Two little wizards and one little witch meet in the Hogwarts Express on their way to their first school term. This story can stand alone, with no reference to any other fanfiction; however, it has acquired a bit of a universe of its own :)

Mostly Harmless! Though I have to admit, I'm even stranger than I appear. ;-) There's a pile of unbeta'd stuff on my LJ (dracfic) if you're interested in Raw, Untamed, fanfic.
Believe it or not, "How Argus Filch Got Wild, Got Laid, and Got His Magic" has been rec'ed by Know It Alls! It's true! They gave me this pretty lil' ribbon and everything! And in March 2007, they saw fit to likewise reccommend (as an antidote to angst) the story that started it all, 'Courtesy of Your Fairy God-Jarvey'--just in time for the first anniversary of that story's posting! *hugs Harm*
(I also have to admit that 'mostly harmless' may not be the most apt description of a member of the Mad Chatters...)
Finally, I just have to say... Storyville. If you were there, you know what I mean.Reviews for A Credit to Their Houses
“Anyone that short, who spoke that rudely, probably stood a fair chance of being thrashed.”
Short? What difference does size make when you’re a wizard? As a pureblood raised entirely in the wizarding world, Scorpius would automatically think in terms of magical strength, not physical size.
P.S. I’m glad to hear that Hagrid’s title is back to “Mister.” He was a horrible professor.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Logically, size shouldn't matter for magic users. Canonically, we see over and over that size seems to have just as much a psychological effect for wizards as for Muggles. Take it up with J.K. Rowling! LOL
Oooh! I have a feeling that there is more to those two wands than just what you have told us here! I can't wait to read more! And I am glad that James comes through for his younger brother when it really counts. Your characters are so compelling and likeable - with the possible exception of Fred. I hope that Molly sorts him out, I don't want him to end up completely nasty!
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thank you kindly! And now I am really beginning to wonder if there is a leak in the internet which is sprinkling my story notes about. LOL!(We shall have to see what manner of corrective measures the family can devise vis-a-vis Fred.)
Bloody brilliant! Now I am even more curious if they'll let themself all sorted in Slytherin.. And if the sorting still is alphabetically it seems Scorius is the one to take the decision. And that Fred jr definitely needs to be stopped. Just wondering if his hatred is his own (wich is always possible of course) or that his father never has fully recovered from loosing his brother.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Poor Scorpius does, indeed, have to take the lead. There may be an interesting conversation with the Hat in his future.re: Fred--I am beginning to wonder if you are somehow spying on my story notes... LOL!A family meeting about Fred is more likely than not in the offing. I shall try to see if I can surprise you for once.
Response from orlando switch (Reviewer)
I solemly swear that - although I am up to no good - I am definitely not spying on your story notes, LOL! But the funny thing is, you are at least the 3rd or 4th author that suspects me of doing so.. Apparently there are stories that I like in a way that I am somehow able to intuitively gather knowledge from them and extrapolate that to the next installment...I guess??
O and another thing: Scorpius has Draco's old wand but I guess he doesn't know that is the wand with which Harry killded Voldy. It must mean something that this wand fits Scorpius, he seems to be a nice blend of both his fathers. And I love Asteria's influence as well. It's so nice she is more loyal to Draco than to Daphne.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Re: wands-- We're getting to that. Be patient. The wolf in Asteria has chosen her pack, and she will defend her both of her 'adopted cubs' to the death if need be. No one had better mess with either Draco or Scorpius.
Al really is a dear and all Harry over again and Rose seems to me already a bit further into puberty than the boys are, with her statement about the peanutbutter - of which I can imagine it's not a statement at all from Hermione but just something she likes to eat (and healthy, unsweetened). It's understandable that something from Hermione's childhood, in this case peanutbutter, would for her be something integrated in her life as a witch. While for Rose it's equally understandable that it feels for her like: we are making a muggle statement by eating peanutbutter. - This is the kind of eye for detail I so love about your story. And Rose is wonderful here, must have inherited Hermione's loyalty.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
I wasn't sure that anyone would pick up on Rose & the peanutbutter! Thank you so much for noticing all these things; I like to add these little dots that make up the bigger image, but I usually expect that they will only regiester on an intuitive level.
Your attention to detail is amazing. The voices of all 3 children are so spot on. especially if we extrapolate it to what we know about their parents and the way we can expect things to be at their homes. The way you let Scorpius mirror Harry's first trip to Hogwarts in his way to make sense of everyting around him is so touching. It seems Scorpius is raised with a mixture of old fashionedness and silence about the past and the war and that added to the fact he is a single child (as far as he knows :) makes the way he tries to interprete the world around him and his confusion about social interaction both hilarious, tragic and endearing.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thank you very much! I imagined Scorpius, in some ways, as being raised in greater isolation than Harry, albeit by a loving and caring family. It leaves him both curiously thoughtful and ever so slightly clueless.
What a charming child is your Scorpius. I instantly wish him a much better time at Hogwarts than his father had.. with some real friends.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
I believe we may be able to accomodate you in that regard.
The Weasleys and the Potters are both related to the Blacks, and Scorpius is a Black through his grandmother Narcissa, so they're all cousins after all.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Indeed; it's just not a connection that would immediately come to the mind of the average 11-year-old (or even the above-average 11-year-old!) I'm sure that Al prefers his version of logic in any event. Thank you for reviewing!
l love the way Al, Scorpius and Rose are bonding. I don't know if I am looking forward to them finding out the true nature of their realationship, or not.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Glad you are enjoying them! Truth of the matter is, I do believe Al is the only one of the three who is the right combination of clever, nosy, and intuitive enough to suss it out... and since Al prefers his own version of reality, I doubt he would risk distubring the status quo by sharing his findings. <--objective reality is off-topic in Al's world
That was a lovely scene - how heart felt friendship begins and bonds are forged. Just love your stories about Al and hisgang and of course,Snape(my favourite hero)
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thank you kindly! Snape doesn't get to play the same role in this Next Gen universe as he does in the original Al & Scorp show, but he may have one more cameo yet before I finish this version. ...oh, wait. I am only a painting. Damn...
What a wonderful piece of "Kid logic" birthday twins .
Looking forward to the sorting, I wonder what house they will be in .
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Al's logic is such that one sort of wonders if Luna should have been his godmother rather than Lily's! Arriving at the Sorting without turning this into a novel is proving somewhat trickier than originally estimated... wish me luck
Oh, I really like the start of this story! I am eager to read more about Scorpius and his adventures, and I like this little bit of a view of his home life.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thank you kindly for reviewing! So far I am having a spot of trouble getting past chapter 3, so if you could spare a good wish or two, it would also be appreciated
Very realistic and energetic end! Quite fitting. But... Is it possible al has ADHD? I have ADHD but it is the first time I have ever thought a fictional character has ADHD.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Al is very definitely high energy; actually, given the spectrum of ADHD symptoms, upon reflection I think it's likely that James, with his impulsivity and inclination to short-term planning, might merit an ADHD diagnosis. It's funny; sometimes I find that my characters have lives of their own that I only gradually discover as I write about them!

Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Actually I didn't get the clue it was Severus till this chapter. Why is this story so short? U sure... Sighs...
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
LOL It actually took me a year to get as far as I did on this one, so I was beyond relieved to come up with an ending, any ending, for it! I'm glad you enjoyed it.
I find your story even a single chap is better at eliciting gurgly laughs from me than 9gag! "“Not on your Nelly,” Rose said. " indeed!
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
And my horizons are expanded once again... After seeing 9gag, I think Icanhazcheezeburger must be some sort of bacteria, breaking off mutated cells everywhere. LOL!
Such a brill chapter! "“Did you?” Lysander asked. Scorpius was really only pretending he could guess which one it was, but it was better than calling each of them Lysander-or-Lorcan every time one spoke, even if only in his mind."
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thank you! (For lack of a pair of Lovegood-Scamander twins)
"“Would you? Trade, I mean,” Scorpius said. He spared a moment to worry about his grammar. " - loved the dialogue between the children and the other with the hufflepuff twins. Not sure what I did to deserve being privvy to your writing. This is the third time I have read this story and i enjoy it all the more after realising this was written by the author of drapunzel. I really like grandchildren fics... Like what you have done. I used to specifically look out for them! Any more plot bunnies for this generation to exorcise? If so, I will be definitely queuing to read it!

Thanks very kindly! As a matter of fact, there are two sequels to this already posted, and a third that I just began posting today. (I can make no promises about the many, MANY others lurking unfinished in my files except that it takes me years to abandon a fic, and these are nowhere near that old.) I'd stay and chat longer, but some lovely person has left me so many reviews I scarcely know what to answer first.
Happy dance! I have been waiting for this story, ever since I finished "In Your Debt".Scorpius is a real sweetie, there is a lot of his father in him. I can't wait for more.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thank you! er... I hope you don't mind waiting a bit longer. I'm slightly stuck for a way to get to the ending that I already have written!
don't worry, take your time. RL trumps FF. always appreciate any updates though :)
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thank you kindly! E[pilogue is now up, as well as a bit of a RL update on dracfic (my livejournal) for all those who offered their good wishes.
thnk for the chapie.. hope everything is okay with the family emergency! update, when u can.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thanks very much for reviewing--In addition to the epilogue, there's a bit of a RL update on dracfic (my livejournal) for all those who offered their good wishes.
This is such a charming story! I have enjoyed seeing Scorpius blossoming in the attentions of Al, and seeing how Rose goes along with them, albeit with exasperation and resignation. I really like the connections that they make, and I enjoy your 'mystery' portrait, too. Nicely done!
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
Thank you kindly! While the epilgoue finishes this particular story, there are a few other side stories lurking in the hard drive, awaiting opportunity and inspiration to collaborate on their completion.
Very sorry to hear about the family medical emergency. Hope it proves to be minor or easily solvable. But I'm equally glad to hear there's going to be more--and I hope you continue to show us how these three friends burnish the reputation of Slytherin, as I'm sure they will. (Don't bother to answer this, please. I understand you have other priorities.)

I don't know whether I left a review when I read this chapter the first time--but I love this story. The idea of having it narrated through Scorpius's clueless point of view makes for a really amusing perspective on things we know much more about than he does. And your phrase, "the Great Hall was revealed and the acceptable gaping commenced," pleased me very much. I do hope the next chapter is not a final epilogue. (The summary says "not complete") I really want to see more of how these kids develop.
Response from dracontia (Author of A Credit to Their Houses)
While the epilogue is the end of this story, there is a bit more to be said about the children (and their parents) that is taking shape, a bit at a time, in several other stories. Thanks very much for reviewing!
