I'm a forty-something American woman who is addicted to the SSHG pairing, relatively new to this fandom. I'm also considering starting some original fiction soon...
Check out the story I co-wrote with Remarkable -- it's called "Hidden Attractions" and (as soon as it's through the queue) it's archived under the penname remarkable_linlawless.
For those who are interested, I've got two WIPs at my website (which I will eventually post here, but not until I have a complete draft). It's easy and free to join the website, so I hope you'll visit!
I am honored that my story, Witchy Woman, has been selected as a featured story for September 2010. Better yet, this honor came with the very awesome banner at the top of this post!
Here's a couple of banners my friend Atuliel made for the two WIPs at my website:
Reviews for On Veelas, Light and Dark
Hee! Something did indeed occur to her - the perfect opportunity for some observational hypothesis testing with a known Veela -Non-Veela pairing. That's exciting! Will Gabrielle's Initial Attractiveness Quotient diminish as Ron gets to know her (image of angry frump wearing old dressing gown and curlers with fag end hanging from mouth while watching endless re-runs of mind-sapping soap operas on telly)? Or will he simply not notice (a possible confounding factor)?
I had to laugh when she realized Ron still thought Gabrielle is perfect. Too funny, you just know Ron will come crawling back then (he always does). Love, love your story.
Gah!!! totally wish this chapter was longer, I was just settling in for a good read and then poof it was over.
Thanks as always though for the update, I really like where you are going with this story.
LOVED Hermione's teasing of Severus in the last chapter, and how their friendship is developping further here. ^_^
Excellent chapter! I'm hoping right about the same time that Hermione finds Severus to be quite lovely, Ron looks over at Gabs and bolts. *evil grin*
Gosh, Severus seemed very upset about her research. I wonder why. Hmmm, I have NO idea <wink wink>Great story!

Woot! We got a Snape smile. I suspect there are more to come.

Thanks! So glad you're still enjoying it! :)
Hermione does like playing with fire, doesn't she? Still loving this story.
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
She does! Gotta figure life's gotten a little boring for a girl who spent her school years chasing down a megalomaniac... ;)
I knew it, now Hermione knows it too.
Response from mick42 (Reviewer)
That is a wicked laugh you have there.
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
I've been going to Evil Genius school, didn't you know? ;)

You must be a straight O student.

Methinks the gentleman doth protest to much, the room of requirement will provide more than she has bargained for..

Brilliant update, I loved that Hermione dared to tease Severus there at the end:-))
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
Thank you! Glad you liked it! :)
I knew he was Veela. Any doubts I had were nullified once Hermione unrolled the scroll with the picture on it. I think Hermione really appreciates what Severus is doing for her. He's the only one not coddling her. He's treating her exactly the same as he always did before. I agree with Hermione's assessment that Severus likes her. It's absolutely true that if she only irritates him, then he definitely likes her.
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
Hehehehe. I think you're exactly right about Hermione preferring to be treated just like always. Thanks for reviewing! :)
Hermione’s back-talk to Severus was certainly feeble, though she seemed to think she was scoring zinger after zinger. I’m surprised Snape bothered with such insipidity as long as he did. If the aim was for witty adult banter between equals, it didn’t work for me.
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
The aim was actually *not* witty adult banter. I see both of them as rather immature emotionally, which means they should sound somewhat like teenagers. And I think they do.As an aside, much as I—and most authors I know—appreciate constructive criticism, I would prefer not to receive comments that are only negative. If you can't find even one nice thing to say, why are you reading the story? I already know my writing isn't perfect, and it's hard enough to put it out there without getting reviews that make all my hard work feek wasted. And I would bet I'm not the only writer who feels that way.
Severus' bit of blunt honesty re. no-wedding-day seemed to do more good than all the condolences and tissue boxes in Hogwarts. And Hermione suddenly felt rather good - definitely feeling better ;o) LOL - trying to imagine the look on S's face at the prospect of sitting together and sharing secrets... such a shame he wouldn't turn around.
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
LOL! Half the fun is imagining the expression on his face, don't you think? ;)
I'm not sure if 'cute' is what you were going for, but that was honestly my reaction to the final exchange. It's been an enjoyable story so far; thank you for sharing it.
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
Hehehehe! The early stages of romance should always be cute, don't you think? Glad you're enjoying it, and thanks for the review! :)
Hermione's right... anyone who rates as merely "irritating" in Severus' book is clearly considered far superior to the unwashed masses around them.By the way, I competely agree with Severus that it requires too much energy to hate. That's why I've always considered true hate to be a particularly wasteful emotion. That's so much energy that could be channeled in far more positive and productive ways.
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
Yes, I agree with that as well, Hate really does take a lot of energy to sustain. Thanks for reviewing! :)
Er, oops, The Room of Requirement cannot provide food, and that threw me at first, but then got down to their exchange in the library and loved it! Oh yes, he likes her, and won't tell her. I love how you kept him in character. But If male Veelas are so opposite to female Veelas, - Oh. O_oh, opposites attract. Funny that the anicient tome's picture was so like Severus. You'd think that with all the human DNA involved in their make up that there would be some differences. lol Looking forward to more!
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
Hehehehe ooooooops! Totally forgot that about the R of R. Oh, well, at least the story is AU. ;) The genetics are interesting, but if you figure the Veelas are relatively inbred, they would wind up looking very similar through the generations -- particularly if they're wearing the same facial expression! Anyway, glad you're enjoying the interactions between them. Thanks for the review. :)
Progress (jumps with joy!)! Thank you for a wonderful, witty story with a hitherto unread-of twist.
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
Thank you! I'm so glad you're enjoying it! <3 :)
Poor Hermione! The Room of Requirement is her friend - a tea service is a comforting, welcoming touch. Why do I have a mental image of Minerva marching to Severus' door, her temper ramping up with every step? She's starting to look like a vengeful Scottish chieftain... and her tartan is bristling...
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
LOL!!!! That mental image of Minerva is cracking me up! :D
Severus is a bit touchy, isn't he?
Response from linlawless (Author of On Veelas, Light and Dark)
A wee bit... though really, isn't he always?! :D
