Rose of the WestEven the Christmas Holiday is not immune from the Dark Lord.

Hermione was just about ready to leave when the summons came. Septima saw the look in her husband's eye and knew what had happened. “How can you go now?” she whispered.
“I can't not go. You know that.”
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She didn't want to upset Hermione's last moments with them. “I'll be waiting for you.”
He kissed her cheek as he walked toward the door. “I'm counting on that.”
Likewise, Septima forced herself to be calm as she walked Hermione to a quiet spot near by. “I hope Arthur is all right,” Septima said.
“I'm worried about Harry, if he's the one who raised the alarm. He has these episodes...” Hermione seemed reluctant to say any more.
Septima held her wand and raised her arm. The Knight Bus would arrive in just a few seconds. “It's better if they don't see me. Here's what you need for the fare. Maybe we'll see each other, certainly when classes start again...”
There was a loud banging noise, and the bus hove into view. Septima took a step backwards and pulled her hood over her head to hide her face. She waved goodbye as another banging sound took the bus and her daughter away from her.
Septima took Nicky to the apartment and spent the afternoon worrying about her two missing family members. Around six-thirty, she received a note. Arrived safely; no one is in danger any more, although things are still tense. HG. She could be relieved at least that much, then. There was no note from wherever Severus had been summoned.
Nicky had his dinner but Septima couldn't eat a bite. She didn't know why she was so nervous over Severus, but if Arthur Weasley could be attacked, she feared what others might suffer. Nicky was surprisingly sweet to bathe. Septima gave him his bedtime nursing, the only one he still took every day, and put him in his cot. He looked like Severus and yet sweet and innocent as well. She delighted in him even as she fretted over his father.
There was no point in trying to sleep. She sat in the lounge and watched the clock tick. At close to nine, something heavy slumped against the door. She ran and pulled it open. Severus fell over the threshold and muttered. “Never open the door without checking...”
She knelt beside him. “Don't be an idiot. Can you walk if I hold you?”
He grunted in assent, so she brought him to their bedroom and started working at the fastenings of his clothes.
“What did they do?” she asked, although she could see the markings made by various spells all over him. Fortunately they were all ones she recognized. She feared the day when the small skills taught to her by Poppy would not suffice, but so far the Dark Lord was not particularly inventive. She helped him as well as she could and then lay down next to him in the bed. She held him in her arms and said, “I don't understand why he would hurt you so much, when he needs you.”
“He was furious to discover that there's a connection between himself and Potter. It would have helped him if Arthur had been discovered by the Ministry instead of rescued by the Order. Somehow, the boy knew what was happening, and sounded an alarm.”
Severus was shivering too hard to talk about it, so Septima simply did what she had learned to do. Using her hands and mouth, and eventually her body, she loved and warmed him, until he sighed in something like contentment. “Ah, wife, only you can truly help me.”
“I'm still not sure I understand why.”
“I'm still trying to understand it, myself. I know that somehow you have a part of me within you and that there's a part of you in me. The Cruciatus makes me lose or forget my soul somehow, but by coming to you, I can find myself.”
* * * * *
The Christmas Holidays continued with less drama. The attack at the Ministry was discussed by Order members, and there was still concern over the Healers' inability to heal Arthur's wounds. Severus spent long afternoons discussing the connection between Harry Potter and Lord Voldemort.
He came back to the apartment just as Septima was packing to return to Hogwarts for the spring term, his face clouded with annoyance. “I'm supposed to teach the prat Occlumency, now.”
“Why doesn't he do it, himself?”
“There's a risk that Harry, and the Dark Lord through Harry, could see the inner workings of Dumbledore's mind.”
“Doesn't that same risk exist if you do it?”
“Apparently the workings of my mind are less important to the Order.”
“I'm not sure I follow that logic.”
“Yet there it is. I'm supposed to go to headquarters and set it up now.”
“Shall I come with you?”
His response was to hold out his hand.
After an uncomfortable but short discussion with Sirius, Septima was sent up to the study while Severus went to the kitchen. A few minutes later, Hermione came down. “I had wondered if you might be here when Mrs. Weasley said Professor Snape was in the kitchen to speak with Harry.”
Hermione looked expectantly at Septima, but it wasn't her story to tell. “How was your holiday?”
“There've been good parts, and bad parts. I think coming here was the right thing to do.”
“So it's going well?” She saw a couple of scrolls in Hermione's hand. “What do you have there?”
The girl sat down and handed them over. “I don't know what to think.”
Septima glanced over what were obviously letters from Viktor Krum. She did not read them, preferring to get the story from her daughter. “What did he say?”
“He talks of the coming war, and of his ideas that everyone should be free to learn the magic they carry, but I don't know. Ron points out that he's a student of Durmstrang.”
“You know Viktor better.”
“I thought I did. That's what I told Ron, to shut him up...”
“But?”
“I can't get what I saw out of my mind. His hand was right on the one girl's bum!”
Septima smiled and shook her head. “You said he had each arm around a girl and a third in his lap. How could one of his hands be on her bum?”
The girl looked flustered then. “Maybe not, but he was still with all those girls!”
“What did he say about that?”
“I—I couldn't ask.” Hermione turned bright red and looked away.
Septima gave her a quick hug, no more than a concerned professor might, and said, “Perhaps it's best to ignore all that. Perhaps you should separate the two things from your mind.”
“Do you think he means what he says, that should there be a war, he will help?”
“How did he behave when he was here? How did he treat you, thinking that you're a Muggle-born?”
“He didn't say much about it at all. He just told me that he thought I was one of the smartest witches he ever met.”
“And? What does that tell you?”
Hermione frowned. “You're turning it into a maths problem.”
“I'm a maths teacher.” Hermione looked up, and both witches suddenly laughed.
Ron poked his head in the door. “Dad's here! I saw him out the window with Bill and Charlie! He must be healed, Hermione!” Hermione glanced quickly at Septima, who nodded her head toward the door. Hermione joined Ron and he walked down the hall.
Septima followed the procession that formed and went toward the kitchen, but at a slower pace. If the Weasleys were reunited, there would be a celebration, and she and Severus wouldn't be wanted, at least not for long. Sure enough, Severus swept through the kitchen door and only stopped when it shut behind him. He stopped, snapped his robe into place, and took her hand, squeezing it a little too tightly. The ring he had just given her dug into her finger.
“The boy is encouraged in his ingratitude by that mangy—” He stopped himself and kissed the hand he held. “Let's retrieve our own son from his grandmother and enjoy our last evening to ourselves, shall we?”
Septima smiled. “Let's.”

