Seven years after the Final Battle, Severus Snape has been declared dead, and his property has reverted to the Ministry. Desperate to get away from her deadbeat job, Hermione purchases the Prince manor with the intention of renovating it, inheriting with it a rather forlorn house-elf, empty stables, and a well-stocked library. And, to her surprise, the ghost of one of Snape’s ancestors. Or is it?

The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall is on a temporary hiatus. Look for an update in winter 2012!
Reviews for The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall
Hee a lovely begining and I have to agree with Drox, darling, a fic that begins with an obituary is made of win.Interesting how Hermione tends to skirt around her feelings in regards to Snape and his death. I know you don't write student/professor so I suspect it is mearly a crush. Not surprised that the ghost would look like Snape after all it has to be one of his ancestors and looks are genetic.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
You *would* enjoy that. :-) To my mind, Hermione has very complicated feelings about Snape - it's a bit intimidation, a bit that it was the first body killed in front of her (to the best of my knowledge), a bit hero worship, plus the fact that he was the one teacher she could never please (she thought) and so had an inevitably complicated relationship with -- throw all that in a pot and stir, and you've got my understanding of her feelings about him, though that's up for reader interpretation, of course.
This is a very intriguing beginning! I love your Hermione. I'm glad she decided to quit the Ministry, and her exit was brilliant :)I love Lyonesse Hall (Lyonesse=Lioness?) and Pip is just adorable. Is his name a reference to Great Expectations? Can't wait to see what happens next.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
First, let me say that it's so good to have you reading! I look forward to getting your thoughts as the story progresses. Yes, Pip is an allusion to GE (Ari gave me a prompt straight out of Romanticism, but you gotta love the Victorians). I've always heard Lyonesse pronounced lee-o-ness, but the similarity of the words, looks wise, is not lost on me. ;) There must be a word for the occurrence when words look like they sound the same but don't.
There's so much to love in this first chapter. Let's start with Hermione. Despite years of frustration as she tilted at Ministy windmills, she still wants to right wrongs. Good old dependable Hermione. Moving to Lyonesse Hall was so impulsive, though, a plan frought with uncertainty. I'm surprised she didn't turn to Arithmancy before making her decision to quit her job and become the Bob Villa of the Wizarding world. So different from the cautious and calculating witch of her youth, but she needs different in the worst way now. And Blaise, underutilized and charming. He knew what buttons to push to get Hermione to move forward in her life. And adorable Pip. A nod to Dickens? And Lyonesse Hall with its mystery and romance. I can't wait to hear what the portraits have to say about the new Muggle mistress. I'm loving this, LR!!!

~grins~ I have a thing for Hermione doing impulsive stuff at pivotal moments. That's the thing about tightly-wound folk: wind 'em too tight and they are likely to snap in the most unlikely direction (why am I not using first person plural there?). Also, yay that you like Blaise and Pip! Yes, Pip is a nod to Dickens - even though Ari's prompt is straight out of Romanticism, I could not resist some Victorian nods, too... and the name was too friggin perfect. ~squishes you madly~ I am so very glad that you're enjoying this.
oh my! Well, this is interesting. I'm on to the next chapter now. :)

Thank you! The next chapter isn't up yet, but I look forward to reading your thoughts on it.

I can't wait. I have the story bookmarked. Oh how I love the bookmark update feature!
I love your Hermione. When will these Ministry idiots learn to stop pushing her? I guess when the lesson finally sinks in that she pushes back far harder - if they ever can learn their lessons.Pip's lovely too, poor thing. And that ghost... very intriguing.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Hello dear! ~squish~ I've always had the niggling feeling that Hermione's too... independent, reckless, and just too bloody smart... for the Ministry, who would push her or take her for granted or take advantage of her or all of the above. So I'm very glad you're enjoying that bit. And I'm hard at work on chapter two, so keep on the lookout for it. :)
Wonderfully intriguing beginning and looking forward to more. Thank you.

Great start! I am so very intrigued by your seemingly very original fic and I can't wait to read more! Thanks for a pleasant read.

