Severus has spent three years making Hermione's life as difficult as possible, in hopes that she'll resign her post and leave Hogwarts. When she does, however, he discovers that it's not in his best interest if she leaves, after all. Written for Musamihi for the 2011 SSHG Gift Exchange.

I'm a forty-something American woman who is addicted to the SSHG pairing, relatively new to this fandom. I'm also considering starting some original fiction soon...
Check out the story I co-wrote with Remarkable -- it's called "Hidden Attractions" and (as soon as it's through the queue) it's archived under the penname remarkable_linlawless.
For those who are interested, I've got two WIPs at my website (which I will eventually post here, but not until I have a complete draft). It's easy and free to join the website, so I hope you'll visit!
I am honored that my story, Witchy Woman, has been selected as a featured story for September 2010. Better yet, this honor came with the very awesome banner at the top of this post!
Here's a couple of banners my friend Atuliel made for the two WIPs at my website:
Reviews for On the Other Side of Hate
I'm glad Hermione is having a little bit of fun at his expence, but please don't make her give in too easily....
and make Snape actually see what he did to her, please
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Hermione is going to be a lot tougher to crack than Severus seems to think, which is good because that's likely the only way he could begin to truly respect her. I think he's going to be surprised at how hard he has to work to get her to even consider staying. Thanks for the comment!
Great Hermione, taunting Severus for being a butt for so long. I hope treatment comes soon enough though...
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
LOL, glad you enjoyed Hermione getting a little revenge. :) Treatment will be very soon. Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for this lovely story!
ooh, more please.... as soon. This is wonderful
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Thank you! So glad you're enjoying it! (Just posted the next chapter!) :D
Severus has personal excuses for his attitude, but since he's not forthcoming with them, he's figured that he's justified at acting like a jerk because he's in pain. He doesn't realize that people would make allowances for his physical discomfort if he'd only say something. Then to find out from Lily that Hermione's tried to help him in the past, and he had his head so far up his arse he didn't acknowledge it - I'm sure that was a bit of an eye opener for him! I think he's got some growing up to do - and soon. Is it just me, or does the justfication that he's acting like a true Slytherin come across as though every Slytherin must be childish and immature to an extent?
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
I love that you took time to write such a thoughtful review! Thank you!I think Severus has a history that has taught him he must never show weakness (i.e., admit he's in pain). I think he's finally starting to consider the possibility that he might have misjudged a lot of things and a lot of people in his life. I don't necessarily think of him as *acting* like a true Slytherin in his behavior toward Hermione -- it's more that I see him as viewing her actions and words through the prism of having dealt mostly with Slytherins who often had hidden motives, along with Dumbledore, who always had agendas he wasn't sharing. His response to seeing things that way is definitely not as mature or professional as one would wish, but if you think about it, he was like that in canon rather a lot (what sort of mature adult is as nasty to children as he was to Harry & co.?) He definitely has some growing up to do before Hermione will be willing to give him the time of day.
How cute... dream Hermione... bossy Hermione! And ho stuborn can that man be. Oh my! I love your story. Thank you for sharing.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
I admit, that dream was ridiculously fun to write! Glad you're enjoying the story, and thank you very much for reviewing. :)
Sounds like Severus' subconscious is trying to get through his thick skull from the inside out. And that last bit made me wonder if part of his problem may be that, deep down, he recognizes Hermione's similarities to Lily and resents her for it. Could it be that, all along, he's been punishing Hermione in Lily's stead?
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Severus's subconscious definitely has plenty to say to him -- I suspect it always has, to one degree or another, which may be part of his problem. I certainly think his history with Lily factors into his attitude with Hermione, but I'm going to make you wait and see exactly how, 'cause I'm just evil that way. ;) On the plus side, the next chapter should be posted in the next day or so. Thanks for reviewing! :D
I agree with MuseAmusant review. The muggle assumption line. He truly is being an ass, and for him to even consider her blackmailing him is so out of character for her I can't understand how he could come to that conclusion. In any event, it will be quite interesting to see how he tries to change her mind to stay. Harry and Luna? I would never see that one coming...
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Well, blackmail per se is not entirely out of character for her, given what she did to Rita Skeeter. But I do think she'd be a lot less subtle about it if that was her intention. It's funny, I've read a number of stories where Harry and Luna were together, and they always seem like a pretty good match to me. In any event, I appreciate the review, and I hope you'll continue to enjoy the story. Thanks! :)
It seems Severus never heard that old Muggle line about assumptions and asses. And he has been a perfect ass to Hermione for a very long time. Ironically, Severus seems to have assumed that Hermione, the ultimate Gryffindor good girl, would stoop to Slytherin tactics to get what she wanted. And if Severus was capable of stepping back and taking a cool, logical, objective look at Hermione's actions and his interpretation of it, he would surely see how totally irrational he has been when it comes to her. Unfortunately, he seems to be entirely too sure of himself at this point to even consider the idea that he may have misjudged Hermione and her intentions.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
I think you're definitely seeing the situation a lot more clearly than he is right now. But his own self-interest now demands that he start treating her better, and he's got Lucius telling him he's off base, so perhaps that will lead him to reconsider some of his assumptions about her motives. Thanks for reviewing!
