Late one night, someone calls to Hermione from an empty, black canvas. What she learns changes the situation quite a bit. A darker and sexier spin of the events in DH.

26 years old, avid HP fan, live in a pretty rainy country. My favourite writer is George Orwell, which should be taken as a warning by anyone looking for pink fluff. I do not like pink fluff.
I used to be a hard core SS/HG shipper. Then came Dracontia and completely blew my mind with her HP/DM stories. And once I started reading slash, there was just no going back. I still enjoy a well-written SS/HG (or any pairing, really), but the current passion is pretty boy-on-boy action. :-) Any pairing, more or less, I'm not that picky (except for SS/HP, that really creeps me out for some reason.)
I'm also an avid Bandom fan (P!atD). Those fics can be found on my LJ if you want to explore the waters outside the HP realm one day.
2008-12-08: Today, I abandoned hope of finishing my SS/HG WIPs "Shades of Grey" and "Les innocents." I'm very sad about letting go, but I feel it was the right thing to do. (More details in the A/Ns of each story if you're interested).

I always thought jkrs version of events was kinda silly and unrealistic, i mean what was the point of it all, at least this one is better, dreary and desolate as wartime and teenagers in it should be. Poor all of them though! I guess Harry will die in the end, i dont hate Harry or anything but the end of dh was just so anticlimatic.....

My honest opinion of DH is that it reads like someone writing their first fanfic without the help of a beta. It's just sad for the most part how badly written and constructed it is, on every single level. I'm doing my best to pretend it doesn't exist at all. :)
hmm this WAS the point in dh at which Ron came back. I actually like Ron (not as a partner for Hermione though) so I hope he wont desert them....
Response from RedOrchid (Author of Conversations Through an Empty Frame)
I do too. Ron is my favourite in this story. :)
A very nice fic so far well-written and in character. I love fics that more-or-less follow cannon or are at least not completely au and display people in-character, not suddenly a totally nice Snape or a sex god snape or mary sue hermione or a total bastard Ron... I really like this so far. Ss/hjg is my favourite and longtime hp ship.

Very nice. I liked Bill's words of wisdom, and that Ron heeded them. Great chapter.

Great story, and I must say, that's a really nice ending to it. I felt warm-hearted by the lovestory, I liked that Severus and Hermione got together, and I particularly liked that you wrote Harry speaking " at the close" to his mom, Remus and Sirius, but not to James, because after book 5 I can't help thinking what a git he was. Have a great summer, and may the Muse shower you with plenty of plot bunnies!
Response from RedOrchid (Author of Conversations Through an Empty Frame)
Thank you very much! I'm glad you liked it.James never made into the story for me. In canon, he does come across as a big git, and not a very smart one either, while Sirius and Remus are both somewhat developed characters (plus they served a point in the Harr/Ron plot :-)) I sometimes wonder how JKR reads her own story, seeing as she continues to push for the "saint Lily and her valiant James" in interviews while the way they are actually written in canon gives you a pretty nasty picture of two not so nice individuals who really deserved each other. (Lily's treatment of Snape is pretty dreadful really) On the other hand, she does the same with Ginny and even Hermione, despite the glaringly vicious traits that come across in the pages (especially Ginny, though Hermione looked more and more like Dolores Umbridge the more I read of book 5)But... I babble. Thanks for reading and reviewing!

A lovely epilogue to a wonderful story - thanks! And I do like Phineas Nigellus, so I was very happy to see him once more.

Very nice! I especially liked the touch of having Headmaster Black actually expess his approval of her/for her actions. *Is thoughtful* Seems like she would be more deeply touched at having his approval than she would of Dumbledore offering (false) gratitude for what she went through (do to his machinations) to help their side win the war. Phineas Nigellus, at least, always seemed honest and up front with his opinions of her; whether he was calling her a mudblood, just being dismissive of her (because she was little more than a child), or relaying messages for her or Snape. Also glad that Severus brought her back to his/their quaters rather than dropping her off in the Hospital Wing to have Poppy care for her and (since the boys are obviously off 'celebrating' on their own) have her wake up for the first time after the battle alone. My guess is that all the books and parchments surrounding Severus means he also healed her himself, and, if she's feeling worse than after the Department of Mysteries debacle, that whatever was done to her took a lot of work and power to cure...Enjoyed very much! Looking forward to seeing what you come up with next!

LOL Phineas wanting to be in a nice Knockturn Alley establishment because it would be more sedate than what he had been witnessing!

excellent! now why couldn't jkr write an ending so tidy and satisfying! thanks so much
Response from RedOrchid (Author of Conversations Through an Empty Frame)
Thank you! I honestly don't know. Sometimes I wonder if she wrote it on purpose just to piss people off and keep them from nagging her to write sequels. (I mean, after that epilogue, would you really want to read it?)

