He stood glowering at the girl… no, woman, who had the audacity to tell him to get on with his life. Yet he appreciated the irony, considering he had just been telling her to get on with hers.
“Perhaps you are right, and we should both take a page from each other’s books and get off the pot, so to speak.”
Hermione was still crouched on the wall, and he wondered if she was still thinking about ending it all.
“So, Ms. Granger, what do you think? Should we take advantage of our positions as heroes of the wizarding world?"
26.
Hermione looked over the edge as she tried to decide what she really wanted for her life. Her true friends had passed on, dying for a cause they believed in and for her. How can I throw such a gift away? Looking back over at Snape, she wished she could read the darkness in his eyes.
“It’s something to consider I imagine. But what about you? What are you going to do? There is no need for you to remain here if you don’t want to be. The students here must still be trying. I doubt your temper has improved.”
27.
Snape just crossed his arms and scowled at her. “Still the know-it-all I see. Pity, I had hoped that at least that much would have changed since you grew up.” Immediately, he wished he could take back the harsh words as he watched with hidden horror—Hermione moved back, further out to the ledge. A stone lost.
Inwardly, he cursed his caustic nature. I doubt insulting a person considering suicide is considered good form. Gritting his teeth, he wondered how he was going to get her confidence back. Hermione looked over the edge wistfully and hummed with a sing-song voice.

“It would be easier for both of us if I jumped. You’re right, of course. I haven’t changed; I am still the bushy haired know-it-all. The only thing that keeps me from being bucktoothed is that I let Madam Pomfrey fix them.” Her voice flattened out, sounding dead.
“Leave, Snape. You tried your best, but managed to only prove their point. I am of no use to anyone anymore. I don’t even have friends who will defend me.” She sighed, feeling the last of her hope seep away. Severus was shocked at the power his words still had on her.

"I am just like you, you know. A wounded soul who needs to move on, but I don't want to do it alone, alone hurts more."Such a simple statement of such an enormous reality! They watched the sun rise again over the horizon. The very best way to start a new day, or a new life.

I am glad you liked it, sometimes just not being alone helps more than anything else

A stone lost. The power of a few hasty words. A thoughtless, unintended loss. Severus was shocked at the power his words still had on her. They still do have power. Power to persuade as well as to hurt.
“We didn’t commit a crime for surviving, you know.”Easier to say than to believe. Survivor's guilt can be insidious. Snape may have forgiven himself for Dumbledore's death, but there is so much more guilt ready to crush him under its weight. It seems they have inadvertantly switched places. Who is saving whom now?
“I came close, but Professor McGonagall beat me to it. She’s really scary sometimes.”Ah, then he had at least two strong witches ready to plead his case and defend what was left of his honor. Did he know that already? It seems that it would make quite the difference to Snape to have someone rush to his defense.
“Please, Ms. Granger, may I have a stone? Just a stone.”Who could deny that request from a man who had given so much? Is it curiousity or hope? Does it matter which it is?“Have you forgiven yourself?”Undoubtedly the most difficult question she could have asled.
Quite understandable that his approval would throw her for a loop. They are all so used to their simplistic black & white image of him. He could never approve of anyone; could he? It is appropriate that he should be the one to recognize how much had been asked of them as so much had been asked of him.
“Fine then, a compromise. Just come back one stone. That is all I ask.”I can't think of a better man to talk someone in from a ledge. Such a simple request. Just one stone.

Hermione has lost all those she leaned on for suppport? And even succeeding at her profession only gains her ridicule? No wonder she is out on a ledge.

Yep, it would drive anyone to the end of their rope

I liked your story! I usually don't read anything with suicide warnings, but wanted to see what the title meant and got hooked. [Well, I cheated and looked at the end before getting TOO hooked, if you know what I mean.] I thought you captured the feelings of despair and loneliness very well, that feeling that somewhere else -- anywhere else -- is better, when it hurts too much to keep trying. Hope you'll keep writing -- and please make the endings happy for the happy ending junkies like me! Thanks for your work!
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
Glad you liked it. I am a happy ending junkie too. I think the worst I can write is a hopeful ending.
I have no fascination for suicide, and find most fiction based on it trite, stupid, or both. But yours is the first to do some justice to the thought. I must say, the last chapter is very lame and weak, considering how strong the first ones were. Put this away, think about it, and then try to write the true ending.
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
There might be more to come. As someone who has dealt with suicide first hand sometimes the only way to prevent it is to stop and do nothing. Thank you for your comments
Whew. I was afraid that they'd both decide to jump together. LOL. Thank you.
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
I wondered what they would do with them both sitting there but thankfully they just told me to go away and they were going to watch the sunrise.
I'm so glad for the happy ending, I was worried at one point they were going to go over together Nicely done
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
I must confess that at one point I thought they would jump too

Good story, but where is the romance?
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
Not all romance is fireworks. Sometimes it's more subtle
um...this isn't done is it?
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
Yep it really is the last chapter was submitted today and should be up whenever our lovely Admins can go through it. Hope you like the ending
I'm really enjoying this story. I like the theme carried throughout of the stones, too. And I also like how you manage to keep the suspense going. Just don't let it go on too long! Great job! :)
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
Last chapter is in queue glad you have likes this
One step foward, two steps back... and it's not as if Hermione has much room to step back.Don't do it! Have Snape grab her or something, don't kill her.Talk about a cliffhanger.
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
Sorry about the cliff hanger the end is nigh
No dont jump Hermione!
Severus think fast!
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
Ahhhh can't tell you what's going to happen but the end is in queue

Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
I know right now she isn't sure what's going to happen More to come already in queue
Fascinating story! I look forward to read more of it.
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
Thanks more in the queue
I really like this story. It's pain calling to pain I gues. And these two have it in spades. I can't wait for the next update! GG
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
aww thanks I have the final two installments done more to come
Very moving story. Their despair is almost tangible.
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
I honestly think it's a case of pain recognizing pain and then deciding what to do about it
Oh yay! What a lovely ending. I like that you left it so that they understood each other.
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
yeah I think that is the only place good things can begin
'May I have a stone?'. There was so much more asked and implied by it; I think you are doing a wonderful job of this, and although I suspect there won't be much more to come, I will still be looking forward to the next update.
Response from Anijade (Author of One Stone)
Thanks so much. I have no idea how much more is comning as I have allowed the characters to take control and this is their story. So far there are 30 parts written
Response from DawnEB (Reviewer)