Brilliant! I am so happy to have read this first chapter of what, based on said first chapter, seems to be a very, very interesting story. The plot is intriguing and fresh, I love the mystery around Lyonesse Hall (Could easily be transferred to Lionesse Hall, perfect for Hermione, the Gryffindor Lionesse), I hope you will let us know more about how Hermione and Blaise became friends, tell us much more about Pip, and most importantly more about the ghost and Severus. I am very much looking forward to read more.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
The details you note are ones very dear to my heart (not the least of which is the Lyonesse/Lioness similarity!), so this review made me grin from ear to ear. I'm currently working on chapter two and will look forward to hearing your thoughts when it's posted!
merci merci beaucoup, les fantômes et les belles maisons font partie de mes histoires favorites. Quel talent pour décrire une ambiance.courage pour la suite !Thank you very much. Ghosts and mysterious manors are my favourite. you are very skilled for moodI can't hear the restHope it goes well
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Thank you! I'm so pleased that you enjoy what you've read so far and look forward to hearing your thoughts on future chapters. :)
This is an excellent start. I can't wait to see more. Update soonest, please? ^_^
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Thank you! Working on chapter two. :)
Really great start. I like that you are using a real house (manor?) as the basis for Lyonesse Hall.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Thank you! Even though I'm taking liberties with the floor plan, I really like having pictures to work off of. I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Any fic that starts with Snape's obituary is win!I loved the scene where HG quits her job. XD Kingsley asks if she's going to turn the home into a shrine. =)Apparently there are several mysteries. Goetz/Ministry is after something.I know SS' death is still an open issue. But I can hope he's the ghost. =) But I do not think Severus is the ghost. You are purposefully leaving something out of HG's reactions to leaving Snape in the shack. If you have a villian in this, make them worthy. =DWhat I find interesting is this is a fic for Ari, who is also writing a "ghost" Snape fic. XD I take it Crooks is gone?
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
You and death. ~sigh~ ~grins~ I'm so glad you're enjoying the fic, Drox. The story is going a different direction than I think some readers think it's going, and I do look forward to hearing your reaction. I am actually not reading In Spirit (will read when it's complete) so any resemblance is pure accident. And re: Crooks, I never write Crooks in fic - so let's just say that he's gone and Hermione has yet to find a replacement. :-)
Excellent beginning; can't wait to see what happens in the next chapter!
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Thank you! I'm hard at work on chapter two, so be on the lookout for it. :)
Pip! I love the name Pip! Sounds like he has been alone for quite some time. Poor little guy. I like the idea of Hermione diving into such a big project. I know the main mystery will be with the haunted horseman but I am just as excited to hear about the renovations. LOL! How often are you planning on updating young lady? I am all atwitter!
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Even tho' Pip's name is from the very-Victorian Great Expectations, it was perfect for him. I do love Pip - so glad you're enjoying him! And I solemnly swear that you will learn the mystery of the ghost in the next chapter (I just wrapped up a writing session at my favorite coffeeshop - over 1000 words. Now, to revise the bejeezus out of them and write more...)
I cannot agree more with Subversa. I also hope you are writing this very minute or even better, that someone is beta-ing the next chapter this very minute. Can you give us some indication how much of this story is already finished? Are suggestions welcome or is everything in the storyline already fixed?I found it so funny that Hermione started her first morning in this traditional British setting with a coffee instead of tea. I know you are the coffee addict, but I hadn't expect to find coffee in that particular moment.I'm intrigued about the gost, and especially curious if he is going to share his identity. Somehow I hope the combination of the powers of the house, those mysterious ledgers and the gost - and of course Hermione's intellect - will be the right ingredients to bring Severus back. Can I bribe you into updating soon? Coffee for the muse perhaps, and chocolates?
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Thank you! I know that tea is probably the more proper thing for Hermione to drink, but coffee just permeates my stories; it's not even conscious. And my Hermione does love her coffee. *g* To answer your question, I am in the process of wrapping my head around chapter two and am preparing to start writing it this morning. I write relatively quickly, and now that the first chapter is on paper, as it were, the engine is starting to kick in. ~accepts coffee and chocolate gratefully~
Response from orlando switch (Reviewer)
Thanks for your reply and good luck with writing in your favorite coffeeshop today. Let the engine be fueled by more coffee :-)I found and image of a retro Italian espresso machine for use at home that would fit into the style of Hermione's new manor and the instruments that are common in the wizarding world I think. You can see it here:http://www.espressoworkshop.com/shop/shop902.htmlBtw if you happen to be into baking as well, I do have a delicious recipe of a coffee sponge cake with coffee buttercream. I just made it last weekend for a birthdayparty and everyone was enthralled so I thought: why I am not making this more often?
this is very promising. Can't wait for updates. I like your Hermione ( and Blaise Sabini good banter). I would have liked to se Severus on a white horse, can one hope he is not a ghost? well it is a fic so---
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Thank you! I am so glad you're enjoying it. Your questions about the ghost will be answered in chapter two. :-)
“I think there comes a point in a friendship where it’s too late to sleep together,” Hermione said.Ha! Well said, Hermione!I love the fact that she cried at his trial, love the fact that she can't help imagining him in the house, and OMG THE GHOST (oh a horse, omg, how sexy is that????) LOOKS LIKE HIM!!!!!!!!~runs in crazy circles~You're writing, right? Like, this minute?
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Your support means so much to me. I am thrilled to have you reading this! ~squishes you tightly~ And I do plan to head to my favorite coffeeshop this morning to continue to untangle chapter two...
Hmm. I wonder what is so important about these ledgers. I've been reading and so far I love it. I can't wait to find out what happens, so please update soon!
I adore this chapter. Beginning with the dawn when Severus and Perdita were running for their lives along the edge of craig. “Oh, Perdy, what am I doing?” Dear Gussy, he's got it bad. He can't keep his mind on his work, and he knows he can't stay away from her even though he probably thinks he should. Which is why even though Hermione and her nicely curved arse bothered him, he had no intention of leaving well enough alone.Seeing Hermione as she stood at her bathroom mirror nearly carried him away.... nearly gave him away. I don't know how long he will be able to keep up this ruse, and I hope Hermione will find it in her to forgive him for not letting her know who he is from the start. At least now he knows For myself, I'm tickled that he can't stay away. I want him to be drawn to her like a moth to a candle... just don't get burnt. The music you chose for him is perfectly matched to his emotions, and when Hemione excused herself for a minute I half expected him to run after her. At least now he knows without a shadow of a doubt that:• She was beautiful. •She cared for him. • And he wanted her. Merlin help him ...• to find a way to let her know he thinks she is beautiful.• to tell her he cares for her.• And that he wants her for himself.I am simply covered in goosebumps, and I don't think is all due to the cold weather here tonight. Well done, my darling girl!Hugs, Beth

