Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Yep, Dumbledore manipulated them right into marriage all for Harry - not for Severus! A marriage for a military tactic - not for any other reason. grrr
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Yes, I completely agree--a military tactic. Horrible. But you'll come to see more manipulative!DD throughout. I'm afraid it's a bit of a hobbyhorse of mine. Thank you for reading!

Oh man that scheming old codger! Dumbledore just railroaded them into this didn't he, playing on every button he knew to press.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Sometimes I think that I would like to hit Dumbledore very, very hard. :)

Oh my, it's over! This story is such a favorite of mine. I often find myself reading it aloud so I can hear the poetry in the prose. Awesome plot, fantastic emotion, vivid imagery, beautiful writing. Thank you!

Thank you so much, Magritte! It's lovely to think of you reading it out loud--thank you for that. I read every chapter to my husband when I finished them, and I do so love to hear stories outloud, so it's nice to think of you reading it that way too.I'm so glad you liked it. thank you!

I loved seeing Minerva stand up for Severus--and his surprise and gratitude that she would do so. I also loved the statement in the chapter where Hermione is watching Severus and thinking, This is the husband I have now. Life changes us, and we do have to get to know the "new person" we married occasionally. It was also good to see Severus acknowledge his problem that he doesn't know how to go on without being in the shadow of Voldemort. Now if only the Wizengamot will bring back the right verdict, maybe he can work towards figuring out where his life should go. The trial was so exciting--I'm looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Thank you so much, my friend! I was happy to see Minerva--she was my favorite part to write. But I'm doubly glad that you their thoughts at the end. I'm glad you're looking forward to the verdict. I am too. You'll know very soon! xoxox

You wondered if I would like your next chapter?please! What else could I possibly do but adore it!we finally hear Snape! and all the heplful testimonies. And I find it so important that the public gets through this war step by step.It is not like. ah, Voldemort is here to reign, and then, a battle the world isn't able to see being fought by those who were always around, and then awakening, Voldemort is defeated, we can go back to normal. It was not like that. There was a lot of pain and work and secretive things and plans and many smaller victories and battles to be won or sacrifices had to be made. and you spare neither trouble nor expenses to make the public see that Dumbledore is NOT holier than the rest of the world. Ahrgh I can feel with Hermione when it is clear that people don't even try to feel for Snape when it is clear that he was sent to his death on purpose, but everyone is furious that Dumbledore is killed. You put these two things on one level. that is courageous. But no one cares to mention.I like your way to lead through the trial. question is raised, person is heard, step by step, no mistakes.Intersting question: does Malfoy still have his mark? We saw it vanish from Snape, but does it mean everybody lost it? or did I overread something? What will the verdict be? will Hermione have to appeal?waitingsalva
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Dear Salva,I cannot tell you the verdict, you silly thing. But you will know very, very soon. I'm glad that you felt it was important for the court/the public to see the war step by step. It was very hard, narratively, to have to stop and retell everything that had happened, and yet, it seemed necessary to know what they knew, and to know the way it was presented to them, so thank you for going along with me for that. No, I think the Mark vanished from everyone when Voldemort died. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing, SalvaxoxoxoxoLariope

a great story. follows DH well and Snape isn't some gushy romantic. The relationship feels real, Great job!
The exactness of the 'facts' are not so necessary as the outcome. And regardless, it sounds good. Does it matter if it's right when it sounds good? What I love about it is that you are actually facing the fact that a man was killed and with an unforgivable. That's two crimes that most authors sweep under the rug with "Albus said." Albus, regardless of what he thought, was not a god. Saying so did not make it right. Within a war atmosphere though, when the commander issues a directive, is it not the soldiers duty to complete that directive? [Of course at that, the MoM would probably point out that the Order was a vigilante group, outside of the law and not a recognized army.]Poor Severus was just trying to make up for his mistakes pinched between two warriors that used him mercilessly. But as you said, Albus had him screwed down tight.

