I am married and have three sons. SF and fantasy are my favorite genres and J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula LeGuin, Robert Jordan (both with and without Brandon Sanderson) and George R.R. Martin are some of my fav authors. I really enjoy reading HP fanfic because there is so much variety. I also write fanfic when I get the time--SS/HG for the most part.
Oh, and my day job is a university professor. (Yeah, I'm a nerd!)

OMG, you're doing a brilliant job! This is swimming along!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Wow, brilliant? Thank you for your kind words!
Wooooooooowee! You pack a punch in your first chapter! I'm going to zip right thru if you keep writing so well!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thanks!
I really enjoyed this chapter, what will hg do if voldie wins, and it certainly looks like he might. I wonder though how you will keep hg/ss together if harry wins, if in fact a happy ending is what you intend. I look forward to the next chapter as always.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Oh, I can't answer your questions, that would spoil the surprise...I will upload the next chapter as soon as I can. Thanks for reviewing!
Oh, no. It looks as though Severus' and Hermione's time together might be drawing to a close. I'm not sure what to think about Lestrange's motivation(s). Lestrange may not be so friendly afterall, at least not so friendly with Severus. It makes me wonder if he's after Hermione for himself, but I don't really think so. Interesting. Thanks for the great update!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Lestrange is really a sincere friend to Snape--he was simply careless around Voldemort. Some action and emotion coming up next...Thanks for taking the time to review!
interesting chapter look forward to more, I am a little worried about what voldie plans to do with his new info.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yes, he's so nasty--nothing he plans can really be considered 'good'! More up soon!
Doesn't Voldy remember that Severus was supposed to gain her trust for the Dark Lord to use?? That this is not a true no-no that Rabastan is squealing on, but just a good... erm... progress report? Sigh. And I'm sure Krum is up to something that may not be good. Did you say you're already working on the next chapter? Thanks for the new chapter!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Sure old Voldy knows Severus is doing what he is supposed to--he's just not happy that he had to 'hear' it from someone else. And Severus won't like the response either... The next chapter will be uploaded to the queue thursday or friday, so the wait should not be too long. Thanks for taking the time to review.
Hmm, will Krum survive this story, and are Krum's motives pure or not.... I wonder if the Ministry will be able to keep Macnair's survival a secret - not if they put him on trial, of course. Too bad Lestrange didn't get offed, but I guess you have more for him to do. Thanks for the new chapter!!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I can't tell you what happens to Krum or Macnair--that would spoil the surprise...but Lestrange certainly has an important role in the upcoming chapters! Thanks for reviewing.
An absolutly wonderful story. I really enjoyed it. I hope things work out for poor Severus, it seems to me that you are portraying him as a not so bad guy. Keep it up I am a huge Severus fan!!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Well, it's not over for a while--there will be about 24 chapters total, so I hope you keep reading and enjoying! My Severus is very flawed, but not all bad (one of the reasons for the title: Shades). Thanks for taking the time to review!
I had a feeling that they were going to condemn poor stan after what severus did for him, either way he was doomed, at least he is free in a small way, although I cannot imagine being on the lamb very free. As always I eagerly await the next installment.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yeah, Stan, the poor bugger, can't get any peace! It's always that way with governments that value image over justice. Glad you are enjoying the story--thanks for taking the time to review!
got a bad feeling about this--Severus thinks Macnair is dead, but he's not. anyway, nice Val's day present to have Severus & Hermione snuggling after a hard day for him @ Az.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I didn't plan to have that last snuggling scene published on Valentine's day, but you are right--it adds a nice touch to the day! Thanks for your review!
I'm so glad that Severus made it out alive--I was not aware that he'd be directly involved. So happy for Stan!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Don't get too happy for Stan just yet... Severus too, has to face the consequences of the raid. That's coming up next!
Response from Lyndie578 (Reviewer)
Just a rhetorical response, but consequences from Hermione once she understands what he's done? I do who will force him to suffer(?) the consequences of his actions.
whoa--what the heck was Shunpike doing in AZ?!? The story's progressing quite nicely.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
He was taken into Ministry custody during HBP (offstage). If you recall, Harry berated Scrimgeour (when they met at the Burrow) for "chucking poeple into Azkaban" before finding out if they are really death eaters. I just took it to the next step. Glad you like the way the plot is developing and thanks for the review.
This is great! I can't wait to see what happens next. I especially appreciate the consistency of Snape and Hermione both. They're very true to canon!
Write On!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
It really makes me happy to know that readers like you enjoy my portrayal of JKR's characters. I have worked hard to keep them close to canon-in so far as my own interpretation goes. Thanks for your kind words and for taking the time to review.
Hooray! another great chapter!

