Reviews for By Flash and Thunder Fire
OK. I have to say it. I love all of the Queen song references in your chapter titles. I always look there first to see which you have picked. I have an especially soft spot for Ogre Battle since when I played it for my Dad, he clapped his hands over his ears and looked wide-eyed horrified that such a sound could exist and that I had inflicted it upon him.I really like where you ended the story. I like letting my imagination decide whether Miranda gets away and how Snape and Hermione spend what future they have left. Our own mortality is such a shocker. Intellectually we know that we won't get out of this life alive, but when faced with that truth it is like "Hey, Wait. Aren't I owed more days than this?" Snape's response is right in line with that while still being in character: he's not going to take it lying down nor is he going to go screaming from the room nor is he going to curl up in a corner and cry nor (as you hinted) is he going to make his own horcrux. He is going to fight the good fight and put on his favorite music to share with the one he most hates to leave. That sounds like the perfect Snape mixture of pragmatism and rebellion.Thank you very much for a good story.

AT LAST, another Queen fan! I have been waiting for so long! I was even starting to wonder if the titles were ringing any bells for people at all. 'Ogre Battle' is one of my favourites too - don't you love the bit at the beginning where they open with the main flourish played backward? In fact, it was listening to Queen II that inspired this story in the first place, so I thought a little homage was only fitting, really. And thank you, as well, for the great review! I'm glad you found Snape's reaction to be so appropriate. It was kind of hard to write, seeing as, well, I don't exactly have personal experience to draw on there!
I hope you do go on to read my next fic - there will be a good smattering of Queen involved there too. :)
Response from mikimoto (Reviewer)
Now that is an idea. Stories based on Queen albums! Sheer Heart Attack and The Game would be interesting while A Night at the Opera could basically write itself (being such a dramatic record). But it is the vitriol in Death on Two Legs that makes it my favorite for sheer expressiveness. (http://www.lyrics007.com/Queen%20Lyrics/Death%20On%20Two%20Legs%20Lyrics.html) I have no doubt that with your imagination and story-crafting ability, you could take any of these and make something original and compelling (ie, not a songfic). I am looking forward to reading them. Thanks so much for writing.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Yes, that is a fantastic tune. I feel fortunate in never having met anyone whom I would use it to describe. :) Thanks for the confidence boost! I am expanding beyond Queen songs for titles in my next fic - it's going to be longer than this one - but if you like that era of music, you will definitely see stuff you recognise. Thank you so much for reviewing!
You were right. After reading Miranda's letter I went back to re-read the conversation with Miranda and Harry before I continued. Knowing the letter (even though I suspected she was setting up Snape the entire time), changed my perception of the conversation. Thanks for revealing what Antonio was about the mention about the spell. So, I guess that Snape doesn't have to worry about Miranda being preggers . . . . I loved the conversation between Harry and Snape. Nicely done.

Thank you so much! :)
Sad chapter, but if anyone can figure out what to do it's those two!
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Thank you!
Gah! See... I knew there was something about her. But I love that you gave us a reason why she acted the way she did. Antonio deserved to be stabbed with a letter opener, and he deserved much more. She should have stabbed his balls. I like that Severus has apologized, as has Hermione. You don't give us a rundown on how the next year will go, and the open-ending lets us decide for ourselves whether the couple has a stellar year to go out in style or if they solve the mystery and have many more years to come.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Ouch! I'm happy you liked the open ending; I was afraid it might not be satisfying enough! Thank you so much for all of your reviews. :)
I think I liked this ending. At any rate I came out liking Miranda, I think I will pretend that she will manage to hide her tracs real well and find a way to live the rest of her life with some joy. I don't think she should be punished for killing her husband, if anything she should have a medal for that. It was wrong to use Severus that way, but I also have to admit that I understand her reasons why, based on what she knew about him, and the easy target he made him self out to be. At any rate she made up for that, both of respect for Hermione, but also for her aknowlegding that he was not the man she thought him to be. I hope Hermione will manage to help Severus find a cure, and that they will live happily ever after. I have several times said that I would have liked both of them to have more honour (Severus) and backbone (both), but they are my favourite couple, so I am glad for them being together at the end:-))