"Does it matter if it's right when it sounds good?" I don't know; does it? :) lol. I'm glad that my reasoning for the trial is working for you, that you're on board with the way I've chosen to deal with it. I looked into the whole "superior officer gave a command" thing, and it doesn't seem to hold up in court, nor does it seem that I can free him based on his role as a spy, as killing your leader isn't really covered. He really was left out to dry. I'm glad that you are still enjoying it,

"His hand crossed the invisible line that ran down the center of the bed and took hers." For me this line summarizes everything he feels fo her. He's finally accepted her love and let her in in his heart, admiting she won't leave him. He trusts her and it's not something he gives easily. I hope Kingsley manages to convince the majority of the Wizengamot (at least half of them but everyone would be better) that everything was done for the benefit of all the Wizarding Community even if some acts were criminal and punishable. It was war after all. Will every Auror be tried because of the deaths during the final battle? After all they intended to kill their opponants so it can be considered as murder. And if there are no circumstances given for Snape so there shall not be either for them. Which would mean the fondations of the Society itself are false and unconceivable. Because you can't ask people to kill to protect the community and after that try them for murder. I'm sorry I got carried away by the passion you inspire in me .... everytime, with each chapter. You make people question themselves on what their believes are (well at least me) in such situation. I really hope he will be cleared or otherwise it would be so unfair. I understand it can appear vey silly as it's just a story and no real people but I can't help the way I feel. So a HUGE thank you for everything you've done and written.

My poor husband endured a nearly hour-long rant on this subject just the other night. :)I feel strongly for them too, obviously. The love and feelings a person has for characters--its nearly as pure and strong and unadulterated as the love people have for their animals. It's good to feel for people you don't know. I feel sorry for people who don't read.Thank you so much for your review, and for following the story. It means the world to me.

write on.. as killing on demand is surely not allowed in many countiries as it is in mine the laws of war differ, but who is to call this an official war... in many hundreds of after war stories I read none took the task of writing so abundantly about the process, mostly the lakonic sentense "he was exonerated" had to do the purpose sometimes some help of Hermione's was added, so this is courageous to discuss ethics and laws...ps. considering your response to tinytexans - haven't you got a husband "modell Snape"? I have. He's not easy to live with *ggg* xoxox

Oh, Lariope! You have warmed the cockles of my little fangirl heart like no other. I was just thinking about how lucky we all are in the fandom to have this resurgence of good authors, selflessly sharing your stories, and about you and Mia Madwyn with COMC in particular. I love both of your stories and they are so very different. And if its not too presumptuous to speak about stories I haven't finished reading -- what? Snape's really an evil bastard and Hermione never loved him and she's taking him DOWN? -- as works in the romance genre they both offer very different thoughts on love and loyalty. I love that even in a work that will not be published, that you are not making money off of, you are both writing about such lofty topics. Mia's Hermione's strength comes from sacrifice, but your Hermione's strength seems more active. Even now as she is putting up a good show of support as the Good Wife and as Mia's dragging out the Muggle armory.I am so proud of the great work you're doing with this writing (and of so many other writers on this and similar sites). As for the technicalities.... Well, we don't know all that much about wizarding law, so I'll allow you to set a precedent. Obviously JK has set us interesting questions about ethics/morality/law in the story of Severus Snape. (Obviously a great deal of this fanfiction stems from the fact that from Book 1, a lot of us, at least intuitively, realized that the story was much more about SS than HP.) So I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the matter. Isn't this a question most people think about? As a kid somebody says "don't kill" and you start thinking about it. People say don't kill, but you here about war, "crimes of passion," the chicken you ate for dinner, the bug you maybe inadvertently squashed on the pavement on the way to school, and maybe you question. Here we have SS who spent much of his life sacrificing for a mistake that was made out of hurt from being rejected by someone he loved deeply. Even the smallest mistakes from the best intentions sometimes may be irredeemable. We all want to resurrect SS because we love him, and because we see the amazing good that he did, but JK has him make that one last sacrifice. We, your devoted readers, desperately believe that you forgive him and will give him a happy ending because deep down many of us believe (at least those of us in Calvinism-Influenced-U.S.) in justification. If you do good, you should be rewarded. Yet how often does life seem to belie that little belief.Anyway thanks for all the wonderful food for thought. From a technical standpoint, I really liked how you handled KS's turn of the courtroom and the little moment you gave us all to catch our breaths when HP whispered encouraging things in Hr's ear.So you know that I'm eagerly awaiting the next installment, right? And a lot of this praise goes to Mia M. too; I've loved reading the two stories in tandem!Go Shacklebolt 2008!--Hilaria

The trial, as well as Hermione and Severus' personal relationship, have all been handled extremely well. I sometimes find it hard to express the way things move me, or the way they work, so I haven't added reviews for the previous chapters, but I absolutely loved the slow climb for Severus out of his despair and solitariness, back towards Hermione; this progression for his character was very well handled, each chapter. This is a very affecting story; your final note concerning Dumbledore and Snape characterizes how I felt after reading book seven, although my feelings of betrayal were fixed in Rowling’s direction.
This is truly a masterful story.

