Reviews for A Man's Best Friend
Of course it had to happen. History couldn't be changed that much. Poor things, all of them.
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
I can't change history.
You've gone and mucked everything up now, haven't you? Nice link with the canon lines meaning something totally different.
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
Oh, poop!
Excellent. Poor Charmaine. To know what will happen must be terrifying!
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
Absolutely! Thanks for reviewing.
Hmmm... I am interested to see exactly how this all will play out. I'm not too worried about Charmaine. Surely she knows what she is doing with facing Voldemort, and the portkey and all. This was an emotional chapter for all involved. I do hope things work out!
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
I'm hoping it all works out as well, and glad you're still coming along for the ride.
This chapter is heartbreaking. I hope Charmaine will return to a place where there will be a someone who can take care of her. I thought Voldemort was surely going to kill her.I take it that Baby Harry survived and is now in the safe confines of Privet Drive. I guess it will be eleven years before Severus sees Charmaine again... when Hermione, Harry, and Ron are first years at Hogwarts. Will he recognize something familiar about her? Will he recall that Voldemort called her Miss Know-it-all?Thanks for this very good update. I'm looking forward to the next one!Beth

All will make itself clear, eventually.
that was well written and made me cry....can't wait for the next chapter!
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
I made you cry! Here, have a hanky... Oops! Sorry! Someone already has it in their bloodstained hand....
How hard it must be for her to watch knowing she has already changed what should have been, and setting them on the path of the unknown.Thank you for sharing~

Hard indeed.
Oh this is so painful. Beautiful and painful.

I hope you're liking it.
I love this story. IT's a bit of a mess they're in now. Poor Herm--uh, I mean Charmaine.
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
It is a mess and I'm not sure it's going to get any better.
I'm glad she stayed. She wouldn't have been able to go, I think. She'd have probably returned if she'd left. The picture was very poignant, and it truly brought a lot home for Charmaine. Have a lovely trip, and thanks for the surprise update!!!
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
She needed to stay, didn't she?
Yes, my dear, waiting is the hardest part. That translates to:get it moving! I'm kidding, this is well worth waiting for. And what am I complaining about, anyway? You have been great about continual updates.Still, there are lots of unanswered questions. When will Charmaine have to leave? Will all be revealed before that time? Will she and Severus get more alone time? Can they stick to the no more lies policy? Will Severus be required to bring her before Voldemort? Inquiring minds want to know! Keep up the great work on this. I'm very anxious to know what is up next.
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
So many questions, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to answer any of them.
I am so glad Remus insisted that Charmaine come up for tea and then gave her and Severus a chance to be alone even if only for a few minutes. It was long enough for them to speak honestly of their feelings for one another and to agree to no lies— not the whole truth, but no more lies.I felt so sorry for Charmaine as she watched the photograph of Remus and Severus ("Please save me") and cried her eyes out. I couldn't have left either without making sure they returned safely. How terrible the waiting will be because she knows from personal experience the kinds of torture the Dark Lord delights in visiting upon his enemies and his followers alike. What a wonderful surprise it was to find this chapter had posted today. Thank you, and have fun on your trip!Beth

The waiting for their return is the hardest part.
I really enjoyed this story, and it has been impeccably consistent and sensical, until this chapter... I am a bit lost with what happened in the ending, so if you don't mind too much I'm going to ask for some clarification/fill in the blanks, cos I lack appropriate imagination/patience to accept I just don't know what happened lol :)So the curse that 'killed' Remus didn't really kill him it only injured him to the brink of death, but he was saved by Douglas the unicorn... somehow... the only way to keep him alive was to put them both in something similar to a picture frame which kept him in some kind of stasis or like a healing incubator or something. Then when he got strong enough with the love of Sev & Hermione & the power of the blaze he could then leave the frame. but the unicorn is still in it, or is that really just a picture of Douglas not the real him...? and they arent able to tell anyone else that Remus is alive now because I guess that's a well kept secret of unicorns that they can cure lycanthropy/heal people or something? Sorry for all of the questions I'm just a nosy parker :P also, are you Australian? :)
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
Thanks for your questions. The short answer is, a) yes and b) no.The long answer is, I hadn't thought that one through in my head nearly as fully as you did, I'm a very simple being and hadn't even considered half of your suggestions. I'll have to go away and think about it.And, I'm a Scot living in New Zealand.

haha I'm a scientist: must.have.rational.explanation.for.fictional.events.or.world.will.end Just kidding I'm not quite that neurotic, I just love knowing the backstory :D Looking forward to the results of your in-head research :) Awesome! I could tell you must have been around Aussies a bit from you're portrayal of Jo :P
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
It's been a long time since I wrote this story, so I may just have to revisit it to sort out the unicorn stuff. Thanks for getting my brain-cogs turning.
Response from Duchess_Of_Arcadia (Reviewer)
Any time, it's good to get those cobwebs cleared away sometimes :)
Love the way Remus licks Sev's face, affectionate and deliberately annoying all at the same time. :)
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
Just how I like him.
Oui...tres mauvais ma cherie. The S-H-one-T's really hit the fan now hasn't it? So.....she's from her future and gone into their past...am I right?Hmmm...head's still hurting. Poor Remus, he's really too soft and mard to be a Death-Eater. They'll eat him alive unless it's the full moon of course. Coincidently, my daughter's young man (who's from London but het live and let live and my back-space/delete won't work so please excuse any errors) fancies himself as a bit of a thespian and was a guide for one of the EDinburgh Ghost Tours! better go efore it starts to read like The Guardian. best wishes, Love Alo xxxxx.

