When Snape arrives at Malfoy Manor and saves Hermione from torture, he ends up seeing her in a different light. A tale of love, obsession, and learning to let go, told in three parts. Not a stereotypical romance.

I'm a fan of the Harry Potter series. My favourite character is Severus Snape. Complex, intelligent and sexy, he is the tragic hero of the series. I hate how JK Rowling killed him off in Deathly Hallows, and it was what inspired me to write my first ever fanfiction.
I mostly read SS/OC and SS/HG, but occasionally other pieces that catch my attention. I don't like stories that drag on and on without much happening and rarely read anything over 100,000 words unless it is very good. I'm quite forgiving about typos and punctuation errors, but poor style or grammar puts me off straight away, as does OOC. I like realism and don't fancy excessive time travel, de-aging, obscure family links and Snape the vampire stories.
About me:
I am a thirty-something female and mother of two boys. I am German and hence not writing in my mother tongue.
All my stories are totally canon compliant. Not that I mind AU, I just enjoy exploiting the many gaping holes JKR has left us fanfiction authors!
My other stories at Sycophant Hex and Fanfiction.net:
Flying With The Raven is set during HBP and DH and pairs Snape with an adult OC who is on a par with him. It is a Snape survival story, offering plenty of romantic fantasy fodder. Snape's characterisation focuses more on his noble side, prickly shell notwithstanding. Yes, this is self-insertion, but I am willing to share if I get a few reviews in return. ;-)
Wishing On A Star is a post-DH story pairing Snape and Sinistra and is still work in progress (I know it's been a few months since I updated, but be assured I will never abandon this story!). Snape is a more flawed character here than in FWTR. And it won't be until he can stop blaming unfavourable circumstances and other people for his misery that he will change and find happiness.

Wait, I got tripped up on the line about Harry Ron and Hermione going to a Noodle Bar in Greenwich. You mean America Greenwich? New York? Connecticut? And what's a Noodle Bar? I've never heard that term before.
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Hiya - it's Greenwich the south-east London borough, a rather picturesque part of London with a bit of a university town feel. A noodle bar is a simple asian style restaurant specialising in noodle dishes (sooups, fried etc) where customers often sit on simple wood benches. They are very popular over here, and in Greewich there are several. :-)
Response from Severus49 (Reviewer)
Oh, okay, thanks for clarifying! We have plenty of chinese (read that as Americanized asian-type) restaurants and take-out joints, but nothing sounding like what you've described.
I very much enjoyed your story, especially the ending where I was left with a feeling of hope for them both. Thank you for sharing!!
Very different from other SSHG and I do believe I like it! Ambiguous ending makes me hopeful for the future.
You really brought out their yearning in this!
OUCH! Positively brilliant. I don't think anyone's written the reasons behind Hermione's Potions essay scores this well before. (At least not that I've read, and I've read quite a few). I'm eagerly awaiting the final chapter to hit the head of the queue.
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks so much for reviewing again. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter. Not sure what Hermione's potions scores were like in canon, but Snape does seem to have a loathing towards her that is totally uncalled for.
Response from Ravensblood (Reviewer)
I like your reasons better than the 'you're a Muggleborn and I can't show you any favoritism'
This is absolutely captivating. (huh. no pun intended..) I've only just finished the first chapter and am going to eagerly dive into the second!
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks so much for reading and reviewing. I hope you will continue to read and enjoy the other five chapters.
Excellet work.. you've kept Severus so well in character, not something many writers in this genre can achieve, keep up the excellent work, I look forward to reading Chapter two. =)

Thanks so much for your review. I'm glad you like the characterisation of Snape and hope you'll continue reading.
Oh brother, reality is a real b$%#h sometimes. Excellent chapter! :D
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
LOL, thanks for reviewing, glad you enjoyed it!
I can completely sympathize with Hermione's hurt feelings about her work not receiving the marks it was worth. As for Snape, it's so sad that he's so fixated on the illusion of his perfect Lily that he'll do whatever it takes to protect her, even from an innocent, unknowing academic rival.
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks for reading and reviewing again, much appreciated! Yes, he should really be above that, but then he doesn't even realise why he is doing it. Canon Snape certainly comes across as outrageously unfair for a teacher.
Hermione's perfectionism and earnestness really shine through in this chapter. as does the pain of her unrequited feelings for her professor. Nicely done.
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks for reviewing! Glad you like the picture of Hermione so far.
I like that Snape hid the book away from Umbridge. And he has to keep up appearances with Muggle-borns. Her reminding him of Lily only puts the nails in the coffin.
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks for reviewing. Snape - Umbridge is somehow very amusing to write, I'm glad you enjoyed it, too.
Poor Hermione! Competing with a woman who was pretty much deified by Snape is impossible!
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks for reviewing! Yep it's pretty much hopeless, but then she has no real hope of anything happening between them anyway!
Oh! How very profound that last sentence was! And, like Hermione, I felt her indignation was very justified... Only to find myself unable to fault Snape's stated reasoning behind giving her the grades he did. I wonder if his ability to twist the truth and weave impeccable webs of deceit has rendered it impossible for even him to admit his real, underlying reasons for his treatment of Hermione, if only to himself...
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks so much for your review. I think you've made a great point in that Snape is so good at creating delusions he effortlessly deludes himself. I hadn't yet thought of it that way!
This is such an intriguing beginning! I love how you portray Hermione, especially the very teenage-y, melodramatic way she equates a sweet, naive crush to being "in love". I can't wait to read the next chapter!
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks for reviewing! Yes, she is still very naive at this stage. The characterisation will change as she grows older.
Awe :( poor Hermione... and poor Severus, constantly haunted by the unworthy Lily. Great work though, can't wait for the next udate!
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks for reviewing again, much appreciated! Hermione might have an unhealthy crush on a teacher, but it's nothing compared to Snape's lifelong obsession with Lily...
I really like the subtle direction of this story :) It is very well written and I find that so far it really strikes true with the characters! Great Work!
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks for your review! I'm glad you feel the characters are true and hope you continue reading.
This is an interesting story. I can identify with Hermione's sense of unfairness regarding her marks in Potions, not that I was an exceptional student or anything. But I think I expected a grade on my school work based on my answers as well as how I compared with my classmates. Grading an individual based on what one is capable of, to stretch the mind and encourage growth - that's what Prof Snape is doing for Hermione. She'll thank him for this at some point, just not right now. But then again, maybe not, if she were to know of his "unconscious" resentment regarding Hermione's similarity to Lilly. Hmmm.So far, you seem to be laying a good foundation for a very good read. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to more.
Response from herbologist (Author of Beyond Captivation)
Thanks so much for your great review!Yes, in a way he is pushing her on to new levels and to go beyond just the books, but in her mind it is just blatantly unfair and completely unreasonable (and I can sympathise).
So far, so good.
I really like it. It's much more realistic then some of the stories I've read.
This is a well written and realistic story of my favorite couple, and while I love to see them end up together, this is completely satisfying because they both get a sense of closure and find a new path for their lives that will lead, I am sure, to happiness for each of them.
Thank you for posting this. It's been a real pleasure to read!

Snape is alive! And he and Hermione are talking. Given your "What to expect" statement at the beginning of the story I have no idea what to expect, but I'm really glad he survived!
Gotta go to the next chapter to find out.
