Hmm... I must say that what you have Hermione's mother saying doesn't work for me at all. Hermione's mother is a doctor, and in my experience, doctors tend to be very matter of factly and scientific about matters of the body such as sexuality.Also, apart from religious fanatics, virginity is no big deal in the middle of Europe. It's rather a matter of getting rid of it as quickly and neatly as possible. Mothers warn their children to only do it if they really want to, and to take precautions, use condoms and the pill.I can't see any mother who is not a religious fanatic or seriously deranged saying something like Hermione's mother did. Not in Europe and not at the time when Hermione was a teenager. I'm older than Hermione, and the idea of staying a virgin until marriage was only a historical trope for us - and an American oddity. ;-) So that twist of your story seems very implausible to me.

Well, first, Hermione's parents are dentists, and even though I'm sure that didn't stop them from having to study the human anatomy and look at things scientifically, the fact remains that a person can have all the knowledge in the thier HEAD, but when it comes to psychological hang-ups, all bets are off.What if Hermione's mum had been sexually abused as a girl and had a warped view of sex? What if the marriage between Hermione's mum and dad isn't all peaches and cream and Hermione, being their only child, is really put upon by her mum becasue of her own guilt, shame, etc.Hermione's mum could be a sexually cold woman for whatever reason and passed down her feelings of worthlessness about sex to her daughter.I guess the fact is, is that people do things for strange reasons. Even if they know in thier head what they might be doing may not be the right or smartest thing, the psychological pull of a past not dealt with or admitted will trump whatever cultural norms and conventions are.These were my thoughts when I wrote this chapter. Thanks for your review, I appreciate honest reactions to my work. I hope you'll keep reading even if you don't see this twist as being plausible. Echoes of my childhood! It was the usual thing to tell daughters when I was younger. Or worse - not tell them anything! Whatever uptight mothers could say to their daughters that would 'keep them safe' was drilled into them. This leads to having sexual hang-ups in the adult woman... and now Severus has added fear of the penis on top of it all. Fear equates to lack of trust. Men know not what they do! [And that's a big problem for girls, too!]

My mother was just like that! Sex is a necessary evil and you don't talk about it - EVER. I have two sisters who both had serious problems with their sexuality because of it. Lucky for me, I bought books and ignored my mother's woefully ignorant opinion :)

I had a lot of friends who were screwed up because of thier mother's hangups. It took me a while, but I found my own sexuality and I refuse to apologize to anyone about it. My husband and I are finally after seven years of marriage enjoying sex together, instead of me not being an active participant! That was a rather tactless way to admonish a virgin! I like the way you are drawing out their "explorations." There's a sweetness to it that is just delicious, and I really love the way you've written their dialogue!

How can a mother do that to her child, yes you have to talk with your daughter but not make her so scared she can not enjoy her husband. The lemons where great, I dont think Severus ment to upset her but caution her as to what a man may feel when being stimulated. You are remarkable in how you portray both of them , I always feel their emotions flow. Please update soon.

I got a lot of conflictig attitudes from my mom and dad about sex and it tooka long time for me to wrok a lot of that stuff out. I think it is more common than people realize. Parents say stupid things to scare their kids so they won't get pregnat or get someone pregnant, but they don't think of the long-term repurcussions. Rita's article had me laughing. Upon consideration, I am not surprized that they don't try to fight fire with fire, & discredit Rita by pointing out she is an unregistered animagus. She would reply that she knew because she had actually SEEN Severus and Hermione together. I agree with Darque Hart, I am glad that Severus gets 'credit' for having lost friends, even if some of those freinds turned to the dark. I had a childhood friend who became a drug dealer. She was irretrivably lost to me as someone I cold respect or approve of. But how does one stop loving? Eventually love faded, as it must under such circumstances, but the memory was always there.Anyway, this is a very good story. I am back from holiday and have some chapters to catch up on. This one is very touching and brought tears to my eyes, I am going through a period of mourning right now, but hope I never loose everyone dear to me, as Hermione and Severus have done in this story.Thank you for sharing this!

This story initially came out of my sorrow over suddenly losing my step-father (whom I was very close to and was a wonderful Dad to me and Grandpa to my daughter) at 54 due to a massive MI in March. He was one of those kinds of people you don't think of dying, they have too much life and energy in them. I hope you will find peace in your life. Mourning is so painful, but a part of life that is unavoidable.God Bless,Livvy

What a lovely chapter, I adore weddings and this one was so nice in it's simplicity. I doubt that either of them would have wanted a fuss, and with all the deaths it wouldn't have been appropriate.

OMG! Poor Severus... he was so tender with Hermione, so patient. But how long will he be expected to wait? Fantasy can take one just so far. Perhaps not too long? Hermione is a vital and curious young woman, surely she will want to pursue intimacy sooner rather than later. 
And then there will be all of the new teachers and staff arriving at Hogwarts. Lots of opportunity for misunderstandings. Hermione has never had to worry about something she might say in jest to a collegue being taken the wrong way by a serious boyfriend, let alone a powerful husband. She has her friendships with Harry and Ron to think back on, but she didn't have to worry about causing raging jealousies of a romantic nature. or becoming jealous herself when some of these older, more expeirnced witches come on to Severus. Really, the man IS sex on legs. This may be getting pretty interesting pretty soon.Oh yeah, about that cliffie... You are an evil witch to do that to all of us readers of Bookends. Severus has been pitching tents (I love that line, BTW) for quite a while now, and you need to cut the boy some slack! As my daddy used to say, "Everybody needs a little bit."