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much for all of your reviews. :-D
So, this is it? I am glad Miranda explained herself, and that she did have some misgivings about her actions. She didn't turn out to be as amoral as I had thought. This has been a remarkable story, and I look forward to the next one.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Thank you so much! Your reviews have been some of my favourites throughout the whole thing. :)
So, Miranda acted out of revenge for her failed life. Hermione will need a lot of patience if she intends to carry on a relationship with Severus. The man has so many issues, his health notwithstanding.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Pretty predictable, eh?
Oh. Oh, dear... Well, if anyone can help him, Hermione can. I'd like to think that it'll all work out. Is the next story a sequel, perhaps?
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
I like to think that too. The next story will not be a sequel - it's going to be something completely different. :)
Well, that was a shocker--I certainly didn't see that coming! Good suspense and now a mystery to solve. I have lots of suspicions, but no clear idea whodunnit!
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Thank you! Sorry for the long delay in responding...very negligent of me. Forgiven?

Now, that's what I call a real surprise. So, Miranda was happy to hear the threats in the Infirmary because she could frame Snape more easily and get rid of Silva? What about Hermione? Lesbian interest? I wonder who's ill. Do write on, please.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
No, not lesbian interest. ;) Miranda's interest in Hermione is more subtle and complicated than personal attraction, although that would certainly make the whole Miranda/Severus/Hermione thing a true love triangle... Thanks for the review!
Why do I suspect this is all Miranda's doing?
I also wonder if she didn't want people to understand the healer-uses for the Enhancement Charm because she doesn't want anyone to notice what she's done to Snape.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
You suspect her because she's suspicious - perfectly natural. What makes you think she's done anything to Snape? ;) Thanks for reviewing!
Although Severus woke up and made a fresh start, he never indicated to Miranda that they were 'through'--she was simply gone in the morning. My point is, it has only been one day since he formed his resolution and while he is sure that he is done with Miranda, is she 'done' with him? Somehow I doubt it. She exhibits great tenacity in getting her way. Now that her husband is in the picture, it is a perfect set-up for her to use the two men against one another. That would be a potentially explosive situation...Can't wait to see what happens next! Thanks for the update.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Thanks for the review! Hope you found your way to the next chapter okay. :)
Oh my - this just gets more intense. And poor Severus - why doesn't Hermione trust him?
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
I refer you to ch. 5, 'Loser in the End,' for the answer to that question. :) Thanks for the review!
Grrrrr that treacherous, traitorous bitch! That's why she brought her husband to Hogwarts, wasn't it? To stage a way to murder him and let Severus take the blame. "Reformed" Death Eater, so-called "murderer" of Dumbledore, no one would contradict the accusation, and apparently, not even Hermione! Gaaaaaaaah. Update soon, please!
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Whoa, venom! I like it. :) Working on the next chapter even now. Thanks for the review!
The shit hath hitteth the fanneth. Now I have Questions That I Want Answered in a Timely Fashion ("Timely" meaning "As Soon As The Author Sees Fit, But If It's Within the Next Few Chappies, It Will Earn Them Cookies :)"):
1. Was that the REAL Señor Silva?
2. If so, was he acting like a Nice Guy, just as Miranda seems to be acting?
3. Who's the killer? Silva had a "peaceful" look on his face, so it must have been someone he knew (unless he committed suicide?). That, or he was resigned to dying.
4.The knife is pretty incriminating, but do they honestly think Severus would be so stupid as to use his OWN knife to kill someone? Plus, a knife is so Muggle...why would the killer use a knife? Unless they AK'd him and THEN stuck the knife in him to make it LOOK like he got stabbed?
5. Miranda seems pretty upset...was she lying about leaving Silva? If so, why?
Hmmmm...I am anxiously awaiting the update!
Response from Sporky1126 (Reviewer)
P.S.Sorry about the crazy massive spacing. I don't know what is up with my computer.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
1. Yes, that was the real Antonio Silva.2. No, he was not acting - that's just how he is, man.
3. Um...not answering this one. ;)
4. Well, we know the murderer couldn't use a wand, 'cause (from GoF) there are ways of determining what spells have been cast recently with any particular wand. So why not a knife? Gets the job done quick, and better than poison (the coward's weapon).
5. Miranda was definitely in the grip of genuine emotion. And no, she wasn't lying about having left Silva.
