I stumbled onto the Potterverse in the summer of 2007, the weekend that DH came out, which was also the weekend I had a screening of the latest film. I reread HBP after starting DH and realizing it had been awhile, so, by the end of that weekend, I was overdosed on Harry Potter . . . and needed a fix! I stumbled onto SS/HG fics. These turned out to be far and away my favorite of these writings, in part because they're almost all wickedly erotic, funny as hell, deeply moving, and a vindication of intelligence as the ultimate aphrodisiac!
In RL I am an actor and a writer.

Wonderful chapter! Snape is breaking my heart in little pieces but he continues to be very true to himself, kwim?I enjoyed Sev's insights on the chess pieces being distracting... I can agree with that in a strange sort of way. ;)Great writing!
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Actually, one of my brothers is the real chess player. I'd need to see the board myself, and even then....Severus does have some intriguing complications, doesn't he? Thanks for reviewing, my dear!

Still no idea who the bad dude is. Awaiting with bated breath!

Let's just say that no one has guessed it exactly right, yet I think it makes sense when you find out. But you tell me! He will be revealed in the next chapter....

Oh dear, poor Riley. What an evil cliffhanger - nice, but evil!Actually, I'm kinda surprised at Severus' ability to recongize the connection between them and state it plainly. Good for him. I hope he get's the chance to restore his memories before he meets the enemy. And about our mystery man, why would he think he could take both Severus and Hermione by himself? I know Snape has been out of the WW for a while but he was quite formiddable once upon a time. Surely, this person can't be so stupid as to think he's powerful enough to take them both?? As usual, I can't wait to read more.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I was sorry to do that to Riley!I think Severus' recognition may have come as something of a surprise to him, too--and it's one thing to think it, but quite another to admit it out loud....Our mystery man will be revealed shortly, and he does indeed have a lot of confidence in his own powers.Looking foward to hearing how you like what happens next!!Thanks so much for reviewing!

Oh my what is going to happen? I'm on the edge of my seat! This chapter was wonderful. When Snape looked at her and said, "Mr Weasley was right, I think," I literally shuddered. That scene was so well written! Can't wait for more!!!
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
That line made me shudder when I wrote it, because I honestly had not set up the earlier scenes for this moment. It simply happened. Clever buggers!I'm so glad you're enjoying it. Thanks for reading and reviewing--just be careful you don't fall off your seat!

I think you have written an amazing story. I love the premise and I think the use of Bronte's verses is amazing. I cannot wait to see what happens next. I am assuming the thin, pale-faced stranger is a Malfoy, probably Draco. Update soon!
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I am so glad you're enjoying it all! And you may assume away---it makes me very happy to hear what you're thinking. (And my lips are otherwise sealed!) Thanks so much for reading and reviewing!

Beautiful chapter! I love your writing style and your portrayal of Hermione and Harry is dead on.I found your insights into Snape's memories to be moving as well as thought provoking. You raised some really interesting points... Thanks!

Interesting...I see you added a new mystery to the mix. Very nice, of course now I'm on tender hooks trying to figure out who this man is.

He's been watching since Spinner's End....All will be revealed soon. (Okay, some will be revealed soon!)Thanks for reviewing!

I wonder who this person hunting Severus is. I'm thinking it's Lucius Malfoy, or maybe one of the Lestrange's. I think once Severus thinks things through, he'll decide to take his memories back. If not for anything else, then at least for curiousity's sake.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Curiosity can be a dangerous thing, but it can also be illuminating. Can't wait for the reveal of the mysterious stranger! (Not the next chapter, but the one after.)Let me know what you think when you find out the answers to your intriguing questions! Thanks so much for reviewing.

Lovely lovely lovely all around! Really an incredible story and one of the better DH compliant stories that takes a concept and effectively explains while keeping me entertained and engaged. Broke my spirit to see Riley's end. So did SS/HG have a kid? I wasn't sure why they were at the train station.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Thank you so very much--I am so glad you enjoyed it!Perhaps they did have a kid, but they may have been there just to support the whole gang. I'll leave it to you to decide that particular detail. I'm just happy they are together and you liked how I got them there. And yes, losing Riley hurt like hell. He was a good egg.

