Reviews for Dark Santiago
My dear,This was charming. And vibrant - you really do have a gift for the back-and-forth of conversation. The bit on the couch, starting with, "Lupin, then." - I could see them, conversing normally. I expect you work at this - good job.Of course I'm disappointed that the story is over. I'll work through this while I consider what a good job you did on it. It was well-crafted, despite the small scale. And when I think about the trying quality of most fan fiction out there, my disappointment fades completely - you're in a separate, professional-level, serious-inquiries-only category. Thanks so much for sharing your AA-rated talent with the masses! Take care of yourself until the next tale's reviews. Love,Christina
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Dear Christina,Thank you! I'm awfully glad to hear that the dialogue is working. When I was in school, my weakness was dialogue, and I made myself take playwriting classes until I was straightened out, so I'm doubly glad to hear that it felt natural. I should have posted it all at once, or put the number of chapters on it right in the first author's note, so that there wouldn't be this feeling of expectation for a longer fic. But I'm very happy that you liked it, and very flattered by your praise. Thank you so much. I'm so lucky to have you for a reader.LoveMeg
that was absolutely superb! and i even liked the ending. thanks so much for sharing your time, talent and vision
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you, Kimjo! I'm so glad you liked it--the ending especially. It's my sort of ending, but not for everyone. :)
Complete???? you will not continue?
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
I'm sorry that you're disappointed,

. This was a short story written for the ss/hg winter exchange. I know it's unusual not to see epics from me. But I think with this scenario, I've taken it as far as it will go. Thank you for reading!
"I might also mention that I am rather fond of this quilt and would like to have it back some day."The Severus way to say "please come back"? Neither he wants to interfere with her newstart, nor does he want to do all this getting used to waiting for someone, or being connected to someone. But they did have a night, my dear!!She was courageous. "I do what I want to do!" and he wanted the same! HE! “Tell me my fortune,” , hey, cool start. Have to try this next time!! *gg*And she gets his blanket. so sweet.let's see how long it takes, till he returns to his fireplace in good old magic Britain.

What! you ended it !!!!???? I only just realised it while reading the other reviews. you can not be serious!ok. you kept your promise to heal them. but that was only the start of your therapy. hey, doctor, come back!!pleasepleasepleasemoremoremore I want to see you like this: *g*greetings

Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Dear Salvamea,Yes, I definitely think that's Severus-speak for "please come back." I don't think he could bear to let her go without saying something. But I can't imagine how this story could possibly continue, to be honest. I imagine they're going to be apart for quite some time. She's got a career to build, and he has many a fortune to tell before they meet again. But I hope you know in your heart of hearts that they do.Thank you so much for reading, my friend!xoxoLariope
Birds!! how did you know , she would conjour Birds!! What wonderful sign!a victory park. well yes! given the conversation they had. AND the last sentence, it was a victory. To find to herself. and get back her self-esteem.He told her hard things. like no3 on the list.Which seemed to help her, since then it would have not been unneccessary to do to her parents what she had done.I all made sense.A forgotten victory park. For those who want to stay on vacation and have an option, still want to feel like they can chose where to go to from here. This is what she needs. A new start, a new motivation.I think his speech was doing the job.At least she thinks about her NEWTS again, this is a start. Not to mention what was going on between the lines. you do this so brilliantly!! so many thanks for the chapter!the scene in the cabin was almost claustrophobic. but his words and appearance was so normal, that she could bear it very easily. Being in a funpark with Snape! who would have guessed. And yet it feels so right. ha!
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Oh, I'm so happy that you liked the birds. They were some of my favorites to write. And yes, how weird to be in a funpark with Snape! If you'd ever told me I'd write that, I'd have said you were crazy. I'm so glad you're enjoying it. Thank you for reading and reviewing!!
WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!Alright, now that I've got that out of my system...This was a gorgeous tale. I could really see Hermione trying to make amends to her parents by not using magic and unknowingly doing herself damage in the process. And following them around the world to try and reconnect, sacrificing her own education as penance.I love the Severus that you've created here as well. Counsellor, disguised as a mystic. Laughed at the reference to Trelawney and her get-up.The way these two connect here is unique and bittersweet. Normally, I wouldn't beg for an epilogue when a story has been told as well as this one, but I've already built a scene in my head of Severus returning to his flat a year or two from now and finding the yellow quilt back on his bed and Hermione sitting next to it, waiting for him.Thank you for another satisfying read, Lariope!~

Thank you so much, Arynwy! I'm so happy that you liked it! And I know what you mean about the epilogue, but I'm afraid that epilogues and I have a nasty history that I've vowed not to repeat. :) Thank you so much for reading, and for this beautiful review that made my day. xoxoxoLariope
(tries to think like a clever, subtle Slytherin... fails... goes for the direct begging approach...) please, how about writing a vignette from about five years in the future, after she has gone back to him and they've embarked on their new life together, and they revisit the scene? I'm curious if any of his old clients took his advice.thank you for this heartfelt story! you have a way with words that makes me love SSHG miore each time.

