I stumbled onto the Potterverse in the summer of 2007, the weekend that DH came out, which was also the weekend I had a screening of the latest film. I reread HBP after starting DH and realizing it had been awhile, so, by the end of that weekend, I was overdosed on Harry Potter . . . and needed a fix! I stumbled onto SS/HG fics. These turned out to be far and away my favorite of these writings, in part because they're almost all wickedly erotic, funny as hell, deeply moving, and a vindication of intelligence as the ultimate aphrodisiac!
In RL I am an actor and a writer.

This was a beautiful chapter. I am glad Severus used magic, so no he only needs to be convinced to take his memories back. Now, here you have a big job ahead of you. Thanks for sharing. /M

Yes, going back to magic is a huge step, but Hermione's job isn't finished yet. Thanks for reviewing!-w

Wow. This is a real 'page-turner' or more appropriately, "scroll downer'. LOL REally liking is, and can't wait to read what's to come.

At least he started to use magic again, I suspect that started his healing process. I'm hoping his memories returned to him will finish the job.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
He is a wizard, after all. He needs his magic. And he needs his memories.Thank you so much for reviewing!

I think Severus will eventually restore his memories, especially if Hermione asked it of him. I wonder if he will be able to tell her of his feelings for her. I wonder if she'll be able to do the same before she leaves. That is IF she leaves.

Great chapter!
Loved the banter between Snape and Hermione! Your characterization is dead on. :)
This is so well done and thought provoking! Thanks so much for sharing.

I'm so glad you're enjoying it!Sometimes it feels as though I just have to get the two of them together on the page, and they take over. Good to know they don't seem to have been taken over by imposters!

Me thinks we think alike! I couldn't agree more with this comment!“It’s not that I hate him,” she had tried to explain to Harry. “I understand he had to make some pretty cold-blooded choices. He was up against pure evil, after all.” She shifted in her chair. “But I just can’t see him anymore as a kindly old grandfather, either. He was complicated. I’m still sorting it through.”Another great chapter! It was fun to hear from Snape ;)
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Albus is actually a much more interesting character when you see all the complexitiea and contradictions...but he's not a warm, cuddly grandfather figure at all. And one sees him him way at one's peril, as we both know well! Thanks for reviewing!

Dolohov! You had me! I had no idea he would be the villain! Severus where are you? Please update soon -- this is a big cliffhanger. Oh, and Hermione showed her brilliance by pretending to be scared and then coming up with the knife -- great scene work.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Next chapter is being validated, should be up soon--sorry to keep you in suspense, but glad I had you fooled! I don't think anybody guessed it was Dolohov. Figured he'd be someone who'd want to go after Hermione as much as Severus...and who deserved to have her finally take care of him for good. She's pretty brilliant.Severus will be there as soon as the mods release the next chapter--but there's still more to be resolved. Thanks so much for reviewing!

Whew, what a chapter! I'm so glad that both survived, and obviously not badly hurt, because I really feared otherwise. It's quite macabre, and yet fitting, that Hermione gets Dolohov with a kitchen knife *g* (though it is highly unrealistic that she should be able to kill him thus and in the chest on the first go - usually, the blade gets avertedb y ribs etc., as I am told. I'm not complaining, though, I'm just too glad she did him in.
Snape's musings are QUITE interesting! ;o) Is he finally being honest to himself?
Author's Response: Well, it was a BIG knife, and she had the advantage of his falling forward onto it.... (Do I sound like I've actually done such a thing myself? This is the first time I've even written about something like this!) I liked the idea of her getting him without the use of magic, with her muggle heritage giving her a slight edge.
He may be starting to be honest with himself, yes, but he may not be quite ready to share that honesty....
Thanks so much for reviewing!
Alcina vom Steinsberg's response: The big knife is the problem there, as there isn't that much space between the ribs and you obviously have to hit a certain angle. But of course, I don't have hands-on experience myself *g*.
Author's Response: I'm so glad we're both working from secondary sources! (I was at a screening last night, and there were an awful lot of people who had to surrender their pocket knives to security after going through the metal detectors--I'll know to talk to them next time!!)
Who needs a wand when you have an enraged Hermione?
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Yeah, there are times when magic could be useful...and times when you just don't need it (lucky for us!).

