken aback how you saved Dumbledore, but later it made a lot more sense and I was apeaced that he died after clearing severus and a goodbye to all.In short I really love your writingstyle and storyplot and characterdevelopment and ... and ... and ... just everything about the story!!!!

LOL... I was dying of laughter when they all appeared at the Headquarters... I'm surprised Minerva did'nt explode and yell at Remus and Tonks... lol. Great chapter! *HUGS*
This has been, and I do not write this lightly, the best story that I have ever read in the H/S genre. Most of the time, happily ever afters require a severe compromise of Snape's character- you never did this once. Leaving him to snark, be manipulative and react much like a lonely abused man could be expected to in such a difficult situation. Additionally, you did and admirable job making Hermione act like a girl who was mature for her age would- not 18 going on 30. I particularly liked how you handled the noncon sex between the two of them- I was quite prepared to villify you as many authors seek to use this as a plot device, but you integrated well within your story and your treatment of this subject was sensitive to the topic and the characters involved. Additionally, you did an admirable job with Harry and Ron, who often get the short shrift. Excellent job. Really. This was much more satisfying than the actual book seven, and a bit more plausible. I look forward to reading more of your high quality stories.
Response from ladyofthemasque (Author of In Annulo)
Erm...actually..I sort of Harry-bashed toward the end...bad me. But thank you for the compliments! Ron in particular, I wanted to make up for all the short-shrift he'd been getting in a lot of the SS/HG fanfics at the time. (I'm not gushingly fond of Ron as a character, but I do think Rowling really dropped the ball on his potential in the official storyline.)I still haven't read the seventh HP book...and given all I've heard of it, I think I shall cling to In Annulo as my Happily Ever After version. (Mainly because Snape lives, Hermione marries someone ruddy brilliant instead of someone ruddy-haired, and there's lots of happy shagging for my two favorite characters.)~Lotmcurrently eyebrow-deep in original plot-bunnies
I LOVE this story !
WooW!! I don't know what to say! This is one heck of a rollercoaster of a fic, and one you should be INCREDIBLY proud of. You do the SS/HG pairing credit and in such a unique and action packed way.I've cried, I've laughed, I've winced and I've smiled that little smile I have when there's something soppy to read.A masterpiece, a wonderful fic that's had me hanging on every word!I can't wait to lay a finger on your books.

This story was incredible, and you deserve the highest praise and recognition for it. I had to put my life on hold for a full day and a half to finish it, but it was definitely worth it. Perhaps, one day, you'll publish a completely original story...? If it was anywhere near as incredible as this, it'd be a smashing success. Thank you very much for a thoroughly enjoyable read.-

Now I feel like an idiot, because I just read your bio and saw that you've already written multiple books. Silly me. Good for you. Thanks again for a great read!
Response from ladyofthemasque (Author of In Annulo)
No worries. Most people don't read the bios, so they don't really know. In fact, I sat next to Beaweasley2 (she writes some good SSHG, herself) at Portus just this last July, having dinner with her and several others, and at one point in the conversation, I tossed out some comment about my books. She only knew me as Ladyofthemasque; she didn't know I was published. So I bent over, opened up my shoulderbag, and pulled out a couple copies of my books. Her eyes got REALLY bit, and she squee-gasped, "You're Jean Johnson?! OMG, I love your books--WAIT, Ladyofthemasque--you're Jean Johnson??"*insert massive amounts of snorting-sized laughter here*Apparently she loved my fanfics as Lotm...and loved my books as Johnson...but didn't know they were one and the same person! She was all embarrassed about it, but I told her she shouldn't be; in fact, I was doubly flattered, because she didn't read my original stuff "just because Lotm wrote it"; she encountered my original stuff at the gift shop of the hospital where she works, read it independently of any pre-conceived ideas about my writing, and still loved it. Color me pink with pleasure! So no worries; I'll take it as a high compliment, m'dear.*cuddlehug*~Lotm

Stop with the "british" teeth sterotype, its not true, and its bloody offensive. otherwise, fantastic story!!!
Response from ladyofthemasque (Author of In Annulo)
Considering I'm predominantly British in ancestry, and how I had to go through 3.5 years of braces and jaw surgery to correct my own teeth... Well, we all have things we write into fanfics, and things that make us twitch whenever we see them. The one that ticks me off is Hermione having "tiny hands". I could go off like a cannon in a huge bender over that one--or in canon, since her size is never described as being tiny, when JKR was very clear about marking who was shorter and who was taller, and ignoring those of average size when describing them--but I merely grit my straightened teeth and avoid putting them into my own story...which means I'm not necessarily watching out for other things.Considering the population of Great Britain is 60-65 million, I'm quite sure there are "many" Englishmen who have crooked teeth. (6 thousand is still considered to be "many", after all.)~Lotm

Wow, just... wow. Deathly Hallows can go take a flying leap into the wastepaper basket, I choose to believe in In Annulo instead.I held off reviewing until I'd read the entire fic, and now I'm left trying to organise my thoughts into a review that doesn't end up an essay.I'm in awe of your writing, and the detail you cram into your plot - and you plot ahead with post-it notes? You must have the smallest writing imaginable to squeeze it all on.Bizarrely, in the face of the praise you have received for every other aspect of your story I want to congratulate you on your writing of a supporting character. You've manged to make Ron a character not a caracature. Yeah, he's an arse for a while, but he's an unceremoniously dumped arse who gets over it. And, as is fitting for an exceptional chess player, he's tactically brilliant, not the light relief moron he so often gets relegated to being in fanfiction. With the logical mind you gave him it was inevitable that he'd see through the deception, but the genius in your plot was how he dealt with the knowledge.Thank you.

You're most welcome--and thank you. At the point I started writing IA, I was sick and tired of all the Ron!Bashing I'd been reading...and writing...and worse, reading in canon. So I wrote Ron as he should have been, the intelligent strategizer he is. Lol, alas, I kind of ended up *cough* Harry!Bashing instead...bad, bad me.But it was more important to restore Ron back to his original potential where the secondary characters were concerned. I'm very glad you approved of my efforts. Thank you.The rest of it...well, JKR would never put in the smut, but I, too, feel like I'm happier with IA than what I've heard about DH. (Which I still haven't read--I'm going to the Portus convention in just a few weeks, and I still haven't read it, can you believe it?) No...In Annulo is my book 7. I like my happy-for-Snape ending too much to give it up for "canon".*hug*~Lotm
