Many people were affected by Voldemort—his followers, his victims, and the innocents who had been caught up in the war. After the war is over, how are they dealing? As the Wizarding world recoups, rebuilds, reorganizes, and adjusts to the social and economic changes caused by the aftermath of war, there are still people fighting to correct the wrongs that are out there. Hermione is one, so is Draco. Lucius is another.

I love to write. A dreamer, a creator and filled with wonder, imagination and life. Sometimes I get lost in the other worlds I've read and in some I create. It's all good, I’m in good company.

Reviews for The Swing of the Pendulum
Oh gads another Marriage Law fic! I liked Bernice's reaction to being invited to Harry's on weekend during Christmas hols. Shouldnt she ask kHarry first?I love the reactions of the students to the stuff in the papers.
Response from beaweasley2 (Reviewer)
Yep, it was on the first chapter as the prompt I chose. But this is an anti-ML. Grimmauld Place will be Hermione's home too and I'm sure Harry won't mind.Thank you for the review.
Yep, things are going to go from bad to worse in the Wizarding world. I love that you added in PC to the mix! The Slytherin reactions were great. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Response from beaweasley2 (Reviewer)
Of course they will. We've only just started with this story!Thank you for the review.
Things are brewing in the wizarding world. It's funny that Goyle would turn to Hermione for tutoring. I mean it makes sense, but he's hated her for 6 years.I like the OC's, especially the girls.
Response from beaweasley2 (Reviewer)
Who else would he turn to other than the smartest Muggle-born he knows? I think Greg has had a change of heart. You'll see. Thanks and thank you for the review.
Good job showing a worn torn Wizarding world. I'm surprised that Hermione would opt to enslave Winky. What changed her mind?the Malfoys are in for a rough time in Azkaban.
Response from beaweasley2 (Reviewer)
Thank you. I used the historical account of the UK after WWII as a guide. I think she came to realize jsut how important it is to house-elves to have a purpose, home, and a family to love and serve.Yep, Azkaban will be torture.Thank you for the review.
An interesting and engaging premise, but I'm disappointed that an un-beta-ed version was posted. The multiple spelling and grammar errors are really distracting. Perhaps the next chapter will look better?
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Sorry. I checked and corrected what I found. Dunno how that happened. If you ever see any, you could always email me - though SW and I'll fix it. Only human, you know.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
While I appreciated your comment, and I'll admit you had a point, though none of them found were spelling errors. Grammar and comma issues, yes. I had my beta and SW69 check over my chapter. I hardly think that SW69, a very efficient moderator and admin of this site and the one running this challenge, would have let an un-beta'ed chapter slide by with multiple spelling and grammar errors. Also Ladyinthecloak, another admin on the site and a fantastic beta, was gracious enough to go over the chapter for me with a fine-tooth comb, which I dearly appreciated. The few things that were found have been corrected.
I'd have appreciated your comment more if you had contacted me directly rather than point out those issues, in a somewhat vague manner, in a review, (as these types of comments should have been directed). It is the kinder thing to do and most of us respond favorably to kindly worded critique. Thanks.
"accidental" drowning of Dementorized prisoners -- hah! Draco is right to be fearful. Very rude of Cissa to not show up in court to support Lucius. I hope Harry has dinner with Draco, perhaps have Hermione come along to discuss Marriage Law tactics; I hate to think of Draco having nobody all summer to talk with. Thanks for updating!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Yes, that was one of the gross things I came up with, the drownings. There is a reason that will be apparent later as to why Cissy didn't show up at court.Draco will have friends. He made quite a few at school over the last year.Oh, Draco will have plenty of opportunity to talk about ML tactics!Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
What a complex story -- there are so many layers. You have done an amazing job with the plot and character development.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Wow, thank you very much. And thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
I love discovering all the people who are trying to help Hermione.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
I'm glad that you don't mind my making up so many new characters. Thank you very much for the review and the pretty stars.
