Reviews for Soul Man
Wow that's a great plotline! Why did Snape made his will the way he did? Why does he come to her at an age where he must have been extremely unhappy and unbalanced? What was the so disgusting ingredient, though? I was expecting virgin's blood or other human body fluids... Edward-out-of-his-body will even have learned about her interaction with Draco, correct? So she's a slut because she tried to seduce him while having regular sex with Snape and looking for others as well. Well, if he was the caring, monogame type, taking it slowly, it would be an almost just accusation. But he isn't! He's not any better himself. Now please hurry to the next chapter before he can wreak havoc at Spinner's End, will you? -----As an aside: I'm not happy with the masses of alcohol in your story :-/
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Not telling about the disgusting ingredient! It shall remain a secret for now. ;-) And yes, Edward's insults are supposed to be unjust. Calling a woman a slut is just not on. Thanks for the awesome review!Oh, and about the alcohol - trust me, considering how much the British drink on average, the amounts in my story are not 'masses.' They are the merest tipples...
I found this story through the wonderful "random" button and am already intrigued. Great writing!!Very good that you describe the house that well, now we know what's where. Or was, since everything is empty, which is odd. I walked through each of the doors with excitement--even if there is nothing that immediately seems off. This is proof of your great writing style. I agree somewhat with your reviewer on Hermione's parents staying in AUS... she wasn't exactly close to them during the last 7 years. She even avoided them during some of the hols. No wonder they see little benefit in living closer to her again. But this is not what your story is about. Now I'm curious what the house's secrets are...
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Thanks for the lovely review! Sorry it has taken me so long to respond - I haven't been doing much in the fanfic world lately. I'm glad you enjoyed the description of the house, as it was one of my favourite parts to write. I'm also pleased that Hermione's parents' remaining in Australia comes across as convincing. I wasn't sure how that would be received. I hope you've liked the rest of the story! ;-)
This story keeps getting better and better! I'm always checking for updates, and thank you for keeping them coming. The yearning between Snape and Hermione is palpable, and I have to keep reading to find out if they get to be together (they do, right? Right??)Also, I don't trust Teach. There's something going on with him. But I also feel bad for him at this point, being second choice and all...body misused while he was tripping... you've created a great mysterious tone to all this and I beg you to keep going!

I'm so glad to hear you like the story! Thank you so much for the lovely review. :-DAs to what happens as the story progresses... I make no promises. ;)

My god, what a powerful ride all the way through. Your descriptions of the drug-induced symptoms is magnificent, especially Teach's aquatic metaphor. The mad ten minutes with Snape, and the ending... My god, woman, best chapter yet!
I am DYING for more. I know, authors hate that, but I am.
Author's Response: Wow, thank you! *massive grin* I'm so pleased.
And yeah - I don't understand why other authors hate requests for more. I mean, it's not as if I feel particularly pressured by them, and I love the fact that people need their next fix. So keep on - it doesn't bother me one bit. :-D
lulabelle72's response: Then I shall. Hear me pounding the desk? Yeah, that's me, demanding more, and soon.
So, get a look at that Bill and Snape in the rain?
Edward is truly a bastard, much more than Snape could ever be. However, I'm not quite sure that even he deserves to have his soul shoved aside, even for Severus' sake. And just what was Severus proposing in demanding that she destroy the potion? There's just this one body available, at the moment, and it seems that the bastard in it really does have the right to keep it. Dammit.A very sticky little dilemma you've created here, m'dear! I look forward to seeing how you propose to have them work their way out of it!
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Yes, how unfortunate that even bastards get to keep their mighty-fit bodies. There is no justice in the world. :)Thank you so much for the review - I promise to satisfy your curiosity soon. ;-)

OMG! Frankenstein, meet your monster...

Frankenstein: 'Hello, monster!'Monster: 'You could bring my body back to life, but you couldn't take away my existential angst?! Damn you, Frankenstein!'etc etc:-D

An absolutely brilliant thesis on how Horcruxes work! Perfectly consistent with what we saw of Riddle's mutilated soul in canon!

Thank you so much! *giant squee* This is going on my list of favouritest reviews ever. :-D

Quite frankly, I do NOT think that Edward's comment that Hermione was a slut was justified in the least. And I don't think she deserved it. Please tell me the arrogant berk is going to get what's coming to him?And how does he know about Hermione and Severus "after hours"? (When he wasn't there, I mean)
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Insults are never justified, that is true, but sometimes the logic behind them is. Although not in this case. :) I really hate the term 'slut' myself, which is why I included it as an insult in this fic. The idea that women should be ashamed of enjoying physical pleasure is outdated, patriarchal, and indicative of the prevailing belief that women are not full human beings with personal agency. But enough feminist rant. Perhaps Edward will be made to pay for his rudeness. We shall see. :-)

Good lord, what a cliffie! And I'm seriously impressed by your detailed and scholarly depictions of obscure Divination practices.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
I do like my cliffies. :)Thanks for being impressed by the Divination stuff - I did loads of research myself and kept my beta in the dark about the details until the chapter was ready for her to edit. This one, and chapter eleven, are probably my favourites out of the whole fic, specifically because they're the fruits of a lot of planning! :-D

