Hermione is forced to lead a double life when she agrees to Dumbledore's plan to protect Professor Snape. Inspired by the Marriage Law. Warning for student/teacher relationship, though Hermione is of age.

Reviews for Second Life
Well, lets see.....
First I wanted to thwak Dumbledore upside the canvas:
Snape bristled. "Which job are you criticizing, Albus? My obligations to the Dark Lord or my obligations to you?""Both." said Dumbledore.
Then I thought, "I know just how Hermione feels about a good, hot shower!"
Then I felt hope because Ollivander is going to make Hermione, Harry and Ron new wands specifically crafted for them as they are today, for the trials they will soon face.
I love the way you told how Severus chose which memories to commit to the Pensieve. There were so many! Each with a purpose -- to let someone know that they had been loved, or protected, or to request an understanding, an absolution, an admission that, perhaps, Snape had been able to redeem himself. The following passage brought tears to my eyes: "Hermione. He wanted Potter to see what she had undertaken, how pure that bravery was right from the very beginning. He wanted him to know how she had hesitated when Dumbledore had asked her to keep a secret from him, wanted Potter to hear her say that if she had known the marriage was to save him, and not Snape as she had been told, that she would have done it anyway. If only there was some way to tell her that he would do it all again, that he would take back his arguments and his barbs. If only he could take her hands and marry her properly, tell her that there was no other partner… that there had never been anything like her."
And this one brought the tears down my face: "It was the only goodbye he knew how to give her."
Your writing is magical. You don't beat your readers over the head with superfluous words for words' sake. You tell an amazing story -- following canon where it takes you, and then weaving your own beautiful tale around it and through it like honeysuckle through the fence.
I wish I could write so well.

Thank you so much, Beth. I'm very honored by your praise! I'm glad you liked this chapter, that you found much to connect with in it, and most particularly, I'm glad you liked Snape's memories. The image of the honeysuckle is one I'm going to treasure. Thank you.
Words fail me. Severus and Hermione are both so stoic. The scene where Severus is putting together the memories is wrenching. Thank you.

!! I agree that Hermione and Severus are about as brave as two people can be. I hope it is partly their love, in addition to their characters, that makes them thus. Thank you so much for reviewing. xoxo
Another beautiful and poignant chapter. You have created a moving love story that goes way beyond HBP and DH.
It was really nice (and heartwrenching) to see Snape carefully select which memories to give Harry. The imagery in your last paragraph was so powerful, I can still picture them sitting there by the ocean. Pure poetry!Beautiful writing my friend!

. Your support means the world to me. I'm glad you liked that final image. It's hard to bring them together and not even let them speak, but I know they took the comfort and strength that they needed from each other's simple presence that night. Thank you for reviewing! xoxox
You let Severus have time with Hermione! I'm so glad he had time to renew his spirit with her, and heal her, and gain a new appreciation for Luna.
You have done a wonderful job of portraying Luna -- there, and yet, not there. She "sees" the things that others miss. I've always liked her character.
The way you managed to get the idea of "someone helping" them into Harry's mind was just brilliant! Now perhaps Harry will be more open to "things" that Hermione will suggest in the future -- that's gotta be in there somewhere, right?
And a BIG thank you for giving Severus a reason to go on living. 100 points to You!!! I LOVE THIS STORY!!! I'm sorry for Dobby's loss, but he would have done anything for Harry and Hermione. I am glad that the Malfoy's and Bellatrix were bested, and I hope the Dark Lord takes it out of their hides! It's no more than they deserve!!! This was a busy chapter, wasn't it? Now on to chapter 36.

