I am married and have three sons. SF and fantasy are my favorite genres and J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula LeGuin, Robert Jordan (both with and without Brandon Sanderson) and George R.R. Martin are some of my fav authors. I really enjoy reading HP fanfic because there is so much variety. I also write fanfic when I get the time--SS/HG for the most part.
Oh, and my day job is a university professor. (Yeah, I'm a nerd!)

AAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIEEEEEEE!!!!! And where is Krum - did Harry et al. leave Krum behind to kill Severus? Is Lucius one of the "soldiers" left behind too? Hermy left Severus in the Death Eaters' den without a wand, and is taking an UNTESTED Impenetrable Potion that might still leave the taker vulnerable to non-magical attack. WHERE IS THE NEXT CHAPTER??? ACK!!!!
Response from June W (Reviewer)
And she left Severus tied up so he can't even walk away!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Guilty as charged: this is my most evil cliffie. I will upload the next chapter tuesday most likely--I cannot do it sooner as I will be out of town for a day and a half. At least I am holding your interest...She needs his wand to fight the DEs with Harry and Ron and she cannot untie him because he would probably end up preventing her from going with them (or even injure her friends). Remember, he is a dangerous man, even without magic. Thanks or the review.
Oh you're terrible, I can't wait for the next chapter, I hope it will be coming soon.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yes, it's in queue. I am glad you are enjoying the story.
I'm so glad that Snape chose Hermione at last. It's been difficult to find him a sympathetic hero when he effused loyalty to Voldemort's demands. But now.... this is gettin' good!
Write On!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I hope you continue to like it--things ae going to be shaken up with this next chapter....I know what you mean about liking Snape--I have deliberately written him as a flawed hero -- otherwise where's the challenge for him to evolve?.More up soon!
Lovely chapter, can't wait for the next update hope it comes soon.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thanks. I will do the best I can.
Sigh.... this is NOT a good time for S&H to go to the Burrow and see Ron, Harry, Remus.... As for the Forster quote, there are two "friends" - Harry and Severus; and at least two "causes" - kill Voldemort (which requires saving Harry), and save Hermione and Severus (which may require killing Voldemort). And I'm still not sure which side Krum is on, if he's a true friend. You've got me all twisted up in knots!!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
LOL! Severus is not likely to go to the Burrow for any reason! The double-meanings on the Forster quote are very clever too-thanks for pointing those out. Krum's real alliegance will be clear in the next chapter...Thanks for your review.
Oh boy... what a chapter! I can't wait to see where this goes.
I love that Hermione didn't actually demand an Unbreakable Vow. I think that would eventually erode the trust between them. How can she believe he truly cares for her with the Vow in place? His feelings could be based entirely on teh Vow and no longer on himself. Having her place her trust in him non-magically will go a long way in the development of their relationship.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Glad you liked it--there's a real rocker coming up next...I also felt that for the sake of trust a vow would be bad--that and it just doesn't fit with Hermione's personality.
While this chapter was a bit gory, it advanced the story nicely, and it was satisfying to see Wormtail finally get what was coming to him. I hope we'll see more of Celia Macnair in future chapters; I like her quirkiness.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yes, sorry about the blood and guts, but a little violence was necessary to get things done. I, too, am happy Wormtail is dead--he's such a slimy little rat--I hope JKR offs him in a spectacular way! Sorry, but Celia won't be back. I liked her too, but she's played her part and I need to concentrate on the major players now. Cheers and thanks for taking the time to review.
Oh! Hermione got away! How smart of her to use potions...and ironic, since she is escaping the Potions Master's home. And another Horcrux destroyed? They're getting nearer to the end, aren't they?Keep up the excellent work.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yes we are building up to some big events. Lots of dramma up next. Thanks for your review!
well I wonder how hg is doing, and if she got very far away, I hope so because I really want Harry to win.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Your answer should be up today! I just made corrections to the next chapter and it should get posted very soon. Thanks for your review!
Eeks!! Will Hermione be safe, will Severus be safe, and it sounds like the Impenetrable Potion does not protect against non-magical attacks like knives and swords... I don't know if Hermione will listen to Severus now. Eeks!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Ooh, I never thought about non-magical attacks--that's a good idea! You will see how Hermione reacts to Severus in the next chapter, which should be up today. Thanks for your review.
well that was worth the two days wait. I hope the next chapter is about ready to be in the que. I also have a bad feeling severus is going to use this memory to his benefit, and I don't think the boys can recover from that.
Response from wilder0511 (Reviewer)
oops, got confused with another one of my reads, the wait was a little longer than two days, but well worth the wait at any rate.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
The next is in queue, so it should be up soon. The boys will indeed have to deal with some tough stuff. Thanks for reviewing.
I am enjoying your story. Just a small point. You underline words for emphasis. Once in a while it is fine, but I found it distracting. The words should supply the emphasis themselves. For what it's worth.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yes, I see what you mean. But I wanted to distinguish the emphasized words from the thoughts-which were italicised. Glad you like the story and thanks for letting me know what you think. Cheers!
They are slowly starting to really apprecaite each other for who they are on the inside (pardon the cliche). Glad to see Hermione's brain is not rotting away and that she's still engaging in critcal thinking. Perhaps she'll be able to make sure that both she and Snape survive this thing--I still think he's truly in the Order's pocket. Thanks for the great chapters!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Snape's ambiguity is one of the things that makes him so intriguing. He's so much fun to write! Thanks for your review.
