I stumbled onto the Potterverse in the summer of 2007, the weekend that DH came out, which was also the weekend I had a screening of the latest film. I reread HBP after starting DH and realizing it had been awhile, so, by the end of that weekend, I was overdosed on Harry Potter . . . and needed a fix! I stumbled onto SS/HG fics. These turned out to be far and away my favorite of these writings, in part because they're almost all wickedly erotic, funny as hell, deeply moving, and a vindication of intelligence as the ultimate aphrodisiac!
In RL I am an actor and a writer.

Someone else looking for him?! Is it that mysterious figure from the last chapter? omg. Oh, and how without those memories Severus would remember killing Dumbledore but not why, I have never thought of that! Hermione must find him!!! Can't wait for more! ~kizzy
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
The mysterious figure continues to be mysterious.... You;ll find out the truth about him, I promise--but not for awhile yet.Yes, I was intrigued by the idea that Severus gave away some crucial memories, thinking he'd be dead soon enough and it wouldn't matter. Lucky for him, Hermione's a clever woman.... I think you'll quite like the next chapter (and it's on its way soon!).Thanks for reviewing!-Wendy

I wonder who else is looking for Severus and why? I totally agree with Harry's guess that someone is looking for him because if 'something is off' he would have the nose for it.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Yes, I think his instincts are sound. Hmm, why *would* someone be looking for him? Next chapter should be up soon--I think you;ll like it. Thanks for reviewing!

Wow, what a dense, fascinating, interesting chapter! I'm really impressed! So fascinating ideas you have and possibilities you explore... the Chess idea is brilliant, and your theory about the memories intersting and quite fitting.
Again, I can't wait to read on...
Author's Response: The memories themselves have intrigued me since I read DH. Then considering what effect it might have had on Severus to no longer have those memories became my central motivation for writing this whole thing.
And canon seems to be mute about his skills at chess, but I would think that a mind like his would have made him very good at the game.
There's a wonderful piece called "Midnight by the Weasley Watch" by Excessivelyperky that has Severus accompanying Ron to a chess tournament. JOdell did an exqusiite layout of it--go to http://www.redhen-publications.com/Roads.html and take a look when you have time. It's great fun.
And thank you so much for reading and reviewing!
Intriguing. I love the idea of Severus walking around without any memories of how much good he has done. Poor man.And as usual, I can hardly wait for the next chapter. Cheers. /M
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I do think it might make a difference if he knew he had given up something but couldn't remember exactly what. And he's just the type to assume that what he surrendered was even worse than what he retained, silly man. Thanks fro reviewing!

Uh-oh, suspense, suspense... cool idea, giving him a Fedora! *giggle* And why is he intrigued about Hermione?
Great new chapter, I liked it very much. Ron plays a nice and sensible role, als does Hermione and Harry - I enjoy this immensely. And again can't wait to read on...
Author's Response: Oh, I do like a nice fedora...so useful for slinking around in (whoEVER you are!). I think they can all be sensible, given the chance.
So glad you're in suspense! More suspense coming!
i like how you handled hermione & ron's breaking up. and i am definitely intrigued. i also felt sorry for the poor chess set with nobody to play for. as for the mystery man - if it's not snape, i'm thinking maybe lucius.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I like the way you think (and I'm sure the abandoned chess set does, too!). Keep reading; it may be awhile before you find out the identity of that mystery man, but I think it'll be worth the wait....Thanks for reviewing!-Wendy

Is he back? His he? Is he?? This was a great chapter! And the reaction of teh abandoned chess figures was just adorable!Very much looking forward to the next chapter! /M

Oh, I'm so glad you picked up on the reaction of the chess pieces! It just struck me as I was writing that part that they'd probably be really anxious about not having anybody to play for! So glad you liked this chapter. Almost there!-w

I'm glad that Ron was able to take her decision with the grace of a good friend. It would have been an unhappy union for both of them if they had gone through with the marriage. Her heart belongs to Snape, who for all intents and purposes has died. But Hermione is a bright witch, and she notices the little things: Where do you begin looking for a dead man? Ultimately you go to his home, to Spinner's End. In her search, she had noticed the Wizarding chess set, and the apparent inactivity the pieces had known... they were happy to have someone in the home. But she also noticed the tell tale square that had less dust than the rest of the house, the square place that would have been just about right for a chess board that had been collected and taken away.“The dust,” she said. “Something just about the right size, something square, had been sitting on the table in his bedroom upstairs. Nothing else looked out of place. Nothing else had been touched. Don’t you, see Harry! The house has been closed up all this time, so it’s hard to tell how long it might have been like that. But I think he took it with him after Hogwarts. I think it was the one thing he had left. And I think he still has it.”Despite what Harry tells her about the lack of evidence that Snape had survived, she's having none of it! And a good thing, too, because now Snape is following her to learn what she might have found in his home. His special tickling and tingling ward had alerted him that someone had entered his home, and he was surprised to see who it was and how much she had matured. I can't wait to find out what Severus decides to do. Will he reveal himself to her? Does Harry know that the Potions Master survived the war? Does Kingsley know?I have tons of questions!!! This is a great story, Wendy. It holds my interest, and I'm thrilled when I get a notice that you have updated.Beth

