Life does not always turn out the way we want it to. Ten years after the Battle of Hogwarts, Severus Snape, thought by everyone to be dead, is living out his days in solitude on the edge of the wizarding world. Ginny Potter, meanwhile, is juggling a high-profile career, three small children, a Kneazle and a workaholic husband. A family crisis within the Potter household unwittingly brings Snape out of hiding and his and Ginny's lives are changed forever, with both of them ultimately offered a second chance for happiness. This story is mostly canon compliant but discounts the epilogue in Deathly Hallows.

Reviews for A Second Chance For Happiness
Oh, how awful! My initial reaction is that Ginny is being unfair because he is being honest, his intentions were never ill, and he truly does have feelings for her. But I guess that as a reader, I am privy to his thoughts and feelings and know without a doubt that he is telling her the truth. She doesn't have that benefit, so I can see why she feels angry with him. I hope that each can see the other's perspective, and that he will give her the time she needs, and with that time, she will think about everything that happened and give him another chance. Snape/Ginny is unprecedented reading for me, so I'd don't have a good feeling how this will go. *bites nails*

Thank you for sticking by this story, and for taking a chance on an unusual pairing. I have to admit, it's actually a first for me too! I set myself a challenge for an unusual pairing but trying to be canon consistent, minus the epilogue. All I can say at this stage is, trust me :)
Ginny! Go back at once there! Poor, wretched Severus! Please put your delighted readers out of misery by updating soon. Thank you.

OK, that was odd - when I was writing the response the letters were massive! Thankfully they posted normal size! Thanks again for all yur encouragement and support - it means a lot.
Don't worry and take your time. You have done great so far, and this is another perfect chapter. I look forward to reading more when you have time to continue. Good luck with the new job!

That anagram name is quite brilliant! I had no idea!
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
Thank you, no-one has guessed it so far :)
Poor Harry. But he didn't even try to mend his marriage... that makes me understand Ginny, even though I wish she had waited a bit.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
We can't help who we fall for, I guess. And there's no good time to end a marriage. But it sucks he had to find out like that.
An Anagram! Very sneaky of Severus, or maybe a shout to be noticed by those who should be paying attention? Well now that Harry has confirmation he is in quite the pickle isn’t he? That promise with Minerva to leave SS alone is going to be tough to uphold.
Good luck with your move and new job. I shall be waiting sort of patiently for your return.

Thank you for your continued support, it means a lot.
And here I am at the dreaded moment: caught up. So that means you need to write and post your little heart out, missy. When Ginny says he can tell her anything, somehow, I think she would change her tune if anything became him telling her his true identity. But I haven't read any Ginny/Snape, and I don't have a clue how she would react. She seems like a reasonable gal, but what a shock that would be.I really want the two of them to work out in the end. But I don't want Harry hurt too badly. Maybe you could find someone for him, to ease the blow, so I won't feel bad rooting for Snape/Ginny.

Chapter 20 will be posted tomorrow, and 21 possibly shortly thereafter, but then there will be a hiatus I'm afraid as I am in the process of moving 200 miles away and starting a new job! So unfortunately, it will be several weeks before I will get the chance to post again. It's a difficult situation for everyone involved, and this was never supposed to be a hearts-and-flowers type of story, so there is a long way to go yet. Thank you for your continued support.
Response from HBAR (Reviewer)
Well, you have a valid reason to disappear for a bit, so I will make an effort to be patient :) Good luck with your move and new job!

