Reviews for The Scent of Magic
What an intriguing start! I never got to this in the Exchange but am positively entranced. Such a unique conceit. The little I know of BPAL is entirely from LJ, and so I'm quite excited to learn about the scents along with your take on Severus and Hermione's relationship. Also, the detail about how alchemists are typically romantically involved? Genius.

Thank you for remembering my story and coming over here to read it now. I'm thrilled that you found the little twist regarding alchemists fitting. I had lots of fun making up and writing all that magical perfume lore.
hehe, love the invisible lotus =) really adds something special and creative to your fiction

Thank you for your kind words.
Beautiful imagery! An absolutely wonderful story!!!You know, I actually have BPAL saved in my favorite file on my computer. I was looking for potion bottles a few years ago, and ran across their website! Of course, being the good "Mrs. Snape" that I am, I saved the website. Little did I know that one day while looking for new stories to read, I would come across your story that referenced the business! Great minds think alike, eh?

Their scents are also simply wonderful. And a true inspiration, as this story proves. Thank you for your kind words.
This really was absolutely gorgeous. I've a horrid sense of smell, have never ordered anything from BPAL (although I've desperately wanted to, but why bother since I can't smell it?) and I STILL thoroughly enjoyed how well you wove that in. The dinner and Hermione's diary entries were FANTASTIC.VERY well done!

Thank you for your kind words. I'm so happy that the story worked so well for you in spite of the fact that you're not into scents. :-)
loved it - very emotional and unique

lovely!!! I found your story on day/chapter 5 and though it's taken me a few days to "catch up". I've really appreciated it. Thank you for all your work and dedication. It's a truly unique take on the whole potion master/mistress relationship.

Perfect ending. :)

Thank you for reading the story again, and for your kind words. I'm thrilled you enjoyed it the second time around, too.
Love the way she chose the scents randomly for the bubble bath and mirrored what he smelled in the Amortentia. And the lotus blossom. :)

I strongly believe in synchronicity even in our Muggle lives ... there are some things that just don't feel like coincidences. And in a magical world, I expect them to feel even more magical!
The question that remains is why did Lucius give her the perfume? Is he that good a friend to Severus, or does he have an ulterior motive? :)
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
Who knows what Lucius motivations are ... I think he will always remain an ambiguous character, so maybe a bit of both and then some?
The Perfume Dinner sounds amazing. :)
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
I've cooked it minus the magical scents, and it is a really wonderful menu. :-)
Loved it. It captured me and wouldn't let me go untill I finished it :)

Makes me want to go to the May Fair myself. And that BPAL fragrance sounds wonderful. :)

We need those magical Portkeys that transport us into our favourite scenes NOW!
Draco is a really cool character in this. :)
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
Draco has a way of sneaking into my stories ...
"Lurking outside, indigo tendrils of the small hours twine around his neck." That phrase is so evocative. :)
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
*beams* Thank you! Obviously, I wanted to write a lush story ... but such phrases don't always work, and never work for all readers, so I'm really happy to hear that this one was effective for you.
I can see Snape as a Perfume Master. :)
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
Thank you for reading the story for a second time! That's a really wonderful compliment. :-)
Wonderful story, the descriptions were amazing, and made me want to smell everything more carefully. it made me want to analyze new scents and my own reactions to them.As in Perfume, the story was predicated on being able to convey specific scents, but unlike the film, you did not have the imagery to supplement your text. In many ways it is a more impressive feat because of the lack of visuals. Despite the lack of images, your story was incredibly visceral and thoroughly enjoyable.thanks so much for writing!

Thank YOU for reading and for taking the time to leave such a kind, detailed comment. I'm thrilled to hear that my words came alive for you that way.
I've read a few really good stories this year, but this one has been by far the most riveting, the most enjoyable, and the most bestest written one. Absolutely love it, and I have no doubt I will return to it many times.
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
*BLUSH* That is high praise indeed! Such a compliment from someone who gets to read so many fanfic stories each year is really, really wonderful. Thank you! I'm thrilled you love the story so much. And when I'm done with the illustrations and the ebook, I'll send you a copy!
Uh huh. So Lucius is *NOT* out to seduce her. He's out to get her to realise her feelings for Severus, methinks. And I bet he's got the missing smell of Amortentia in that bottle, too.
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
Not going to give things away, but you have some very good ideas there! Thank you for reading, and even more for taking the time to leave a comment! I'm glad you enjoy the story so far.
Enchanting! :)

This was just a lovely piece. It has the elegance of Susskind's descriptions of scent and its influence on human beings without the disturbing themes and images of Perfume. I really loved a lot.

Beautiful story from beginning to end...part of me wishes it could just go on and on forever, but that would prevent you from writing other things and that's no good either! So many questions left still to the reader's imagination, regarding Lucius and Mystery, that they could possibly steal an entire story just for themselves--they certainly seem as though they could be a good match for each other. I choose to think that Lucius was acting the friend after all, but did it in his usual underhanded way so as to avoid more than the usual amount of suspicion should he behave markedly different from his norm! Thanks for sharing this story with us all, and I look forward to more in the future!
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
Thank you for your kind words! I'm so happy you enjoyed the story so much, and also that you're left with the desire for more. That's one of the best compliments an author can receive. Concerning Mystery, I'm actually rather tempted to use her for an original work. She's such an intriguing character!
Yowch. She needs to 'fess up.
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
That would be smart. But very scary.
Could Lucius have seen what Hermione and Severus couldn't? that they were made for each other? And as Severus' oldest friend, he acted out of friendship, that Severus might experience what he and Narcissa shared? I like to think so. I like to think that Lucius is not as horrible as JKR made him out to be. Of course, the same could be said for Severus. I keep telling myself that the story was all seen through Harry's eyes, and his view towards all things Snape and Malfoy was distorted in the extreme.I really enjoyed your story. Thanks for writing and sharing. On a different note, did you see the movie "Perfume" with Alan Rickman? A very strange and twisted tale. I'm glad I saw it, but it's not one I would want to view over and over again.
Response from JunoMagic (Author of The Scent of Magic)
I'm with you: I'd like to think that Lucius' motivations were not completely based on guild politics and getting the upper hand with Severus. He will always remain an ambiguous character, but he's not truly Evil.I'm happy you enjoyed the story so much, thank you for taking the time to read and review. As for "Perfume", yes, I know it, both the novel and the movie derived from the novel. And yeah, I'm with you on that one, too. Strange and twisted, and actually I think the plot (at least the way it's presented in the movie ... don't remember the book accurately) is not all that good. But Alan is always good, of course! XD
Terrific story. Wish there was more of it to read. It's a habit forming story for me & I am in withdrawel now.