I feel like a bad jailer, who only lets Severus out occasionally. Hehehehe. No wait, that's Dumbledore.Yes, I was terribly glad to give them some time together, too, and I'm glad you liked it. And so happy that you liked my Luna. She is one of my very favorite characters. And, you're right, wouldn't it have been nice in canon if Old Voldy had just killed the Malfoys and Bellatrix for letting Harry escape?Thank you so much, Beth. xoxo
This is so tragic. I'm hoping you don't make him die, because I know I'll be crying for a while after that.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm not trying to break your heart, I swear! I sort of find it hopeful, that Snape could look at his life and find beauty in it, find something worth loving in it, though I agree that it is very sad that he is so determined to face down the end. Thank you so much for reviewing!
Very sad and i could feel my heart break for them. Wonderful chapter but you have me on the verge of tears. I really want a happy ending eventually but you write angst so well i don't mind crying abit more. many thanks x
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I am sorry for the tears, my dear portugal faro, but I'm glad you could feel everything along with them. A bit of adventure is on the way to drive the angst from the tops of their minds....Thank you so much. xoxo
So heartbreaking and beautiful. I especially loved the last scene by the sea and the quiet comfort they find in being together. And now I'm desperately clinging to the hope that your story will have a different outcome than DH.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you, Dreamy Dragon. I'm so glad you liked it, particularly the end. The image of her head resting on his invisible shoulder... It just moved me, and I'm glad it was like that for you too.
He is so sure that she cannot understand, even though he has had evidence to the contrary. I think, as he did after the end of their first encounter, that he may reevaluate things, and I hope she will hear the desperate loneliness and isolation that makes him want to drive her away. She is truly courageous...and Albus is as manipulative as ever in palming him off on her.
Thank heaven they are both better people than he may give them credit for. Though I do fear for them both!
Oh, dear god, he makes me weep. You have so expertly caught the sense he must have of unworthiness, and I adore the very gradual alteration in their analyses of one another.
And he is able to offer excellent relationship advice, as well, which she is practical enough to take!
I am enjoying this even more this time around, especially as I recall some of the highlights to come but cannot for the life of me remember how you managed to get them together again physically, and I am so looking forward to finding out all over again!
"That’s what glory smells like." Oh, indeed, it is!
You have set up this incredible tightrope walk so expertly! Have I mentioned lately what an incrediblke writer you are? Yiou've put us right there--and what a fascinating place it is!
Having created a Severus who actually cares about the rightness of the situation and about not being forced to commit rape, you have set him up to be a magnificent teacher of one of the finest students Hogwarts has ever known.
What magnificent private lessons! I see there is a very long line of pupils waiting. I'll just stand over here, shall I?
I'm not sure that anyone has ever done a better job of showing the manipulative skill of Albus Dumbledore than you have here. He surely must have been a Slytherin--he's an absolute expert at manuvering people into a corner of his own devising. I don't recall now if this was the first piece I ever read that made me realize just how devious a character he really is but it is certainly the very best at showing that talent in action! Of course they both agreed in the end, but they had no choice at that point, did they?
And I am struck again by the fact that Severus is the one most concerned with the ethics of the situation. Even Hermione, who does seem to understand and acknowledge them as well, is willing to set them aside for the greater good. (Should that be capitalized? The Great Good is generally an evil force indeed!)
In preparation for the trip to Azkaban, I'm back again for another dose of what is still one of my two or three All-Time Favorites---and you still get top marks both for cleverness and for expert writing.
I will be forever in awe of your ability to take established canon and weave an entirely new, wonderfully rich story right into its very fabric, making it look as though it had been there from the beginning. Brilliant. I'm already loving this as much as I did when I read it the first time.
(p.s. "Dark Santiago" is pretty incredible, too!)
My God! What a heart stopping cliff hanger to end on!My blood pressure has gone off the scale, my heart is in my throat, and I am speechless! Great writing, Lariope!!!!!!!!! Now I have to read chapter 35 -- QUICKLY.Beth
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, no! Must not kill Beth! Thank you, my dear. :)
What a beautiful and heartbreaking chapter.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you very much!
Lariope,Throughout the story you have articulated emotions and thoughts so clearly, beautifully and economically. The last is rather a discordant word, I suppose -- but couldn't think of a better way to say that you don't spill endless words expressing the characters' emotions and thoughts. This is why your reflective chapters are powerful and not the seas of sentimentality and angst they could be given the subject matter. In this chapter, Severus' state of mind while he removes the memories, as he ponders the children in the RoR, and Hermione's thoughts as they look at the sea stand out in that respect. As for plot, I too, wondered how S managed to pull out just the right memories while dying, so thanks for clearing that up. Having H and S sit side by side contemplating eternity together was a good choice -- much more moving than sex or talk. Your attention to detail, e.g. giving them all new wands, commenting on Bill's state of mind (afraid! very interesting), is very satisfying. That's what makes the story seem so very real, in addition to the depth of the main characters. As always, I loved having Sev's POV and hearing his story. And for you and Subversa, that's The-Boy-Who-Failed-To-Grow-Into-His-Nose, if you please. Please capitalize and punctuate correctly.RedRoo
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
RedRoo,Do forgive my poor capitalization and punctuation. lol! That made my evening.I'm happy that you find my writing economical--I don't want to back and forth endlessly over the page, and I think that's tempting when you're dealing with someone's inner life. And I couldn't be more pleased that you liked the ending. It's hard to go for what feels right and true when you know how limited the time your characters have spent together has been.Thank you so much, as always, for such a wonderful review.Lariope
