A dreamy realist, with a heart for bookish witches and ill-tempered wizards.
Reviews for On the Edge of the Night
Sev is really getting stretched thin now. Hopefully Hermione's digging will not cause any further problems for the poor bloke. (well, not too many, a few problems makes for good reading!)

Well, Hermione is putting the puzzle that is Severus Snape together right now, piece by piece... I don't think this can happen without problems on the way ;o) Thanks for reviewing. Sel.

Great chapter. Lucius' torn loyalties are portrayed beautifully.

Thank you :o))

Thank you :o))
Fabulous! Thanks so much for this wonderful chapter. The vulnerability of Lucius is much better than JKR could have done it even if she had wanted to. And Snape's empathy is unusually poignant.

*blushes*Oh, thank you. I am so happy that you like the way I portrayed Lucius. I have given it a lot of thought until I was completely satisfied with the scene. Thanks for reviewing, kyria :o) Sel.

I'm glad we got to see how Severus felt about that first night with Hermione. Having him experience it through a pensieve was brilliant.

Thank you, I am glad you like my way to let Severus experience the truth and thanks for letting me know. Sel.

Oh, no. I had hoped that he wouldn't realize it was her until later...
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Well, I had a long struggle with myself how and when Severus will learn what has happened that night. And as you will see, Severus needs to know early, because he needs a perception shift. If he would believe the promise to be Lilys his 'love' would only have grown stronger, don't you think? I hope I haven't spoiled the plot completely for you now. Thanks for revieiwng. Sel.
This is so sweet and the tenderness that Hermione showed Severus is so deeply touching. and poor Severus. You could almost feel the apin he was going through. Very well written.
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
I think Hermione is a very caring and compassionate person, whose heart reaches out for Severus in this moment. It will change her perception of him completely. Well, and Severus... we will see his point of view and more of his feelings in the next chapter, which I decided to write after a lot of support from my lovely reviewers *winks* Sel.
Oh what a one-shot - I loved the set-up of the characters and the situation. I would even love to read more - this was good writing and I enjoyed it.
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Merci! After a lot of wonderful encouragement I have decided to expand the one shot... the second chapter is already with my beta. Sel.

Very touching. You convey Hermione's distress at being forced to lie in order to comfort Severus so well.
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Thank you :-) I am glad I could portray her distress believable for you. It was my first try at angst ;-) Sel.
*nudges* I think she should keep her promise and that we should read about it.Great story, it seems to beg for an extension, but I could see it staying as a one shot to make you wonder as well.

*winks* You will, you will. There has been a lot of encouragement and nagging to expand this one shot. And who am I to deny such a request.... ;-) The second chapter is with my beta right now. Sel.

Very poignant and well-written. I don't know who I felt worse for, her or Snape. She can't say a word to him about this when he's better, and keeping a secret like this is an awful burden.
Author's Response: Thank you :-) Well, I agree it is a dreadful situation for Hermione to keep this secret, but I think it needs such a signifcant moment of truth for a canon!Hermione to see the man behind the Potions master's mask. As well as it needs time and change for a canon!Snape to forget Lily someday. Sel.
Aw, that was really sweet. JKR never gave any details as to what happens at the Death Eater meets, so it's wide open. Good job.
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Thank you :-) And thanks for reviewing. Sel.
I enjoy your story so much. I love the steady build up - it's really wonderful. I love the longer stories who really focus on making a back history between the characters. Although, it does prove to be rather torturous when I'm waiting for updates. LOL. I can't wait to see what happens after this. You really cut a long timeline for yourself, starting at the fifth book, and really it goes downhill for Snape from here. I hope you're able to continue on this huge endeavor because I'll certainly be here to read it! :)
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Aaaww. Thank you so much. I am thrilled you like my little WIP-of-doom :))) Although I am a little behind my self-appointed update-schedule, I finally finished the next chapter. It really tried to kill me for a while, but now it is off to the first beta :)) Thank you so much for leaving a review. It really helps to read such lovely feedback when one is once again wrestling with the muse ;) ~Sel.
This has been so much to love about this fic that I couldn't possibly list them all here. You characterizations, not only of Severus and Hermione, but of the supporting cast, as well, have been incredibly believable. You've managed to maintain the integrity of JKR's original plot, while adding in this completely different concept of interractions between Severus and Hermione.I think you've done a magnificent job in building that connection between them, and of gradually dealing with the Lily-obsession rather than just making it go away all on it's own. I am incredibly curious about the prophecy regarding Severus that he does not know about. I do hope we'll get to find out what it is, and I hope that Dumbledore, manipulator that he is, hasn't made the wrong choice in keeping it from him.I'm very excited to see where you take this as we head into HBP, so please do update again soon!
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Aaaaww, thank you so much. I know I am late with my response, but thank you, I am so thrilled you like the story so far, and that you even find the supporting cast convincing. I have given them quite a lot of work, so I can't tell you how much it means to know that it wasn't in vain :))))I can't obviously say much about the prophecy, but I can say that Hermione has already developed some own ideas about it.I finished the next chapter last night and it is now of to the first beta, therefore, more is soon to come :)))~Sel.
Good Lord! Bella is running her mouth to the Dark Lord, Lucius is sending Severus to a brothel, Sirius is being insulting, and now Minerva is injured. If it weren't for bad luck, Severus would have had no luck at all on this day. And the tension builds. Thanks for another great chapter!Beth
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Well, I had a hard time deciding on Lucius' advice for Severus. But I don't think that Voldemort would have believed Severus' word alone that "[...] he agreed that there were other women, of purer blood, worthier of him."Therefore, it was a necessary plotpoint but I really had some difficulty writing it... ~Sel.
Very interesting take with the dream. Is it supposed to be some kind of premonition (dare I say prophecy) that will gradually continue to be reveled through dream? Is this what Dumbledore and Minerva were alluding to in the last chapter? The pair of them obviously care for the other beyond a student-teacher capacity, but neither is (wanting to) looking further into it - yet. Looking forward to seeing what happens next!
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Of course they do care beyond that already, but mostly in the sense of worrying for the other. However, it is a first step after all ;))I can't say much about the Dumbledore/Minerva-scene, but I think the dream gives some fine clues regarding Hermione's feelings...Thank you so much for leaving a review :))) ~Sel.
compelling story! love your use of canon. can't wait to read more... :)

