Reviews for This Present Darkness
My sights are moving from Lucius to Hermione's boss--Solomon as The Angel. A total guess from a dropped hint that he tragically lost his wife. Then there is the fact that he controls how the investigation is handled, including how the Ministry analyzes the potion in the victims' bloodstream. Solomon mentioned to Hermione the killer would strike again soon--a serial killer profile or his own agenda?Hermione remains hopelessly in love with Severus and he is obviously still in love with her. He is jealous of any male she interacts with or talks about. I am dying to know what the facts are about the crime Severus is accused of.

Ah, the Angel! Good job on catching the clue concerning Solomon's wife-- it is important to the story and you will find out why in the next chapter. But you're insights are very good! Yes, they are both still hopelessly in love with each other. This produces a rather sad situation, as neither really knows how to handle their feelings. And all canon signs point to Severus as a jealous person (his interactions with Lily about James). There is just something that is attractive about a possessive Snape! As for Severus' crime, I promise you find out something next chapter. It was supposed to be in this chapter, actually, but I ended up breaking the chapter into 2 because it got quite long. Thanks for reading and reviewing,

After this chapter, I think that Solomon is the killer, having lost his wife and wanting to revive her. And if he's Lucius (still think so), it must be Narcissa he wants to revive. Would explain the hatred with which he approached Severus in the previous chapter - especially if Severus had something to do with Narcissa's death (was she by any chance one of his 'innocent' victims?). But this chapter was less about the clues than about the developing relationship between Severus/Hermione; loved that, too. More lemons next time?
Response from HannahSmith (Reviewer)
On second thought, could it be Lucius/Voldemort (like Squirrel in book 1), so he has Lucius' looks and hair, and Voldemort's lisp (Reets67's suggestion) plus his ability to brew something truly awful, and then wishing to revive Bellatrix, his mistress (one of Severus' victims, perhaps), with her dramatical hair? For Narcissa doesn't fit that description... Now I've done guessing until your next chapter is out!
Response from kizzy7 (Author of This Present Darkness)
Hannah, dear. Again, I am simply blown away by your theories! I cannot wait until you know what is going on, so that we can have a real discussion! But for now, I will say that Solomon's hatred of Snape *is* important, and good job picking up on that! And yes, this chapter was more about the evolving relationship of ss/hg. Lemons, my dear, are coming... Will be the first time I've even attempted writing the lemons, so we'll see. As for the rest of your theories... Gah, I can't give anything away. This chapter was supposed to be longer, but I added some stuff and split it in two, because otherwise it would have been way too long. So I plan on posting hopefully tonight, definitely tomorrow at the latest. *hugs* ~kizzy

That's so great! Cannot wait to see it! *hugs back* I'm working against a horrible (translation) deadline this week, so TPP offers just the breaks I need without having to leave the pc! Thanks a million for helping to make life bearable!
Response from kizzy7 (Author of This Present Darkness)
I SO know what you mean about TPP offering much needed breaks. My problem is that I often spend too much time on TPP, ha! Glad to be of assistance. And thank you for such wonderful, insightful reviews! Makes my days brighter, that is for sure! Not much beats getting a good review, and yours have been excellent.

Great chapter.. Would love to know the truth soon though, so Hermione can forgive him, and they can live happily ever after haha. Only joking, not just yet, i love where this is going.

You know, if that weren't so skillfully crafted, I'd be irritated that you don't give us the why. ;)

What a difference a day makes. Or however many days it's been. It's good that Hermione realizes that she must ask Severus what happened. That was quite the hot little exchange there. Obviously, Hermione has no control whatsoever over herself. I'm sure she's shocked and excited by that all in one.I loved how Severus totally pegged Gilderoy Lockhart, I mean, Grayson. Now, the fact that her boss lost his wife 'tragically', is that a hint?
Response from kizzy7 (Author of This Present Darkness)
It's been one day. LOL! My whole story, which is complete in 15 chapters, covers three days. And, yes, Hermione has absolutely no control over herself. But you see at this point she has come to believe that Severus is more or less innocent. With good reason, but still... And Severus' diatribe against Grayson was my favorite part of the whole chapter! Ruthless and cruel. However, Grayson is a better man than Severus gives him credit for. I'm rather fond of him, actually. My beta is practically in love with him, lol! As for the 'tragic' bit... good catch. More about that in the next chapter. Thanks, deb!

great chapter. I honestly think his confession is somewhere along the lines of what happened with Morfin and the little house elf in HBP, they were planted there. I can't wait to read more!

