In the sequel to this stoy can we please have HG setting up a wizarding social services? I am appalled at AD's behavior. In fact worse than appalled. I need a new word. Grrrrrrr
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
LOL, that is a great idea!! If there is a sequel to this story, I will definitely keep that in mind, thank you!

Poor Sev. Oh I say, can I borrow albie for a second there? oh thank you. ~sends back a rent apart portrait and smiles winningly~ there! all better!please write more, please. i am eager to hear more of this dark tale.

LOL! Thank you so much for the review! I didn't set out to portray Dumbledore in this light, and I feel slightly (but only just barely) guilty for it... but I could think of no other way to write this tale without Dumbledore's duplicitous role. Please forgive me?
Response from keske (Reviewer)

Even though I would like another update immediately, if not sooner, I can tell by the sensitivity you demonstrate in the telling that you put a tremendous amount of care into your work and work into your care. What you have done so far wrings my heartstrings nearly to the breaking point. I would much rather have to wait a while and let you get it right. So take as long as you must. I'll be waiting.Love it!

Thank you so, so very much. I just love your reviews and I can't thank you enough for them! I did start on the next chapter, but ...I didn't quite start on the exchange story so I have to put "Conversations" on the backburner for a bit longer, I'm afraid. But I will do my best to get it out there in a somewhat timely manner! *hugs*

I'm intrigued by Pansy - the glimpses we've seen so far. And I do wonder where Severus will go, and how it will work out. Good luck with the Exchange fic! I'll be looking forward to reading it.
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
Thank you so very much! The exchange fic is still frustrating me, but hopefully just a bit closer to being done. Apparently I find it difficult to *not* write a dark tale. *grumbles* Oh, and to write a short story. That apparently is just another of my weaknesses! LOL. Pansy's actions will be explained soon, I promise! Thank you again!

Excruciatingly painful to read, I am taliking about this chapter and the previous one (which I didn't leave a review for,*bows head in shame.*) Minerva's narrative about Severus is dead on and so very sad. Severus is to Dumbledore as the monster was to Dr. Frankenstein, created for the "greater good," Ha! A very dark side of me is very glad to see that Minerva and Remus are so ashamed at their contribution to Severus condition. Now what are they going to do about it? Maybe it's to late; Severus seems to be hanging on by a tether and doesn't have a loving family to anchor him as Remus does. And as for Pansy, I wonder if all the Slytherin's are one step away from insanity? I will admit I need to go back and reread as I have lost track of the story line. I hope you will update soon, this is so finely written.
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
Thank you so much for the review, and please don't be ashamed about not writing one for the last chapter. I'm just thrilled you wrote one at all! I don't want readers to feel pressured to leave reviews, though I do enjoy them immensely! Just knowing that you are reading it is enough :) When you drop a line to say you enjoy it, that's just the icing on the cake! This story is difficult to write, and I completely understand how painful it must be to read. Thank you for sticking with it so far, and I promise there will be light at the end of the tunnel! It's never quite too late to help Severus, and RL, MM, and HG will all make an outstanding effort to do so as the story moves on. As for Pansy, her behavior will be explained soon, I promise you! And she'll be all right :)And, lastly — LOL, don't go back and read in an attempt to pick up the story line. I'm afraid you might find that there isn't one *blush*

I think all the regret is what made this chapter seem so real. Nice job.

Take all the time you need my dearest. I shall still be here eagerly awaiting your updates when you feel free to give them.
I do wonder where Severus will go? Surely you don't mean for Minerva to send him out on his own in such a self-destructing state of mind... Perhaps she will see fit to send Hermione with him ;)
Loves this story as you seem to pull no punches, and for that I am eternally grateful.
Loves you, Sonia :)

poor Pansy! about time that Hermione noticed Pansy's condition. I'm proud of Pansy for writing and working - for wanting to make her own way rather than relying on Malfoy money. thanks for the new chapter, and good luck on your Exchange fic!

Wow, I just read all of the chapters you have and this is good. It's so late here that I can't even leave a coherent review. This story is really an emotional roller coaster. Good luck with your exchange fic (I'm stuck on mine, hopefully yours is going better). I can't wait for another update. How long are you planning this story to be?
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
Thank you so, so very much! I am still stuck on my exchange fic as well. As for how long the story will be, I can't say for sure. There is a lot left to explore, so I'd say well over 20 chapters, definitely. After that, I can't really say, as I don't really know yet. Sorry!

