Interesting chapter and well worth the wait.

ooo poor Draco, but that does provide an interesting connection question and knowing what she knows now, could she actually trap Snapes soul?
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Yes, poor Draco. :) And yeah, what does she want to do with Snape's soul? Tricky ethical questions there. Thanks for the review!

Some unexpected twists in this chapter, to be sure! I'm curious as to why Snape didn't manifest his presence when Draco and Hermione had sex, but did when she attempted with Teach. I'm also curious about Teach, and why Draco would warn her about him (and why Snape warned her about him before). The information on the horcruxes was very well thought-out and presented. Great stuff! Looking forward to more!

So many things you're curious about! Thanks for the compliment about the Horcruxes... the philosophical stuff is getting really complicated now (of course, I'm the one who's making it complicated). Glad you enjoyed it, though! :)

Ah. And still not a frisson of guilt over either leaving Snape to die (apparently it was up to him, as ever, to fight for life; no one is obliged to help him, obviously), and no apparent pangs over her parents, either. God, it must be nice to be a Gryffindor! Oh, yes, she's grieving--and not a bit of sense that she has some personal responsibility for either Snape's death or her parents' decision to stay in Australia. Too bad, so sad, it's _her_ grief that's important. And she got a free house. What's not to like?
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
I'm not sure quite what you mean to suggest here, unless it's that Hermione is too selfish for sympathy. Taking DH for what it is - without fanon colouring - Snape was already dead when Hermione left the Shrieking Shack, and she bore no personal responsibility for it whatsoever. (There is not much that can be done for someone whose jugular vein has been punctured, short of emergency surgery, which no one would have expected even Hermione to know.) As for her parents - well, Australia has much to recommend it over Britain (better weather, to start with).Naturally it's her grief that is important: this is a story about Hermione. If you find her character here unsympathetic, or the story unpalatable, I apologise.

I'm really enjoying this one. I think that Snape is trying to protect her from Teach but what Teach is up to is beyond me. Keep up the good work.

Thank you so much! The next chapter is in the queue, so hopefully it will be up soon and we will find out a little more about Snape. :)

Oh please let Snape be alive/partially alive and pulling a Voldemort like trick in which Hermione must figure out the trick and make Snape fully alive! I know you want to do it, come one make a fan happy.

As much as I would like to make you happy - and believe me, nothing would give me greater pleasure! - that is not precisely what is going on here. Hopefully, however, if you keep reading, you will find that it is something equally interesting and satisfying! For your definite reading pleasure, however, allow me to direct you to the very excellent 'A Posse Ad Esse' by Angel Mischa, which I do believe is archived on this site. You will certainly find what you are looking for there!

it is hard to share a house with a snape-ghost. a jelaous snape-ghost. and always theses dreams. do ghosts commuicate through it? i would say yes.book in the basement. where in the world is it hiding.and hermione hides her 2 informations of the day from her partron. what is she that doing for.? not trusting him? don't want to share? and when will she shrink back from these dreams, blissfull as they might be?
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
I think you've quite understood why she is keeping things from her patron - she doesn't entirely trust him AND she doesn't want to share. I would think Hermione can be pretty proprietorial about her research. :) Thanks for the wonderful review!