I love this story so much, and I find myself intrigued by every turn. I like how we cannot tell what Snape's true alliance is, and how by trying to persuade Hermione to his side, he is being turned as well. I also appreciate how you give us more than one subplot at a time, so that we can see what's going on in more than one place at a time, knowing that in the end, both plots will become one.Love it, and can't wait for more! (I know, I'm an impatient one.)
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thank you for your kind words. I'm really happy that you like the story so much! I also like to switch between the subplots--it keeps things interesting. Being able to see different events and from different characters perspectives is part of the fun.More up soon--The next chapter is in queue.
I just came across your story today and decided to give it a read. I love the whole manipulation game going on. So many players are in it some seem to be losing their own ground. I love LeStrange in this too. Not enough stories with him in them and your view of him is quite unique.Hope to see an update soon as I am most definatly bookmarking this story.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I'm so happy you forund my story and are enjoying it! Thanks for your kind words about my characterization and plot. The next two chapters are in queue and I intend to keep updating regularly, so stay tuned...
I know the story's finished but you used Viktor and Victor. It should be Viktor.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thanks for the correction. If you can tell me which chapters have this mistake, I will go in and correct it!Happy reading!
What else are they good for except fantasies?
Too true!!
So it seems I may be right abour Rabastan after all :) Is he the one giving the memories to Voldemort to send Harry? I also like how he's pushing Severus into recognizing his feelings, albeit slowly.
Can't wait for the next installment!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
The memories are coming directly from Severus. Voldemort views his memories of Hermione and takes the ones he thinks will bother Harry the most. He is trying to give the Order the impression that she's turning against them. Thanks for all the reviews--it was a nice surprise to find them!
You had me giggling nicely by the end of this . . . exit strategy indeed! I wonder how that will resolve itself!!
Rabastan was a surprise, but I see how he could be useful to Voldemort's cause. I do wonder about his intention though - if he's spying in Snape, really trying to turn Hermione, or attempting to court her like Severus thought. Speaking of which, Snape was getting a little green-eyes there ;)
*Runs off to read next chapter*
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Rabastan is a loyal DE, but also a real friend to Snape. He is just trying to get his friend fixed up. And yes, Snape is a bit poseessive of Hermione... that will take some time to develop. You will see, in a chapter or two, what happened to Harry, Ron and Remus after Minerva caught them.
So many developments in this chapter!! I hardly know where to start.
Moving backwards, it seems Hermione has settled in nicely to her captivity. I enjoyed how you had her extend her arm for the tether spell without any prompting, not to mention her willingness to help Severus on an unknown potion.
The cloak as a gift was excellent! Not to mention throwing that LotR bit in - that line evokes a great image in my mind.
I like how you've been keeping up with Harry, Ron, Remus and Tonks as well, not to mention the Horcruxes.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yes, this is a busy chapter. I like to move back and forth between characters, both to vary the scene and point of view--it keeps things interesting (I hope).Perhaps Hermione is a little too compliant, but she does not have much choice--and Snape is beginning to gain her confidence. Thanks for your perspective. I like to know which parts readers think are are appealing -- or flawed.
Well, now I know never to cross Severus Snape!! That was one nasty spell he did!
I really enjoyed the Death Eater meeting, and now you've got me to wondering what this ability is Hermione may/may not have :) I'm still not too sure about Krum's motives either - if he's being honest or trying to deceive Hermione and Snape.
As for Hermione and Severus sharing a bedroom in Malfoy's safehouse *snickers* I hope it gives Hermione a chance to see Severus in a more sympathetic light being in such close quarters and that, in turn, the same happens with Severus in regards to Hermione ;) We shall see, eh?
Very lovely chapter!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I, too, liked writing the death eater meeting--I wanted to add details that made sense to me. I have read quite a few fics where the DE meetings are just a couple of crucios. But I always thought that Voldemort must spend some time to plan and execute his "takeover" of the wizarding world...Snape and Hermione will indeed get to know one another better in the coming chapters. Thanks for being a consistent reviewer and giving me your thoughts,
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
!
I really like your idea of the trophy being another horcrux! Wow I never thought of it, but it is an exellent idea. I am really enjoying the story. Keep up the great work.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thanks for the encouragement and for taking the time to review. (Sorry I took so long to answer, I was out of town.)
Another very nice addition to your story, Orm Irian :) I especially like your idea about Riddle's award for Special Services to the school being a Horcrux! And Krum was a nice addition, though I wonder if he was telling Hermione the truth about not really wanting to be a Death Eater . . . And finally, I like how you're having Snape's character progress in his attitude towards Hermione. It's subtle enough that you haven't made anyone OOC, but strong enough to be felt. Bravo!!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thanks! It's not often that I can claim much in the way of subtlty! (I'm no Slytherin.) As the story progresses, I will try to show how changes in several characters (not just Snape) occur gradually--as they usually do in RL. Glad you liked the chapter. You will see some more of Viktor, too. Thanks for your review.

Ditto!
Again, very nice! I especially liked the scene with Hermione and Snape running from Pettigrew and the Order - I'd side-along apparate with Severus anyday :p
I can't wait to see more!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I hope to have another chapter up in a day or two. Thanks for your review!