. . . Does Severus have DID?
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
Oh, I love that you asked this. While he does have dissociative episodes, I don't believe he could truly be considered DID. He doesn't quite miss large blocks of time, and the facets of his personality are all intregrated. Off the top of my head, I think he suffers from PTSD, possibly BPD, and definitely a dissociate disorder, though not quite as extreme as DID. Thank you for the wonderful question!
Response from cmwinters (Reviewer)
Oh yeah, he's a *TEXTBOOK* case of PTSD if I ever saw one.Er . . . I'm not sure about (canon) Severus having BPD (assuming you mean "borderline" and not "bipolar") — he has entirely *too much* impulse-control for that. (Except when he's talking to children, at which point he's pretty consistently vicious. *cough*)But I don't think someone with BPD could defy the Dark Lord to his face, consistently, on command, for decades. And I can't see him being bipolar because . . . quite frankly, I can't see him being *manic*.You've got me wondering about what's in that bottle. I have varyingly alighted on Draught of Living Death (to put him in a permanent state of suspended animation, theoretically until he died), poison (to kill him), some sort of narcotic (to knock him out), some sort of entheogen, some sort of something to make him high/happy (which may or may not be one of the two preceeding), alcohol, Polyjuice and/or a memory.I don't like any of those answers, mainly because I can't figure out why he wouldn't have gone after it in the state he was in.:p(And is Bella a textbook case of sadistic personality disorder OR WHAT????! DSM-IV be damned!)
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
I suppose you're right about the BPD (you assumed correctly, Borderline not bipolar and I completely agree about the bipolar, I don't see him having that disorder either), I hadn't really thought too much about the classic symptoms of the disorder and how it might relate to the story.
The bottle contains, or did contain (still unsure until it's written 'in stone') neither DLD, narcotic, alcohol, etc. I can say it was a toxic substance :) I will reveal the contents of the vial in later chapters (I swear! I know I still need to reveal what exactly happened when Minerva slunk into Snape's private chambers, etc., but I promise I will reveal it!), but I didn't really picture him going after the vial because I didn't really see him understanding, fully comprehending, what had happened in those few moments. He was detached and in a very dissociative state, and although he was staring at the container of dubious substance, I didn't really feel that he was, at that time, aware of his surroundings, including the vial. Lost himself in a daydream, staring at it, sort of. (If that makes sense? It's late here, sorry.) When Lupin interrupted his reverie, I doubt very much that Severus was fully conscious of his environment, of Lupin, of his own actions, much less the fate of the vial. I really hope this makes sense?
Response from cmwinters (Reviewer)
Ah, so he was gazing, longingly, at whatever he saw in his head, and the vial just happened to be in his general line of sight from LUPIN'S POV? If that's it, then yes, that makes sense to me. (If that's not it, then I blame it on my state of mind, not your explanation).

What can I say that hasn't been said? I knew the whole time while waiting for the update that it would "special" which is such a weak word. So powerful. Just exactly like an atomic reaction that has lost all it's coolant, he'll destroy himself, everyone, and everything around him and make the soil itself sterile so no life can survive. A frighteningly beautiful rendition. Thank you for your efforts!

And in a world where Harry had always been equated with the light, the whiteness of Good and Innocence, and Tom had been associated with darkness, the blackness of Evil, Severus Snape had, as always, fallen through the cracks to become the gray, the one who could never be interpreted, comprehended, or understood. The white and the black had their supporters, their followers, but the gray was avoided by all. That was a powerfully insightful observation of Snape's character. This was a hard chapter to read, for obvious reasons, but you wrote it exceptionally well. And, of course, it's a vitally important chapter, a rare glimpse into the mind of your Snape from his own point of view. Outstanding.
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
Thank you so much!! Your reviews are so valuable to me! I'm thrilled that you like the black/white/gray thing, it's something I've always thought. Also, I've tried really hard to avoid writing from Snape's POV throughout the story. I've done Minerva's, Lupin's, Hermione's, and even Pansy's, but I've really tried to only catch glimpses of Snape's life through the point of view of others, trying to maintain that mysteriousness. If that's a word. It looks weird to me. Anyhow, this chapter was difficult to write, because I actually had a Snape that opened up a little and described something from his view, while still trying to retain that (doesn't have a thesaurus with her), er, mystery. Yeah, I just woke up. *hopes it all at least makes sense*Thank you again, so much!

