Severus has spent three years making Hermione's life as difficult as possible, in hopes that she'll resign her post and leave Hogwarts. When she does, however, he discovers that it's not in his best interest if she leaves, after all. Written for Musamihi for the 2011 SSHG Gift Exchange.

I'm a forty-something American woman who is addicted to the SSHG pairing, relatively new to this fandom. I'm also considering starting some original fiction soon...
Check out the story I co-wrote with Remarkable -- it's called "Hidden Attractions" and (as soon as it's through the queue) it's archived under the penname remarkable_linlawless.
For those who are interested, I've got two WIPs at my website (which I will eventually post here, but not until I have a complete draft). It's easy and free to join the website, so I hope you'll visit!
I am honored that my story, Witchy Woman, has been selected as a featured story for September 2010. Better yet, this honor came with the very awesome banner at the top of this post!
Here's a couple of banners my friend Atuliel made for the two WIPs at my website:
Reviews for On the Other Side of Hate
Wow ... an interesting look into his old hospital days. Seems there was more going on than we originally knew about. Great chapter!
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Thanks, glad you like it! Yeah, a lot happened back there ... :D
Boy, he buggered things up BIG time, but Hermione really shouldn't have feigned that she was Lily. I know, I know, he wasn't in his right mind at the time and perhaps it really wasn't time to do that....I almost wrote there were other ways to handle that, but how would one handle a sick and an emotionally fragile Severus Snape? Wow, she was really caught between a rock and a hard place.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Yeah, I think Hermione never intended him to know she had done that, and still assumes he has no idea. She just let her compassion for him get the best of her, and tried to give him comfort and a reason to live. It seems to have backfired in a major way ...
Well, Severis admitting to himself that he's been punishing Hermione because he erroneously interpreted her intentions is a start, at least. Then again, recognizing his error and actually regretting his treatment of her are two entirely different things and I don't think he's quite there yet. Snape's physical frailties, while a mitigating factor, neither excuse his behavior nor do they explain why Hermione has suffered the worst of his verbal abuse since she returned to Hogwarts. And since Severus hardly seems inclined to admit what really happened during that job interview, I imagine he's currently wracking his brain to come up with something plausible to explain his supposed change of heart. After all, Hermione may be exceptionally kindhearted and understanding, but she's far from stupid.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Yes, we have to be happy with baby steps from Severus. He's not anywhere near ready to rush ahead into friendship or anything yet. I agree, his health problems aren't really an excuse, but more of an explanation, or at least a partial explanation. They just magnified his worst tendencies, perhaps. I think he singled Hermione out because in his view, she had attacked first (in the perceived blackmail). It's definitely going to take work for him to get her to give him any sort of chance.
Lucius is playing with fire here. I don't doubt that he is trying to help, but he is verging on dangerous at moments. Still, whatever gets these two to reconcile is okay with me. I enjoy when it is a two-sided fight between these two, but times like these where it is sort of one-sided, it can get painful. Off to find out more ...
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Yep, I suspect Lucius was bored, so he's kind of manufacturing a plot to entertain himself. ;) We'll see how he does with this one ... :D
For such a smart man, Snape really has no clue, does he? I was amused that Hermione wrote to Lucius and Snape was there to witness it. What does he expect, really? I was appalled that he plans to be nice long enough to sign her to a contract, and then go back to his old ways. Still, at this point he will be lucky if she even consents to stay at all.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Yep, I've always viewed Snape as booksmart but people-clueless. Which sometimes describes Hermione, too, come to think of it. Yes, at this point, getting her to stay is far from a sure thing. I also think that Severus justifies things to himself in ways that are palatable to him, especially when he's uncomfortable with how he's feeling. So just because he's telling himself it's only until she signs, doesn't mean he won't realize he can't just go back to his previous behavior if he wants her to continue at Hogwarts for the long term.