Thank you :)
What a bizarre situation where Ginny is having an affair, but only her husband knows with whom. I can just envision the crazy moment where Harry confronts her about being with Snape, and she is shocked that he knows about her affair, but finds it amusing that he thinks it is with Snape of all people. Then she goes to Alfric and tells him about it which causes an uncomfortable conversation to follow. Whatever happens, I see fireworks in their future, and not necessarily the good kind.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
You got that right with the fireworks! BOOM! :)
Whatever I was thinking about saying in my review as I read through this chapter is completely gone now that I got to the end with the Quick-Quotes Quill. I was only a little surprised that it recorded what was going on in the press box, but was shocked that it outed the man as Snape. Can't fool those quills, I guess. Wonder what Harry is going to do?
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
The quill was one of my better ideas, I admit :)
I have never read a Snape/Ginny, and in fact, I think I was oblivious to the fact that such a thing even existed. So it may take some getting used to if, as I assume, that is where this is going. Still, I'm not adverse to it, it has just never crossed my mind as a possibility. I'll have to let you know what I think when we get in deeper. They did start off on the wrong foot, both of them. I was glad when they both recognized it, voiced it, and then agreed to move on. That is a good sign already.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
I started this story as a bit of a reaction to the sheer amount of SS/HG stories out there, and I wanted to try something different bu still keeping in with canon as much as possible. A very tricky task I've set myself! I'm glad you decided to take a chance on a new ship and that you're enjoying it.
What? No Harry? I wonder what, if anything, he is going to do with the information. As for Snape, he better make sure he boots her from his house each time before he falls asleep, or she won't be waking up to Alfric in the morning. What will he do if his polyjuice runs out entirely? I also fear that while I don't see Snape as the type to have his walls adorned with family photos, there are surely some things to clue her in as to his identity which are in his house. Guess I'll have to be patient.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
Patience is indeed a virtue and I thank you for it :)
Oh, man. So will he keep the secret of his identity forever? Will he ruminate and feel guilty and have to spill the beans? Will Harry be the one to reveal to his wife who she is having an affair with? I don't know if it will go well, regardless of the way it comes out. Can't wait to find out.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
Plenty more to come, so stay tuned :)
Boy that Ginny is a determined little thing. It seems to her that Harry is a bad father for not caring about the identity of his benefactor, but in reality, he is showing his gratitude by respecting the privacy of this man. I can understand why Ginny and Harry stay together for the children, but they have a long way to go until the kids are out of the house. It isn't going to be healthy to stay together if they are miserable. The kids will be able to tell, if not now, then soon. So sad.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
Staying together because of the children is always the wrong decision, that's for sure.
See, sometimes being obsessed with Lily does pay off :) I hope he is right, but it seems too easy. I am sad for the Potters and their damaged marriage. What an awful, but realistic time for things to fall apart.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
I am glad you can see realism in this.... I've tried to keep it as truthful as possible, as well as fairly canon. Not an easy task!
What an evil cliffhanger, but I will let it go since the next chapter lies in print before me. You're lucky :) Harry can't win no matter what he chooses to do. Why won't the potions work on poor Albus?!?! If only there were someone good at potions who could help! *waits, looking around* I said, If only there were someone good at potions who could help! Aw, forget it. I'll just move on.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
Haha, yes if only there was someone good at potions... hmm...
He couldn’t have been further from the truth.*bites nails, then moves on*
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
*watches you nervously*
Oh, dear! Ginny really did need to let Harry know how she was feeling, but she couldn't have picked a worse time and place for it, could she? It isn't going to help the situation with Al any to have them at odds. I do hope that they can pull it together for their son's sake. If he dies ... look out.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
The fiesty redhead couldn't hold back any longer.
This just shows how strained the relationship between Harry and Ginny really is. It is natural to want to have someone to blame when something goes wrong, but he should be the person she is turning to for comfort, not her place to lay blame. I do hope the little guy is alright!
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
Sometimes it takes a catalyst to let everything out, and Al's illness sadly was that catalyst.
Oh no! Now I am wishing it was Harry, LOL. I do hope Al will be a victim, not a casualty.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
I'm evil, aren't I?
If your aim was to make me all nervous about this flu business, you've done your job. I suspect Harry will be affected, but will it stop there in terms of her friends and family? I have a bad feeling ...
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
A bad feeling, eh? Let's see if your feeling is right...
Yes, Christmas, do hurry. These two need a definite break. I wish Ginny would just talk to Harry. He is a resonable enough guy (when he's not flying off the handle about something!) and should be able to understand her needs and concerns. She will regret it if something happens to him while he is working this mysterous case.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
It's sad seeing this relationship go into a slow dive and it's tough for them both.
Oh, dear, Severus. The longer you wait the worse it will be. But then of course he doesn't think that she could actually care for HIM. Waiting impatiently for the next chapter.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
Thank you for your support, I promise not to keep you waiting too long for the next one.
I must say I feel sorry for Harry. Although if he really loved her, he shouldn't be so unforgiving. It's always sad when a family breaks up. part of me thinks Ginny should have tried harder, while another part of me can sympathise.
Response from star_girl (Author of A Second Chance For Happiness)
It is indeed a sad, awful situation when a relationship ends. I thought it was important to show both sides and make this story an unconventional love story, showing that happiness can come at great personal cost.