Oh,
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
, I'm so glad you liked it. Thank you so much! As far as a sequel goes, I'm not making any promises (like a Slytherin!) I'm waiting to see if the muse strikes! Thank you so much for reading and reviewing!!
SO yummy! Doesn't this just cry for a sequel (proper response: "Yes! Right away!")? Seriously, this was a very enjoyable short story. Thanks so much.
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you so much! It was my first attempt at an sshg short story, so I'm so glad you liked it. Thank you!
I really enjoyed your story. The ending is perfect.
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you so much, Sevra. I'm so glad you liked it, the ending especially! xoxo
I quite like the hope in that ending.
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you so much, Blue Artemis. I'm so glad that it felt hopeful to you. :) xoxo
What? This is the end?!? No. It can't be. I didn't believe it until I went back to the story index and saw it for myself. No, this is---has to be---the beginning; the start of a new beginning for both of them, that you WILL write---won't you?Besides, I can't get enough of the achingly beautiful way you turn a phrase, that always makes me know, when I see a story "by Lariope", that it will be wonderful. Such as:"Before long, she will cross an ocean, held aloft only by the movement of air over the wings of a hulking machine." (I've explained to my sons in school over and over again how the laws of aerodynamics make possible for a several-tons aircraft to be lifted and supported merely by air, but never have caught the wonder of it as you did in only 22 words.)"she sits in his bed, wrapped in the yellow quilt that he will never be able to look at again." (ah, such sad foreshadowing! Already he is saying goodbye in his heart.)"But there is no magic for the things he needs"---(but there must be, there must be---life simply cannot be that cruel, especially when we can make his life whatever we will, now--smile)"Already, when she leaves, he will have to begin the cycle of forgetting again, of unlearning homesickness and loneliness."(yes--and this is why you CANNOT leave it here, it's too heartbreaking---Severus' life has been one long broken, defeated journey of loneliness---he deserves better than to be left that way again, in some neon wilderness...)' “Severus?” she says. “If I were to come back, would you be here?”How can he answer that? To answer her would be to end his life as he knows it and to begin a life of waiting for things that might never come to pass. ' {ah yes, and this is why you WILL answer her question for us, won't you? No 'Lady and the Tiger" here, right? (I always hated that story.) Do please consider a sequel. There's enough sadness and uncertainty in the world--one of the greatest comforts of fanfiction is seeing an injustice properly requited, a brokenness healed, a hope salvaged -- all in the teeth of so-called "real life"--so that I can have hope that all the fairy tales aren't always 'just' fairy tales.Thank you for another lovely glimpse into your world.
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Dearest Countrymouse,Thank you for such a wonderful review. That's enough to carry me safely through the week and more. :)It's funny, much of what I mean ends up on the page whether or not I say it with words--it's something in the tone, and yet here, I must admit that I'm surprised at how the ambivalence of the ending is playing out. I never thought of this as a Lady or the Tiger fic--I guess my little heart is too shippy to do anything but imagine that she returns. Years later, perhaps, but that he is there. I have never written a sequel, and honestly, I can't imagine spinning anything past a reunion--although now that I think of it, one of my exchange prompts was a reunion--I very much wanted to read one. *gears churn* *Lariope promises nothing*LOL.Thank you, my friend, for reading and for this lovely review.xoxoxLariope
Wow, that was hot, steamy AND sweet!!! I loved it and can't wait for more!
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Dear Gabi,I'm glad you liked it. And I'm sorry to report that that was the end. I really saw this story as a chance intersection, though in my heart of hearts, I believe she goes back, and that he is waiting for her. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. Yours,Lariope
It's over already?? It feels like it the story has just begun...I cannot say enough how very real it all feels as I read, and not one word is ever wasted. Wonderful story. Any chance of a sequel?
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
My dear Kallonista, I know, it was odd for me to write a short. I'm so used to thinking in the huge, sweeping scale, but it was nice, too, to imagine this smaller moment between them. I'm so glad you liked it. Thank you so very much!
Oh, that was wonderful! I caught myself holding my breath during certain parts (and flushing).
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you. I'm always very nervous about writing those scenes, so I'm glad to hear that it was flush-worthy. LOL! Thank you so much for reading, and for your beautiful reviews. I appreciate them more than you know. xoxoxo
ooohhh..... That was soooo lovely! She has to go back... or he has to come home. Either way it would be criminal and too heartbreaking to keep them apart....Pretty please???
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Dear Neelix,Thank you. I'm so glad you liked it. :)In my heart of hearts, I believe she goes back to him, maybe a bit more whole than she was the first time. I'm a true shipper to the core. I always think they find each other. :)Thank you so much for reading and reviewing.xoxoLariope
