I am married and have three sons. SF and fantasy are my favorite genres and J.R.R. Tolkien, Ursula LeGuin, Robert Jordan (both with and without Brandon Sanderson) and George R.R. Martin are some of my fav authors. I really enjoy reading HP fanfic because there is so much variety. I also write fanfic when I get the time--SS/HG for the most part.
Oh, and my day job is a university professor. (Yeah, I'm a nerd!)
Reviews for Shades
I stumbled onto this story and loved the first chapter - I wonder who the 3 deatheaters were. Good layout and loved the battle scene.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Great! Glad you're on board and I hope you enjoy the story. If you like battles, there will be several battle scenes in the story line.
Great story. I don't usually want to read anything where Snape wasn't completely loyal to Dumbledore....but this one sucked me in anyway =) I look forward to a sequel!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I am gratified that you thought the story was compelling enough to keep reading. Thanks for taking the time to read and review!
*rubs hands together anxiously* so they are progressing in relationship terms, yes. silly Snape giving her stuff.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
He thinks he is just gaining her trust--he can't see that he is being drawn in at the same time...
Muahahaha! Snape spills it all. Well, not all . . . but pretty much. I hope Draco dies.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
He, he! Snape NEVER tells anyone all the info he knows... He enjoys the power of having something someone else lacks.
I would love it if you did a short (or long) sequel on what happens to Severus after his sentance. Will he go back to hogwarts? do something new for a living? Have a romance, after all, he won't even be a middle aged wizzard.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I have an idea for a sequel about the two of them, but little time to write it... I will work on it as I find the time. Thanks for reading this long story--my own version of book seven! I also appreciate that you took the time to leave a review. Cheers and best wishes!
The trophy as a Horcrux? Brilliant! It would definitely be something he would use.
Although, I am having a hard time wrapping my ‘but he’s a nice guy’ image of Krum around his being a Death Eater. I’ll just have to see how you handle this… and read on……
Truley enjoying the read by the way....
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Glad you liked my Horcrux theory -- however, I doubt JKR will go there...Krum is a bit of an enigma in this story, but by the end you will know where he stands. Thanks for reading and reviewing!
A sequel! Yes!!! I cant wait!!!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I am glad that makes you happy! Cheers and thanks for the review.
Well, you've already seen what I think of your ending, but it bears repeating. I think you ended the story intelligently and with a great deal of keeping these characters true to themselves. Hermione must continue to grow up, must learn whether it's Snape she cares for or was it the circumstances which forced her emotional attachment. And Severus, for all that I adore his snarky, self-serving ways, has reparation to pay to his community -- he did, after all, kill Dumbledore regardless of the reasons.I do look forward to seeing where/when/how you're going to put the sequel together.

Thanks for your comments (and affirmations),

. I especialy appreciate your observation that the ending was appropriate for the plot and characterization. As to the sequel, it will be short in comparison to Shades. It will also be formatted differently. Rather than a continuous timeline, it will consist of a series of vignettes. Thanks for all your thoughtful, insightful reviews and support during the time it took me to complete this story. Cheers and all the best,Orm Irian
Wow, I'v been reading your story for awhile, but have been unable to review due to sit and personal pc problems. I think its a lovely story, my only question is will you do a sequal? After all its only ten years. Will Hermione wait (undoubtably continuing her education) or will she hook up with Ron?
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I am definately planning to do a sequel. It will be a little while, though -- RL calls and I HAVE to answer! I cannot answer your questions about future events without spoiling things for the sequel. I guess you will just have to wait and see what happens. Thanks for reading and taking the time to leave a reveiw!
Well, now that I have finished enjoying this wonderful work, I have a few overall comments.
This is an extremely well-crafted story. Aside from the couple of things I've already mentioned, the events follow very well from each other and delve into delicious twists and conflicts. Just when things look bad, they get worse. On top of that, your timing, aside from the sex, has been perfect.
In fan fiction, it seems that stories have a tendency to spiral out of control or simply move along in a straight line. While often very pleasurable, they lack the nuances of good craft, which you display here so greatly. Everything fit together amazingly well and the decisions people make have plausible and evil consequences. I also was impressed by how well you kept Hermione and Snape in character.
I'm highly impressed.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Wow! Thank you for your extravagant praise! I am deeply gratified that you found the story well-thought out and executed, as I put a considerable time and effort into it. I feel as if I have created something worthwhile when readers show appreciation! Thanks too, for all your reviews and support.