I thought she would have to resot to going to Draco for financial help. I can only imagine what the conditions of such an arrangement would be. So far, Draco's attempt at getting to Hermione thru Harry is off to a very rocky start. I hope he didn't think it would be that easy!?
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Nope, Hermione is an indipendant witch. Yep, Draco is having to befriend someone who is unimpressed by his name, money, gifts, or charm. He'll actually have to just win him over by being nice. Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
Edithe and Graceilla seem to be totally off the rocker. In their opinion the girls should lay back, close their eyes and think of their duty for Magical Britain. Haven't I heard that somewhere before?Hermione working to get a studen't loan and dividing her time between job and studies won't sit well with Draco. I bet he's going to try to "save" her - which will throw him out of her good grace even more.Where was Ron in this chapter? It doesn't seem that Mrs. Weasly is too happy with him, and he doesn't seem to be visiting Harry either.Good chapter, as always.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Yes, They are quite the little old bitties! Rather unrealistic expitations there.Yep, working and studies! Our girl will get it, besides there is Apparations and Floos to get her there and back. Saves loads of comuter time. Nope, but Draco will have a plan.I haven't shown Ron yet. Yet.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Opps forgot to thank you for the review and the pretty stars. sorry.
It will be fun to see how Sunday dinner with Uncle Stanford goes when he hears from Edithe how her unions are falling apart left and right. And I really pay big Galleons to be a fly onthe wall when Edithe finds out that Granger chit is working at the Ministry and going to law school.Poor Draco, he's trying so hard and keeps stepping on his own toes. I think he is genuinely attracted to Hermione, but there is so much history between them that he's going to have to be truly resourceful to win her hand. Perhaps when they are studying Dane Law together he will have her attention as a study buddy. Now I want to sit back and watch what happens. Who knows? Perhaps Severus will even choose to visit Brittain. What? Stranger things have happens. Yeah?A lovely chapter you have here, dear. Looking forward to the next one.!Beth
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Oh wouldn't it though. Yes, Draco is in new territory trying to make friends with someone who doesn't care about his money or name or social status. He's going to have to change his tactiscs completely.Severus might visit, or not, I can't tell you.Lucius will be out in a chapter or two and that will mix things up a bit.Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
I knew I shouldn't have started reading this until it was finished! It's awesome! Demanding reader satisfaction of updates twice daily is out of the question, i take it?
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
I'm very flattered that you like this story so much. I'll see what I can do about updates. Will aiming for weekly suffice? Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
Response from Twilexis (Reviewer)
*grumbles* I guess weekly will have to do. lol Seriously though, I'm on the edge of my seat.
Oh, no! Poor Hermione. It's good to have a job, but I've heard the line "We're a little understaffed, can you start today?" before... Nice work!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
LOL Yes, that line would scare most people. Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
I've really been enjoying this story, and eagerly anticipating each chapter. The characterizations are wonderful. I'm loving the thrill of Malfoy's chase.Great job!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Thank you very much. SW has my next chapter and I hop e it will be up soon. Malfoy will have some competition faily soon. Thak you for the reveiw and the pretty stars.
I just found this today, looking for something to read while waiting on updates to other stories I'm following. This is a wonderful and unique take on the marriage law stories. I would love to see you continue it. I want to see Draco and Hermione get together and see Lucius enter into their fight against it. I loved to see Severus return as well.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Gads! I meant to pull this one for the time being! I ahve 3 huge WIP's and they are taking all my spare time. I planned on coming back to this and really giving it my attention, but I needed to finish one or two of the others first.
Bad Ron! What a heel! “What’s sad is that his efforts to help the wounded Muggle-borns had been over-looked in his trial, and he’d never received the acclaim for his discovery,” Ginny stated.“Well, if you want to write it up, I’m sure my dad would love to run the article,” Shelia stated. “My father will, too,” Luna said wistfully. “We have a lovely picture of him on file.” It seems that it is NOT the time to be pointing out that there is a way to reverse the steritilty curse. But maybe I misunderstood what Shelia was refering to when she talked about writing an articleCan't blame Hermione for rejecting Draco out of hand; as she pointd out, they don't have a good 'history.'
