The Intergalactic Quidditch Cup
The Intergalactic Quidditch Cup
Since space on our planet is limited, magical beings from other planets in our solar system must play against each other for the right to settle on Earth within the wizarding population. The game they play? Intergalactic Quidditch of course!
Come out and represent one of these planets. Get your brooms ready because…
Sign-ups are now open for Team Tryouts!
Simply reply to this post and answer the following questions:
1. What’s your penname?
2. Have you written before? Posted here?
3. Would you enjoy writing in a round robin, competing against other authors also writing in one and using the same prompts?
4. Can you commit to writing one 1-2 thousand-word chapter within a week’s time when it is your turn?
5. Are you a team player? Willing to cheer for your teammates?
6. What are your two favorite positions on a Quidditch team?
7. What are your two favorite planets in our solar system?
8. Can you solemnly swear that you won’t discuss your team’s story ideas with anyone else? (The other teams are dying to know what you’ve got planned so they can outscore you!)
More about the Challenge:
Teams will need players (authors) for seven positions.
Positions:
Gravity Keeper
Supernova Seeker
Asteroid Beater
Meteoroid Beater
Comet Chaser
Moon Chaser
Black Hole Chaser
~~~~~ ~~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~~
Each team (planet) will have a team captain (which will be a TPP Staff member), who may play one of the positions on the team.
Team Captains will:
--hold team meetings and practices (via an LJ Community)
--give out the order in which the players need to write (positions)
--help members decide which direction the story should take
--discuss the best possible beta for your chapter (remember you can’t have someone on another team beta for you)
--answer any questions you may have and give out the word prompts for each chapter
~~~~~ ~~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~~
There will be a referee who remains neutral and doesn’t play on any team.
Referee’s duty:
--decides which word prompts will be used for each chapter and informs the team captains
--predetermines which phrases or cliché wording/situation in any given chapter is a penalty (loss of five points)
--predetermines which phrases or cliché wording/situation in any given chapter is a bonus (gain of five points)
--receives a copy of each chapter in case uploading assistance is needed
~~~~~ ~~~~~~ ~~~~~ ~~~~~~
Points will be tallied after each chapter is written.
How can you get points?
--using the prompt words (a minimum of three of the seven given) correctly in the story will be the equivalent of tossing a Quaffle through a hoop (ten points each)
--turning your story in on time will gain you twenty points
--each team will receive five points per review
--teams will win bonus points after each chapter by having readers vote on the best chapters (point distribution will depend on the number of teams; example: if there are four, first would have 40 points, second would have thirty, third would have twenty, and last would have ten)
--using the ref’s predetermined phrases or cliché wording/situation (five points)
How can you lose points?
--turning your story in late will cost you twenty points
--going over the word limit (over 2000 words) will cost you five points per hundred words
--going under the word limit (under 1000 words) will cost you five points per hundred words
--using the ref’s predetermined phrases or cliché wording/situation (five points)
--using one of the prompt words incorrectly would be a loss of ten points each time you use it incorrectly
--not using the required amount of prompt words (at least three) will cost the team ten points for each requirement not met (maximum of thirty points)
--having to use a substitute player for any given chapter will cost the team twenty points (plus any other penalties that might have occurred—being late, etc.)
Other Stuff:
Your team’s name will simply be the planet you represent.
The respective positions from the teams would go head to head each chapter—both answering the same prompt.
Each chapter will be due on a Sunday. Email the chapter to your team captain and the referee for uploading please. The TPP staff will then give it priority in queue and have it posted the same day.
The next chapter is due in exactly one week.
Please check your chapter’s word count at www.spellcheck.net for accuracy. It’s what we will be using to check it (not everyone has the same writing programs).
No reviewing your own chapter please.
If a team has to get a substitute player (pinch hitter), that person has to turn it in on the same due date. No extensions.
Once the season is over, the two teams with the most points will play for the Intergalactic Quidditch Cup and the right to inhabit Earth!
--playoffs will have each team choosing three players to compete (one chapter each)
--all normal rules will apply
--winners take all!
GUI or WYSIWYG
Major Modification!!
GUI or WYSIWYG has been added to the following fields: reviews, responses to reviews, comments and story text areas. If you are unaware of what that is, you can play around with it either by leaving a comment to this news item or by leaving a review for a story.
Authors: No need to panic. I am making the transition as painless as possible, and it really isn't too confusing once you take a look at it and read my notes next to the textbox you paste your story into.
I hope you all have fun with this. I worked very hard to get this to work, especially with extra consideration to authors uploading stories, and I actually have butterflies in my stomach.
TWO NEW SKINS!!
Thanks to TarahFae (artiste extraordinaire, hostess of the Snape Icon Archive, and brilliant authoress of Melangell), I have a beautiful new skin. Members and non-members alike can use this skin, called Patronus, by choosing it as your permanent skin in your Edit Personal Information area or by changing the skin on the index page. I hope you like it. Be sure to tell Tarah how wonderful the graphics are. Tarah, you are the best!
I also created a skin that is light on graphics, which will be perfect for those of you on dialup, who have slower connections, or use mobile devices to view websites. Page load times will be faster if you use the GraphicLite skin.
Queue slower than usual
Apologies to authors who have chapters in our queue. We are currently understaffed, so it can take a day or two longer than usual. We are working hard to stay on top of everything.
Major Addition
First of all, I want to apologize for neglecting the stories in queue the last two days. All I have to say in my defense is that when I get something in my mind, I cannot let it go. I am a millimeter away from having the "Remember Me" feature ready. It has some minor bugs having to do with the cookies and I am trying to iron them out before I upload it to the archive. However--and this I hope will make up for neglecting my admin duties--I urge you all to login and take a look at the change(s) on your User Account page.
One of the changes you will only be able to see if you have a story waiting to be validated. This function, entitled Story Validation Status, will let you know where exactly your story is in the queue. The second change I have been wanting to implement for a long time. This one everyone can see, but you will only be able to take advantage if you have left a review. Take a look at View Reviews You've Given and you will be able to see all reviews you have left, in order by date (descending), complete with title, chapter, author, date, and the number of stars. Here, you can also add a little bit more to the same review or respond to an author's response. I truly hope you find this fun, if not useful.
Updates and More
If you are interested in the latest changes I have made, please visit the forum board, especially My Latest Post. Comments are always welcome.
In case you were unaware, there is an area on the forum board where you can post if you are either looking for a beta or wish to help an author by betaing. Please take a look. I know there is one author currently looking. Thank you!