I got really ticked off that Hermione acted so terrified and was quite relieved to see it was an act to get the upper hand. Well written chapter and I especially appreciated the fact that Severus did not get there in time to help her defend herself but I'm sure he will arrive in time to help her get through the aftermath. It's nice to see a woman stand up on her own two legs and fend off an attacker on her own, so extra house points for stepping out of the mold.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I'm so glad you picked up on the two things that were really important to me here--one, that Dolohiv would be fooled by her show of terror long enough to give her an advantage (and she'd be clever enough to try that feint), and two, that she'd be able to handle defending herself on her own. I didn't want Severus to ride in on a white horse (or a broomstick, for that matter!) and save the damsel in distress, especially when we have a brave, capable woman who can take care of herself, thank you very much! He'll be there soon enough. Thanks so much for reviewing!

thou art evil. i'm sad you killed off riley, tho i understand it. dolohov - makes more sense than a malfoy and is less obvious to boot. :)
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I am indeed evil (sometimes, anyway). Hated to see Riley go, but 'twas necessary. And I'm so glad that I don't seem have bothered anyone with the reveal of the mysterious man! So many guessed it was a Malfoy, but Dolohov had more reason to want them both dead, I think. Thanks so much for reviewing!

This was a lovely chapter! I really enjoyed the exchange between Hermione and Ron. Again, you've surprised me with your insights on canon. You are a very clever girl!
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Thank you! I think Ron sometimes gets the short end of the stick from us SSHGers--he's not a bad guy at all, and he can be a good friend, he's just not a match for our girl romantically. And that's the conversation I always think anybody should have when a new lover wants to know details about who came before: Shut up, and be happy I learned things you can benefit from! Thanks for reviewing!

Dolohov. I should have known! Though I thought it was a Malfoy. What a place to leave us hanging! Good thing the next chapter is in queue. Also, I just wanted to say that the second paragraph passage was so beautiful. You really captured the... complication of Severus' feelings, his self-loathing, his yearnings for salvation. You captured them in that second paragraph. Wonderful, simplistic, heart-felt. I loved it. "He wanted her to go away immediately. He wanted her to stay for the rest of her life. He was in awe of her. Awe. Yes, that was the word. He wondered at her. He feared her. He was amazed by her." Ah. She stays, yes?
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Oh, goodie, I'm glad the reveal made sense! I had so many people guessing it was a Malfoy that I started to be afraid you'd be disappointed when you found out who it really was!I do love that passage myself. I think we've all been there (if we're lucky, anyway--it's that feeling that's both unbearable and unbearably wonderful).Next chapter's in queue, and so I posted the one after that. You'll have to see what she does...and what he does! Thanks so very much for reading and reviewing!

Dolohov? Who would have thought?I swear I bit off another nail. This was a very capturing chapter. Looking forward to more, as usual! /M

So many people were thinking it was a Malfoy that I was terrified I'd let you all down! But he had to die, and I'd rather have her kill off a complete and utterly evil guy than one of the more ambiguous characters...and besides, I needed it to be someone who'd have a reason to want to go after Hermione almost as much as he would want to get Snape.I do fear for your fingers! But I'm glad you're finding it suspenseful--perhaps you should wear gloves for the next few chapters. There's more suspense coming!Thank you so much for reading and reviewing--your words mean a lot.-w

I usually don't complain about an evil cliffhanger, but this one is quite good... or bad,----any way I mean it's well written and suspenseful. Excellent job!-Wahoo

A really very, very well done chapter with lots of suspense, questions answered and questions asked... bravo!
Author's Response: Thank you so much! More of both still to come....
Alcina vom Steinsberg's response: But please don't let the suspense kill me before I have finished reading! *lol*
You're really a fast review-answerer, do you know? *curtseys* ;o)
Author's Response: I'm only fast if I happen to be online at the same time you are....
Don't die of suspense! I need yoy to tell me what you think of what's coming up!!

