It was necessary to put in an appearance at dinner. It wasn't hard to shrug and give the impression that the witch was too tired to come to the Great Hall to eat. After that, he went back to his quarters to put some things together to take back to his mother's house. While he was there, he poured himself a drink.
There was a knock on the door. Was it Dumbledore? Had the time come to pay the piper? It wouldn't be as much fun as he had planned, but it was almost the time he had planned to admit everything, anyhow. The old man couldn't do much damage now.
It wasn't Dumbledore. The person standing in the doorway was a somewhat subdued Hermione Granger. “Professor Snape! I was hoping to see Professor Vector. I thought...” she trailed off awkwardly.
“We share this lounge, Miss Granger, but Professor Vector is away today. Is there something you need?”
She looked up at him just as Septima did when she desperately wanted to know something but was afraid to ask.
“It's all right, Miss Granger. As it happens, I'm in a particularly ebullient mood today.”
“I don't know how to ask this question of anyone else. Just how close are you and Professor Vector?”
“Close enough that we share far more secrets than there are secrets between us.”
It took her a moment to digest what he said. Finally she said, “Well, may I come in and sit down?”
“Certainly.” His arm swept wide and he stood back to allow her access. It was hard not to laugh as she first sat in his chair and then shook her head, instead choosing a spot on the sofa that Septima claimed was the most comfortable in the room.
She stared at her hands for several moments while Severus started to get nervous. What could be the problem? Had Krum—or anyone else—tampered with her? A flash of rage went through him.
“I had a short visit with my parents after the Yule Ball,” she finally blurted out.
“That must have been pleasant,” he said.
“It was, but it was also so very odd. They told me that they had been approached to adopt a baby boy who was magical.”
It was hard to breathe with her so close to a question that occupied much of his thoughts. “And?” he asked quietly.
“They've signed all the paperwork. It's just waiting for the birth certificate and the mother's final signature after he's born in late February or early March.”
Severus closed his eyes. Dumbledore had made fast work of stealing Septima's baby. He ironically thought to himself that it was almost as if he already knew the process. “You don't want a brother?”
“Oh, no, I'm happy enough, I guess, but the whole thing didn't sit well. I asked some questions, and it came out that I was adopted. My parents—the Grangers, that is—were told that the baby is my half-brother.”
He said nothing, but rather Summoned a glass and put some water in it. She took it, sipped from it a little, and then held it in both of her hands.
“I had no idea, and when I came back, I wanted to talk it over with Professor Vector, but she never seems to have time for that sort of thing these days. I miss talking to her.”
“She's been under a great deal of strain lately. I'm sure she misses talking to you, too. She's just been very preoccupied lately and does very little outside of teaching you lot and grading your essays.”
“It's all I've been thinking about for almost a month. It's as though I can pick a mum out of the whole magical world, and the person I want to talk it over with has been distant to me. Last week, Pansy made a crack in the hallway about how Professor Vector's been walking like a pregnant cow lately, and I wondered about it.”
“Oh?” It echoed hollowly in his ears, but she was in her own train of thought.
“What if Professor Vector is pregnant? Is she hiding the pregnancy? What would she do with the baby? Would she put it up for adoption?”
Severus closed his eyes and took a deep breath. Hermione looked at him and asked, “If I could pick any witch I knew for my mum, it would be her, but then if she is, why would she get rid of me like that? She seems to like me as much as I like her, but if she gave me up, it changes everything.”
He might have found some sophistry to mislead her, but in his own confusion, he answered the last question first. “You have to understand how it was,” he said.
Hermione looked a little shocked. “Are you saying she is? How could she never tell me?”
He shook his head. “It's not like that; it was never like that. You were coerced or perhaps even stolen from her. Then she was put under a memory charm or potion and told that she had miscarried you. Any thought of you beyond a superficial one causes her great unease. Whenever she gets close to the truth, she becomes very nervous and upset.”
“So she doesn't know?”
He stood up and fixed himself another drink. “She's aware of it, now.”
When he turned to sit back down, he realized she was staring at him intently. “How do you know?”
“I was there at the beginning, and then I recognized you the moment I saw you.”
“I don't understand how a mother could be forced to give up her child.”
“She didn't have a lot of options after I abandoned her.”
Suddenly he realized that Hermione had not yet considered that part of the equation. She looked at him and really saw him for the first time ever. “You?”
He nodded. “Yes.”
“But you're—”
He nodded again. “That's exactly what I thought. I had other things going in my life and no time for Septima or her child.”
“So you just left her?”
He sighed. “Settling down with your mother was just too pat. I wasn't ready for that scene, and there was another witch.”
She looked slightly ill. “A few weeks ago, I had parents who love me. Now I have a father who abandoned my mother and a mother who doesn't even remember me.”
“She does remember you.”
“You just said that she doesn't.”
“Wait just a minute.” He got up and went into Septima's bedroom, where he got several scrolls. He put them on the coffee table in front of his daughter. “This is just a sample. She's been doing this since the day she left the hospital after having you, often several times a week, but never more than a month apart.”
Hermione opened what appeared to be the oldest and read it. “What does this rune mean?” she asked.
“That's your name,” he said. “She called you Renée.”
She looked through the others in front of her. “They all say I'm doing well.”
“She thought she was going mad, that her art was making fun of her. She never asked where you were or whether you might be alive.”
“Why not?”
“She couldn't bear it... Until I forced her on the day you had that altercation with Malfoy and his friends.”
“Why hasn't she said anything since then? Why has she been so distant to me?”
“She wasn't sure how to approach it, and although now she has an intellectual knowledge, she doesn't have the emotional attachment she wishes for. She's terrified of being a bad mother.”
“But she's completely frozen me out!”
“She's been exhausted the last few weeks. It turns out that Miss Parkinson is right. Your mother gave birth to your younger brother early this morning.”