I very much enjoyed seeing how annoyed Snape was at Hermione as she toyed with him during their meeting. Knowung Hermione, she'll give him a second chance, so hopefully this nice thing sticks.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Well, I think he's got more work to do to convince her than he might expect. She's not going to take him at his word again on the issue of starting fresh. She got burned too badly the last time. So the nice thing will have to stick, at least for a while. ;)
Boy, he is a mess. Maybe his dream will sort him out. It was fun to read, anyway. He has to be so darn stubborn all of the time and it never gets him anywhere. I wonder what it will take to set him straight?
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
The dream was fun to write, too! My view is that the way to set him straight is to sneak in when he's not looking and rearrange his world ... ;)
Severus still seems determined to hang on tooth and nail to the image he created of a scheming, manipulative Hermione despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary. If he's that wildly irrational, it makes one wonder what, if anything, could possibly induce him to even consider the slightest possibility that he might have (GASP!) incorrectly interpreted Hermione's words/intentions in that job interview. As for the rest, Lucius is right, Severus really has his work cut out for him if he hopes to have a prayer of convincing Hermione to stay on at Hogwarts. His upcoming stay at St. Mungo's will buy him a little time, but considering that more people are learning of Hermione's decision to leave the school, he's liable to catch hell the second he gets back. Especially should the wizarding press happen to get wind of Hermione's decision and the reason why.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Severus definitely has a tendency to hang on to his view of people, regardless of conflicting evidence that may show up later. But I like to think he can change when it's clear to him that it's in his best interest to do so. (Lucius wants me to point out that he's usually right -- except for that one time ...) ;)
I loved Lucius in this he was brilliantly written. The way you showed Hermione trying to work i could couldnt be better, but you are evil leving it there... I need more
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
I am evil, aren't I, leaving you hanging for two days like that. ;) Glad you are enjoying Lucius -- I think he's trying to steal the spotlight in this one. Thanks for reviewing! :)
I love the interaction in the entrance hall. It certainly changes your point of view and willingness to speak freely once you have nothing to lose.As for the whole blackmailing thing ... this guy's got issues!
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
You are soooo right, on both counts. :D :D Thanks for commenting!
Good grief! He is really serious about his grudge holding. He is sure in a tight spot though. What is he going to do? I hope if he grovels, she gives him hell anyway.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Yes, he's pretty Sirius ... er, serious with his grudges in canon, too, isn't he? This will probably be a growth experience for him -- and we all know how much fun those are. ;)
Lucius, Lucius, Lucius. Trying to play matchmaker with two people that hate each other. It might work out down the line, but in the meantime, he's dragging them kicking and screaming into something they might not want. How's that going to work out?
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
LOL, well, Lucius has never been one to concern himself with trivia (like what other people actually want). ;) Thanks for the review!
I love your work! I check snangerdanger and petulent poetess all the time to see if you posted anything new. I can't wait to read the rest!
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Thank you so much! What a lovely compliment! :) I'm trying to stick with daily updates on this one (though occasionally RL gets in the way). I'm also hoping for a big, giant chunk of writing time over the holidays, so stay tuned ...
Very good, not as funny as the last chapter but still amusing. I'm enjoying watching Severus rack his brain.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Hehe, glad you're still enjoying. Thanks for reviewing! :)
I just had to laugh, Severus's conversation with Lucius was pretty funny and I do believe Lucius hit the nail on the head.
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
LOL, glad you enjoyed that conversation. (Lucius says, "Of course I hit the nail on the head -- I'm very perceptive!") ;)
Personally I think they both need a smack up side the head. Yes I agree Severus treated her horrible thorugh the years, but once she "tendered" her resignation she shouldn't be acting like an arse just because she knows she can get a job anywheres she wants, if thats the case she should start making inquires before her contract expires that would make Severus work harder to try and get her to stay. hope Lucius can shed some light to her about it. Happy he did decided to take the treatmeant the stubborn man. Just my opinion even if nobody else agrees. On that note I do like the story very much :)
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
On the one hand, I agree that Hermione probably ought to rein in her desire to provoke him, but on the other hand, I think she's probably just tired of biting her tongue after all this time. So hopefully her behavior is understandable. I prefer characters who are flawed in a way that makes sense over characters who always do the right thing -- the latter type are just not very interesting to me. So I'm taking the fact that you think they *both* need a smack as an indication that I'm doing something right. Anyway, thanks for the review, and I hope you continue to enjoy the story as it progresses. :)
you can't leave it there!! that's cruel....