Yeah! An update! I love what you did with the prologue of what you had posted on your LJ. I am glad Minerva has maternal feeling toward Severus. I wonder how he will cope with knowing she stood up for him when no one else will. I hope this knowledge that Gryffindor women have heart will help him to bond with Hermione. Well done Little King. This was definitely worth waiting for (though I for one would dearly love more frequent updates)! I am not at all ashamed to admit that one of those votes came from me--this is one of the most original takes on Severus Snape I've ever read, and it deserves to be acknowledged. This is the dark and bitter and twisted and damaged Snape that is perhaps even more likely than the one we often get (and often create ourselves)--the "okay, now that Voldemort is dead, everything's peachy keen, because I was just playing a part" Snape. It's a vile and painful portrait, and it rings psychologically true, unfortunately!I utterly adore the idea that his becoming a spy was one more twisted way to try to win Dumbledore's approval and affection...something he really had no hope of doing, any more than he could hope to have won it from his sick, horrible mess of a father.I do hope the fact that he can actually say out loud what that monster did to him, and also seems to understand that he was the victim in all this, not the reason that it happened, that it isn't his fault---I hope that is a sign that he might be able to start to find a way to heal. Though it will not (cannot) be a simple process. And whatever is up with Mrs. Malfoy? I actually feel sorry for her!
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
Thank you so very much for both the review and the vote! It means more to me than I could possibly express! This Severus is difficult to write, but I can't really write him any other way. I'm so glad you like it!I think Severus really strived for any kind of approval and affection from the three major father figures in his life: Tobias, Tom Riddle, and Dumbledore. It definitely will not be an easy process for him to being healing, but he has at least two people, maybe even three, to help him out.Pansy's story will come to light in the chapters to come, I promise!! Thank you so much!

I was just wondering about this story the other day! Wonderful update, so very upsetting and hoorible about Snape's past. I really enjoyed the contrast between riddle and Harry and then with Snape, gray in between. That was perfect imagery!Livvy

Thank you so, so very much! I've always thought of Snape being the gray in the midst of black (Voldie) and white (Harry). That's what makes him so mysterious and misunderstood, I think.

Ouch, I feel sorry for Severus, but his thinking is abnormal. His making Albus 'need him' gave me the creeps. Great chapter.
Response from KingPig (Author of Conversations)
Thank you so much for the review! I rather think Severus was striving so long for AD's approval and affection, his statment of Albus needing him a twisted way of trying to reconcile the manipulation that AD held over him. Thank you so much!

I'm glad Lupin is coming to a better understanding of Severus after all these years. boo, Dumbledore!! and poor Severus, to still have nobody to help him through these things.Pansy - isn't Draco watching over his underfed and overworked wife? how about a house-elf?? looking forward to the next chapter, and seeing what Hermione is up to. thanks for updating!

Thank you so much for the update! A very intence chapter that's for sure. Now, more than ever, I want to pick Dumbledort to pieces, hurt him beyond words, for his treatment of Severus. Like every figure of authority who knows, but chose not to act on abuse of children, Dumbledore is about as guilty as the one who commits the crime.
Just what is Pancy doing? Or maybe: what are the Malfoy's doing? I think that they have some kind of scheeme going on, something they think will help them gain back some of their "name" and influence? Hopefully Pancy will talk to Remus before it is to late.
I also hope that now that, for the first time in years, the abuse Severus went through as a child and teenager is out in the open, he will get help dealing with it. I don't think one could ever "get over" such abuse, but hopefully he will be able to handle it, deal with it, accept it as a part of his past, and most importantly accept that he was not guilty of any crime that made the violation of him acceptable. I want him to be helped to place the guilt where it belongs, first then he can forgive himself for not being strong enough to stop the abuse himself.
Update again soon!

Thank you so much for the review! I understand completely how you feel about Dumbledore. At one point he was intended to be redeemed in this story, but I think he's quite beyond that now.As for Pansy, that will be revealed soon, I promise you.And help is on its way for Severus! He will never "get over it," as you said, but he may find out that he is not as alone and isolated as he feels he is. We have at least two people doing their best to aid him, with more on the way.Thank you again!

WONDERFUL work as usual. You make the characters come alive, and I felt as I was there, in the dungeons, witnessing Severus assault on Remus.
I wonder where you will take it from here? I don't really mind, as I would follow (hound) you to the ends of the earth for an update.
Sorry to be picky, but if you used the UK English spell checker it would make the story even better, in my humble opinion. i.e. gray (US) is spelt grey in the english language.
Loving the story so far and don't worry about the slow updates as I am still here in the US for another 8 days as I leave for Chicago on the 5th for Terminus.
Love Sonia :)

Thank you so, so much! Poor Remus, getting assualted twice in as many chapters. I know I keep saying this, but things really will start getting better for Severus in the chapters to come. Of course, there will be bumps along the way. I was afraid to do the UK English as I feared I'd muck it up entirely and make my beta (AM) work far too hard on correcting it all. I will consider it in my next story, however.Thank you so, so much again!

The UK English is just adding little things, i.e. u's, in. It's really not that big a deal to most people, but that was the only thing I could fault you on when reading your story for the TNL awards.
Love Sonia :)
