The Dark Lord has fallen, but an even more terrible force has arisen to take over the Ministry of Magic – the Pink Lord. Ruling with an abundance of ruffles and terrifyingly sharp stiletto heels, Umbridge’s Think Pink Brigade terrorizes a populace grown weary of decrees designed to enforce sweetness. Unexpectedly, Hermione Granger joins the resistance, the sarcastically snarky Back in Black. Award winner.

I am a longtime fanfic fanatic, having entered the realm via Buffydom. One day I read a Willow/Severus crossover and I was hooked – on Snape that is! He's been in every HP story I've done so far.
I write in multiple fandoms on LJ, esp. BtVS and Firefly. If you're interested in reading my fic for other/crossover fandoms, it can be found at:

Reviews for Back in Black
Great chapter, can we have some Back in Black action again soon, there's been a bit too much pink, we need relief, and we need Severus!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm very glad that you liked the chapter! The Pink is overwhelming, which is part of the dystopia.
Urgh, how horrible, can you imagine that ghastly woman popping into your home whenever she wanted?! Poor Hermione, she can't even realx at home, she is I feel on the brink of madness! Another great chapter, it's such a great story, I'm loving it!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm so glad that you liked the chapter and that the Watch Witch idea brought home how horrible this world is!
brilliant, as usual. Just what I need before going off to a morning of classes.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm so glad that you liked the chapter that much!
hmm.. there's no mention of Ron and Harry... I think.. did they die?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! Yes - back in chapter 1 I put up the original Potter Place prompt, which specified that HG is the only one of the trio alive. Then in chapter 4 there's this:"Friends wave at me from overly decorated picture frames on a doily-draped mantel. At least the seashells from Brighton aren’t too bad for Harry and Ron – they deserve some small measure of dignity after dying to save us all from Voldemort."
Response from rachaelmona (Reviewer)
o.. thanks.. sorry about doubting you for a moment there..
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
No worries!
How much more terrifying this can get? You picture each layer of this mostrosity of society with such utter terror of pink. I've hated pink all my life, but now I might start to openly revolt every time anything pink comes to my vicinity - vicinity meaning within-sight.Give me some black Snape, laces and embriodery deserve him.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter and are finding the dystopic elements I'm putting in to be effective!
We need the "good guys" plan to show up pretty soon. All this "pink" stuff is making me ill!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and are finding the story quite dystopic! Imagine living there every day!
That explains what she needed that forbidden ingredient for. I daresay Umbridge has thought of a way to bar a Muggle vasectomy too.Banning books?! I'm not really surprised, but if anything will incite Hermione to rebellion, that's it. Oh, and injustice to the underdogs, but Hermione seems to be one of them herself... along with the rest of the miserable pink populace of wizarding Britain.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and the idea of book banning (along with its effects on HG)!
In France we say "barbie pink" or "petit cochon rose = little pink pig" or "rose anglais" (sorry) or "rose bonbon mal sucé" ... or " envoyer quelqu'un sur les roses".= to send somebody packingBack in black !

Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! Thanks for letting me know that pink is used in insults in France - that's hilarious and I had no idea!
Gonna be a classic, girl!
Ehm. Er. I suspect Hermione needs a little comfort...maybe a few hours in the arms of the Man in Black.
:flees:
P.S. Pink is my favorite color and even I am becoming oppressed!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and think so much of the story! You're right that she may need sex comfort, but she won't need rescuing! (grins)
I love the Hufflepuff character. Nice chapter, even without Severus.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and Marion! SS soon!
Every time I come to the pp and see three little words, "Back in Black" on the top of the recent fanfiction list, my toes curl up and I clear the vicinty to keep from breaking things as I jerk about in hysterical laughter. Thank you, little else brings me as much enjoyment as a great fanfic--and yours is absolutely wonderful. Poor Marion--that's really rough. I'm glad you included her and those few details of her life. It makes everything seem more real. I know I am becoming redundant, but great job!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter and continue to find the story funny! Thanks as well for the notes on Marion - I also though it was important to show her story.
We need some centaurs, Stat! Or are they wearing pink?
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! I'll touch on non-humans eventually, but what do you think Umbridge would do to centaurs if she had a lot of power?
Response from blue artemis (Reviewer)
I'm sure she would have them killed, or banned.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Yeah - I think they created the word vindictive for her!
Good Lord! This is getting to Orwellian proportions... HELP! Someone has to do something and soon! Sc*ew the perfect smile and hello snarky smirk. *evil grin*
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter! Yes - smirks all around!