I am longing to see Severu's face when he realises how wrong he's been about her...Lucius was perfect
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Don't worry, I plan to post the next chapter later today. Glad you're enjoying Lucius, and I hope your mental picture of Severus at that moment matches mine (although I'm sure he'd be trying not to let him realization show in his expression). Thank you for reviewing! :)
Do you have a bullwhip? (Says loudly to all readers): "Does anybody have a bullwhip?" Okay. No bullwhip available. Resorting to mom's old tactics, now...Can I string him up by his toenails? Oh! I forgot - "LEVICORPUS!" (Yells to Sev): "And you can stay there until you come to your senses and admit you're a complete idiot!"
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
LMAO! The good news is, with Lucius working on him and his own self-interest relying on his ability to see Hermione differently, he can't remain an idiot for *too* long. (we hope.) ;) Thanks for reviewing. :D
I had been so busy, and time had been hard to manage. Alas this is not a valid excuse for my missing this gem of a story. I was so delighted to find it there, having skipped over it a time before. Please forgive me. I was so mesmerized that I bounded through it without leaving feed back to the previous chapters. I am all caught up, and ready for more. I will go back, and re-read since I sped through. I may have missed a succulent morsel! *giggle*Thank you for sharing~

Consider yourself forgiven! ;) (I'm a cheap date -- one lovely review and all is well!). I am delighted that you found my story and are enjoying it so far. Hope it continues to please! :) Thank you for reviewing! :D
Oh, dear! What must he have done to her? Off to find out ...
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Hehehe, well, I think of it as the culmination of years rather than a specific big thing. Kind of a last straw situation ... Thanks for reviewing! :)
Enjoying how clueless Snape seems to be at the moment. Seems like it would take a miracle for him realize he might actually like Hermione. Is it possible the treatment could be that miracle? May need one vice versa also (for Hermione to think about liking him). Lots of bad blood to traverse. Thanks for writing!
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Glad you're enjoying the story so far. They definitely both have a long way to go before they'd be able to like each other. Hopefully, the progression will make sense along the way. Thanks for reviewing! :)
I feel like the portraits.what good can it be when he-who-has-not-smiled actually laughs. *shivers*
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
LOL so true! Thanks for reviewing! :D
Well, we shall see how it goes at the hospital. Will the new and improved manners win out or will Severus set a new record for being difficult?
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
Good question. We shall see, and relatively soon, too! :)
I didn't know about the lead thingy. I grew up in an old house, and I suspect I used to chew on lead paint bubbles all the time. I guess if you don't show symptoms nobody questions it. Well, I don't know if it had lead in it, but I suspect it did. Oh, well. I'm not dead so it mustn't have bothered me too much. Severus was almost too nice to Hermione. No wonder she put up as thick of a defense as she did! I would have too. I am proud of her for not biting her tounge, too. It probably is actually reflecting on Snape quite well that she's not a total pushover with this treatment. I'm sure before she'd resigned that she'd been totally polite and respectful, but all bets are off now. I can only hope that Snape owes her one for at least letting him know about the Chelation therapy. I hope it works and leeches some of his snarkiness out of him!
Response from linlawless (Author of On the Other Side of Hate)
In small amounts, lead isn't a problem. In larger amounts, it can cause brain damage and lasting cognitive deficits in babies and young children, so these days, lead paint is illegal in most if not all of the U.S., and doctors routinely test lead levels in babies and young children. If the level is above a certain threshold, they do chelation therapy to remove it from the child's system quickly. I believe they also use chelation therapy if a child overdoses on iron (though I could be wrong). Severus is seriously underestimating Hermione at this point, I think. He still thinks all he has to do is be nice to her for a little while, and she'll be thrilled to stay at Hogwarts. I think he's in for a surprise at how hard he's going to have to work to get her to even consider it, though. Thanks for reviewing! :)
