Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
I don't like it when you make me cry. I cried twice in this chapter. Oh, the pain these two are going through. I can't help but feel like my heart is breaking for them. What troopers, what fighters they are. Knowing the end will be the end of them (unless you choose otherwise... hint... hint ...wink... wink...) and yet they go on.... Awe....
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm so sorry that I made you cry. Though I know what you mean. It makes me cry, too, how brave they are. You know what's been at the top of my mind lately? I think it's Lupin's line, at the end of the Potterwatch scene from DH: Keep each other safe; keep faith. That always makes me cry. They were so very brave.
::wibble::
And this chapter brings us nearer to the end, which I hope for goodness sake you're going to salvage....
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Well, nearer to the end of DH, anyway. It's simply shocking to me that I'm only 3 chapters from the Shrieking Shack. 3 chapters. Dear God. I know you know what I mean when I say how strange it is to be writing the chapters you'd planned for six months ago. Speaking of which, I hope things are going well. We can freak out together, if you like. :) Thank you for reviewing! xoxox
This is heart-wrenching. One must cheer them on. They have more on their plates in Second Life than in DH. But unlike the DH, there is hope here. Hope that I cling to and cherish and wish for them to realise. Your selection of Severus's memories for Harry was spot on. I'm happy you chose to have him show Harry that there is another woman in his life that has done much more than some Lily Evans ever even thought about.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, Nata. I agree that they bear more in SL than they did in DH, but I hope that their love is a mitigating factor--that they are also stronger than they were in DH for having each other. I'm so glad that you liked Severus's memories.Thank you so much for reviewing!
Beautiful as always, my dear, but you leave me on tender hooks. Irish
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, Irish. xoxo
That chapter was heart-rending. They have such a close bond, and now willingly march into the fray to risk all, for the sake of their world. The worst bit is that no-one will know just what they both risk!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. I think the bond between them is both the thing that would be hardest to risk, and the thing that gives them the strength to risk it all.Thank you for reading and reviewing!
Beautifully done. I like that he chooses the memories, for Harry as much as for Hermione, that he thinks about what he wants to give them both, that he keeps back things that might make it harder for Harry to do what he must. And his going to Hermione to look out into eternity with her-- very well done indeed.