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Yeah, Ron is a realy prat. Wait - it gets worse! ooopsI'm sure there are several potions that Severus deveolped during the time mentioned, the Sterility Reversing Potion is only one. Draco said he had Snape's journals - more than one.Oh, especially considering the news she'd gotten right before Draco's proposal. *snerk* Nope, it's hard to go from 'four evil loathsome... to happily engaged! Surely one year of nice doesn't balance things.Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
Yay! Snape is alive! regarding Genrou's question about when Harry & Ginny and Ron & Hermione got engaged: I assumed they simply made that up, claimed it, even if untrue, (and here's a baby on the way to prove it.) I like your OC, Merilynn-Elizabeth. I hope she helps in the fight later on!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Yes, Severus is alive and kciking! lolWell, Harry and Ginny's might be true, possibly, but obviously Ron and Hermione's isn't as they don't have their stories straight.Merilynn-Elizabeth is a stickler for the rules, proccedure and forms, but she's a good gal. You'll see her later.Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
continues to delight! So happy to see Draco's good idea to make certain no one is left out. Good for Minerva and Poppy! Clever Poppy! this is great.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Thank you very much. Yeah, Draco is leader of the male rebellion. lol Finally top man on campus! Did you really think MInerva and Poppy would agree with this law? lol nope.Yes, Poppy is a very gifted witch, she'd have to be with everything the students could do to each other nad the spell damage they could get into!Thank you very much for the review and the pretty stars.
What an original idea! marvelous! such a clever twist on the MLC. At least the Wizarding world had one good law, making its fathers take responsibility, something the Muggles were centuries behind in, due to no DNA testing until the 1980s.And gotta love Luna's dad for taking advantage of his printing press to give the poor kids a heads up.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Thank you very much. Yes, this is a ML fic - but no, it's not a doormat take it and smile kind! Hermione + Draco will kick buttt in this one! eventually! And Lucius will be in the mix! Hermione+ (LM? or DM?) pairing... Shoudl be interesting.Yes, I had to have at least one 'good' law - but even this will or can have a down side! Oh, Mr. Lovegood is a good man and cares about the 'truth! Of course he'll print what really going one. Right next to the Crumplesnordak (sic) article!Thank you very much for the review and the pretty stars.
Response from pookah (Reviewer)
Even with your new and improved Draco, I am hoping Hermione ends up with ALMOST ANYONE but a Malfoy!
You are doing such a good job with this tale. But what about pureblooded witches? there are as many of them needing husbands, after all. or did I miss something? Potential wizards wishing to marry must show that they: .... can give rights over spouse’s property... I'm glad you had one of the pureblloods explain that! I was thinking that a good solicitor might claim that that means they are GIVING the rights to their spouses, so the witch gets the property rights. Being a female, that's how I'd read it!--Richard Scarry!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Thank you very much. Oh, doll, wait until you see! Yes, there is a bit of 'matching up' going on, but you're eyebrows will rise when you see the age range!!I actually found that bit, (sort of) when searching about bridal contracts, doweries, marriage contracts and arranged marriages. and since Hermione is Muggle-born - in come the Slytherins! Who else is better suited to tell her about the 'old ways' and 'old customes' than Draco? Cecil Benders, and friends... Okay so I added a few pure-bloods.YOU ARE PRACTICALLY THE ONLY ONE TO HAVE CAUGHT ON TO WHO Richard Scarry IS!!! I'm so impressed! Fifty points to your house!Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
“See, Hagrid uses the Ministry of Magic’s classification system to determine what is appropriate for each year level: one X for first-years, two X’s for second, three X’s for third-year, and so on,”SO funny!
Excellent chapter! No freedom of speech if it might be offensive to someone we were persecuting last year.
