Reviews for Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory
I'm really enjoying this! I actually like a fanfic where Hermione isn't SuperWoman able to fix everything. And in DH she (or JKR) too blithely eradicated her parents' memories and sent them on their merry way. I look forward to seeing how you develop this. (I love how you are portraying Teddy as well!)
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Thanks so much! Yes, I always wonder why we get these Hermiones who can do anything and solve any problem with little to no effort. (We know she's a clever girl, but there's no reason why absolutely everything should line up for her perfectly... it doesn't for anyone else!)
I love that Hermione became a doctor and now she needs Snape. I'm on tenterhooks.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
I loved the scene in OoTP where she and Ron discuss Muggle medicine. His thoughts on the subject are hilarious. There's a part of me that thinks she would have started wondering then what each side of the Muggle/Magical divide could bring to the other, even if most wizards think doctors are 'nutters who sew people up.'
This is a great story. I'm curious as to what direction Hermione's research can lead and who it could help. Hmm and just what has Severus been up to all these years. You still haven't said what house Teddy was sorted into, I don't want to make any assumptions.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Harry gives two clues when he talks about Teddy's letter: he's in the house of one of his parents and he's in one of the houses that's smaller this year because of what happened...
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
(I think I got too clever for myself with that one, but I'll have Harry confirm it for everyone next chapter just to be safe!)
A good start. I'm wondering what that hat is up to.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Thanks for reading! Yes, the Hat seems like it's up to no good, doesn't it?
Thanks for a story where memory manipulation is not childs' play!! I love to read that Hermione's parents are lost to her--this was such a low blow in DH. Why is Occluding forbidden in AUS? There's no harm, or is there? Obviously there cannot be systematic Occlumency training, but it's absurd to forbid it as no one can prove violation without using an Unforgivable curse. Teddy is either a proud Hufflepuff or possibly a Slytherin, although by the calm reaction from everyone, the latter isn't likely. The discussion certainly circled around three houses and straightened a few things. But there are four houses! Andromeda could possibly have provided the one admirable trait in Sytherins here? The way Harry speaks of Snape, he's a lot slower than the canon Harry in accepting the man. It is, of course, easier with a dead person, they don't bite back.

There are all of these instances in HP where things just 'magically' work out for some people and don't for others - particularly when they do something drastic to protect the ones they love. (Severus fails with Lily, of course, and Harry with Sirius, but Hermione's parents are swept aside as they always are in canon.) JKR never really gives a reason other than that it's a necessary plot device, but it's interesting to see how she essentially orphans Hermione throughout the series. As for Occlumency? Harry asks the same question at the start of the next chapter (and also discusses Severus a bit more). And talking of only Hufflepuff? They're at a gathering with lots of Gryffindors, plus one Ravenclaw (Luna), one Hufflepuff (Susan) and one parent of a Hufflepuff (Andromeda)... it seems more likely that they felt it necessary to address the Hufflepuff issue than hitting everything. Something tells me that the conversation would have gone differently had a Slytherin been present! And Teddy's house? Harry gave two clues: it's the house of one of Teddy's parents and it's one of the smaller houses this year...that should narrow it down to the right one!
Thank you so much for the update. A very well written chapter that really deepens the plot. I do so agree with Bill assessment of Neville would have done Huffelpuff proud, that was very well presented. I wonder, will Harry still carry grugdes towards Severus or has he grown wiser by the years?
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Yes, house is certainly more complicated than the bravery/intelligence/hard work/cunning divide. As for Harry, he has more to say on Severus in the next chapter!
She's quite accomplished. Hopefully with this extra bit of magic, she can find the cure.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
We always knew she was a clever girl... a bit of magic and a new perspective may just do the trick. Or maybe not.
Hi! Welcome here as well!
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Thank you for inviting me!
Hmmm...has there been a slow-working curse on the Sorthing Hat? Does it deliberately impede other houses so that it favors Gryffindor? And why does it "put down" the other houses? How long has its bias been going on? Why is it favoring Gryffindor? And what does this all have to do with Snape???So many questions yet to be answered!
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
All excellent questions, most of which will remain unanswered for quite awhile! (Although remembering the Hat's former owner will provide a partial answer while waiting for the others...)
