Seventh-year student Hermione Granger decides to marry the one eligible wizard who did not ask for her--the horrid but powerful Severus Snape. All is not sweetness and light. Be careful what you ask for. Or, as has been said by many a wise witch, "Marry in haste; repent in leisure." MLC

Care of Magical Creatures recently received two awards on "Secrets of the Dark Vaults," a Russian fanfic site. Best NC-17 and Best Maxi Translation. The Nine-Year Plan was awarded Best Mini-Fic! I'm delighted to be in translation and to please the readers in Russia!

With the completion of Care of Magical Creatures my fanfic output is going to slow way down, but if you want to be sure to know when new fics post, please follow me on twitter. I don't tweet much, but I'll surely tweet that kind of thing.
About Mia
I came to the world of Harry Potter relatively early, after first resisting it because it just seemed too trendy. But when the first book came out in paperback in the US I picked it up at the airport when I was about to catch a flight, and two chapters in knew I would be ordering the original from amazon.co.uk in hardcover as soon as I landed.
I came to fanfic late, waiting until after I'd read DH. That means I've been totally obsessed with the fanfic world of Harry Potter, and most specifically the SS/HG ship, since August of '07.
I'm helplessly and hopelessly hooked.
Reviews for Care of Magical Creatures
Wow. I've sat down and read to this point of this prodigious and amazing fic in the span of 24 hours. Kudos to you for hooking me so thoroughly! And I can assure you, with all the force of my two degrees in English, that I think that there's no more perfect description of what Sev and Hermione were doing in this chapter than to say that they "simplied." *giggles* In fact, I got quite a laugh out of it. Good show. *putters off to read more*

Oh, thank you so much! I love knowing that simply works as a verb for you!
Wonderful...truly wonderful! xxx
Thank you for not giving up. xxx
I loved it when the penny er...knut droped for Severus. Perhaps he will appreciate Hermione more for it.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I hope so. When he doesn't understand it's hard on both of them!
I probably should get an account on ff.net to leave you reviews where I read first, because this way, I might spoil readers here. Well, readers, just wait and see. That conversation at the beginning of chapter 45 is smashing. Absolutely perfect Snape. Mia madwyn made that conversation a jewel in fandom a little piece of perfection with brilliant characterization and lurid verbal sparring. Mia, congratulations for letting Hermione masterfully wrestle information out of Severus, and having Severus succumb with his trademark grace.

"you are hurting me..." So wonderful that he can tell her! As usual, you have drawn me in further, and now I will anxiously wait to find out why Hermione burned the book and why she had it in the first place.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you. And yes, he did manage to tell her that, finally, didn't he?

Truly beautiful chapter. You have managed to convey Severus' desperation and Hermione's struggle. I loved the ending, that he can only find peace with Hermione.

Thank you.
There were so many great scenes in this chapter.
I enjoyed the early volley between Severus and Albus; "A word, Severus." "Only one?" "Perhaps a few more.” This exchange set the tone for the whole chapter in a very subtle way, revealing Severus urgency and distress, anger and pain, longing, desperation and insecurity. Such complex emotions displayed throughout the chapter in a sometimes subtle sometimes very straight forward, yet artful way. I enjoyed the insertion of Potter into the chapter. I loved how Harry knew just where to find Hermione, while Severus did not. I was touched at how Harry still deeply cares for Hermione. I also liked how Hermione acknowledged Harrys’ concern and was not dismissive towards him while still clearly demonstrating her feelings towards Severus. The scene between Severus and Harry was acerbic and powerful, exuding their strength as wizards and love of Hermione while simultaneously exhibiting their dislike of each other.
I, too, have recently lobbied for the end to the formal names of Miss Granger and Professor. Well, how interesting where your muse took you in this regard. It was very touching to hear how Hermione feels about being call Miss Granger.
The section beginning with "Miss Granger—" he began, his voice choked. "You always call me that," she said softly.” was amazing. It built and built, then settled with them sharing a meal. Then it built and built again until BANG we get “and he sighed, "Miss Granger, if you aren't in our bed tonight, I'll tear this castle apart stone by stone until I find you.” WOW! I gasped aloud at that.
I was very moved by the ending “Miss Granger," he whispered softly into her hair because he simply had to speak the words, to hear them in the darkness and taste them on his lips. And even in her sleep, she responded with a sigh, "Professor…" And his body melted into hers, into sleep, into peace.”
Perfect.
Best, Kat