Thank you so much,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. That means a lot to me. I'm so glad you liked it.
So beautiful, Lariope. You stepped into the middle of the morass that is Severus & Lily and you held your head up and you pushed through to the end, fondling every painful detail, illuminating every unlovely facet of the boy who failed to grow into his nose. Then you showed his evolution to the bravest man I've ever known, and you wove Hermione into that story, and you made it good and right and complete. You did in this one chapter what I have been too much a coward to do in the time since the publication of DH.I find comfort and agony and completion in your story, Lariope. It paints my soul with hope.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
*hugs you very tightly*Thank you,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. I hope you know how much that means to me.You took my words and made them more beautiful. I don't think I'll ever think of him without fondly knowing that he is the boy who failed to grow into his nose.
Well, if there was a sixth star, I'd tack it on :)I found myself making notes as I read this, because there were so many "A-ha" moments. Your ability to recall and revisit past details of your own narrative, as well as canon, makes this such a pleasure to read! Even when you're including some things that are hard to hear, like the injured children in the Room of Requirement. Snape has let them down, and while it's unfair that he has to do everything, if not him, then who? With the Pensieve memories: I love, LOVE your interpretations. It was easy to hate Lily after finishing DH, but there always was the fact that she couldn't and didn't make Snape join Voldemort. It all makes emotional sense the way you cast it here. And when he recalls Hermione and the marriage, it's amazing to recall that biting dialogue in the light of everything else. The line "Things said aloud are harder to hide" ends up summing it all up about Snape and his capacity for hidden love, I think. And as for Potter and Snape facing each other after the memories are revealed...oh, I hope so! Beautiful work.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
If not him, then who? Yes, exactly. But it makes me very sad for him. I'm so glad you liked this one,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. Your review just warms me through and through. I'm so happy that you felt there was emotional sense in Snape's progression through his life, and glad you agree with me that Lily didn't make him do it, that his grief was in his own mistakes as well as what he did to her. Thank you so much. xoxo
This is such a beautiful chapter. I believe 'quiet pain' sums it up nicely. And the ending is exquisite, like so many sentences in here. I could quote you all day, I feel. :-)I realised what it is that bothers me about Voldemort's voice as well! In my head, in this section, he sounds like a French spy in a movie I saw once. I hear him speaking with a lisp and a French accent. LOL! It's funny how the mind works sometimes... But, so, yes, I'm pretty sure that's just me. :-) Carry on!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
!And I'm giggling over FrenchSpy!Voldy. I read the first section to my husband several times and I finally decided that I liked him as he was--but now that I hear your reading of him, I get it!
There was a beauty and sadness to this chapter. I'm glad I could start my day with this. Snape picking out his memories carefully... it makes sense that the memories he gave Harry in DH had been thought of in advance. I always wondered about that, but JKR couldn't tell us about that because it's Snape's POV. Then the loveliness of him coming to see her and sitting beside the ocean. Sigh. Something of the calm before the storm. I know in one review you said you hate to write the action chapters. I suppose you are taking a deep breath as you get ready to plunge into the climactic chapters of your story. I can't wait to read them! I hope you enjoy writing them.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, and I'm glad that you were glad to start your day with it, as I think it would have depressed me. ;)The next several will be action packed, yes. But the end of DH is not quite the end of SL, and so the flavour will change again slightly before we're done. Though I do not look forward to Gringotts, I do happily anticipate Hogwarts. Most of my favorite parts of DH were in those chapters, though I won't get to tell any of them because I don't have access to Harry's POV. Thank you for reviewing! More soon. xoxo
I think that the camping scene was necessary to show the monotony of their current position.Great horcrux scene with Hermione.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, are you a camping hater, too? :) I tried to keep the camping to a minimum! I'm glad you survived it. Thank you!
Brilliant, wonderful and seriously the best SS/HG story I've read. Thank you so much for the obvious time and thought you put to into this work. LOVED LOVED it!
This story is fantastic. The parallel story line you've merged with the original book is so well done. Brilliant! (the lemons aren't bad either heh heh)
Wow, this first chapter totally hooked me. Very well written and you got Snape and Dumbledore on point. Well done!
That was absolutely beautiful.
"It felt like being Snivellus again."
Awwww. His loneliness hangs so thickly in the air, I can feel it from here. =(
Favorite parts of this chapter:"I will come." <---squee! I hoped so!"For all your wisdom, Dumbledore, there is one thing you have never understood. Humans are not chess pieces, no matter how well you think you understand them. They will never do exactly what you think they should." <---amen, brother. " 'I can see you thinking,' Dumbledore said. 'Stop now, before it is too late.' " <---this just made me laugh.I had nothing constructive to say here, I guess, except that it feels like something is about to happen that is not camping lol.
Response from kallonista (Reviewer)
I also want you to know that your line about humans not being chess pieces gave me some food for thought while writing a final paper for a political theory class I took this semester. Thanks for helping ME put a dent in some serious writer's block of my own.
Thank you for making the camping somewhat interesting =). At least it gives us the opportunity to hear Hermione's thoughts, out in the great wide tedium. I also liked seeing the effects of prolonged Horcrux wearing, although I don't understand why JKR would have them wear a cursed necklace in shifts instead of just carrying it in the bag, especially when just touching the necklace had sent Katie Bell into a cursed coma. But that is commentary for DH, which you did not write the first time and therefore can only do what you can with what you are given. I had kind of hoped also that Snape would contact Hermione sometime that day, but the day is not over, therefore I should just read the next chapter already!
Aw this chapter was so beautifully written. Honestly, it made my heart ache.Amazing. I love it so much.

I'm so glad that you liked it! Thank you so much.
Hi!I joined this site because of your story. It's fabulous!I love your Hermione! She's smart and kind and has other things on her mind than constant sex with Snape.Great job!
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh my goodness, what a lovely thing to say! Well, I'm so glad that you joined the site--this a wonderful archive, my absolute favorite. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!
Hello! I'm a newcomer to what looks like your list of adoring fans, hehe :D I have to say I found this story very recently, and I instantly fell in love with it. I'm sure you've heard it all before, but I'll put my two cents in anyways ;) First of all, I can't even begin to describe the emotions your story has provoked in me. Your writing is truly beautiful and something to behold. I must say as well, I think it's helped me out of my somewhat paralyzing 'slump'. It's made me feel less apathetic and more alive...if that makes sense. I thank you for that! You've certianly taken everything I love about Severus and Hermione and displayed them perfectly. I also love how you effortlessly weave the story into canon, every little detail! I find that absolutely clever :) I really don't know what else to say that hasn't been said already, and I'm beginning to feel like I'm rambling...I'll continue to look forward to what the next chapter brings!

, I'm really touched by your comments. I'm so glad you're reading SL and so happy that the story has been useful to you personally. And I'm so pleased that my Severus and Hermione work for you. Thank you so much for leaving me a review! I hope that the story lives up to your expectations and that you continue to enjoy it. xoxoxox
asdfghjkl;!!!!*flail*(why didn't he ask about Ron?)BRILLIANT CHAPTER
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thanks! Why didn't he ask why Ron had left? Well, I suppose he has sufficient disdain for Ron to assume he just chickened out. That, and they didn't leave themselves much time to talk about anything but Horcruxes. But I'm glad you liked it! Thanks for reviewing!
So slow! So romantic!I absolutely love how everything fits into canon so nicely! There is so much darkness yet so much hope in this story! This is partly why I love it so much.Kisses