I found this story on random and unfortunately got into it before I realized it hadn't been finished. I've enjoyed the pairing and the artful way in which you weave in and out of canon. I'm so sorry you've abandoned this tale - I would have liked to have seen how you would have handled the remainder of the story.
Just digging through my WIPs and noticed that you haven't surfaced in awhile. I hope everything is okay, and that you are going to continue this. I miss you.

Thank you so much for asking about this! It's a full year since I wrote the chapter last posted for this story. My beta reader got sick, and then I got distracted by other things. I'm sorry about that. I know exactly what's supposed to happen next; I just need to write it. Let me see what I can do.

Don't know how I missed this update. I like the twists this story is taking with canon. Of course, things aren't going to be smooth for them for a long time, if ever.

Please write more!!! I actually have a Septima Vector (the only) Twitter account. Some of the ways you see her and Snape and the intellectual part of their relationship is so close to how I see it as well. Very fun to read!

Fortunately Hermione is smart and sensible, because it must be difficult to have to treat and be treated by your parents as if you are teacher and student. I am sure she can understand and play along, but still, it would be tough. If Severus was smart, he would teach occlumency to Hermione, who could in turn teach Harry :)

My favorite part of the chapter was Hermione spying on her parents. What a Harry thing to do, LOL! But, it makes you wish that they could see themselves through her eyes. I think after while you start to miss the subtle nuances in your relationship, or maybe they've never noticed because there is so much baggage with their relationship. Perhaps the Snapes need a trip into the pensieve. Nice chapter.

It was time to bring in Hermione's POV, but yes, that's exactly what I was hoping for, here. We've gotten so much of what they're thinking and feeling, but they can't see some of the things that are visible from the outside. Thank you so much for your review!

These two are so compatible in most all things, and yet, there is a sort of disconnect when it comes to their relationship. Lily is always hanging there betweem them, keeping Severus from knowing he loves Septima, and keeping her from feeling worthy of his love. But still, they remain together. I wonder what will finally bring them together completely?

Thank you, again! Yes, he's still got the idea that love has to hurt, and Septima is finally giving him a dose of uncertainty, but that's not necessarily good either. Yet now with the whole Lily thing understood, things are starting to even out. There are still a couple of canon secrets from Septima that have an effect on them as a couple. We'll discover them eventually.