I have just come across this story and I love that I can't definitively see answers to the possible veiled characterisations and plots. It is also interesting to have a 'full-of-himself' Severus, even though he has been incarcerated in Azkaban - the post-shower kitchen scene illustrates this wonderfully (and gave us some great imagery). You portray Hermione brilliantly. Dogged in determination and brilliant at her job, yet still a hint of feminine vulnerability where Snape is concerned.I thought on the premise that Solomon was known to Snape, and HannahSmith's idea that it was Lucius was good, but then so soon after breaking out of Azkaban? Then a character metaphorically hit me in the face like bludger - Silver hair and the fact that he knew that Hermione and Deverus had been close - Dumbledore? The killer...that sibilant lisp...strikes me as being very much like Voldemort, but he is supposed to be dead. And the ressurected female - ? Bellatrix. The sample Hermione extracted from the last victim has me intrigued...it appears to be sentient - ?wanting to escape and is it moving to avoid scrutiny? And as these are murders is there going to be a Magic equivalent of the Muggle autopsy?Looking forward to reading more. Cheers.

-- wonderful, wonderful review and theories! Perfect way to begin my day! Thank you. I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am with this review-- especially your comments on Hermione's characterization. Exactly what I wanted to portray-- determined, believes that she is sure of herself and of who she is... but then Severus comes back into her life and suddenly everything slowly begins to fall apart. As for Solomon-- yes, he looks "maddeningly familiar" to Snape. You will actually find out more about that next chapter... And the killer! Yes, he is creepy. Very good theories, reets. As for the potion... it moves because of what it is made of. As for the autopsy, I think that I briefly implied something about "autopsies and magical examinations," but I didn't really want to go into details, because sadly I don't know anything about autopsies, other than the information I've received from, like, CSI and X-Files. lol!! More will be up soon. Thanks again for this brilliant review! ~kizzy

You have me completely puzzled as to what could have actually taken place. It just does not make sense that Severus would murder 9 innocents. Were they not innocent, was it Imperious, was it not really him? Why didn't Hermione go to rant and rave at him after it happened. That seems more in character. She handled the situation with the love of her life in such a clinical manner. I am so curious to see what happens next.I am going to guess that the Angel of Death is attempting to revive a dead person with some essence from a total of five witches.
Response from kizzy7 (Author of This Present Darkness)
Well... I was hoping to have everyone puzzled at this point. *chuckles evilly* So, Severus. Why would he murder 9 people? Would he? Sadly, I can't answer those questions because it would ruin the story. Just know that perhaps not all is at it seems! And Hermione. You are right. She handled things completely wrong-- she let her emotions take over, forgoing logic. She was young, and in love. Now, however, she is older, and is going to demand an explanation. However, something happens in the next chapter that complicates things further... As for your guess, well, you will see... Thanks so much for this wonderful review,

Glad you enjoyed my speculations! It's such fun to dream up theories that fit the clues, so I'd love to have more clues before you finally reveal the truth! I also thought of Rodolphus being the killer, to explain why the bundle is his 'sweet' (fanon has stories where Lucius and Bellatrix have something going, but canon doesn't). But we wouldn't recognize Rodolphus by his hair. Then again, the killer's reference to Hermione's hair would fit Bella's hair ('dramatically framing' her face, being 'fuzzy'), so I really think it must be Bella. Narcissa survives the war and would be less interesting than Bella anyway (Bella would be a nice candidate for the next Dark Lord/Lady), so no reason to assume that it's Lucius trying to revive his wife. Ah well, maybe I'm barking at the wrong tree altogether. And what's that potion? Does it contain the essence of the 'bundle's' spirit to make it think? It's interesting stuff...
Response from kizzy7 (Author of This Present Darkness)
The potion! I think that you are the first person to ask me about it! Again, I can't tell you what it is, because what it is and what it does are directly related to who the killer is. Sort of. Or... how the killer makes the potion is a clue for who he is. LOL! I know I'm being all mysterious, hehe. Again, LOVE your speculations. I have more subtle clues coming up... hope you enjoy!

Will keep you informed of my theories! But when it comes to potions, all I can think of is Snape, who has an alibi being in Azkaban. Peter Pettigrew has brewed Voldemort's rising potion, of course, but he's dead according to canon (but so is Snape). And I don't know who would be his 'sweet'. Think I'd better wait for some more clues...

Only just found your intriguing story: I'll try to do some detection work! Since Solomon turned out silver-haired and looked somewhat familiar to Severus in this chapter, I suppose he is actually Lucius Malfoy (not Draco, for Solomon is an 'older' man), Disillusioned or something like that. But why does it strike Severus and not Hermione, though she works with Solomon? Anyway, if it is Lucius, it stands to reason he has something to do with the killer (or is the killer); why else would he be hiding? Unless it's just to escape Azkaban. But then he would be less interesting to your plot as far as we know it now. This bundle in the corner sounds pretty gross. Is it Bellatrix (sister in law to Lucius) who needs the limbs, the life-force or the magic of five young witches to rise from the dead, with the help of this killer?Of course Severus hasn't willingly killed innocent people simply out of malice. Was it Lucius or some other guy using Severus' wand? Or was it Severus under the Imperius? Or did Severus somehow have a choice between killing these nine or seeing the whole magical world succumb to the Dark? Or maybe these people were not as innocent as they seemed (actually Polyjuiced Death Eaters, perhaps). That would explain why he 'wanted to' kill them, as he said during the trial; and why he already knew he was going to kill them when he sent Hermione away that night.Hermione has jumped to conclusions too soon. If she really loved him, how could she believe him to be as bad as that, without giving him a chance to explain? Memories and Pensieves can be modified (even in the books). Her only excuse is that she was very young at that time. She should know better by now.Just guessing, of course I don't expect you to tell... butpls update soon, can't wait to find out!