Thank you so much. I know my muse is driving everyone crazy with the Miss Granger/Professor thing, and if I could change it, I would. I know why they do it, but I also know why it bothers people. I hope that at some point something will happen that makes a graceful change, but I also truly believe that despite appearances, for the two involved, no inequities are intended or felt.
Response from GryffKat (Reviewer)
I completely get the Miss Granger/Professor thing now. I found the chapter so touching in that regard that it bothers me less. I don't believe that inequities are intended or felt either. I suspect it is the insecurities of Severus that drives the formality. I think it will be up to him to initiate the change. I think once he is ready to truly face his feelings for Hermione, he will be freed to use her name. I think he is afraid to open that floodgate and admit he feels vulnerable towards her.
I look forward to seeing him cross that emotional bridge. I don't think it will be anything casual that would drive Severus to use her name. I suspect high drama or action would be necessary for Severus to realize what is truly within him as well as what is at stake.
Best, Kat

I love this story. I'm utterly hooked, and I really try hard not to even start WIPs, so this is rating very highly with me. Well done!
I have a question, though: when Hermione is talking to Severus about meeting with her friends, she says it's Monday afternoon, but when they're leaving the RofR she thinks how much she hates that it's Tuesday. So what day is it?
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Thank you for trusting my WIP. I promise, I will finish it!
And thanks for reminding me about that error. I fixed it!

I look forward to each chapter. I was so excited. I work two jobs and don't get to read as much as I like anymore and this was just a wonderful way to start my weekend. Thanks for an update!

Two jobs?!? I am glad if I can bring you any kind of relief from that pressure, at all! Thank you for your review!

Sigh! Beautiful as usual. You are so truely talented as a writer, this is the most wonderful story. I love how some chapters don't even have to have much going on in them, like this one. So much achieved just through his thoughts and the way he looks at her. I hate watching the little curser move down toward the bottom of the page indicating that I have neally finished ready the chapter. It means I have to wait another week for more.

I am glad that Severus didn't mess up their relationship for too long. They both need sleep, food, and each other. What exactly was Hermione studying? Was she doing work on their rings? I wonder if she was actually reading children's books. Does she want children with Severus? Hopefully not in the near future, because there is a war and schooling to finish.
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I don't think either Hermione or Severus have indicated any desire for children. In fact, I think the prospect quite terrifies them.

Some very beautiful, poignant, moments. I especially loved the visual of him teasing apart the snarls in her hair, one by one. How tender and loving. Really brought tears to my eyes. Such a good chapter (as always, dear).
Author's Response: Thank you, thank you!
Ok I get the whole name thing now -- thanks for that. And once again you have provided a chapter so full of subtle emotion and intelligent dialogue that the reader is transported right into the room with the characters. As always, thanks for sharing and I look for to your next submission, JoAnne

So good.... now why'd she burn the book?
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Oh -- the book! Well, that remains to be seen, doesn't it? (It will be revealed, o course!)

Oh, Mia! This is absolutely, intensely, amazingly exquisite.I was one of those who, in the early days, was lobbying for them to get past the "Miss Granger"/"Professor" stage of things, but you just convinced me absolutely that she understands what those names mean and that they communicate so much more than would the simple names that others get to use for them both. (Incredible speech of hers, by the way!).
I loved his mad search for her, his exchange with Harry who is waiting for her with the fierce loyalty of the friend that he is, and the fact that the Room let him in because he did indeed require admittance . . . and, even more importantly, because she required his admittance. And I adore the fact that she really did understand what she was seeing when she looked at him the day before.
You are an utterly, utterly amazing writer. I am blown away.
wow.

"Miss Granger, if you aren't in our bed tonight, I'll tear this castle apart stone by stone until I find you."
That was good, it was just what she needed to hear. It's good that Snape is starting to figure out some things in his head. That was a very tender love scene at the end. It's funny how some of the most erotic things that occur between a husband and wife in bed are the things that have nothing to do with sex.

I agree. I think the most important things that have happened between them have happened in bed, but weren't about sex.

Thank you, for this story. It's beyond brilliant. No matter how dark, how insanely hurtful it is at times, it actually keeps my belief in... something, alive. And it helps.
Update, as much as possible. It makes me feel alive. Thank you.

Oh, good.
Man, you chapters are always so intense! I love it! I love the story, I love the way Severus acts, I love how they needed each other, I love how Severus blames himself (well, I don't really love it, but I like the way you write it). . . I just love everything about it. I mean, from a literary point of view. The emotions are all so real and vivid and just. . . it's indescribably.
Wonderful!

Well, at least they've made up again.
I do hope that some day they'll get to a point where they can just be happy together without all this much high drama! Even if that only happens once this tale is over. :-D
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
Don't tell me you're tired of high drama!
Response from Mint Stick (Reviewer)
It makes for a good story. ;-) But if they're to have a long and happy life together eventually, I hope not every day of their 100+ years together will be quite like this!
Response from mia madwyn (Author of Care of Magical Creatures)
I agree with you 100%
