Hermione Granger, new Hogwarts librarian, has inherited the unenviable task of archiving parts of Hogwarts' neglected archives. There, she uncovers a manuscript by Salazar Sytherin and finds that his injunctions against Muggles aren't exactly what everyone has always assumed them to be. Unable to quite believe it herself, no one else believes her until, in a bizarre set of circumstances, the author himself appears and begins to meddle in Hermione's life.

Good so far. I was intrigued by this prompt when I first read it. I can't wait to see what you do with it.

Well, well, well, this was certainly an interesting twist. And now I'm thinking that 'Sal' will go back at some point (after he gets to know Hermione and her briilliance) and write the parchment that will then be mistranslated. And then Hermione will find the parchment and realise that it's been mistranslated. And then Sal will come back and ... and ... oh, very 'snaky' indeed!I'm looking forward to seeing how you untwist this.

That's a very interesting theory you've come up with! I obviously can't tell you if that's how it will play out; you'll just have to read the rest of the fic to find out!

Wahoo. Bravo! Very exciting indeed!! I love that Salazar has shown up... this proves to be very interesting when we find out what exactly he meant in his parchment! I can't wait for more (as always!)

Sev and Hermione will have to approach him veeery carefully about that issue if they actually want to get to the truth!

So they finally meet. Hee hee. Although I like time-travel stories, somehow time-TURNER stories always left me cold because it usually goes back to the Marauders, which may or may not be interesting. lol However, this bringing Salazar forward in time is a GREAT premise. I can't wait to see what happens!!! :-D

Thanks! This was a great idea by my wonderful co-author, and I think the plot we've planned out will work well. It just seems to be taking us a while!

Fascinating. The magical powers of virgins, versus good old eromancy? I'm really looking forward to seeing where this is going.

Oh dear. If they got this, one of his very first writings wrong, what does that mean for the rest of them?I love how it was Hermione's find and translation that gi=ave him this new information, yet he still does not want to give her the benefit of the doubt!

Yes, Severus possesses a unique combination of envy + appreciation. What a position to be in! He will start to get the point eventually, though. Thank you so much for the review! :)

Hmm, a very nice little puzzle for Severus to figure out! However, following the train of thought, if men had to keep marrying muggles, then magic would eventually become a very commonplace thing among the human race -- maybe all people would eventually become magical? An intriguing subject -- Good job!
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
I hadn't thought of that - I guess it depends on whether magic is really genetic, and if so, whether it is a dominant or recessive trait. One is tempted to say recessive, given the small number of magical people, but then, the 'pureblood' agenda might simply have prevented the extension of that allele throughout the general population. Hmm... your review has intrigued me! I'm off to give that a think. Thank you! :-D

Very interesting. I love that Severus is still unwilling to give Hermione any credit (or does so very, very grudgingly). I'm looking forward to the evolution of their relationship. :-)
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Of course he won't give her credit! He is blind and stubborn. Just how we like him. :) Thanks for your review!

Another good chapter. I'm glad she included Snape and am liking his take on things. :))

Snape (or perhaps it's me) seems to be making an assumption that the alteration to ms was made to forward the purity agenda. But if Snape's other supposition is correct, and Salazar was promoting the idea that witches should remain virgins, I'd be inclined to suggest that a sexually frustrated witch made the change. Yes another man trying to sabotage the matriarchy.I loved that Snape couldn't manage to reexamine his opinion of Hermione even in the light of her demonstrated capabilities. I do hope he's in for a long, hard fall. Fabulous beginning. I'll be watching eagerly for new chapters.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Thank you so much! What an interesting thing to say, re: the alteration being made by a frustrated witch. I certainly would have been tempted, were I in that position! And Snape, well, he's in for a long hard fall indeed. What a stubborn man he is. ;)

Ooh, a light. But wow, wanting witches to stay virgins forever really makes for an interesting philosophy.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Weelll, we shall have to see whether Snape is correct in his assumption. :) But yes, an interesting philosophy - somewhere on the cusp between liberation and oppression. ;)

Now that Snape is in the mix, I'm certain that there will be some fireworks in the future -- all kinds of fireworks. Hummmm ... this will be interesting. I can tell that Snape is already having to rethink his opinions of Hermione.Good work!Beth

Definitely lots of fireworks to come! And very soon... Thanks for your review! :)

I just stumbled across your story and definitely enjoyed it, but one question remains: Do you translate "homo" into English as "man" meaning a male individual? That would actually be "vir" in contrast to "mulier". "Homines" are "people"or the "human race" in general. Of course "homo" does also mean "male human being" or even "servant/slave", but a woman is also "human", which is implied by a plural form. "Viri" would actually be the correct term in that case... I'm sorry to point out what looks like a mistake to me, because I otherwise love your writing.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!About your Latin question: it's not a mistake, but rather a deliberate choice. We needed loads of words, basically: one for wizards, one for witches, one for male Muggles, one for female Muggles, one for all males, one for all females, and one for all humans! Choosing the Latin actually became quite taxing. Here is what it breaks down to:wizard = maguswitch = sagaMuggle man = virMuggle woman = muliermale person = homofemale person = feminahuman beings = genus hominumSo yeah, it's not exactly your standard Ciceronian word choice! We'll just assume that Latin vocab had become a little corrupted by the time Slytherin was writing... ;)
Response from Mnemosyne (Reviewer)
Technically it still doesn't fit at all, but I can use my imagination!I think the problem lies in the way the English language uses the word "man". This does actually fit into your concept of "mankind" = "genus hominum". Other languages make a difference between "male individual" and "mankind/ the human race", including women - as in Latin "homines".So I'm perfecly willing to read this lovely story without listening to the little devil in my head screaming "No! I wouldn't be aloud to write THAT down". That devil does scream, when I read "genius", too. It's one of those typically Roman words, that you cannot really translate and "talent" is not the classical meaning - at least it doesn't look to me as "homo" = "male" does. That just seems so wrong... never mind: I want another chapter!
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
'S okay, you don't have to listen to the devil in your head at all. This is medieval Latin, so many of the usages are different. :)