"To the sea, their wars and struggles were but a single moment in the endless procession of time."I think this is my favorite line in this chapter. It's so true that humans are such a small part of this world. It's also true that we can kill our world past its ability to survive. Another great chapter. I can feel the tension winding up, ready to release.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
. I'm really glad you liked that part. I think being immersed relentlessly into anyone's POV (particularly our own) makes it hard sometimes to see the big picture.I'm glad the story has tension right now. Thank you so much for reviewing!
Omfg! This is awesome just so tantalizingly close to the end! Ooher I can't for all to be revealed! This is an awesome fic n ur and awesome author keep it up! Waiting impatiently -Lio-
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Lio, it is very close to the end of DH, but not yet close to the end of SL... but yes, much action and quickly paced (I hope!) things to come. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!
He felt as if he were slicing away parts of himself. But maybe that was right. Maybe he was cutting away dead tissue, parts of his heart that had been starved for blood for longer than Harry Potter had been alive. Gah! Interesting analogy for his pain. He's cutting away the old, but there will be more room for the new now. Like a plant that's been pruned--it always blooms back fuller than before. This was a beautiful chapter, full of Severus's memories--memories that while we know of them, we get to see them through his perspective, and it's always nice to get more of Sev's perspective on things. He's so full of misery and love I just want to squeeze him.I'm all psyched up now for the whirlwind to come--thanks for giving us a chapter where we can breathe a little and just revel in your lovely writing before the shit hits the fan.Oh and nice touch having Ollivander make custom wands for all of them! That gave me a happy. :-)
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you,
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
!I'm glad that you saw it as a moment to breath before the action of the next chatpers. And I liked your plant analogy; it's true, though I am a terrible pruner in real life. :)I'm very happy that you bought the wands part. In DH, Ollivander makes a wand just for Luna, which I always loved--so I thought, why not. More soon. xoxo
My blubbering pregnant hormones can't write a proper review right at this moment, my dear. But you'll have to take my tears to mean that I loved this heartwrenching chapter very much...
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I am so sorry to have wreaked havoc upon pregnant hormones!! *hugs and dries tears*I'm so glad you liked it, Faeriebell. Thank you so much. xoxo
I'm glad he came to her - that was really sweet. And although I don't fully understand how Hermione and Harry are each going to see the memories Snape left without Harry seeing those more private memories deemed solely for Hermione, I thought that whole passage was very touching.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Oh, I didn't mean that Harry wouldn't see them. I think he very much wanted Harry to see them--both because he is determined (in much the way I think that Hermione is determined to exonerate him) to prove to Harry (I just typed Potter, as if I were Snape!) what Hermione had sacrificed for him, and because I think there's a part of him that wants Harry to understand what he himself and Hermione understand--that it started as a plan, and became something else entirely. I think in some unarticulated way, he wants Harry to know that Hermione loves him, because I think to him, that's almost as vindicating as the good he did. And then, of course, they're there to say goodbye to Hermione, too. To reassure her that he loved her in the face of his death. Anyway, I'm sorry that was unclear. Thank you so much for reviewing!
Wow. yet another powerful chapter. i actually just reread the entire story and am again in complete awe of how amazing this fic is. your characters are so accurate and you write so beautifully. this is definitely on of the best out there. i am getting so nervous about whether or not snape will survive. oh please please please a happy ending, i mean JKR gave us a 'happy' ending (epilogue) for DH so i hope it follows that you will give a sshg style happy ending. in any case i love that you decided to include memories about hermione for harry. i hope the fact that you are having him take them out now means that you will have the nagini scene either end differently or not at all. when severus is saying that the memory of the two of them is all the goodbye he can give her i almost started crying. so beautiful.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much, Annabelle. I'm amazed that you reread the whole thing--it's getting so long! I know that nerves are running high about the ending. I don't want to say too much about it yet, but I will say that as a Snape fan, the ending of DH was not a happy one for me. I'm happy that you liked the Pensieve scene, despite the fact that it is a painful one. Thank you very much for reviewing!
Heartbreaking but beautifully written.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
Thank you so much!
Another heavy one here. Very nicely done! How many more chapters do you anticipate to wrap it all up?
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I know--there's been a big string of those lately. And now we'll do a bunch of high adventure. My current outlines say about 9 more. Now, that doesn't mean that it won't be slightly longer or slightly shorter--I had anticipated one Shell Cottage chapter and ended up with two, and I have three slated for Hogwarts and it may not take quite that many, but 9 is my current estimate. I hope you'll stick with me! Thanks for reviewing :)
Oh man, big tears. God I hope he is over Lily and no longer has a doe Patronus. He is certainly a man preparing for his own funeral.
Response from Lariope (Author of Second Life)
I'm sorry for the tears, but very glad you could identify with his emotions in this chapter. There's been so much concern over time about the Patronus, and I had hoped to clear some of that up in this chapter. My vision of the Patronus is that it is not a symbol of his continuing love for Lily, though I think he will always love her, but a symbol of his commitment to her memory, to trying to make up for what he did. I don't think that interferes with his feelings for Hermione. I can't say when or if his Patronus will ever change again, but if they change (as I suspect they do) around a life-altering event, he's certainly got a lot of life-altering events ahead of him. ;)Thank you so much for reviewing!