Outside the Pensieve, next to Snape’s still form, Dobby shook his head sadly, collecting the broken glass from the floor. This is quite possibly one of the most tear-jerking scenes I've ever read in a SSHG story. I broke my heart. This chapter has some damned fine writing, Sel.Beth
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
You know, this is one of the most wonderful things to a writer, because knowing that your heart broke means that the fine woven web of words has reached its aim ;)) Thank you so much for letting me know :)))
I love the interchange Hermione had with Professor Snape in the apothecary. His immediate concern for her when she said she was there for Mertlap tentacles warmed my heart. But when Dobby brought her the package from him I was thrilled.
I'm so sorry that Hermione's discovery that Harry's mother and Severus had taken all their classes together has brought her such anguish. But it was bound to upset her. No matter how much she tells herself that her interest in his wellbeing is only because of how hard he fights for them as a spy, it is becoming clearer each day that it is a much more personal reason. And Severus is having the same epiphany about her. With time and circumstance, it will become as immutable as the Law of Gravity.
Well done.
Beth
Wow! Severus has relived the time in the kitchen at Grimmauld Place and knows without a doubt how sincere Hermione's actions on his behalf really were. And he has found out that the ranks of the Death Eaters will be expanded to include those who had been imprisoned in Azkaban. Oh joy. Bellatrix will be back.Lucius is now torn with certain knowledge that one day he will not be able to do the Dark Lord's bidding to suit him, and that day will be a death sentence for his family. I like that you have given us a great background for the Unbreakable Vow that Severus will make to Narcissa. How much thinner can Severus be stretched?Great chapter! I'm looking forward to finding out what Hermione discovers in her project for extra credit. This story continues to get better and better.Beth

I always thought that Lucius isn't a character that could be judge by a black and white reasoning. He is - and there is no denying - a man who uses the dark side of power, but he also loves his family and would do all to protect them. ~Sel.
His distress at Draco taking the Mark is almost palpable. :)
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
I fear seeing a young man like Draco make the same mistake that he did, has to be very hurt. Thank you so much for leaving a review :)) ~Sel.
You really hit a home run with this chapter! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.I love the way we get to not only hear what they are saying, but we get to know what they are thinking, as well. Severus' thoughts about Hermione at the end of this chapter made me want to cheer. I love your Severus, your Hermione, and your story.Five stars aren't nearly enough.Beth
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
Aaaww, thank you. I am glad you liked it. ~Sel.
I can't tell you how moving this chapter was to me. I felt so sorry for Severus when he brought his and Lily's hand to his lips and felt... nothing but cold. My heart broke for him then and there, and I just wanted to put my arm around him and tell him that there was someone who would care for him. Just not Lily. I could have kissed Dumbledore when he told Severus that it was Hermione who had found him and Flooed the Headmaster to tell him how hurt he was and needed help.I don't know how Severus will react when he sees Hermione for the first time since finding out that it was she who had tended to him and promised to be there for him whenever he needed her. This is only the second chapter, and I'm already hooked!Beth
Response from selinabln (Author of On the Edge of the Night)
I am so glad the chapter touched a chord with you. It really, really hurt to write. And I am so pleased to know that you liked my decision to have Dumbledore reveal to Severus that it was Hermione after all. Some readers were quite disappointed with me because of that... ~Sel.