This was a fantastic story. Very well written, original and the prose flowed beautifully. Only one complaint. Sorry! It was too short. I could have had it going on endlessly like some of the other brilliant epics I have read. Still, I suppose you can't spoil us too much all the time. We may turn into demanding Malfoy brats. Absolutely delightful. Thank you. Best wishes, Love Ali xxxxx.
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you, Ali. I've never done a short before, so I know what you mean. I'm hoping to tackle a new epic come summertime. I'm so glad that you liked the story. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. xoxox
Wow! What a great read!! Thank you for the hard work it took to get it here - look forward to more from you soon. Really enjoy your characterization - and your storytelling!
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you so much, Mom7Knox! You're a very thoughtful reviewer, and I appreciate your support! I'm so glad you enjoyed the story. xoxox
wonderful update. thanks so much
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you, Kimjo2! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
heart=wrenched. Sequel? Pretty Please?
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Oh, Sapphire_Phoenix, I'm so sorry that I wrenched your heart. I didn't mean to, I swear it. In my heart of hearts, I think I must be too hopeful a person to imagine anything but the best for them. I'm not making promises about a sequel. I've never written one before. But never say never, I suppose!!Thank you so much for reading and reviewing. xoxox Lariope
I enjoyed this so much that I had to read it twice.Exquisitly delicious, as always.Somehow, I don't see her coming back to sit beside him and give fortunes. But I don't see him satisfied giving fortunes for the rest of his days either. It will be very interesting to see what you have in store for our favorite couple.I read in a couple of the other reviews that this is not of the usual epic length, and that you have already completed it. In some ways that makes me happy, to know that I don't have too long to wait to find out what happens. But in another way it makes me sad, because it is the journey that I enjoy most with any well written story, and this most definitly falls into that catagory. To reach the end, to know there is no more, brings me a sense of loss.Great job, as always, Lariope. I look anxiously forward to your next installment.
Response from ClayPotter (Reviewer)
I am adding to this now that I have read your reply to my previous post. So this is the end? I assume that she will someday return his blanket in person. And then perhaps they will leave that place together to enjoy points unknown.I look forward to your next longer story.
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Dear
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
,I'm so sorry that I disappointed you with the length. This was an exchange story, and my first attempt at a short. I'm heartened that you felt as I did as I wrote it, that she cannot take over (for lack of better words) his particular coping method--she cannot go back and tell fortunes. But I see the story as a chance meeting that sparked something--not just between them, but for them both--a jumping off place for entering the post-war world. I don't think he'll stay there forever. I do think he'll stay long enough to receive that blanket back in person. So I feel hopeful that you read it as I intended, and I will try to stick to longer things in the future. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing.xxooxLariope
Response from ClayPotter (Reviewer)
Dear Lariope,I don't want you to think that the length of the story was a disappointment, just a surprise. It didn't "feel" like the end, but, as you sated above, a beginning. The fact that you want the reader's imagination to finish it was simply something that caught me off guard. The story was beautifully written, and I enjoyed every word of it. Your character development was brilliant, even with this short length. I have no complaints.Take care and happy writing,
oh damn.why do i have the feeling that he's just letting her down easy?this is staggeringly good read and i wouldn't have you spell the ending out for us, happy or not, but... damn.
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
I don't want to tell you what I think because I think whatever you believe is what is true. But I do know what I think in case you want to know. LOL! How was that for cryptic!!Thank you very much for reading and reviewing. I'm very glad you enjoyed it. xoxox
what an end... *sniff* I just saw , You posted your last chapter and stopped working to read... well I have to go on now. hope to read something new soon, as I'm addicted to your stories Thank you
Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
Thank you, Oneira, and thank you for reading. I hope to have a new story for you soon. xoxox
Lariope, you are an absolute gift to the readers of HG/SS. Thank you once again for a truly beautiful story.

Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
. That made my day. ooxox
Oh my, oh my, oh my. I feel that perhaps I should wait a month or two so many chapters can build up and I don't have to put up with this painful lesson in patience that I must endure until you post again. But I know myself better than that. When the next chapter appears, I will not be able to resists. Please hurry!

Response from Lariope (Author of Dark Santiago)
,You won't be waiting months, believe me--this is a short, and I'll post the last chapter sometime today. I hope to begin another long story after school ends (I'm a schoolteacher). But I do hope you will enjoy it, even though it's small. Thank you so much for reading and for your lovely reviews. xoxoxoLariope
