Darned Child and Devsgma have combined their talents to tell you the story of what has happened to our favorite pair. It starts with a few letters from one extremely grouchy Potions maker to the manager of a used book store. Canon through Deathly Hallows to the point of Severus Snape's supposed death at which point it becomes AU.

Merely a fan playing with words.
Reviews for Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road
I just can't IMAGINE Hermione ever being interested in Ron Weasley! It's Snape and Granger who work so well together.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
LOL We're glad you agree. ;)
Poor Severus.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Aww, you're sweet. ;)
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
Oh I want to hug Snape. He'd probably hex me, but he needs SOMEONE to give a crap. JKR sure and hell didn't. Mean old thing. Have I told you I'm married to a Snarky scientist with a phd in chemistry? ROFL
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Ah! You have our Potions master in Muggle form then. Good on you! ;)
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
We've been married almost 22 years. He doesn't look like Snape but he does seem to have a lot of similar personality traits. Fortunately, he has had a lot of good people around him or I expect he could have ended up making atrocious choices in his teens. Very rigid in his thinking. Always wears Khaki and polo type shirts (solid colors or big horizontal stripes). He'd never be caught dead in a hawaiian shirt. If he was a wizard he'd be all in black, I'm sure.
Oh no, not the least bit romantic, Simon.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
That was a fun chapter to write. ;)
I'm enjoying this story so immensely that I keep forgetting to review. VERY good.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
You've done exceptionally well and you'll hear no complaints from us! ;)
Cute way of ordering dinner. Love the way the quill embellished! :)
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Thank you so very much. We had fun with it, as you can probably tell. ;)
It's curious. For a man supposedly head over heals for Lily he is quite charming and trying to seduce her. Willing that even despite his saying otherwise. Would that mean the curse can be fought with another love to replace the first? Great update.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
The "curse" has been broken already. When Hermione called him back from the "grey" zone where he was alone with the sobbing Lily is when that was lifted. She accidentally used the "release phrase" DD had built into it. The potion - which DD used in conjuction with the curse - is the stumbling block that's left. It's a very old potion and one that - at this point - has no antidote. It will not allow another love to grow and blossom while it's there. :(
Response from snitchette (Reviewer)
Honestly, to me it's like he's already in love with her.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Well, I can see where you're coming from, but in my experience just because you're "in love" with someone, doesn't mean you don't appreciate, have affection for and perhaps lust after someone else. In my 30's, long time after being married and still in love with my hubby, I developed an attachment for another man. Nothing came of it, because I wouldn't allow it to, but I still have a soft spot in my heart for him. I haven't seen him for almost ten years, but I think of him now and then.
LOL. Poor Severus. If only someone would treat his heart with the same care they treat the books.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
That would be a nice change, wouldn't it? ;)
At least he is trying. The quill was a fun touch.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
He is and it was. ;)
hah! Sheesh, sure is taking her a while to figure it out. Oh well, I guess she thinks he's dead so maybe that would make all the difference. Maybe she will give him something on which to dwell other than Lily.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
She saw him die, there should be no question, really. :(
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
Oh god, I can't wait for the last movie just for this scene which I know will have me bawling my brains out why my kids throw popcorn at me or try to act like they don't know me. I can't wait and I also dread it. It's definitely a weird feeling. LOL.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
I don't know if I want to see it or not to be honest. It took me a long time to recover from reading about it - as far as being able to write him anyway. Seeing Rickman - as Snape - die. I don't know.
Response from mimmom (Reviewer)
I hate it when Rickman's characters die in films. Though he's really GREAT at it. Which is why I kind of can't wait because he will be great. I cried for days when I read the book, though. If I think too hard on it I cry again. That damn doe patronus...the thought of it was just agony. But I KNEW. I knew by book 5 about Lily. That stupid moment with that stupid spell turning snape upside down and calling Lily mudblood. I knew. Gave me a chill right up my spine and I went to my lovely Snarky husband and said, "He loved Lily, he loved Harry's mother." Of course my husband did not care at ALL about this. But he remembers it. He read spoilers about book 7 before it came out and said, "You'll like it." Then once I read it I knew he was referring to my thoughts on Snape's motivations. I wasn't reading fanfiction at the time, I had no idea about all the snape/lily stuff. It was just me, in my own silly head.
Poor "Simon". LOL. This is fun. I'm glad I started reading. I'm off to read the next chapter!
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
We're always happy to snag a new reader! Especially one who enjoys reading it as much as we did writing it. ;)
Thank you for all of your effort to create such a compelling story. I love the way you traded points of view and the way Severus is never quite sure he knows what Hermione's slang means. Clueless Cormac! Can't figure out why his tongue won't work! Tries to pry it loose with his fingers? And then still tries to hook up with Hermione! How blonde can one person be?And Draco -- kind of like one of those inflatable clown punching bag things -- everytime you see him, you just want to hit him! That is my kind of Draco.I love your original characters: the ivy, the coat rack, and the combs all had such a sense of duty and pride of purpose. Yorick is the only falcon that I know can roll his eyes. It was so enjoyable to be invited in to your imagination.Thank you for sharing the story with us. Everytime I read it, I laugh.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Ah, thank you so much for letting us know that you continue to enjoy it. We really do appreciate it, a lot! ;)
That business negotiation was kinda fun :-)
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
It was very fun on this end too! Thank you. ;)
It occurs to me that Ginny will be furious at Hermione for this. I hope she'll be able to replace Ginny with better girlfriends.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
I don't think we'd really thought about how it would affect Ginny and her feelings - those that we've portrayed here - toward Snape. I have a hard time imagaining her naming one of her sons after him, but I guess in JKR's world all is rosy. ;)
Loved the conversation where he tries to explain his ties to Lily. Good depth of psyche there. Glad he realizes that Hermione, being a member of humanity other than himself, will never be able to truly understand his attachment.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Thank you so very much. I thought long and hard about how it would have affected him for all those years and to think about losing a major part of "yourself" would be scary as all get out.
