Eh, I'm too boring to have a proper bio.
Reviews for Filling in the Spaces
Well, I see Vernon is continuing to win friends and influence people! Petunia is embarrassed for him, is Dudley? Seeing the boggart Dementor may remind him of how Harry saved him all over again.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Vernon's just a dear, isn't he? Lol. As for Dudley, at this point, because we're only seeing Petunia's POV and she's cheerfully in denial about her son seeing anything is wrong between his parents, she really doesn't know what's going through Dudley's head. We'll get there soon, though. Well, "soon". Lol.

nice. vernon is a douche.
Author's Response: He really, really is. I wrote him, and I STILL feel compelled to smack him. Lol.
This is really interesting; I'm excited to read the next chapter! You may want to revise your story summary--the syntax is a bit odd and confusing. I really can't imagine Petunia holding up under all this stress with absolutely nothing to do...will she ask for anything from Hestia? I dunno, crosswords? a book? a radio that will pick up the rebel station? I would go mad, not to mention stir-crazy.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
After rereading the summary, I agree. I've poked at it a bit; hopefully it's better now. :)Petunia will eventually get the courage to ask for things for herself, and she'll find ways to amuse herself as well, once she gets bold enough.
Yeah, I know how Petunia feels...when I'm sick and can't do much, I get stir-crazy from lying around in the bed all day. The time passes so slowly, and days seem to take 48 hours instead of 24.I think she's right to hide the wizard robes from Vernon; he wouldn't take it well at all!
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
I agree, I think it would be incredibly, mind-numbingly boring, enough to make you crazy after a few days, let alone months. Yeah, Vernon would probably not take the sight of wizard robes very well, would he? Lol.
gads, life being protected is harsh. I'd go crazy if I couldn't go outside even to do a bit of gradening.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Lol, same here. I can't imagine not being able to so much as open the front door for fear of being discovered and killed. It would have to be absolutely terrifying.
Petunia's reaction to the letter was stronger than I'd have thought. Even Vernon showed signs of caring. Maybe that's hopful.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
I think the war is finally becoming very real for them, for the first time. :D
Ah, it's so short! Why is it so short? I was just getting into it, too! Think of it as a compliment. It's good, so I want more. I'm interested to see if the Dursleys will get connected to the Wizarding Wireless--it would be fun to see thier reactions to the Potterwatch broadcasts!
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
*grins* The chapters are shortish, but I'll be posting at least one a day, so the wait won't be long, I promise. I'm glad you're enjoying it!
Oh, a story centered on Petunia. I like how you have her in this - very canon. Poor Hestia and Dedalus, I knew they wouldn't have been able to stand them for very long.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Thank you!! :D
I like this story wery mush ( and the prequel as well). I like the tone (hope you know what I mean), the slow pace. It is indeed very interesting. Glad to know there will be updates often
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Thank you!! :D I'm glad you're enjoying them!!I've just posted the next chapter--well, chapters, 4 and 5 are in the same update.
Its interesting to read Petunia's POV and think about what the Dursley's experence that last year was like. I'm going to interpret Dudley's going upstairs without a word as a sign that he cares for Harry. Looking forward to the next chapter.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Thank you! And yes, Dudley is worried, but he's a boy of few words. ;) The chapters should be coming at a rate of one or two a day--I have most of it done, but am trying not to get ahead of posting on other archives. Glad you're enjoying it! :D
You know, I always wondered what would have happened to the Dursleys when they went into hiding...This looks like it will be an interesting "what if" for them. And poor Dudley! After being such a prat to Harry for all those years, to finally start to see him as family after being saved from those Dementors. I really felt sorry for him when he was asking his parents why Harry wouldn't be coming with them in the series. I hope that Dudley will get a small chance to shine in his own right in your story!Looking forward to the next chapters...
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
I'm glad you like it!! I too always wondered about the Dursleys. I was so sad that Jo never did anything further with them in DH. And yes, while the story is mainly focused on Petunia, Dudley features in many of the chapters. :)
It's good to see Petunia be strong.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
She is slowly coming into her own. :) *hugs Petunia*
What Vernon is doing is abusive. He withdrew his affections and tries to control who Petunia sees. I hope Petunia gets some help when it's all over. She has been abused so long that she probably need therapy.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
It really is. I think Petunia is trying to justify it to herself at this point as being a product of their situation, but... ugh. I hate Vernon. Lol. I know I probably shouldn't hate him because um, I'm writing him this way, but still. Hate him. lol.
Vernon is going to be very lucky if he escapes this year without somebody turning him into something! I guess the Christmas spirit only carried him so far...but he's only got himself to blame. If he wasn't so persistently freezing Petunia out, she wouldn't be so eager to invite Hestia over to spend time with her. The more he starves her for human interaction and affection, the more she's going to turn to others--and in this case, the "others" are perforce going to be members of the Wizarding community.Still, I continue to applaud Petunia's growth as an individual and hope that she and Hestia have a very nice time together. If Vernon leaves her once this is all over with, maybe Hestia will let Petunia move in with her while she gets back on her feet in the aftermath. Now there's a whole other story...
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Lol, too bad Moody's gone, he could have turned Vernon into a ferret! :D And you're exactly right--he really only has himself to blame for everything Petunia's doing that he doesn't approve of, and he totally doesn't see that. :(
I do like your realism as well. In your story it seems Petunia married Vernon to be as far away as possible from such thing as magic. And as always this only works as long as both of them share their opinion about magic. So I am glad that she's now making other choices, wether he likes it or not.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Thank you! And I think you're right--she does love him, but part of what she loved most about him when they met was that he shared her views on magic. Except now her views have changed, and his... haven't. :( Definitely makes things difficult for their marriage, when the biggest thing they had in common is suddenly gone.