That didn't go well. It could have been much worse of course, but it wasn't pretty either. But, I am glad that Septima said the things that she did. She needs to get it out, and let him know how she feels. And, not succumb to his request to come to bed with him. Of course, it was surely good for him, too. If they can just stay the course and continue to communicate- good, bad, or otherwise- I think that things just might work out.

Thank you for the review! I think they needed a chance to have the whole thing out. She's been so afraid of his temper and of losing him over the course of their relationship, and now she's finally shed that worry and can say what she thinks, even though it's in the back of her mind that maybe she's pushing him too far.

I'm a little surprised that he shared so willingly. And didn't sugar coat it. There is hope yet. Damn Lily and her carelessness with men's hearts (and other parts, apparently, LOL).

Oh, dear. She heard a lot in a short conversation. Fortunately, Severus didn't hear it. I wonder if she will share any of it with him, or ask about Lily. That was possibly the worst part of the conversation. These two really need to have a heart to heart so they know where each other stands.

Horses ... centaurs ... she'll figure it out eventually, LOL.I like how Hermione scolds Severus and then hugs him before running off all in a short span of time.Things are a little tense betweem Septima and Severus, huh? I do hope they can both figure themselves out, and therefore, be more available emotionally to one another. The physical side of things ... I think they've got that part worked out already. ;)

What a sweet little chapter. Septima does have a right to a life outside of her family, and if she bows down to everyone else's needs all of the time, she will lose herself entirely. That is a good sign for her.I loved the nice family feel to the scene she witnessed between her children. It was sweet as can be, and though she felt a little jealous, it seems she can see the goodness in it, as well.

It's a bit of a mid-life crisis, to realize some things aren't feasible, others may need to be postponed, while other things are lovely here and now. She'll figure it out. ;) I love watching siblings interact, especially when they don't realize their mum is watching. They can form such a bond together, hopefully not against the parents!Thanks so much!

Severus' daughter is good with words; it must be in the genes. "Shamefully" is spot-on. I like how actively she builds up her relationship with him, even manhandling him. Excellent thinking, too, that Severus fed Hermione the idea for D.A. Yes, well, women surely are difficult ... next the old meddler will tell Severus that men are anyhow the better partners.However, why he seems to enjoy Umbrige's meddling is not clear to me. Does he try to aggravate Severus in yet another way?

I'm glad she's finally looking to her own interests. That is important in a relationship. However, she's been bottled up so long, I fear more of the same will be coming out of her mouth.

Excellent! Septima sends them away, and they find--family life! And they manage hermione's problems without her, too! Yes, she has a right to this--as much as her family has. 
A win-win-win-win situation; let's hope Septima sees it that way too.

Leaving Septima alone with Dumbledore is always dangerous, even if the harm isn't physical.Yay for the return of the chalkboard!I thought it was interesting that when Septime made the comment about him being on both the giving and receiving end of rejection and humiliation, he automatically thinks about Lily, but not about Septima. Does he have any clue how he sometimes makes her feel? I mean he is very, very good to her, and I don't think he has bad intentions, but he is still not 100% committed to her, and in the end, that is what she needs and deserves.

What a nice talk Septima and Remus had. I am glad that past events didn't sour their friendship.And Sirius putting the moves on her made me giggle. Then Snape burst in and snatched her away, and while he made an obnoxious comment about Sirius' house (which also made me giggle) there was no fighting between the two which was a relief. There is enough tension as it is with Dumbledore around.

I've always pictured Sirius as a perpetual young adult male on the make, so he would consider any presentable female to be fair game. Isn't it wonderful that Snape can make a neutral comment obnoxious just with a shrug and wave of his hand? I love that about him.

LOL! Sirius is mostly harmless. I don't think he knows a proper way to be in public after all that time in Azkaban and on the run. I think you're right, too. Severus seems to have everything Sirius doesn't have right now.