Loved the story up until the end.? Ten years of being pushed around by those people and he's supposed to be grateful for it?? I hope Hermione is miserable for the entire ten years and realizes it's her own fault.? Guess the lesson is don't ever weaken and start to care for somebody because they'll betray you and go free while you go to prison.? This is the first time I've actually wished Nagini had eaten somebody.? Ah well, I can have hopes for the sequel.? I did enjoy all of the rest of the story and thought you did an excellent job.? Just because I didn't like the ending here doesn't mean I don't appreciate all of your efforts.? I realize that not everyone is a happy-ending junkie like me.? Nothing more bitter than a happy ending junkie who didn't get the happy ending, huh?? ;) Thanks for all your work!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I appreciate (and anticipated) that some readers would not be completely happy with the ending. After all, we read this stuff for recreation/relaxation and want to be happy at the end. In addition, many of us are 'Severus fans.' I also am aware that I led the reader to see Snape sympathetically to a certain degree--but that does not really mitigate the things he did wrong. He was/is a seriously flawed hero in this story. He has many issues to work on if he wants to function normally within his own society. In any case, 'the lesson' as you put it, was not meant to be so cynical. I intended to convey my thoughts on the mutable nature of good and evil (i.e. it's not black and white but comes in many "shades" of grey), the nature of love, and what maturity means to different people. I am optimistic that you and others will see the hope contained in the ending I chose for this story. I honestly felt that to force a fluffy, sugary happy ending would be false to the tone of this piece. Thanks for giving me your honest opinion. I am grateful for all comments and I appreciate that you took the time to leave a review. All the best, Orm Irian.

Thanks for your very gracious reply.? I felt guilty after I was done sulking since I didn't want you to think I was criticizing you as an author. ?[Especially since I've been too much of a wuss to put my own stuff out in public.]? I really did enjoy the story a great deal.? I'd had yet another horrid day at work and was craving a happy ending fix.? Actually, an escaped Snape with a Hermione miserable because she had betrayed him would have worked just fine with me; I'm not a total sugar junkie!? I actually worried when I got the alert that you had responded -- I thought you were going to basically tell me, too bad, it's your story and I could just quit being such a whinybutt (as a colleague of mine says).? Anyway, I'll definitely be looking forward to the sequel. Thanks again!
Excellent! I love how her choice fits well with what V. said about her and causes. Very nicely done.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I am glad that you see the 'rightness' of Hermione's choice. She has to retain her values or she risks losing part of herself.
I loved the Cone of Silence!
I've followed this story here and on another site. It's well-written and compelling. Of course, we would never want Hermione to be captured and treated that way, but I think there's a little victim fantasy in all of us. You've managed to capture that well.
I'll look forward to your sequel.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thank you for your very kind review. I'm truely happy that you enjoyed the story and found the storytelling compelling. I think all fanfiction has a heavy dependence on fantasy, so you are definately right about the victim scenario. Thanks for taking the time to leave your thoughts.
I've never heard of a single selfless act by Scrimgeour! I'm glad to see Stan Shunpike again; I was afraid he'd be mind-zapped just because he was an "escaped Death Eater." Percy was a surprise, but I suppose he and Aurors might think it would be better to have Snape killed (rather than Aurors) by dangerous artifacts; he's certainly cheaper. Will Krum get a trial too since he also has a Dark Mark? I still wonder why the Impenetrable Potion never got mentioned in court, since that was so important in the final battle and could help Aurors; I assume Hermione still has his notes. Ten years, eh? I know, I know... wait for the sequel!! These will be a l-o-n-g couple of months, but I should survive. Thanks for this chapter, and I'll be eagerly waiting your next post!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Ooh, picked up on Scrimgeour's hypocrosy, did you? Yes, I brought Stan back for a last curtain call. As to Percy, he is really in his element here: he gets to brownnose with his boss, revel in his 'precious rules' and look good to his family all at the same time!! I had fun with that one! I could not include all the details, but Krum was exonerated by Harry and company for his role as a spy against Voldie. I also let the Impenetrable Potion slide too--as I could not wrap up every detail--but I got a lot of them. Hopefully all the main themes are played out and clear to the readers.I'm glad you liked the story and I hope to be able to keep my commitment on the sequel. RL is about to get more intense. I'm bracing for it. Thanks for all your reviews, comments and support during the time it took to write this story.
Response from June W (Reviewer)
I'm glad writing this was fun for you! Certainly more fun than grading your students' papers. I hope to see the Impenetrable Potion in the sequel. It seems to have been in half the chapters in this story, motivated Hermione to change her view on Severus and escape, and helped the trio in the final battle - not just a little detail. I can imagine Severus wanting its protection in the next ten years when he's dealing with the icky dark objects and curses the Aurors will be throwing his way. Yikes! I hope he doesn't lose an eye and leg like Mad-Eye Moody. Okay, please tell your students to be smarter this semester so you have time to write the sequel...
Wow. The timing in this is fabulous! So much complication: the boys see that just when Hermione needs them most! Great!