Love the dreams....
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Thank you! They're so much fun to write. :)
Poor Hermione, very nearly seduced by a bad man with ulterior motives. But at least Teach has revealed something of himself, though she doesn't realize it yet. Loved Snape's interference, but I'm wondering if he was interfering in the attempted seduction or in Teach snooping about the house. Snape himself certainly doesn't seem inclined to keep his hands to himself, does he?
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Excellent, excellent review! 'A bad man with ulterior motives?' Not saying you're wrong, but I'd be interested to know what makes you think so. And yes, why was Snape interfering? We shall soon find out. :)
Huh. Maybe she could floo to the basement? But it almost seems like there's two Snapes, one who wants her to find the basement, and one who doesn't. Very intriguing. Look forward to more.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Erm...? I'm sorry, I'm finding your review a little confusing! By this chapter in the story, Snape has opened the basement for her already. But anyway, thanks for letting me know you're liking the fic! More is coming soon. :)
Very interesting chapter, I loved how her beau was intimidated into leaving, the dream sequence was inspired and the questions intelligent.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Thank you! What a wonderful review. :-D
That was quite interesting. I'm enjoying the intricacies of the story.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Thank you so much! I hope it continues to interest you - we're almost past the intricate bits and onto the action! :)
A jealous ghost! How very intriguing! Not sure what you're on about with all this, but it certainly is interesting. Surely there's more to find in that house, as well, and it is very telling that Hermione is not telling all to the men in her life. She keeps her secrets well...and seems to be rewarded well, too, for keeping her counsel!
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Haha, I like that 'not sure what you're on about' - I know the plot exposition is creeping along, but believe me, I'm building up to something big. At least, I hope people think it's big.I'm glad you think it's interesting! Hermione is being very circumspect indeed.
Well, the oysters worked...
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
The oysters - and the wine, and the Bailey's, and the Jameson... Would've worked on me, at any rate! ;)
Lovely again. Charmed totally by this story. Cannot wait for more.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Hooray! I'm so pleased. Actually, I cannot wait for the next chapter to go up either - it's one of my favourites. :)
What was the record on the turntable? I must know. Please. At the risk of repetition, too effing cool. Thanks so much. I am choosing to think it was the Moody Blues. The song would have been "I know you're out there somewhere." It runs through my head whenever I think of someone looking for Snape.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Okay, so, somebody else asked what was on the turntable as well, and then wasn't satisfied with the answer. I will tell you what I was envisioning, but no complaining! In my mind, it was Queen's A Day at the Races, which is where I took the chapter title from. However, if you nourish a particular distaste for Queen, keep on with your Moody Blues idea. It's a good one, and the Moody Blues are fantabulous anyway, so then we will both be satisfied with Snape's musical choices. :)Apart from that, I'm really glad you are liking the story! It makes me happy. :-D
LOL... I love that Snape busted up her romantic evening. She would have regretted getting involved with her "boss" anyway. Though I was suspecting that the Snape ghost was just an elaborate trick and Teach was really Snape.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
It is true, one should never date the boss. Or the guy who holds the purse strings. ;)I think a lot of people thought Teach was really Snape - I promise you, this story is a lot more subtle (and hopefully more interesting) than that! :)
Great chapter! I have absolutely no idea where this story is going but I am glad I am along for the ride. It was funny that Snape scared Teach - I was thinking that there was some kind of connection between them. Hmmmm. I look forward to the next update!
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Thank you so much! I'm happy to hear you're 'along for the ride.' Of course, Teach does not know that the 'person' he saw was Snape, so we'll have to see how he reacts to that when he finds out! More good stuff is coming v. soon - the next chapter is with my beta!
So... are we getting a little anxious about data protection and personal freedom, yes? (Greetings from George Orwell.)I love this "mystery ghost lover" thing!
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Are we? Dunno, maybe it's because I live in a country where the government is currently considering holding people in jail without charge for an illiberal 42 days... ;)However, I do not wish to pontificate politically. The point is merely to provide a little insight into Teach's character.I'm glad to hear you like the mystery ghost lover - although it's not properly a 'mystery,' is it? We all kinda know who it is... :-D
Another amazing chapter! I can definitely say that this is one of my favorite stories. I love how Severus ran off Teach, and Hermione's reaction.I have read/watched somewhere that in order to have a ghost, or spiritual residue, the person who is manifesting does not necessarily need to be dead. This is especially true in cases where there is a stone foundation, as they say stone holds memories much better than any other material. Anyway, the spirit of a living person that manifests itself is said to be due to extreme emotional trauma in that place/time. Therefore, people can actually go back to a place where they have occupied during a time of severe stress and possibly see a spirit of themselves.I've wondered over and over if this is the case of Severus in this story, but I think that you have stated already that Severus is definitely dead. Hmmm....
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
I'm so happy this is one of your favourite stories! It gives me a warm fuzzy feeling inside. :)That's interesting, what you've read about a living person's spirit manifesting in a significant place. It sounds really familiar to me, too, so maybe I've read it as well or seen it on television somewhere.Snape is, however, well and truly dead in this fic, but don't let that deter you! 'Dead' does not have to equate to 'boring' or 'sad.' :-D
Up to your old tricks, you sly author, and giving us more questions instead of answers! A delectable mystery you've given us here. I'm glad Snape interrupted Hermione's night cap with Teach. I find him much more ominous than Snape's ghost, for some reason.
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Yes, I quite like my old tricks! I'm too aged to be learning new ones. :) A number of people have said they find Teach ominous - I wonder why that is! Maybe people are starting to think that ALL my OCs are evil masterminds... Glad you're enjoying the mystery!
Ooooh I like this! How creepy would that be, have some ghost pop up at random moments..
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Thank you! Yeah, creepy indeed. It's not going to be random for very long, though, as Hermione figures out what is going on. :)
Response from amenaruin (Reviewer)
I was actually just reading Talks with Ghosts by Ladymage Samiko, and Hermione just said this: "Benevolent ghosts are white. Malevolent ghosts are dark."Then I remembered I'm reading your fic, and I couldn't help but wonder if you used that same logic with your Ghost!Severus....
Response from julymorning (Author of Soul Man)
Ah. Well, I have not read that story, so I have not used that logic, but it's a pretty cool idea. Our Ghost!Severus is not really 'dark' - he just looks like a person. So perhaps we could call him a neutral ghost...? :)
