Hermione Granger, new Hogwarts librarian, has inherited the unenviable task of archiving parts of Hogwarts' neglected archives. There, she uncovers a manuscript by Salazar Sytherin and finds that his injunctions against Muggles aren't exactly what everyone has always assumed them to be. Unable to quite believe it herself, no one else believes her until, in a bizarre set of circumstances, the author himself appears and begins to meddle in Hermione's life.

Reviews for Schrödinger's Snake
Brilliant update and what a lovely twist to the plot! Poor "Sal" is underestimating his two opponents though with regards of magical strength. Then again, the man only wanted to travel a few hours into the future and look where (when) he ended:-))Update again soon

He really didn't get things right, did he?! It'll be interesting to see how he changes his opinion of Severus and Hermione after more interactions with them.

I love your magic! Yes, magic must have been different in the time of the Founders. many spells & potions would not yet have been invented/discovered. It will be interesting for Slytherin to see the changes.

I imagine he'll be fascinated to find out what other new things have been developed since his time. And perhaps annoyed? Who knows! It's my co-author's turn next.

Very clever. You went in an unexpected direction, and I'm curious to see how this plays out. Thanks for an interesting story.

What a wonderful twist! Intriguing though the story line was before, the addition of 'Sal' looks to really open things up. I'm looking forward to what Slytherin makes of both his reputation and the present day school.

It'll be interesting to see what sort of measures Hermione and Snape take to try and keep him away from the rest of the school, particularly the students, at least until they've gotten some back story figured out!

I'm thoroughly enjoying this story, and looking forward to more. Curious to see how Slytherin will try to use Severus and Hermione's "relationship." And very amused by his initial perceptions of each.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Glad you're amused. I think that Salazar Slytherin probably had quite a cutting sense of humour, although this is the first time I've ever written him, so we'll see how I and my co-author manage with him!

“Just call him Sal,” I inhaled my wine! !!!!

Rut row Snape I think you have some heavy thinking to do!I like the idea that Hermione doesnt know how off putting she is to others. Very insightful.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
She never does seem to know, despite the fact that Ron, especially, is always losing his shirt at her. I like to think she doesn't care - better to be who you are than to try to please people being someone you're not! Thank you so much for the lovely review.

Very neat. What spell is Locomotor? I did't recognize it right off. I love it when the "current" residents of hogwarts interact with the founders.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
It's the spell used to move trunks, etc. without any manual labour! :-) Glad you like the concept.

If Snape doesnt want to assist then he doesnt get any of the glory. Hurpf. Go Granger go!

Too true! Still, I'm not sure he'll see it that way!

Well Salazar will certainly be feeling like he has smoked something odd when he sees the changes time has wrought!

Haha! Indeed. If only all his equipment hadn't vanished, eh?

Hee. I love the idea of Salazar running into Severus and Hermione.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
It's an interesting little clash, I think, considering Severus' on-going reign as Head of Slytherin and Hermione being a Gryffindor!

And here I thought Sal would be a ghost.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Oh no, no ghost for you! Salazar Slytherin in the flesh.

Awesome. I particularly like Hermione & Snape's interaction here (especially her struggling to keep up). And the changing POV.

Thank you so much! Yes, no 'third person limited' for us; we'll leave that to JKR. :-)

Oh, lovely chapter. Really liking Sal (love the nickname), though I wasn't expecting him quite so soon. And with the chapter ending there, I can't wait to see what happens next.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Well, we have this planned out as being a 12-chapter story, so he had to show up pretty soon! Don't worry, there'll be more development of Severus and Hermione alongside him. Glad you like Sal!
Holy Mother of Squee. I'm really not sure what I had in mind when I wrote the prompt, but this story certainly exceeds all my secret wishes so far. (course, I'm a library ho' -- so you had me at "archive." I can hardly wait to see what happens next, and although medieval history isn't my thing -- I tend towards the Renaissance, myself, I am enjoying the discourse in the reviews "Speak it! Speak it!")I do have one little gasp of horror to utter regarding library protocol. Hermione intends to put those manuscripts in the general collection?! Surely not! If not the Restricted Section, then there must be some sort of Special Collection room!
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
She would almost certainly have put them in the Restricted Section or bound them, perhaps, if they were completely inocuous? I hadn't really considered that! Glad you like what we've done with your prompt, though. :-)
Response from pokeystar (Reviewer)
It's not the content of the material that's a consideration actually, but whether it's a one of a kind or original manuscript that's more of a concern -- archives and special collections rooms are intended to increase security controls for valuable/ hard to replace materials. A proper archive makes you wear gloves to handle materials, too - in order to prevent damaging fragile materials. /library geekYes, I am LOVING it.

Wow, that was brilliant. Salazar's point of view is very well written and fits perfectly. His thoughts about Severus and Hermoine really made me laugh.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
I tried to imagine what it would be like to suddenly be confronted with them, not just as strangers in the modern world, but as strangers in the medieval world. Glad you enjoyed Sal, as there's lots more of him to come.

There seems to be an errant 'J' at the end there. An author's mark, perhaps? ;-)
Author's Response: Sadly not! Just a mistranslate between Word and the site!

This is very interesting. Even the reviews are interesting.---- re: the discussion of genetics. Magical talent doesn't seem to act like a recessive gene, else squibs would be as common as blonds and redheads among Caucasians. Squibs seem quite uncommon, more so than Muggleborns, and I've seen nothing that makes it seem less rare for a halfblood to be a squib, so magic isn't recessive. I see it as evolving, a genetic abnormality that is dominant, and frequently pops up as a mutation. (I think about genetics too much!)anyway, thanks for another cool chapter.
Response from pookah (Reviewer)
late last night (after too much sun yesterday) that blonds comment made sense, but it would be dark haired people, (even more common) that squibs would be as common as, if magic were recessive. Anyway, magic seems to be dominant. sorry for the goofy, heat-induced remark.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Ages ago, I seem to remember, I read an 'editorial' about Wizarding genetics on MuggleNet.com. Somebody had put a great deal of thought into this, including creating a table of possible allele combinations. I can't seem to find that one now, but there is also this:http://www.mugglenet.com/editorials/editorials/edit-wilkins01.shtmlThanks for reviewing! :)
Response from pookah (Reviewer)
That's an interesting article. It's most possible that JKR didn't think about genetics when writing these books. but if she did, it's possible she was thinking some sort of combination of genes, rather than straight mendelian single-gene-ruled traits. I like to think that the human race is evolving into wizards, but that would probably end up causing a lot of bloodshed before it was over. Thanks for giving me the article to read!

Ohh Yes, brain tease! I like the snarky Severus suddenly realizing that Hermine is right!

Interesting premise. I look forward to seeing what you do with this.I like your characterizations of Snape and Hermione.

Just wanted to say, now that your identity has been revealed, that I do hope you finish this story! I really like it.
Response from Heisenberg (Author of Schrödinger's Snake)
Dude, our identity was revealed? Where? I'm all confoozled - we never met the challenge deadline for this fic because the sshg exchange started, and now... Well, now we're both simply all over the place.Anyway, so glad you like the story, and I will finish it, but not until Soul Man (the weighty magnum opus, *sigh*) is complete. :-)
Response from mia madwyn (Reviewer)
Um, the name "Heisenberg" was revealed rather than "Hidden etc." Ooops! If you want to stay cloaked contact the mods and maybe they'll delete this!

This story continues to intrigue me. Looking forward to seeing an update.
This is such an interesting story! I remember Schrodinger from physics (*shudder* I was trying to forget that class actually), and the storyline seems like it will get interesting. I can't wait to read more!