Great first few chapters. I like how you started the story at the end so to speak. How will Severus change her mind? Quite the puzzle.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Thank you! Glad you're enjoying the story, and its structure, so far. Severus is probably in for a surprise at how stubborn she can be ... Thanks for the review! :D
Blackmailing him. That's what he thinks she was doing? Now that I've seen it with my own eyes, I think he was tetched in the head. No, actually I haven't changed that opinion either.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
LOL, well, he's certainly got plenty of conviction, doesn't he? He's seeing things through the prism of his own history, which is distorting his view more than he yet realizes. Thanks for reviewing! :D
Severus didn't just step in it, he practically dove in headfirst and swam laps in it, didn't he? And all the roses in the world won't cover the stink once it gets out that he made it his mission in life to get rid of a beloved war heroine and top notch professor out of sheer pettiness and spite. After all the time Severus spent making Hermione's teaching life hell just because he was incapable of seeing anything past the labels he originally pasted on her: Harry Potter's Best Friend and Insufferable Gryffindor Know-It-All, he's going to have his work cut out for him if he does decide to take Lucius' advice because she's liable to be extremely suspicious of even mere civility on his part. As for Severus' claim that Hermione "blackmailed" him into hiring her, that makes no sense whatsoever. As Lucius pointed out, with so many schools chasing after her, Hermione had no need to blackmail anyone into giving her a job. I'm sure whatever Severus sees as blackmail is merely something his Slytherin mind twisted around to justify his campaign of unwarranted abuse.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Yes, Severus is apparently completely irrational where Hermione is concerned. He, of course, is quite certain he's right, though. But never fear, all shall be revealed. And we'll see if he's able to work his Slytherin wiles enough to bring her around. ;) Thanks for the review!
Oh dear. Severus seems downright delighted with the news of Hermione's imminent departure. And her note seems more than a bit abrupt, for Hermione. Which makes me wonder... what did Severus do to make her decide she had to go?
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
The next several chapters will gradually reveal how they got to this point in their relationship. Yes, Severus is delighted, and Hermione has given up on winning him over ... but things are about to go topsy-turvy. Thanks for reviewing! :D
Severus thinks Hermione blackmailed him to get her position? I hope to God that she sets him straight with at least one person witnessing the exchange - because with Snape, she's going to NEED that witness to cover her arse! And what is up with him anyway? He's not just snarky, he's become a total arsehole! I hope someone puts him in his place very soon!
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Yes, Severus is absolutely convinced Hermione blackmailed him. The reasons for both this belief and his behavior will become apparent in future chapters. ;) Thanks for the review!
Absolutely love the story, well written and plotted!!!
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it! :)
Snape's pleasure at reading Hermione's resignation begs the question 'why'?
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Why, indeed? He has his reasons, and he's absolutely positive they're sound. All shall be revealed! Thanks for commenting! :)
Enjoyed the scene with Hermione and Lucius-- and the revelation that Draco had had a crush on her, inappropriate or not! Lucius does seem to be playing an indirect (or not so indirect) matchmaker on one level wanting Severus and Hermione to have an honest understanding of each other-- great chapter!
Enjoyed Minerva and Hermione's scene, and love the letter from Hermione being read in front of Severus-- do I detect a wee bit of jealousy from him--that Hermione and Lucius are on 'first-name' basis? Like the touch that Malfoy has to point out Severus irrational behaviour in matters concerning Granger!
Love the repoire and banter between Neville and Hermione as colleagues ( I have a soft spot for Neville- hehe!) The subtle warming up of Severus to Hermione and his need for her knowledge and expertise, the revelation of the chelation therapy, and his contemplation for how to keep Hermione at Hogwarts are all overlapping to keep him in quite a state-- poor Severus, will Hermione have a change of heart? What will it take? She doesn't seem to be able to let her defences down (with good reason)...
Sev can avoid and get away from many things, but his own heavy thoughts is not one of them! Love the intervention of Lily!
Sweet story!! I always have a hard time with the Malfoys in a story, but this take was just right! Well done! Hugs~dee
I normally review at the end of a story, but this chapter was wonderful!! The interplay between Lily/Hermione and Severus was awesome! Choked me up...tissue please.
Loved Severus' inner dialogue. And I'm beginning to wonder if a bit of Dumbledore isn't possessing Lucius--the meddlesome part. Just don't have him start twinkling please.
he’d probably have made a great actor, had he been so inclined
<applaudes, tips hat>
Nice shout-out to Alan.
*sigh* It is very frustrating caring for someone who has had such a bad life that they can't even trust someone with good intentions. It can be overcome but does take a lot of work/time and moments will still arise when that mistrust stupidly rears its ugly head. (sounds like I speak from experience huh?)
Enjoying the story very much. Love the way Lucius is written--helpful but really to further his own ends.