If you and the former Miss Weasley are EVER cursed with offspring, I forbid you to use my name, alone or in conjunction with the aforementioned Albus. If you go against my wishes – I shall find you.
LOL - well said!
You disappointed me the most when you became quite a good bookseller instead of an extraordinary Potions master.
Again, well said! I was disappointed too - as I usually am in fics - that her chosen career was so mundane. Not that there's anything wrong with selling books - but it would have been nicer to see her settle down with a bookshop sixty years from now, after she had a career in something where she'd have made better use of her mind and curiosity.
I liked the bit about where he seriously offers to use humans for volunteers! :-)
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
LOL I always thought he'd be very ticked off to find a Potter named after him. It only added insult to injury to have it follow Albus.Well, I love bookstores myself, so I don't know that it's mundane. I'd probably get myself fired for reading too much and not doing enough other stuff. As far as my view of Severus is concerned, if you can do Potions - what else is there? ;)He was quite serious about using humans. Not only would they make a few gallons, he wouldn't have to put up with the danged mice!
Loved that chapter!
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
LOL. That was a fun and yet difficult chapter to write. Thank you.
Wow! What an amazing chapter. I resisted reading this story for a long time because the orginal is such a sad story. But for some reason your story called to me yesterday and I wasn't able to stop reading until I'd reached this chapter. I can't say enough about how much I've enjoyed reading it so far. And this chapter is just brilliant. I'm not sure Severus will like the consequences of his actions but I shouted with joy when he blasted Dumbledore. I was delighted to see him win just one battle against that callous old man! Thanks for giving me such a cathartic moment! So now, I guess his life in hiding is at risk but at least he doesn't seem to blame Hermione for revealing the truth. That's a hopeful position for him to face the hard times ahead.Thank you so much for the wonderful story. I can't wait to read the next chapter.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Welcome to our little corner of the world! And thank you for such a wonderful review."I resisted reading this story for a long time because the orginal is such a sad story."We never intended to follow the original step by step, but we thought it was a delightful way to have them "meet" and get to know each other without all the old stumbling blocks in the way.
I feel sorry for him, but I don't think he's ever going to be what Hermione really wants. Not this damaged.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
You may be right.
I think you guys need to change/improve your story summary. I figured this would be a bit of a silly story, with lots of snarky letters written between our two favorites, but it really is much better and more exciting than the summary leads you to believe.
Thus, i would change it.
Anyways, i really liked it, and thought you did wonderfully at keeping them both in character (though i feel like severus missed too many muggle references that he should have understood, but i guess that's just a matter of opinion on how he would have been raised as a child.) Thanks for sharing your work with us!
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
I'm so terribly sorry it's taken me this long to respond. I'll need to check the area where it's supposed to tell me there's been a new review left. Thank you so very much for leaving such a nice review.
Lol I love this so far. I can just picture Snape jumping up and down out of glee (which he only does because he is completely alone), or storming about his house in anger when she fails him again. Can't wait to see why he needs these books, and how it all works out.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
LOL Thank you!
evil evil cliffie. love it.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Whisting noises barely cover the sound of a shoe shuffling the dirt around. "Cliffie? What cliffie?"
oh my. this story is a gem. it's different. really different. I love it. just know that, okay? :)
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Hee! We're very happy to hear that. Thank you so very much.
I love this. I just flat-out love it.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
I cheated and I shouldn't admit it. Your other reviews gave me a hint what was in the chapter you were reviewing. Your declaration of love, while highly prized, didn't tell me a thing. LOL. This part was quite fun to wright and we're quite pleased you love it. Or - uhm - were you referring to the story as a whole?
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Write that is. It is late and I almost wrote right, but then stuck a W on the front of it and didn't look again until I posted. Head/desk. I need go bed. Night!!!
Response from mock_turtle (Reviewer)
well, yes, I do mean the whole story...but I think the particular things that prompted me to declare my love are just the way simon thinks in this chapter. the way his eyes are no longer completely under his control, the line "Did I eat the... Yes, I did. Thursday last. Blast!" was just absolutely perfect (it's so realistic)the way hermione is mostly under control of herself. just the interplay between them works so well! If I had to describe your writing, I would say that as opposed to taking a romantic story and heightening the color saturation to make the colors more vivid, you've simply adjusted the focus so that even the more humanly ordinary parts of love seem extraordinary. does that even make sense?
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Sorry, I didn't get notified that you'd responed to my response and after reading it, I just had to respond – again. LOLDarned Child and I try so very hard to make it "real" and you don't realize exactly what high praise that is when you say it, but it is. We want the "that could be me!" feeling when someone reads it. Aside from the actual use of magic that is! LOL
Exquisite.
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
Such a beautiful word, exquisite. Thank you seems so inadequate somehow when placed up for comparison.
I wonder how he will react to hearing his real name? He is so entrenched in his Simon identity now. :)
Response from devsgma (Author of Beyond 84 Charing Cross Road)
We'll see quite soon, won't we. ;)