I loved this welcome feast. Familiar, and yet with a new touch. Teddy as a small celebrity? Hm, yes he's the eldest of the lot. Horace is a disgrace for his house, I dare say--no matter if you are a pureblood-fanatic or a liberal, open mind. Sprout losing it, was great to read. Bill has never listened.. ah well, that figures! While I consider him the most un-biased Weasley, he still is a Weasley.Of course I'd have MUCH preferred knowing in what house Teddy was sorted but I'll survive a week or even two.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Thanks! Who doesn't want to experience a feast, Hogwarts style? Teddy's house will be disclosed in the next chapter, and I must say I love the thought of Sprout strangling the Hat! As for the song the hat sings here, it's really only a bit stronger in tone than some of the songs it sang in canon. I don't begrudge Bill not listening carefully as a child, but the professors are another story. No character ever really questions the Sorting Hat in the series... and the only comments from the adults on houses and Sorting are often quite revealing (Albus commenting to Severus about how "we sort too soon," for example, makes it pretty clear what he thinks of Slytherin). Who's the biased one?
Response from Bettina (Reviewer)
Yes, that was gross of A.D. There have to be virtues in every house! I think M.M.'s intro before Harry's sorting wasn't all too bad. Yours here wasn't biased either. But yeah, the hat definitely is!Sorting 11year olds according to character is just horrid, as many kids this age will strive to fulfil expectations--pretty much any that you set into them. This is why this sorting works as a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Your last phrase - 'self-fulfilling prophecy' - is SPOT ON.
What a fantastic start. Well Writen, well paced, and beautiful imagery. I can't wait to see how you develope this, I'm REALLY looking forward to the next chapter.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Thanks so much!
The hat wants to retire?
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
...Or it just needs a performance review?
Very intriguing start! I notice that you didn't mention into which house Teddy was sorted. And what is up with the Sorting Hat? Is it repeating Godric's ideas? Very much looking forward to more!
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Oh, there'll be enough of a hint of Teddy's house in the next chapter. As for the Sorting Hat? The song it wrote this year was really only a bit stronger than in previous years, but the fact that it was Godric's could potentially be quite important.
I'm such a fan of this story. The dialogue is so well written and engrossing. I hope there is an update very soon!
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Thanks so much,

. I'll be back to regular posting in about a week or so (and then there's the queue, so it'll probably be a bit longer, depending on how many stories are in line). I didn't think I'd need a break when I started the drabble competition here eight weeks ago, but it was exhausting to have to come up with something completely new each week. If you've never read drabbles before, you should check them out! About two dozen writers wrote about 90 small pieces in the last two months, and they're just fabulous.
Progress!! Silent, but good.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
It only took them a month to get there... stubborn, very stubborn.
She's learning slowly, isn't she?
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
At least she finally stopped defending herself... she's getting there!
The little note he left her is so... So.... Snape.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
He's not a mincer of words!
I do love the interactions, especially Neville and Draco, but Snape is quite the character.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Thanks! Yes, Severus has learned to be quite cautious when necessary.
I like the interaction between your characters. You show maturity does come eventually to all (except maybe George *grin*). Snape is taking his time and allowing Hermione to get used to him once again. And he even gives her homework! ^_^
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Shhh... don't tell Fred, but George was always my favourite Weasley twin. It was the already popular, Quidditch playing George who offered to help an awkward, scruffy first year with his trunk on the Hogwarts Express – before he ever saw the scar and knew he was Harry Potter.
Yay for positive interaction! Your malfoy library is very close to the one in my head, lucky Hermione. George's Halloween prank was adorable.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
I'm a sucker for beautiful libraries. The particular furnishings are all different in my mind, but the skeleton of the library as I imagine it is my favourite 'chateau' library - the one at the Biltmore Estate in the US. It's got the open two stories, the perimeter balcony, the dark wood, the Scottish painting above the fireplace, and - best of all - spiral staircases to the second level.(And to have a Snape inside it, well, that's just the icing on the cake...)
Severus is back to teaching her! YAY for Hermione! I guess those couple of weeks when he was there in the library doing his own thing was really a twofold reason. First being just to observe her, and second, to get her used to his presence again. Very smart of him, by the way.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
He is quite a clever fellow...
It is always a trill to find a new update to this story, the quality in writing together with a great plot makes this a joy to read!
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Thanks so much! I still get quite nervous with this whole endeavor, since this is my first story, but I'm glad to know you're enjoying it!
I'm so happy that after proving she is not a raving maniac after all, Severus is still willing to help her.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
He doesn't do well with overly emotional types, but I think he more than almost anyone knows what crazy feels like. He might not be warm and fuzzy, but Hermione's right – he's not a bad fellow. And in time... well... who knows?
Well DUH Hermione! I am really enjoying the banter between her and Draco. I do hope they end up as good friends too.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Our Hermione tends to forget the obvious when she's distraught! (i.e. "Are you a witch or not?!")...and I think you'll be pleased.
I should not be surprised that the meeting tanked. Oh my.
Response from ofankoma (Author of Ars memoriae, or The Art of Memory)
Well... no. Nope, I'm not really, either.