It just ain't over til it's over, is it? What torture!I was so proud of Harry being Hermione's eyes and practically melted at Minerva's testimony. It's about time. Are there no parents of students bright enough to figure out how much they owe Snape for protecting their children? **sigh!**A truly wonderful story--as in "full of wonder." You certainly know how to pull the heartstrings.

Yes, Dumbledore did screw him very very thoroughly... I don't like him much after the 7th book. If i go through the last book, your story seems to fit into it. how could Hermione not know how to do a memory charm if she had modified her parents' memories? she had to of had help! anyways, I loved this chapter. i cried a lot, but i still loved it. I can't wait to read more!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I didn't like him very much either after the 7th book. It hurt me, to find out those things about DD, and I think that's why I had to back up in my mind all the way to the beginning of HBP and re-envision him as a man who wasn't quite who I thought he was. But I'm so glad that you see this fitting into canon. That really makes my day. More on the way! Thank you so much for reviewing :)

PS Forgot to say that you conveyed all the information that needed to be communicated in the courtroom in an admirably economical and lively (as in not long explanations of what happend by the characters) manner. That's got to be hard.
Response from RedRoo45 (Reviewer)
PS2 I just read throught the othre reviews (I've found the reviews for SL to be good reads too, as they often point out things I've missed or articulate something I couldn't). This time I missed your AN. I am terribly impressed that you are trying to construct a "real" defense for Severus. Wow, that's very different from the usual approach (which I'm not demeaning) of stating that he was tried and freed based on his help and the fact that he was asked by DD to kill DD. You really are being thorough, with this, the DHs, Severus' mindset ... .PS3 A very insightful reviewer pointed out that even though the trial proceedings dominate the narrative, it's S&H emotions that underlie the chapter -- this struck me as very true. So did another smart reviewers comment about the wonderful qualities of your imagery -- you describe so well and the images are never forced.PS4 Finally, I think your point in a response that perhaps how we see Dumbledore's actions depends on our own POV and personality is exactly right. I think you've done a marvelous job of excising DD character here and showing him for what he is, but I do understand completley why he did what he did, because I'm a detached, pragmatic kind of person. Doesn't mean at all that I like seeing Severus and Hermione suffer, and I think DD could have done a better job and that is WAS indecent not to let Severus, who would also understand, know what was going on. But I totally see his reasoning. But if I were more individually oriented, more focused on the specific and not the general, I don't think I'd see it that way.PS 4 So you were in Hanna's path too? All we got was tons of rain.PS5 I really didn't need to keep writing PS, I just thought it was funny (OK late at night sense of humor ...)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I share the love of endless post scripts. :)I'm really glad that you weren't bored by the trial. It was enormously difficult narratively to have to retell the story in a dramatic way. And I will hopefully never write a trial again, because the amount of research (most of which never ends up on the page) for such a thing is just unreal. And again, I'm absolutely delighted that it's still S&H dominating the feeling of the chapters, as it should be. I always worry about losing them in the plot.I learned a lot about people's feelings, and my own feelings, about DD during this chapter. I find it easier now to articulate and distinguish between my feelings about him now, though I am still murderously angry with him. :) Yes, Hanna made landfall just south of where I am in NC. But it was relatively minor here--the rain wasn't even extraordinary, which was nice, because we live in constant fear here on the coast. oxoxox