I found this story on random and unfortunately got into it before I realized it hadn't been finished. I've enjoyed the pairing and the artful way in which you weave in and out of canon. I'm so sorry you've abandoned this tale - I would have liked to have seen how you would have handled the remainder of the story.
Just digging through my WIPs and noticed that you haven't surfaced in awhile. I hope everything is okay, and that you are going to continue this. I miss you.

Thank you so much for asking about this! It's a full year since I wrote the chapter last posted for this story. My beta reader got sick, and then I got distracted by other things. I'm sorry about that. I know exactly what's supposed to happen next; I just need to write it. Let me see what I can do.

Don't know how I missed this update. I like the twists this story is taking with canon. Of course, things aren't going to be smooth for them for a long time, if ever.

Please write more!!! I actually have a Septima Vector (the only) Twitter account. Some of the ways you see her and Snape and the intellectual part of their relationship is so close to how I see it as well. Very fun to read!

Fortunately Hermione is smart and sensible, because it must be difficult to have to treat and be treated by your parents as if you are teacher and student. I am sure she can understand and play along, but still, it would be tough. If Severus was smart, he would teach occlumency to Hermione, who could in turn teach Harry :)

My favorite part of the chapter was Hermione spying on her parents. What a Harry thing to do, LOL! But, it makes you wish that they could see themselves through her eyes. I think after while you start to miss the subtle nuances in your relationship, or maybe they've never noticed because there is so much baggage with their relationship. Perhaps the Snapes need a trip into the pensieve. Nice chapter.

It was time to bring in Hermione's POV, but yes, that's exactly what I was hoping for, here. We've gotten so much of what they're thinking and feeling, but they can't see some of the things that are visible from the outside. Thank you so much for your review!

These two are so compatible in most all things, and yet, there is a sort of disconnect when it comes to their relationship. Lily is always hanging there betweem them, keeping Severus from knowing he loves Septima, and keeping her from feeling worthy of his love. But still, they remain together. I wonder what will finally bring them together completely?