you're evil.
beyond that....
you're evil.
and if there's anything I've learned from reading your work....
You're Evil.
That said, you know I love your stuff. You're channeling George Orwell and Ayn Rand and Edith Wharton at the same time.... (must be tiring!).
Which of course makes you my favorite author in the universe right about now.
Jo would turn over in.... her bed???... if she could see this.
hemhem
Great job!
Naomi
Author's Response: Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter! I'm really channeling Orwell and Philip K. Dick and some movies, but I'll take other literary allusions, too!
I hope that's evil in the very best of senses! (evil grin)
Absolutely awful, appalling!!!---The situation, NOT your chapter. Your story is funny, but it is so terribly gut-wrenching to know this is how things have happened before in human history--the Jews in the Holocaust.
Down with Pink Lord!!!! Go Hermione!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter and that it has historical resonance for you!
Hermione plotting.....hmmm wouldn't Severus have some stuff to make that certain potion with???
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter! (evil laugh) - clever you!
I love the Big Sister overtones. I can't help but wonder what happened to all those nasty half-breeds like Hagrid, not to mention the centaurs. Keep up the good work.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter and the dystopic elements! The non-human issue will be touched on eventually - but what do you think Umbridge would do to them?
Like the chapter before it, this one is touching on some pretty serious territory, albeit in a very amusing way. I'm really impressed by how uneasy the atmosphere is, even though the story is genuinely funny.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter and the more serious issues I'm addressing!
I'm loving this story. Thanks so much for writing it, and for updating so frequently!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you enjoyed the chapter! [TPP waived the update rules for the challenge - thanks go to the admins as well!]
Ah, so that's why she was in search of contraceptive ingredients. Very devious conversation. I love how it really is a job Hermione might have loved if it weren't forced on her, and how she keeps her Proper Smile in place during the bizarre Two Minute Handshake.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! Yes, it's not that I forget things - it's that I don't believe in front loading exposition when you can show things through action instead (even if it delays the immediate answer).
Response from firefly124 (Reviewer)
In this case I think it was particularly good not to know that up front, because there's been this question in the back of my mind whether she's seeing someone seriously already, which made for an interesting kind of tension. Now there's this sense of relief that she's available alongside the rest of what you've revealed.
It's ... to much! I can even find words to tell you how traumatic the new pink lady regime is getting, and not only for your characters but she's making me hate the color more so then before. Nice chapter. Please more and make it black!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and that the dystopic elements are adding up to something horrible!
Have I ever mentioned that I absolutely love this fic. or that I can't wait to see what happens to that Toad? I feel for poor Hermione and Sev though...pink is such a nasty colour!
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you're loving the story! Yes, Pink and what it represents - both nasty!
Incidentally, I read "Fahrenheit 451" at the moment, and it's interesting to see that while your story includes many more comic elements, it's still as chilling as Bradbury's novel.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! I need to reread that - it's been about 20 years! But what a great book!
I like the Watch Witch -- her poster seems right out of 1984. Granted, a very frilly 1984... This is a pleasant diversion, indeed, and I commend you on your ability to take a humorous concept, and add undertones of gravity. I'm not sure if this exactly qualifies as satire, but it's certainly absorbing.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter! 1984 is a direct influence and the posters are like telescreens - well spotted.I see it as satire, but then I know exactly what elements of US culture I'm attempting to spork with this.
Those private conspiracies are typical of oppressive regimes. I'm amazed at the parallel you've drawn between them and this story.
Response from ubiquirk (Author of Back in Black)
Thanks! I'm really glad you liked the chapter and my attempts to cram in almost every dystopic element I can think of!