Let's hope her Gryfindor bravery and his Slytherin sense of self preservation will combine and he will take his memories back.

This just gets better and better! how clever to use the internet and search for news of an excellent chess player. and the idea that he may not recall WHY he killed Dumbledore is fantastic! And Harry's warning that someone else may be looking for Snape. (Of course we knew someone was watching Hermone, but who?!) This is such a cool story and this chapter is full of wondrfulness.
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Thank you! The internet is a fascinating search engine, especially when looking for a very particular sort of wizard.... I'm surprised that our mysterious watcher didn't think of it on his own, but then it's a very Muggle sort of thing to use, isn't it? I think you're going to like the next chapter even more, as thing sreally start rolling. Thanks for reading and reviewing--it's lovely to hear how you're reacting to the story!

somehow I never got back to this one after the first chapter. But I'm glad I decided to finish it now. it is really very good. I really like your addressing how Harry might have been effected by those memories, and how he grows up, changes his attitude about Snape..
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
I'm so glad you returned! I do think Harry would have thought a lot about how wrong he'd been about Severus. He might never have gotten to the point of actually liking him, but I believe he would have come to respect him deeply and maybe even to admire his courage and sacrifices.Glad to have you back reading and reviewing. Thanks!

now, that is awful, to think of him running around out there in the world without such important memories. oh, and i liked how hermione tracked him through the chess forums on the internet! but - more camping! please don't let it drag on interminably, for months and months, as it becomes clearer than ever that nobody has the least idea what to do. oh, sorry. i was having a bad flashback there. i'm sure that won't happen in YOUR story. ; )

First off I have a question: Who the heck is Romy?"
Now, with that out of the way, I love the way Hermione has combed the internet chat rooms dedicated to chess lovers and discovered hints that an accomplished "dark master" of the game had come on the scene about the time that would have coincided with Snape's apparent death. Admittedly almost none "of the online players had ever laid eyes on him, of course. Or put a name to him. Or could pick him out of a lineup." But the descriptions of this dark master's prowess sounded very much like the Potions Master to Hermione. She's as sharp as a tack, she is!I wonder if this "Romy" that Ron mentioned could have been Severus in disguise... perhaps a chess player that Ron had competed against? After all, Ron is a pretty good chess player himself. I know, I'm grasping at straws here, but I gotta try to put the pieces together as you give them to us.I had thought that the man who had observed Hermione when she visited Spinner's End, and who followed her when she left the Ministry that day, was Severus... he was described as pale, and he had thought "perhaps her involvement would prove educational in the long run." But if she and Harry are correct that Severus can't remember anything of the memories he gave to Harry, then perhaps he is laying low and has no intention of being found. If that is the case, then the man who observed Hermione at Snape's house, may have been someone other than Snape. Could it have been Draco? Or Lucius? They are both pale ... hummmmm... you are driving me crazy!I hope Hermione is successful in her search for Severus! I need for her to find him. And I hope she finds him before someone else (who may intend to harm him) finds him.
This story is quite the puzzle! I take my hat off to you! And I need for you to update as soon as possible. Beth
Response from Elise_Wanderer (Author of The Spirit That Remembers)
Oh, Beth, I do so love your speculations! And a couple of them are correct (at least partially). *evil laugh*Romy is indeed a puzzle, though not as complicated a one as you have considered--I actually wish I'd thought to add that angle! And that pale man...it'll be awhile before you find out exactly who that is, but I do think it will be worth the wait.I just love that this is raising so many questions with you. This kind of reaction is exactly what makes it so much fun to write and post such a story!Thank you so much for reading and reviewing--and keep on guessing as you go. It's so much fun to hear what you think!-Wendy