Thanks for another nice chapter. My head is once again full of speculation on the thin, pale follower. Perhaps it's not a Malfoy after all. Perhaps it's someone who doesn't agree with Harry about Snape being a hero. That person would consider Snape a traitor to the Order and the wizarding world. But I keep being tripped up by the surveillance charm left on Spinner's End. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'm going to assume only the homeowner or someone they trust could do such a think. Given this assumption, perhaps our mysterious follower is an angry Order member to whom Snape (or Dumbledore) also entrusted with the location of Spinner's End. I'll be shocked if any of the above is right but I now think the follower is a Weasley - and my money is on George. Right or wrong, thanks for giving me the chance at having such fun speculating!
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Ooo, some fun ideas! My lips are sealed.... We'll talk later about who might be able to put an alarm somewhere. Can't wait til you find out what's right and what's not (but still fun to hear!). Thanks for reviewing--I'm enjoying the speculations!

A wonderful new chapter! You manage to capture his ambivalence and insecurity so very well and make it so plausible, that he reacts as he does. And still I'm so very sorry that he makes everything quite so hard for himself... he makes me want to shake him well out of his stubbornness. And I still find it quite apalling that he seemed to have spent all his time in these extremely humble abodes? His way of punishing himself, I suppose, but still...
The mysterious stranger adds a nice bit of suspense to the whole thing.
Author's Response: I've always thought that the Snape we see (even though that's through Harry's very prejudiced eyes) is a man who beats himself up better than anybody. He's the kind who would figure that if he survived it was only so he could suffer more.
I've known a lot of people like that. Hell, I've been one of them from time to time! And we could all use a good shaking!
And ah, that stranger.... Peristent little bugger.
Thanks so much for reviewing!
I have just caught up with this tale again. I really like it. i think you have captured the feel and sound of the main characters, as they might have become. an excellent tale with great pacing.

can't recall if i've mentioned how much i love the poetry you choose to begin each chapter with. this one is a lovely example.oooh, presumptuous hermione, indeed! poor snape, with a head full of fuzzy patches.very exciting chapter. i'm a little worried about paleface in the boat. but hey, perhaps a little brush with danger is just what is needed to bring ss & hg together.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I'm so glad you're enjoying the poetry. I started this whole thing with the bit at the very beginning, which has always been a favorite ("Cold in the earth, and fifteen wild Decembers have melted into spring..." which I actually first read on the 15th anniversary of my dad's death). So it was really lovely to go searching for more and to find how much of her work fit the story I wanted to tell. (I especially like this one and the references to "that melancholy boy," which is often how I see Severus). You have reason to worry, at least for awhile....Thanks so much for reading and reviewing!

just ran off and read that whole poem, imagining having read it at such a meaningful time. *shivers*every time i read another chapter of your story, i think, i really need to look into her poetry, because the snippets you use are so evocative. finally bookmarked a page to help my poor brain remember. :)

So, who is this pale-faced stranger? A DE, most likely. A Malfoy, perhaps? Sweet of Hermione to make supper. Hope Severus will appreciate it.Looking forward to the next chapter. Cheers. /M

Revenge! still curious as to who the man is. A canon wizard? A Death Eater, presumably, seeing as how he called Snape a traitor. Ahh... Draco? Lucius? See. my mind jumps immediately to the Malfoys. I don't know. And I feel bad for Snape. He is so obviously not happy with his life, no matter what he may tell Hermione. Continual solitude? When we know the depths to which Snape has loved? Gah, no. He deserves a happily ever after, so to speak. And little by little you can tell that Hermione is falling in love. Cannot wait to see how you are going to progress their relationship! Oh, I've been meaning to tell you-- I love the use of Emily Bronte's poetry. Beautiful. ~kristie

Thanks, Kristie, it's wonderful to hear your speculations as you go--it makes me so happy that you're thinking this way!I just posted the chapter in which we find out who he is, and it is someone you know, but.... well, he's talking to her at least. that represents progress, right? i think you've captured their voices very well - the repartee is enjoyable and amusing. :)
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
It's gotta be killing him, but I think he might be a little hungry for conversation (Riley's hardly a chatterbox). I'm so glad the voices sound right to you--they are enormous fun to write! Thanks for reviewing!

Lovely chapter. I'm not sure wether I should be sad for Snape's obviously bleak life, or excited about the dancing-around-each-other the both of them do... the atmosphere you created is so dense in every chapter, every time I finsih one of them I'm just sad that it's over for the moment being.
Author's Response: It is a sad life, but then his whole life up to this point wasn't exactly a party with hats, was it? I do think he's rather enjoying the dancing--else why would he keep coming back each morning? But of course. he'd never admit that....
I'm so glad you're enjoying this!!
Alcina vom Steinsberg's response: You're absolutely right, though I so desperately hoped for him that when he's finally free of everything, as one thinks he should be right now, that he will be able to find some peace and beauty in his life, and enjoy it... but of course, it's sooo difficult to step over one's own shadows.