How have I not responded to this? *adores you* Thank you, as ever, for your glorious attention to detail... just makes an author preen with joy. :-) I am done with chapter seven (awaiting one last beta before posting) and am excited to get your thoughts on it.
Yes you have updated! Hope you are doing well with your studies, I suppose is a big change to go back to studying fulltime.I'm glad Severus has nice employees he can rely on and the way Pip is protective of Hermione is really charming. Though it might be inconvenient for Severus that Cupido has hit him this hard, there is a positive side at this as well. When he still was a spy he'd never allowed emotions to interfere with his role. The fact this now just happens to him is also a sign that he really has left his old life behind and it's time for something new - he just doesn't know it yet.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Thank you! Chapter seven is almost ready to post - I look forward to getting your thoughts on it!
Response from orlando switch (Reviewer)
Yay! That is delightful news. I look forward to the new chapter.
Wonderful to see an update. The emotions are really rising, for both characters! You did a wonderful job expressing their inner thoughts, even if we only hear directy from Severus in this instance. Beautiful, and the music only added! I had to listen to the Chopin as Snape considered playing it, hearing it in the absence of his not playing it (created quite a bit of impact, actually). Looking forward to more.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
Thank you! I'm so glad you're enjoying it. The next chapter should post within a few days.
I have a feeling that being a ghost is somehow going to become a problem rather quickly! LOL!
Response from lady_rhian (Author of The Tenant of Lyonesse Hall)