I look forward to this story. I thought about it off and on what was their life like during hiding. I think that you are writing about this in a realistic manner.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
I'm glad you're enjoying it, and that everything comes across in a realistic manner! This story has been two years in the planning (I'm rarely quick about anything, lol), and each detail has been very carefully and lovingly crafted, so it always thrills me when people find it believable. :)
You know, that was probably the most conversation that Dudley and Petunia have had with one another since they were moved to the safehouse! I'm glad that Dudley didn't bat an eyelash at the magical communication between his mum and Hestia, and maybe they can all start playing chess together. I always thought that in the future, Dudley would marry and have a kid who turned out to have magic in him or her as well!
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Aw, I love the image of adult!Dudley with a magical kid. And I think after DH, I'd be confident that he'd handle it very well. Better than his parents managed with raising Harry, at the very least...
I liked it, a nice light-hearted chapter... and so true to real life. My mother in law knows less about computers than I, and my seven year old seems to know more than me! LOL!
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Lol, I know, right? And this being 1998, when the internet and chat rooms and that sort of thing were still a fairly new thing, I can totally see Petunia being like, "Um, what? Typewriter, yay!" Lol. Vernon might be slightly more computer-savvy if they use computers at Grunnings now, I guess, but I can't see Petunia ever coming in contact with a computer on a regular basis besides Dudley's, and she probably regards it as something she'd never be interested in. Lol.
Response from sinbad (Reviewer)
Tell me about it. I never used computers and used a typewriter (even through college) up and until I discovered fan fiction. Now I'm much more computer savvy (even if there is more for me to learn) than I was three or four years ago.
These chapters were absolutely delightful. And, I get the idea that Dudley will soon follow in his mother's footsteps in accepting more fully the friendships he could have in the wizarding world.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Thank you!! I think he will, too--Dudley has always struck me as being very much a product of his raising, and he tends to look to his parents to see how he should react to things. If his mother is suddenly tolerant of magic--or, even better, interacting with magical things without a second thought--he may begin to question his own views on it as well. Coupled with his DH concern for Harry, it really could affect how he sees the magical world and how he reacts to being confronted with it.
Response from sara lady dalian (Reviewer)
I was rather proud of his reaction to Harry's plight in DH. Hopefully this lead to them at least being able to share certain familial relations in the epilogue area. I also hope that he is able to, as you say, question his views on magic. Wonderful story. Sara
What a cool idea for the chess set! I'm so glad that Petunia is becoming closer with Hestia, she needs someone to talk to and doesn't really have anyone in the house anymore. And the game will help keep her from feeling so stir-crazy all the time. I wonder if the Wizarding chess pieces will start to get jealous? Maybe it won't be so bad for them to be played with by Muggles after all...
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Petunia definitely needs a friend, and Hestia does too, really.LOL, poor little Wizarding chess pieces. So neglected. Lol.
These two ladies should wind up as room mates at some point. They are both learning from each other and enjoy each other's company.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
*grins* I can't help it - I'm hearing the theme song from the Odd Couple in my head. :D They'd probably have a great time together, though, and have her Muggle family and Hestia's wizarding friends scratching their heads in confusion. Lol.
I like the way Petunia is thinking. I suspect her attitude will hold her in good stead.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
I agree :) Especially if the alternative is doing like Vernon and shutting down entirely. O.o
You know, I see something coming about from a friendship between these two. I think that these days will bring about a goodly friendship that has the chance of transcending the magic/muggle barrier. As Petunia grows as a person, and your story has her doing just that, she is aware that there is more in this heaven and earth than just what she can see with her own two eyes. She also starts to find that having magic does not make one evil or a freak. I hope she continues to learn and evolve into a person that can admit to herself that Lily was what she was, and that she can be friends with a witch without qualms. This story is very well done, my dear. Celebrations for you - and a few chocolate mini's too. Sara
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Thank you for leaving such a thoughtful review!! :D I think Hestia really is the perfect friend for Petunia--she's the first magical person the Dursleys have encountered that really don't want anything from them and/or terrify them, and she's kind enough to not hold their mistakes against them too much, enabling Petunia to feel comfortable talking to her. I think given the time and opportunity, Petunia can find that magic doesn't necessarily make someone the enemy, just like not having magic doesn't necessarily make someone a friend. *has high hopes for Petunia*
I am still enjoying very mush reading your story. I lover the "mood" and all the little details.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
Thank you!! I'm glad you're enjoying it!
All those batteries! I thought of the Energizer Bunny when I read that--"it just keeps going...and going...and going." That Game Boy will be going for years! Thankfully, they shouldn't have to stay in hiding that long. Also glad to see that Vernon was able to thaw out a little for Christmas; maybe it will become a habit for him. Like the Grinch, his tiny little heart will swell and no one will sing mean songs about him anymore. Well, we can hope.
Response from JackieJLH (Author of Filling in the Spaces)
It will!! And those original grey, brick-like Game Boys lasted FOREVER. They were like tiny little tanks; you couldn't kill them. That thing could last him a decade if need be--and now he has enough batteries for it to keep running that long. :D If there are mean songs about Vernon out there, I demand to hear them! Lol. Someone should write some. *nods*