See, questions answered, and you didn't even have to wait for the next chapter! Send the cookies to Wadham College, Oxford, OX1 3PN, UK. I'll be awaiting them eagerly. ;)
Response from Sporky1126 (Reviewer)
I guess I'm more of a conspiracy theorist than I thought! LOL. *scuffs toe along floor* Um...I don't have an oven...will cyber-cookies do? Unless there are some kind of cookie that is only available in America that you've been dying to try. Then I could perhaps send you a box.
OH MY!!!!!! This story is fantastic and it just keeps twisting and I...can't even write a review because my mind is running at like 1,000 mph! I'm just going to leave it at OH MY!!!!!!!!!! with a whole bunch of !!!!!!!!!!!
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Thank you!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
Oh, man..... Things have just gotten a lot worse, haven't they? *groaning* I really want to know what's up with Miranda now (right after I figure out how she got Snape's knife and killed her husband). I doubt if Flitwick will ever hire another foreign teacher again, not after this mess!
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Poor Flitwick - he's not been in the loop, can you imagine the shock? :)I see you want Miranda to be the murderer. Can't imagine why... *grin* Thank you so much for the review!
I can't figure Miranda out. She just doesn't add up to me. I guess that is what makes this a good story. I look forward to updates!
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
I'll be updating again soon. Thanks for the compliment, and the review! :)
So glad to see an update on this! Very good story. I was hoping that Miranda's friendship for Hermione was genuine, but I am having doubts now.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Thank you so much! Next update will be soon.
Oh, she scares me.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
But scary can be good, right? :)
I'm surprised that Severus would take a potion from Miranda
without, at least, sniffing it first! Then after her comment about poison, the
only thing he questioned, metaphorically, was to look askance at the vial... where's our Potions Master that trusts no one?
I also find it a little surprising that Severus hasn’t considered
that the Lassi requiescamus, as
a compulsive curse, might be responsible for his illness since he apparently
hadn’t seen Miranda for a few days. Following her comment at the end of the
chapter about him not being contagious, I’d think he would see it as a
possibility.
Is Severus so
accustomed to being used by Albus and Riddle that he would accept being used by
Miranda, too? His admitting to HG that he’s always been aware of Miranda’s lack
of emotional investment in their ‘relationship’, certainly didn’t win any
points with Hermione! That probably pointed out to her that he wouldn’t have
been interested in a true relationship with her either, since he doesn’t seem
to care. So, IS the sex all he’s interested in? Where’s that ‘right vs.
easy’ business come in with that?
Hmmm, is Miranda simply looking for him to sire a child on
her? A child that could be passed off as her husband’s and used as a constant
point of revenge against him? (I’ve not seen any contraceptive potions or spells
being used yet.) Or are all her actions simply based on, ‘because she can’,
with no actual reasoning behind them?
Curious twists and turns to be puzzled out lead to
long-winded comments! ♥
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Such incredible levels of suspicion! And of course, Snape is suspicious too, so you might see some of these things coming up in future. However, I must defend Severus and say that he is not just interested in sex - at the moment, he's between a rock and a hard place, but that's not going to last much longer! Props to you for spotting the lack of contraception - that will come up later, but perhaps not in the way you think. Long winded comments deserve long winded responses, but I can't say too much without giving the whole damn thing away! I shall just conclude by saying, thank you so much for the review! As always, you are hugely observant. :)

"...but perhaps not the way you think"? I just pray that it's not the way I'm actually thinking!

Boy, this story is a real trigger for me. I have had both this version of Severus and a Miranda in my life and it brings a lot of emotion back that I hoped that I would not feel again. That isn't your fault, understand, I have the chioce to read or not to read, I am telling you this to let you know how good your writing is with your ability to make the reader feel what your story wants them to feel.
Just one question...will this ever be a HG/SS story? or will it be SS/OC? If it works out to be SS/HG I will try to stick with it. It's a great story.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Well, better to have a reaction, I suppose, than to be bored to tears. :) This will definitely be a SS/HG story, have patience. I would not have filed it under that category otherwise. As you will see in the next chapter... Thank you for the review!

Severus is truely an ass. But Miranda is right--guilt is not catching... She's in no danger since she has no conscience.
Excellent dramma.
Response from julymorning (Author of By Flash and Thunder Fire)
Nicely put! She has a conscience, but a very selective one indeed, as we shall see later. Thank you so much for reviewing!