Three cheers for the author! Hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray, hip hip hooray!!!!!!!!!I loved DH, but there were so many holes you could drive a fleet of double deckers through it in places. It's always lovely to read other writers' attempts to fix it, especially when it works. Excellent fic. Nice one! :D

This was a fabulous story. It was so different from other versions, even if there was a similar general theme. There was also an overall feeling of murkiness, or greyness. Not quite dark, but not clean either. Very well done!
Response from RedOrchid (Author of Conversations Through an Empty Frame)
Thank you so much! I love playing the greyscale. This was so much fun to write. I'm really glad you enjoyed it.

This is a wonderful story - a much better version than the original. I especially liked Phineus Nigellus as go-between (I've always liked him a lot), the Ron/Harry romance, and, of course Severus and Hermione. Thanks for letting Fred live, too. Of all the deaths in DH, his seemed to be the most pointless. I'm looking forward to reading more of your stories.

Thank you so much. That makes me really happy to hear. And you've managed to pinpoint pretty much all of my favourite moments when writing this story. I do adore Phineas, he's loads of fun to write. Thanks for reviewing! Hope you'll like my other stuff.

Oh Red I am sorry to have this story come to an end. I must say one of the parts I enjoyed the most was the HP/RW relationship. Why do we divide ourselves so much in fandom? I can certainly handle slash as long as my favorite couple get together in the end. Perhaps not everyone feels as I do…Go figure. I’ll have to go look up whatever else you have written, after all good writing is good writing no matter who is naked.
There will be a SS/HG exchange coming up soon. I do hope you will be participating.
Response from RedOrchid (Author of Conversations Through an Empty Frame)
"Good writing is good writing, no matter who is naked"LOL! That's fabulous. I'm making that my official motto, definitely. :-)I was sad to leave this story also. It was very different to write because of the Harry/Ron, but I loved writing it all the way. It's nice to have a lovestory that portrays that deep, connected kind of love and not only the oh-i'm-so-attracted-to-you-let's-shag-on-a-desk variety. :-DSS/HG exchange you say? Didn't know about that. Tell me more.

Are you on live journal by any chance? LJ is where the HG/SS gift exchange lives. Here is the link: http://community.livejournal.com/sshg_exchange/What you do is think up 3 prompts that you would like another author to write you a story or art prompts. Then you sign up for the exchange. The mods at the exchange will match you up with another writer and then BINGO we have an exchange. Your exchange reciepant is a secret and there is no telling till after its all done. The last exchange which posted in Jan 2008 was really big. Something like over 100 stories. They are all there on the LJ if you scroll back. Its a treasure trove of excellent fic. Check it out. Get your butt on LJ. Come join the fun

"acting as life-size Patroni " Cool! Your spin on the battle/death/resurection made a hellva lot more sense than JKR's ! I do beleive I understood what you were saying. I am glad Ron got the chance to kill the mortal Riddle. Well done Ronnikins!Meanwhile Hermmione is alive but in rough shape I would expect. Please dont kill her off!

Didn't expect Ron to be the one to kill Voldemort, but it fit nicely in this story!A great spin on the canon events. Looking forward to the epilogue!

At least Ron won't feel like he's living in Harry's shadow anymore since technically he was the one to kill Voldemort. Harry just... finished making him mortal, and he wasn't even solely responsible for destroying the Horcruxes. Glad Harry didn't "air" Severus' "dirty laundry" in this one. Snape is such a private man, I thought that was high disrespectful (to say the least) of Harry to do so in DH. If there was even the slightest chance of him living, he wouldn't want his business to become public knowledge...Also happy you kept Fred alive!Looking forward to the next chapter! Assuming that we'll get Hermione and Severus' side of the story, and I can't wait to read it!
Response from RedOrchid (Author of Conversations Through an Empty Frame)
Thank you for the long and wonderful review! I hated how Snape was treated overall in DH--no respect whatsoever. I was very happy to change that in this story. And I couldn't kill Fred. I love the twins. Also, I didn't see any reason to do it, plot-wise, so... :-)Technically, the story ends here, and next chapter is a pretty short epilogue, but yes, it's from Hermione's POV. :-)Thank you so much, yet again. Glad you liked it.

I have become quite addicted to your story and I loved every little bit of this chapter. I must say that I like your explanation of the Elder Wand better than Mrs Rowling's and Ron killing Voldemort is great! I guess we are in for a "peace, joy and honey cake" ending (as the German proverb says)?
Response from RedOrchid (Author of Conversations Through an Empty Frame)
Peace, joy and honey cake? :-) Love that phrase. We should definitely adopt it into English. I tried to get some of that into the end of the chapter--I don't believe that the WW will just magically transform into the sickly sweet version of the canon epilogue over night. Peace and joy will probably take a long time to achieve. But for Harry and Ron--oh, most definitely :-DThanks for reviewing!