Very Grauniad-like.Thanks for reviewing.Flying out for Glesga today & then off to Embra.
So sad there at the end. the imagery of the photograph and Severus pleading for help. ^_^
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
All that anguish and all that waiting....I'm outta here now.
I still love Severus and Remus together. They are a hoot. Especially the poorly placed drool stain. I didn't expect Charmiane to show up, nor did I expect them to go to the Potters' wedding. And what is on that skip of paper? *bites nails*I think the best part was the end at the wedding. The entire exchange between Severus and Charmaine was great. And Lupin putting his two cents worth is was very cute. Please enjoy your time away, but come back soon to rescue me from my anxiety over what will happen next, Ok?
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
Poor Severus, he really gets the rough end of the stick from Remus. I'm glad you're liking their relationship. Thanks again for reviewing.
When Remus and Severus decide to tie one on, they do it up right. Knocking on the Edinburgh Castle’s gates asking to be let in is a hoot. I would love to have seen that! I was very surprised when Charmaine arrived to escort them to Lily's and James' wedding. When Severus realized that Remus had drooled in his sleep, leaving a very large, damp patch on the front of his trousers, I laughed out loud. How embarrassing! The second most important thing to happen in this chapter (for me) was when she took the unicorn Portkey from her pocket: "They were breathing hard and still smoothing their dress robes when Charmaine pulled a small plastic unicorn from her pocket. As she did so, a scrap of paper fell from her pocket and fluttered unnoticed to the floor." That reminded me of something in an earlier chapter. In Chapter 12 when Severus went to talk to Charmaine after he was first discharged from the hospital wing, he saw her reading something she held in her hand below the desk: "Severus cleared his throat. Startled, Mademoiselle Bien-Aimée looked up. Hurriedly, she pushed the scrap of paper she had been reading underneath her textbooks." Could the piece of paper that fell from her pocket in their flat in Edinburgh be the same piece of paper she hid from him under her textbooks? However, for me the single most important thing in this chapter was what Severus said to Charmaine about when he married. He used the words "we’ll have a private ceremony with our closest friends." And after she said that he might want to discuss this with the witch involved, he said he'd already told her. *sigh* I just couldn't believe he said that to her— but I was thrilled that he did! Then when he twined his fingers with hers and told her he loved her, I wanted to do back flips! Yay!!!!! Woo hoo!!!!!And next I had a real belly laugh when Remus said, “I love you guys too... Now, show some respect; this is a church wedding, not the back row of the cinema.” What a way to end this chapter! Well done, quaffs.I will be beside myself until you return in late October and can update the next chapter, but I hope you and all who accompany you on your trip will have a wonderful and hassle-free time. Enjoy yourselves to the max!Beth

I have to 'fess up (again!). The knocking on the castle gates - that was one of my exploits. We were looking for a friend, Major Glen, who may (or may not) have been garrisoned in the castle. Needless to say the castle guards didn't let us in!
Hermione must know that rejection will just send Severus straight to Voldemort. I understand her anger but I hope she fixes this before Hogsmead weekend. Some how I figure this is going to be one misunderstanding after another until Severus takes the mark. Why is Lupin interested in Death Eaters? Is it like being into Death Metal only wizards don't have Rock bands?
Response from quaffswinegaily (Author of A Man's Best Friend)
Death Eaters and Death Metal have a similar draw for teenage boys, I think.

What would have happened if Hermione had stayed in stead of Little Lily Bitchybutt? I'm expecting you will explain as you go along. Did the unicorn intend for Severus to bond with Hermione? I think he did. Hermione was stupid not to see past her nose. She knows the unicorns are intellegent and wouldn't do such a thing randomly. She obviously can't imagine Snape ever being in love with her in the future so she can't see what's in front of her face here. Dumbledore knows, I'll bet. If he doesn't, he isn't worth his salt as the powerful wizard he is purported to be. Why would Hermione's touch sooth the unicorn Blaze? I don't know the story here but even I could figure that out, with what little I know of unicorn lore. I would expect mademoiselle smarty pants to know more than I do. Get a freaking clue "Charmaine"! This can only turn out badly for Severus for now.

That slang name is a crack up! Hermione obviously doesn't realize all her physical contact with Severus is not appropriate for an pubescent man child. Interesting story you have here. I wonder if poor Severus is being set up or helped out.

The wee beige jobby? It comes courtesy of Billy Connolly, who still makes me laugh after all these years.

"...the highest NEWTS in the History of Hogwarts, so you kept tellig us" Hermione has come from the future to help Remus and Severus. In the future she and Severus are lovers. That's what I think. None of this is going to make things any easier for Severus I have a feeling. I also have a feeling things get worse before they get better here. I don't know if I have the fortitude to wade through the bad. Does this story have a good endig? I'm going to have to check before I go on. Real life sucks enough without my recreation becoming stressful too. Sorry. Bad girl. I often read the end of a fic before I wade through it. I'm one of those apparently unusual persons who wants to know what happens to the people in a movie before I see so that I can prepare myself for it. I don't like to be surprised like it seems like most other people do. It doesn't ruin the story for me at all. I enjoy it more when I know what to expcect. I knowing who won the medal doesn't ruin the event for me at all.

You are better off without the empty headed little nitwit. James Potter is a swine and so is Sirius. Curse them!

She does seem to be flirting with him. She's singled him out. She spends extra personal and private time with him. She touches him too much if she isn't trying to tempt him. If she thinks she's taken a motherly affection for him she needs to check herself. If she doesn't realize she's flirting, she's a silly headed woman. She shouldn't lead him on so. I'm worried he'll get his heart broken. I really wish I knew what she is thinking. Even Dumbledore was about to ask if Severus was sleeping with her, but said she would have told him. She isn't behaving normally for a professor. I like her but I'm not sure what she's about.

None of us like to see Severus heartbroken.