One thought I had though was that Snape and Hermione could work secretly on a counter to the potion rather than defect entirely from the Death Eaters: while not something Hermione would consider, it seems more in character for Snape to suggest that rather than the grand gesture of leaving entirely, and I think she'd compromise on that considering her other options. That said, it's still fantastic.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Thanks for the kind words. That is an interesting idea, unfortunately I can't follow it, as the story is completely written. Thanks for taking the time to read and review!
I didn't have a problem with the power issue or anything, but the sudden desire to have sex was... well, a bit sudden. It felt ... choppy. Like -- why now? Yes, there has been some jealousy, but aside from the one time that Hermione avoids fantasizing about him, there haven't been any fantasies, and in that one she avoids it -- there's no indication she's changed her mind, and then suddenly BAM! sex. Seemed a little unrealistic.
But I have been enjoying the story greatly, and am very excited to see what will happen next.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Glad you are enjoying the story. I know what you mean about the suddenness. I have been thinking that maybe it needs a little revision...Thanks for your review.
Yeesh, that Universitas Oblivate sounds dreadful; to punish a person who doesn't even remember what he's being punished for seems pointless. So did Hermione reveal to anyone that the trio were protected by the Impenetrable Potion that Severus created - a potion the Aurors might like to have, if they can make a plea-bargain type of deal with Severus? Is Krum going to say anything? I wish she had explained that when Severus made the Unbreakable Vow, he did not know what Draco's task was, he was only bluffing that he knew it. Perhaps in next chapter? Thank you for the update!! (feels a bit more hopeful for Severus)
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Yes, the total memory destruction charm is just another version of capital punishment--without the body. Very nasty! I can't tie up every loose end you mentioned, but I will get to most of them. Hold on--the conclusion is in the queue.
Don't be too concerned; Hermione is definately thinking about Severus. In the next chapter you will see how she handles her confilcts over friends vs. Severus. It is time for the Trio to take those irrevocalbe steps into adulthood--although each of them will arrive via a different route...Thanks for your reviews. I really enjoy knowing what readers think about the story and I like to have the chance to dialogue with you all.
Response from orm irian (Reviewer)
I have no clue how this happened... Must be the gremlins again!
sigh.... it has been one or two days and Hermione has not contacted Severus yet, despite knowing he is under arrest and in danger of nasty Ministry stuff. Sigh.... is she going to choose her friends over Severus again? What is Krum saying? Sigh... hang in there, Sevvy!

What we think about the story? We think: EEPS!!!!! We bite our fingernails worrying about the characters and what you're going to do with them. We grow gray hairs waiting for the next chapter and then curse the cliffhanger. I curse myself for not being patient enough to read this as a "completed" work instead of torturing myself with a WIP. My only consolation is that you are not a teenage fangurl with a record of abandoning stories. Have I told you yet that I like your story? Now write Sevvy that next chapter, please!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
The next TWO chapters are already in the queue! They complete the story and so, you won't have to bite your nails anymore!
(looks suspiciously at author) So they had time to rescue Viktor and Remus but not Severus? Grumble.... And Harry is filled with love despite his hatred of all things Snape? Hmm.... (waits for next chapter) Hang in there, Snapey!!!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Of course they didn't 'rescue' Severus... Harry tied him up on the presumption that he is a DE. Hermione can't release him-- he would, most likely, try to prevent her from going to the Ministry to fight Voldie, something she feels very strongly that she has to do.You are right about the love/hate contradition in Harry's characterization. But in my defense, I am trying to base it on canon. JKR has showed both these extremes in her young hero's personality. Two examples that come to mind are: at the end of OotP, Voldemort can't possess Harry and Dumbledore claims it is because he has love in his heart; also I recall more than one incident in canon where Harry's actually thinks about how much he hates Snape. So, the dichotomy in Harry's personality is well-established in canon--I am just using it for my own plot.In any case, I hope you liked the action and Voldemort's death scene. I had fun writing it!Cheers and thanks for reviewing.
Ah, I love it all so far. It seems that Hermione has discovered what her choices are, but which way will it end? What will she choose? So many questions and I just can't wait for the answers.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
I'm happy you are enjoying the story. I will be uploading another chapter today.
Oh boy..with Severus away anything could happen (and not for the better). Keep it coming, I can't wait.
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
You got that right--just wait and see what develops next...Thanks for the review. I will post the next chapter as soon as I can.
gahhh! A cliffy! I've been reading yoru excellent story all afternoon, and am now being cut off. Dang! Update soon!
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Glad you are enjoying the story. Patience... I will upload the next chapter as soon as I can.
Interesting chapter. I wonder if the Order will interrogate Wormtail at some point, ad come to the conclusion that Hermione helped Snape?
Response from orm irian (Author of Shades)
Actually, if they catch Wormtail, they won't be interrogating him. The Order will get a voew of Hermione soon... and the boys won't be pleased.