Beth, I love this play-by-play! It's so wonderful to hear what you're thinking as you go.You've guessed some important things...and let me just say, one thing is not quite as it seems (but I love that I've got you thinking in that direction!). I just sent another chapter through the validation process, so it should be up soon (but TPP's mods are very thorough, so it might take a bit to get to you). Thank you so much for reviewing!-w

*eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee* Does she really have no idea she's being followed!??!? Evil cliffie... evil, I say!!! Well, someone's making an appearance... could it be the other pale faced someone, like I dunno, a Malfoy perhaps??? Or is it the real deal? Y'know, it's a good (GREAT!) thing you update so often or I might have to bang down your virtual door!!
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Is that you banging away out there? Shoulda said something, I'd have let you in.Yes, 'tis an evil cliffie, I know, and I'm afraid there are one or two more coming, but at least they're coming as fast as I can get them out. TPP is very methodical (which I love), but that means it takes a bit longer to get through.'Twill take a bit to find out just whose pale face that is....(laughs evilly, thinks "Oh, goodie, I got her hooked!")

oh. my. gosh. That was by far my favorite chapter. What I loved about it:Hermione didn't marry Ron, and he was so so sweet about it, telling her to go find Severus. Loved it.Hermione playing the detective just so suits her character, and her inexplicable belief that Severus is alive is so endearingly sweet. The mysterious man watching her. I *want* to believe its Severus, but I'm uncertain, what with your slightly ambiguous descriptions. Could go either way. *gulps* Love and coffe (or tea) from me to you! ~kizzy

Oh, I;m so glad you're loving this! I do think Ron's a decent guy, and he'll be back much later.Meanwhile, we'll find out the identity of that mystery man, but not quite yet.... All is not exactly as it seems, though Hermione is a very smart lady.I'm drinking my coffee AND my tea (love 'em both!) and raising my cup to you. Thanks for reviewing!-w

Enthralling chapter. I loved the air of mystery and the way Hermione's mind worked. Nice sense of apprehension and details as well. I can't wait till Hermione is proved right.

This is definitely developing nicely into a really great story. I love the build-up for Hermione's research of Severus. That will explain a lot of things when she does find him alive. I'm looking forward to that. This is definitely one of those stories that you don't want to have rushed. I'm looking forward to reading more.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I'm so glad you're enjoying the pace. I was a little afraid that I was going too slowly, but I really did want to take what JKR had actually written and get it where I wished it had gone as plausibly as possible. I'm very glad you're looking forward to more! Thanks for reviewing, it means a lot.

I must confess I'm beginning to get a bit impatient about Snape... it's a nice chapter, but they seem to be stuck a bit, don't they? ;o)
Author's Response: All I'll say is there are two chapters to come that get her closer, and then....
*shudders* Ron and Hermione squick me more than anything! But, that being said, you handled it wonderfully-- reluctant Hermione, Ron not a complete prat! Oh, and thank you for sparing us with further bedroom details, *shudders again*!! Glad we are heading off in the right direction next. Give our Hermione her REAL happy ending, lol! Lovely update, elise, thank you for writing!
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
They don't really squick me, but they also don't sound right to me. And Ron may not be her true destiny, but he is one of her two best friends and a decent chap. Glad I didn't make you shudder more. Shuddering's over. All better next chapter. On with the quest!I'm not any good at bedroom details, so it works out just fine here, but you'll eventually need to use your imagination....Thanks for reviewing!

I'm not sure that I approve of their marriage. Hermione said 'no' so many times that there has to be a reason. Ron is upset that she isn't a virgin (stupid double standard) and although she smoothed it over I believe it will be a bone of contention later on.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Well, Hermione's "no"s weren't really definite (I think if she'd been sure she meant it, and for keeps, he would've stopped asking), and I don't know that Ron's actually objecting to her having some experience so much as curious about where she got it, but your points are very well taken.Read on--I think you will like how this all ends up. Thanks for reviewing!!

Of course I will love how it ends up, it's potions under duress!

Well, well... Ron finally prevailed and Hermione agreed to become his wife. How very typical of him to want to think of her as coming to their joining as a virgin when he could not provide the same "uniqueness." This is not exactly "a marriage of true minds," and I wonder how it will progress. Will there be children? Will they make a go of it? What is in the future for them? I had to chuckle when I read your Author's Notes at the beginning of the chapter. No anger or hate from me, only looking forward to the coming chapters when people get a chance to correct their mistakes. You're setting up the coming chapters very nicely, and I can't wait for your next update!Beth