OK, so there goes my half-constructed theory about Teach. The admonition "you must not continue down this path" is very timely -- the entire story has been feeling a bit like a trip down a road that's going to end in some sort of tears. One more prosaic observation -- I love the way you draw the relationship between Hermione, Harry and Ron -- very close, and completely nonromantic, which always felt right with those three to begin with.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Did you think Teach was Snape? Or something to that effect? I really tried to steer away from that, 'cause I've read too many stories where the 'original character' is Snape in disguise and we all know it from the outset - especially stories in which he's 'dead.' Part of the reason I got started on this fic was because I wanted to see a story in which Snape actually WAS dead. Of course, in some fics, he's a portrait, and that's cool too (but limiting). Thanks for what you say about the Trio as well - I, too, always saw their relationship as close but platonic, and got a little grossed out starting in GoF when it became clear that R/Hr was, so to speak, JKR's ship. ;-) But I'll save my rants about JKR's characterisations for a more appropriate time and place! Many thanks for the review. :-D
Response from Elisabeth (Reviewer)
Well, yeah, I did think Teach might be Snape. What can I say, I have a terribly commonplace mind :) On the other hand, the story has had a ghost-story feel that's hard to deny (and even a bit of a vampire-story feel, too, with all that secret basement stuff). So no big shock!

I regret having to pepper you with catch-up reviews, but I'm so enjoying this story. This plot is tremendous fun to savor as it goes along; it's like a package slowly unwrapping. Plus, if you've got to have a ghost, it's not bad to have one as talented as Hermione's ghost evidently is.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
No regrets, please! I love reviews. :) Especially ones that compare my stuff to a slowly-unwrapped present. Delayed gratification is my favourite, so I like to know that other people feel the same way I do. :-D

Wow -- great way to finish up. It seems that whatever *it* is, it wants to come closer. And Mr. Teach continues to intrigue -- it was interesting to see him drop his Clueless Yank pose and start pushing Hermione in a direction that might be pretty risky. Which makes a person wonder whether Mr. Teach is really Mr. Teach, or somebody else entirely.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
He's really Mr Teach, but he's taking the gloves off now. And he's a lot smarter than he's admitting, which we'll see later on. But enough! I mustn't give too much away. :)

Oh, that was terrific -- ghostly and sexy and romantic all at once. In addition, the character of the little boy is shaping up very nicely; he's a very original and unpredictable little person.

The suspense builds. Two observations: First, Edward Teach seems *awfully* familiar with Really Famous People Who Have Security Obsessions. And that could be a tricky thing. Second, "The dead should be left in peace" is very good advice. Why do I get the feeling Hermione is about to disregard it?
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Oh yes, Teach has 'connections' - all rich people do, especially Americans. And, of course, he's turning Hermione into a connection by funding her work. Networking, you know. :-D

Ooh, Hermione meets Snape's little neighbor. I like this development. Overall, I really like the pace of the story, which is leisurely enough for a reader to soak in the atmosphere of the settings and the personalities, but with a plot that's unfolding very intriguingly.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
I'm relieved to hear that you like the pace - that was one thing I was slightly unsure about, but it seems to have worked out well. I was really unsatisfied with the pace and direction of my previous fic, so I wanted to make sure that I gave this one a lot more care and attention. So I'm very happy that it's paying off! :-D

And here comes Edward Teach. Love the Blackbeard reference, wonder how it will come into play later? I like this portrait of postwar Hermione, who seems to be using her books and research skills both to keep herself busy and push away more troublesome emotions.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Sweet, you came back for more! Yes, I always figured that Hermione would need some serious recovery time after the war - even the most motivated and ambitious of us can't leap right into a busy bureaucratic post! Hell, I needed about eight months of down-time after leaving university and I was only studying, not destroying Horcruxes and fighting a Dark Lord. At least, that I knew of... :-D

Nice beginning. Wouldn't have thought a house tour would be so compelling, but in a way, this was a cross between a home-improvement episode and the opening of a horror movie. And of course when someone tells Hermione Don't Go In The Basement Alone, she's going to do it. I just know she is.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
I figured that since the house would be such an important feature of the story, it was worth describing in detail. Thanks for coming along and leaving a review! :)

Oh, poor Draco!! That's so sad. This really is brilliant!
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Poor Draco? Well, perhaps. I tried to show that theirs was a hook-up of circumstance, rather than undying affection, but yes, he would not have enjoyed hearing another person's name while he was giving somebody the business. Thank you so much for the lovely compliment! I'm so glad you think it's brilliant. :)

"Because you liked Professor Snape too" AWW! I love that! Ooooooooooooo! She screamed, huh? Yeah, I'd scream too! And then pass out...
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
I doubt you would pass out - fear (i.e. adrenaline) makes you alert and on edge, not light-headed. It wouldn't be a very useful reaction to a threat if it made you more vulnerable! Relief, however, does make you pass out - or so I'm told. :-D

HAHAHAHA! Way to ruin it, Snape! Love it! Oh, at least he made up for it later.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
I should think Snape would be very adept at ruining tender moments. We always see him prowling the corridors at Hogwarrts, so it makes sense that he would prowl the corridors of his own home, too. :-D Thank you for continuing to review!