Great job, Lariope. A very satisfying chapter in many ways: the wizarding world sees Dumbledore for what he was (loved the electric silence); Minverva tells it like it is; Snape appears to be taking more of an active role in his own defense; Harry shows that he gets it (what about Ron, BTW?); Kingsley comes into his own (I've enjoyed how you've described him -- as a colorful bird, once and as a warrior now); and we can all feel righteously pissed off at ol' Tiberius (and he actually does make a valid, or at least debatable, point -- that murder is still murder even when the "victim" asks one to do it. Echoes debates over assisted suicide in our world).Of course, I want to know what happens, but you really had to end the chapter there, dramatically speaking and for us to experience the wait at they will. But the way you ended it, with them falling asleep was a very gentle cliffie, despite the sadness of Severus believing that he can't learn to live. Strange that such a brilliant, resourceful (one of the things I admire most about his character), experienced man would believe that he can't learn to live differently. And it is a bit of a slap in the face to Hermione, if he would only realize it. But I suppose having not expected to live in the first place and not being sanguine about the Wizengamut, he can hardly think straight about the future. Perhaps his acquital (which I fervently hope is going to happen) will be a salutary shock.Meant to just leave you a quickie review, but seems I couldn't. Thanks for sharing your wonderful story.RedRoo
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much, RedRoo, and I'm so sorry that it took me so long to respond to this. The new chapter really took a lot out of me. I had to rewrite several times--it seems that the closer that I get to the end, the harder it is to write well--I don't know if that's because I don't have room for mistakes anymore, or because I am sad for the end to come, or what. Ron... You know, I've always thought that Ron had a harder time just charging forward and accepting their relationship. I don't think he's against it particularly, or wanting to work against it, only that he doesn't have Harry's need to charge into the fray. I suspect we may see a brief hint of Ron in the chapter I'm writing now. (The last one, incidentally. But it is going well so far). I hope you like the next. Thank you for your always thoughtful, always inspiring reviews. xxoxoLariope
That was painful to read. Poor Snape. YAY Hermione, and I loved how Harry stood up and demanded his own trial too. Feel like I missed what passed with Draco, though. There's more to that, yeah?I'm trusting in Kingsley, in the power of "right". *crosses fingers*I loved the ending. It was so bittersweet, so powerful.Simply because he said, “I do not know how to get on with it,” he said so softly that she strained to make out the words. “I have spent my entire life in Voldemort’s shadow.” is exactly why he HAS to be freed. He deserves to find out what is beyond all he has ever known. What a wonderful chapter!

Hi, Dyno! Sorry it took me so long to answer this--the new chapter really took it out of me. I'm glad you're trusting Kingsley. That makes me glad. More is on the way. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing, my friend. xoxoxox

Thank you for continuing to write amazing chapter after amazing chapter. I'm hooked on your story, as you know. This really is one of the definitive SS/HG IMO. Keep up the great work!

Riviting, as always. How do you defend someone who was acting under orders, to kill the person who gave the orders?? It would be truly hopeless if Dumbledore's portrait was not allowed to testify! It is like the movie "I Robot," with Will Smith. The robot's creator put him in an impossible situation by making him promise not to tell anyone and promise to do what he was told before he knew what the task was. The task was to kill his creator. I loved tha movie, and I love this story. I will hate to see it end.

. Yes, constructing a defense for Snape was not fun. Particularly when I realized that it couldn't be done. But I feel comfortable with the Jury Nullification. I think it was the only way. I hope you end up satisfied by the trial! You soon shall hear the verdict! Thank you so much for reviewing!

Beautifully done. I like how Snape gradually rises to his own defense in his own irascible way. And Hermione's hidden tears mirror the love that she has, that they share, and the hidden truths. Just lovely.

I swear to you I drop everything when I get the story notification and yet there are always at least 46 reviews ahead of me. How does that work??simple gratitude that someone shared her feelings, that she did not live in a world filled with souls she could not understand My heart squeezed when I read this line. Then the tears began to fall as Harry offered to be her eyes. I just love it when harry is mature. So rare and lovely. Funny I completely understood the Elder wand crap when you write it. However I had no clue what the hell JKR was talking about in book 7. Clearly you are the better author. Warrier Kingsley. Also Gwen Staffani's first son's name. Ironic or not?

!! I'm so sorry that it took me so long to answer you. I have been very remiss in my authorly duties. This new chapter beat me up. It's my only excuse. :)No, no, not the better author, just willing to beat it into submission. Seriously, if I never think about the Elder Wand again... that would be ok with me. I hate that bitch.Woah! I had no idea that was Gwen Stefani's son's name. How weird!!Loves you...oxoxxo