Thanks karlamarie! I am glad you enjoyed it. More up soon.
Very good chapter. I felt so bad for Hermione with her birthday and no friends or family to spend it with. I look forward to reading about how the relationship between her and Snape goes.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yes, she's very much alone--and that will have its effects on her and her interactions with Snape eventually. Thanks for taking the time to review.
I never really liked Kreacher... lol. Poor 'Mione though! I love Severus' line about her majority. Very Slytherin and Snape-like. Keep it up, darling!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Who could like Kreacher? I had a hard enough time summoning up a tiny bit of sympathy for him. Snape just has a way with words that brings out the best in writers!!Thanks for your kind review.
Great story so far. It's definitely different then a lot of the other SS/HG stories out there, so definitely refreshing. I'm looking forward to reading more... soon.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thank you! I am really happy that you find it novel. That's one of the things I often strive for, but don't often reach! The next chapter is about to be validated, so look for it later today.
This is great! I've just read all 8 chapters in one sitting and really like it - can't wait for the next chapter! I especially like the way you're keeping Snape's character closer to true canon. It's not nearly such a stretch of imagination to see him in this context. Write on!!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I am really glad that you appreciate my efforts at writing canon Snape. I like to fit my own theories and perceptions about the characters into the web of clues and details of the HP world. The next chapter is in queue and should be up in a couple of days.
Hmmm, a bird with manners or an Animagus?? *Looks about shrewdly while stroking her chin* Interesting developments, to say the least!
I wonder about Malfoy too, with all his Pure-Blood ideaology. I sincerely hope that he's wrong about Half-Bloods and Mudbloods, though I hope even more that it never comes to that ;) Harry has to win!!
It seems the bedroom is softening Severus up a bit too, if his telling of the story about why he defected to Voldemort is any indication. I had never really given it much thought before, but I think you've hit a very good point about Dumbledore asking Snape to resume spying for him. Anyone would be upset after all that.
And just as a side-note, I would have thought Severus had figured out the DADA position was jinxed, and that was why Dumbledore really held him back from the job . . . Perhaps not, though - Snape is only human, after all :)

Hi
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
! As to your animagus theory--it's a clever supposition, but unfortunately, the owl is just an owl (albeit a well-trained one).Malfory is indeed a right little bigot. I detest him in the books, movies and in fanfics too. I guess that's why I can never quite manage suspension of disbelief in Draco/Ginny, Draco/Hermione and Draco/Harry fics. In addition to trying to show the reader Snape's perspective on the events JKR paints so glibly (and allows us to see only through the 'Harry filter'), I wanted to point out the obvious inconsistencies in canon Dumlbledore's information to Harry (and thus to Harry's friends and to us, the readers). I don't think Dumbledore was nefarious or anything--just guilty of manipulation and withholding of information for what he sees as the greater good. You are right that a sharp guy like Snape probably knew the DADA position was jinxed--but I simply cannot fit every detail of canon into my web of hypotheses...Thanks for your review!
This chapter, I think, is the best interpretation of how Snape could kill Dumbledor.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I am gratified that you agree with my interpretation of events. I see Snape as the kind of man who is determined to survive--no matter the cost. While I would love to believe the theories that Snape was ordered to do it by Dumbledore, I just don't think that's how the canon plot will play out. Thanks for reviewing. More up soon!
The bird has manners...lol my lord thats clever!
loved the chapter can't wait for your next update!

Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thanks. I couldn't resist that bit at the end! The next chapter is in queue. I appreciate that you took the time to post a review.
I like how you trick the reader into thinking something is going to happen ... and then it doesn't quite go the way one thought it would. And here, I thought I had it figured out. Hahaha!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I hope that I can keep you, and everyone else guessing. That's half the fun of a story! And thanks for fixing and posting this chapter for me.
wonder how long it'll take her to adjust. enjoying it so far! god i hate pettigrew... *shudder*
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yeah, I hate Pettigrew too! He's so slimy... She and Snape will come to an equalibrium of sorts soon.
Another lovely chapter, and bravo for Snape's anger over Wormtail!!
I would say he's already setting up his own downfall! *smirk*
Waiting impatiently for more . . .
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Well, they each have a lot to learn about each other ( and themselves). The next chapter is in queue--Thanks for your review.
I'm so impressed with the way you've woven JKR's plotline with your own in this story, from the people you're using (Bones) to getting Ginny involved and Pettigrew sharing the house at Spinners End.
*Runs off to read chapter four*
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thank you for the compliment. I love details too--they make the world inside the story come alive.