Hannah, this review has made my entire week. I'm not kidding-- wow. Your theories are amazing!!! And you are right... I cannot tell you now, because that would ruin the story!! Just know that I loved reading about them and you will find out eventually how close you are!! And yes, the bundle in the corner is gross. I'm afraid it gets worse in future snippets from the killer. *shudders* I actually creeped myself out when I wrote them, hehe. In regards to Severus: Though I cannot tell you for sure, I will just say that not all is as it seems. In the next chapter, you will find out a bit more about the 9 he killed, though I hope you give Severus more of a chance than Hermione does. And you are completely right about Hermione. She jumped to conclusions way too quickly. She was young, in love, and found out that the one man she loves above all others killed 9 innocent people. And now? She should know better. But something happens next chapter that once again throws a wrench in it all. You will see. I will update soon. I have to go over chapter 5 again (it is a long one for me!), then I will post. You'll have to let me know what you think of it; it is one of my favorite chapter, lol. Again, thanks for this amazing review!!!! *hugs* ~kizzy

I can't decide who I think the killer is, but I feel certain we've gotten at least a glimpse of him. Hmmm....Why would Severus kill those people? Imperius is too obvious, I'm sure. Too frustrating! (That's meant to be a compliment...)In all seriousness, do you mean for us to try and figure things out? Or is it something that will be impossible to tell untl the end?
Response from kizzy7 (Author of This Present Darkness)
I do not want to give too much away now, lol, but... at this point I have already introduced the killer. I have also already left two important clues as to who he is. They are small, however, and easily overlooked (though I thought that one was way too obvious, though my beta assured me it wasn't!) As for why Severus would kill those people, I can't say now! Would give away the story. As for your question... I think that it is perfectly possible to figure out who the killer is. I do not think that it is very possible to figure out why/if Severus killed the people until he explains himself. You will find out more about it in the next chapter, but I have to warn you: I try to confuse you. Do not be like Hermione! Reserve judgement until all is explained! Thanks for this review, I really appreciate it. ~kizzy

Great chapter! Very dense and intense, and piling nicely up on the suspense.
Author's Response: Thanks Alcina! So glad you enjoyed, as for some reason chapter 4 was difficult for me to write. Now, the next chapter is one of my personal favorites, lol, and you find out something rather shocking, so you'll have to let me know what you think. Thanks! ~kizzy
I hope that when this Angel of Death character attacks Hermione the spell over Severus helps, and doesn't hinder his ability to save her.

that was a great chapter. very sad, but it was still great. I was just thinking of something... you named this after a frank peretti story, well, i have a frank peretti book to reccomend to you called "House" and he wrote it with Ted Dekker and the movie comes out on November 7th. I'm reading it right now, but i strongly reccommend it for anyone to read. anyways, i can't wait to read more of your story!
Response from kizzy7 (Author of This Present Darkness)
I will have to read it before I see the movie! I love Frank Peretti, 'This Present Darkness' is actually the only book of his that I have read so far. I'll put 'House' on my list (yes, I have a list, lol). Thanks for the rec and the review, snapefan! I am always looking for good books to read. ~kizzy

So I went to my library today, and sadly they did not have 'House.' I will just have to order it on amazon, probably. But I got two other books of his-- The Visitation and Monster. Have you read either of them? lol, just wondering. ;)

no, i haven't read either of them, but i'm working my way through his and ted dekkers books, my friend owns all of them. you should read piercing the darkness as well, it's the sequel to "this present darkness" and it rocks! i read the two books years ago, but i'm reading them again now. what is it with libraries and not having the books you want, especially the good ones? geez... anyways, can't wait to read more! *i'm always looking for good books to read as well, i have books everywhere and i have read them all multiple times and i get sick of them so i go buy more... *

I know what you mean! Books everywhere! I worked at a library for a few years, and that was worse. I would check out dozens of books and then just leave them all over and my husband would get angry, lol. I also have a habit of reading 3 or 4 books at once. But I started The Visitation last night, and its good so far.

But I started The Visitation last night, and its good so far.
That was so lovely, but really that is so sad. Severus is always so secretive, I don't know what he wanted from her.

Thanks! It is a sad situation, and I'm afraid it gets worse before it gets better. And Severus... ah, I can see both sides. I really can. Hermione, believing what she does, is completely justified in her reactions. And Severus is somewhat justifiably bitter that she never came to see him, to hear from him what happened. Ah, those two. Thanks,