I have wondered before if muggleborn kids were ever forcibly taken from their muggle families. Espeically in the Middle Ages, when you simply couldn’t take a serf’s child and say to the Lord of the manor, “We are educating him to be a wizard. He’ll be back, if he chooses, in some years, but he’ll be more powerful than you and you won’t be able to control him anymore.” Nice to see something that might have been deemed necessary in the time of the Founders, back on the books. So Progressive!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Yes, but soooo true! What classification do you think Skwerts are in?Thank you very much. Well, turn a bad spell around (Tracking spell) and use it for good - right? lolI have no idea but in Draco's letter he hints that things had happened this way before. It's entirely possible, and would explain why it was so easily passed in this time. I may have to keep this in mind!Thak you very much for the review and the pretty stars.
Goyle mentiones shillng and half pence- no longer used in muggle money. (Maybe the Muggle studies textbooks are old or hopelessly outdated.)
Euell Gibbons is a Wizard! I LOVE it!
You have brought up a good point, all the Muggleborns and sympathizers that were hurt or killed in the past year. That will mean that fewer Wizards will be born to the next generation, because so much breeding stock is dead or out of action. Bringing on a marriage law is a ‘logical’ way to remedy this.
Interesting chapter- you have made some excellent deductions about how life would have been after the battle of Hogwarts. Many muggleborns dead or hurt, Deatheaters in prison, and the lame-ass government saying, “It’s all right. Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain!”
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Or possibly I'm old and out dated! lol Yes, the books might be old, but I don't know English ccurrencies all that well, so I looked them up - might have been an old site.Yep, good ol' Euell Gibbons is a wizard - you'll see him later on.Yes, and there in lies two problem that a decreased population base has - fewer babies, fewer employees in the Ministry! You'll see that later coming up!I used history - especially post WWII as a model and looked up conditions in European countries... so this fits right in with the 'pattern'. History repeating itself and all that. Loved the "Oz' quote!
Thank you very much for the review ane the pretty stars.
So, Hermione has learned that until house-elves can be rescued from the enslaving enchantments that bind them, they may well be happier enslaved. I was surprised that she did not add some clause about each generation being free of the obligation unless it was mutually pleasing, or giving Winky and her descendants the right to break the contract at any time.
Luna is very sensible at times, people think she’s flighty but she has a clever and observant mind. Interesting that the return of bad memories is longer and (mentally) painful.I think you did a good job getting so much information into the first chapter.
I like your portrayal of the Malfoy family.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
There was a book I read about little fuzzy creatures that were only two feet high. They liked being 'pets' of humans because it was safer than not and being in the wild. I think Hermione may have done some research into house-elves and possibly came to an understanding. Better to be in a good home and happy than drunk on butterbeers.I see Luna as someone who sees things as they really are and isn't afraid to speak ehr mind, regardless of what comes out. BUt yes, I think she's brilliant. The memeories ging back into your head and having to settle back into place gave me the idea of 'reliving them' as they settle, only with Pensieve clarity. I know, me mean.
Thank you very much. This story has a lot of infromation throughout. Hope you like it. Thank you for the review.
GIRL POWER~~!!
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Yep! Thanks for reviewing.
Of course Poppy would realise what's going on; thankfully she's siding with the girls - or at least she's not happy whith what the ministry wants to do.I loved the scene between Draco and his father. They didn't even give them a minimum of privacy! Thank god for Legilimency.Oh Ron. I do see that he felt trapped and used for a moment, but he really could have stayed and tried to so see Hermione's POV. I hope he will come around, just like he did in DH. But I feel for Hermione, should he always react this way. I do suspect they won't end up together, though. What a complex story you are telling us! I'm hooked, impressed and very, very delighted.
Response from beaweasley2 (Author of The Swing of the Pendulum)
Thnakyou. Yes, Popy doesn't like what's going on so she is siding with the girls. It' snot hurting themselves, so why not. No, Lucius and all the Death Eaters are not being treated all that well in Azkaban, and it was a way for father son to communicate. Ron in my opinion is a prat. But he's got his troubles too. He's on he first list and has (like Harry) already been matched up. I'm glad that you like this even thought I hav packed so much into this one. Thank you for the review and the pretty stars.