Yet now with the whole Lily thing understood, things are starting to even out. There are still a couple of canon secrets from Septima that have an effect on them as a couple. Yet now with the whole Lily thing understood, things are starting to even out. There are still a couple of canon secrets from Septima that have an effect on them as a couple. We'll discover them eventually.
That didn't go well. It could have been much worse of course, but it wasn't pretty either. But, I am glad that Septima said the things that she did. She needs to get it out, and let him know how she feels. And, not succumb to his request to come to bed with him. Of course, it was surely good for him, too. If they can just stay the course and continue to communicate- good, bad, or otherwise- I think that things just might work out.

Thank you for the review! I think they needed a chance to have the whole thing out. She's been so afraid of his temper and of losing him over the course of their relationship, and now she's finally shed that worry and can say what she thinks, even though it's in the back of her mind that maybe she's pushing him too far.

I'm a little surprised that he shared so willingly. And didn't sugar coat it. There is hope yet. Damn Lily and her carelessness with men's hearts (and other parts, apparently, LOL).

Oh, dear. She heard a lot in a short conversation. Fortunately, Severus didn't hear it. I wonder if she will share any of it with him, or ask about Lily. That was possibly the worst part of the conversation. These two really need to have a heart to heart so they know where each other stands.

Horses ... centaurs ... she'll figure it out eventually, LOL.I like how Hermione scolds Severus and then hugs him before running off all in a short span of time.Things are a little tense betweem Septima and Severus, huh? I do hope they can both figure themselves out, and therefore, be more available emotionally to one another. The physical side of things ... I think they've got that part worked out already. ;)

What a sweet little chapter. Septima does have a right to a life outside of her family, and if she bows down to everyone else's needs all of the time, she will lose herself entirely. That is a good sign for her.I loved the nice family feel to the scene she witnessed between her children. It was sweet as can be, and though she felt a little jealous, it seems she can see the goodness in it, as well.

It can be a bit complicated to sort out motherhood along with the other things the mother actually wants in her life. It's a bit of a mid-life crisis, to realize some things aren't feasible, others may need to be postponed, while other things are lovely here and now. She'll figure it out. ;) I love watching siblings interact, especially when they don't realize their mum is watching. They can form such a bond together, hopefully not against the parents!Thanks so much!

Severus' daughter is good with words; it must be in the genes. "Shamefully" is spot-on. I like how actively she builds up her relationship with him, even manhandling him. Excellent thinking, too, that Severus fed Hermione the idea for D.A. Yes, well, women surely are difficult ... next the old meddler will tell Severus that men are anyhow the better partners.However, why he seems to enjoy Umbrige's meddling is not clear to me. Does he try to aggravate Severus in yet another way?

I'm glad she's finally looking to her own interests. That is important in a relationship. However, she's been bottled up so long, I fear more of the same will be coming out of her mouth.

Excellent! Septima sends them away, and they find--family life! And they manage hermione's problems without her, too! Yes, she has a right to this--as much as her family has. 
A win-win-win-win situation; let's hope Septima sees it that way too.

Leaving Septima alone with Dumbledore is always dangerous, even if the harm isn't physical.Yay for the return of the chalkboard!I thought it was interesting that when Septime made the comment about him being on both the giving and receiving end of rejection and humiliation, he automatically thinks about Lily, but not about Septima. Does he have any clue how he sometimes makes her feel? I mean he is very, very good to her, and I don't think he has bad intentions, but he is still not 100% committed to her, and in the end, that is what she needs and deserves.

What a nice talk Septima and Remus had. I am glad that past events didn't sour their friendship.And Sirius putting the moves on her made me giggle. Then Snape burst in and snatched her away, and while he made an obnoxious comment about Sirius' house (which also made me giggle) there was no fighting between the two which was a relief. There is enough tension as it is with Dumbledore around.

Thank you! I think Remus and Septima see each other as veterans from the same battle. I've always pictured Sirius as a perpetual young adult male on the make, so he would consider any presentable female to be fair game. Isn't it wonderful that Snape can make a neutral comment obnoxious just with a shrug and wave of his hand? I love that about him.

LOL! Sirius is mostly harmless. I don't think he knows a proper way to be in public after all that time in Azkaban and on the run. I think you're right, too. Severus seems to have everything Sirius doesn't have right now.
