War is hell, and the aftermath is often the most hellish part of all. Having lost everyone she most loves, Hermione Granger is only a shell of the woman she had been. Devastated by loss and guilt, Hermione draws the attention of Severus Snape with a random utterance.

Another great chapter, I'm in two minds of how to torture myself with this. I could read it as you deal out each nougat of gold or wait until its complete and enjoy an indulgent feast...what to do
My, how the tables have turned with Severus now the one afraid to knock. Another intriguing chapter.
hah! way to turn the tables, hermione! i love getting to see things from his pov so we realize how uncertain he actually is about what he's doing.
beautifully done, you.
How interesting it is to see things from Severus' POV. And now he sees that it's not so easy, when he is the one outside of the door, to bring himself to make the move.
And I hope it is simply a case of her turning the tables and not that she is hurt or ill. It seems odd that no one has seen her for a month and yet they have not bothered to check on her. Although it does sound as if she has been known to ignore them in the past when they tried to interfere.
Ah the tables are turned. She's not the only one with self-doubt. I enjoyed seeing Severus' pov in this chapter.

It was about time to dispel the impression Hermione had built of him, that he was some Grand Architect of all things. He's as human as she is, just in a somewhat better place in his life. Thank you!
-- And still, he stood uncertainly upon her door step, loath to take the knocker in his hand and knock. --It's not so easy when you're the one who has to make that move, is it, Severus? Wonderful chapter. I enjoyed seeing his perspective.

I think it gives all of us a little glow of smugness to see him hesitate to knock. I'm glad you enjoyed his POV. thank you!
HAH! Not so easy, is it?? Can't wait for the next chapter . . .

Yes, there's a certain glorious HAH! from all of us, I think. But he's not without sympathy for her plight ... Thank you for the lovely comment!
It is so interesting to see things from Severus' POV. He seems so sure of himself and his methods when we are in Hermione's POV, but now we know he is all but flying by the seat of his pants. I am not sure if this uncertain confidence gives me more hope or less that they will work this out. What ever this is. I really hope that making him come to her is her way of turning the tables on him. It would mean that she taking some initiative in this budding relationship, and forcing him to play her part this time. And funny enough, although I have little doubt he will follow through, he is hesitant to knock as well. I do hope this is her intention, and not that something is wrong. You really must update soon so I don't worry, okay? Wonderful, wonderful chapter.

Yes, he definitely considers it an art form rather than a science, so there's no absolute "If I do this then she'll do that" formula for him to work by. If he could stir it up like a potion he would be much happier about it! At the very least, I believe we can depend on his determination. We'll know more about what's up with Hermione and why she stayed away in the next chapter. I'll try to update soon, depending on how cooperative the Muse is! Thank you for your thoughtful comments.
I can't breathe....

Respiro! And if that doesn't work, Severus will have to do CPR ...
Oh, you must knock, Severus! What an evil cliffie to leave us on, Sub. But this chapter encapsulates their tango so well: pushing too far, opening up too quickly, one step forward, two steps back. The naked vulnerability of them both in this situation is - heartwrenching. Frustrating. Tantalizing. I love that she keyed the wards to him. And now, I just want the damn man to knock!

~happy sigh~ Love the way you describe their dance. They are all of those things ... particularly frustrating to one another.~smooch~
It's wonderful and quite revealing to hear the plot thus far from Snape's point of view. I'm excited you have this chapter added to the already powerful story. Keep up the fabulous writing. I'm on pins and needles.

It was difficult to make that switch into his head, but once I finally got there, his point of view just flowed - he has plenty to say about it! Thank you for the lovely compliment.
Oh, he´s such a lovely Mr Darcy character in this story! I´d love for him to have some blackness to his heart too -- maybe he´s not entirely free of issues either? Oh, and the build-up! He´s not going to be able to refuse her! Squeee! Knock, Hermione, knock!
It's wonderful to start a week with a new Owned chapter =) I was particularly moved by the fact that the jams were sent as way to ask forgiveness, something that Hermione hadn't even imagined.
Oh, Subversa, how could you do that to us Hermione? Is he forcing her to find the strength to make the first move? It isn't enough that she tries the knob? Why can't he just leave the blasted door unlocked?! Why can't I click to chapter Five?! (Did I say in here somewhere how much I love this chapter, with all its pink indulgences and ice blue glamour?) :)
I read the first chapter and swore I wouldn't read more until you had finished it, but I finally couldn't resist - the lure of a Subversa story was just too strong!
I think this is some of your best writing ever (which is saying a lot!); there's just so much emotion and depth. I just want to shake Hermione out of her depression, but I suspect Severus' approach is much more appropriate; he seems to understand much better than anyone what it will take to bring Hermione back to herself.
Everything seemed to be going so well, but she certainly isn't out of the woods yet. I guess she has some recovering to do before she is ready to be with Severus.
On the other hand, what a lovely spa day with a new dress, too! I suppose Severus was responsible for those little bits of cheer.
I really thought Hermione was going to knock on Severus' door that time. I have the feeling he's the one responsible for the spa and dresses Hermione found. Another wonderful chapter.

The evening may not have ended as Hermione had wished it had, but I think she has made great progress... even though she is weeping at his door.
When Severus had come up the stairs to steady her, she became aware of him in a way I'd wager she hadn't felt about anyone in a very long time: He was a man—a man—not simply a former teacher, an Order member … not even just the source of inexplicable comfort. He was male—muscle, bone, and sinew—testosterone and temptation.
This is monumental progress for her!
I think I understand why he didn't open his bedroom door to her when he knew perfectly well that she was there. This is something that Hermione has to want badly enough to break through her own fears.
I want a day at The Sanctuary, too!

I'm humming "Killing Me Softly" to myself right now.
You are an ebil woman. And I would follow you anywhere.
wonderful chapter Sub
BOY NOW HER MIND IS WAKING UP AND HES LETTING WORK THRU THIS SO SHE WONT CRACKUP AGAIN. THIS IS GREAT!!!! <<<< PATTING YOU ON THE BACK!!!!!!
I almost wonder if he isn't being cruel. But I'm so fascinated.
Oh so achingly beautiful. I am so glad this was available to read on this day. Lovely and beautiful angst so much more human and true to form than the sacchrine platitudes of happily ever after. You have a gift m'dear!
I know he is gradually pushing her to go beyond herself and come back to herself at the same time.
The notes I jotted down while reading this chapter are sleep, spa, short hair. All "s" words, just like my boy friend Severus.
Sleep. Unlike Hermione when I am depressed I sleep. I can sleep 18 hours a day. Closing my eyes and drifting off I escape. Well things are better now.
Spa! Oh delight! I am glad she took the champaign and allowed the elves to pamper her.
Short hair. 20 points to your house for cutting her hair off. I am heartly sick of her long hair. Short hair is good and fun and youthful and practical.
Would it be wrong of me to confess I am happy Hermione couldnt knock on the door? It means there will be many more chapters of angst before you are done here!
