Snape is once again bound, and as he struggles to accept yet another yoke, he meets a fellow wizard, who suffers a similar undeniable and unbreakable tether. This was inspired by the 'Anything Goes Challenge' and is based upon the prompt that Snape is encouraged to take a vacation. The slash is not explicit, but is slightly more than just implied.

You write of how well I write, but in all truthfulness you are a much better author than I. This was beautifully written. I can't wait to see what happens next. Brilliant, sweetflag, as always. ~soft hugsTamara

Thank you for the review :D Pffft! Better is so subjective and very much in the eye of the beholder (reader). I admire your style and writing... so there!*hugs*

This is quite an intriguing start and I am looking forward to the development of their relationship. Something tells me that they might be of help to each other...

Assistant? I had to laugh cuz I knew Snape would not take kindly to this from Neville. But after all was said and done, he had come to realize that Neville had done him a good turn, and that his former student was battling a demon of his own.I hope Neville will be able to bring himself to talk to the Potions master and perhaps a working relationship can be established. Then, who knows, perhaps a friendship can form where animosity once ruled.I look forward to your next update!Beth

Thank you for the review :)I was having a giggle while writing that scene as well. I could imagine Neville exacting a wee bit of revenge while he was helping Snape out.I hope that you don't mind, but the next update will most likely be after Christmas. I'll see if I can do a double-shuffle in this last week before the end of term. The Season's best to you and yours. Thanks for the review.
So Severus snape has found a puzzle, oh how he loves a puzzle. Neville's rescue was priceless. wonderful Chapter!
I am usually a SS/HG girl, but this caught my eye and after reading the first chapter I must say that I find the pair very interesting, and I can not wait to read the rest of your fic. Great job!
Thank you for a wonderful story. I am looking forward to its continuation.

Many thanks :) Got more chapters....just waiting on some help. Glad you enjoyed it :D
I fell asleep over this story and I read on even before breakfast. Your portrayal of Neville and Severus is wonderful and thoroughly beliefable, but I am terrified of how the plot continues. There seems to be no room for happy endings.

Hello :) I read the first few words and thought: 'oh crikey! The story is boring :O' Phew! Lol. Thank you for the lovely review. Yeah, it does get a bit gloomy and dark, but I do hurt/comfort, so for as dark as it gets, there will be light. Thanks again :)
I love Maud! I was so happy when Peters began to sort things out, that memories were reconnecting somewhat and his mind was trying to awaken him. The vas connectons and numerous denderites in the brain are so interlaced and interdependant, so complex, that there would have to be residuals. It's not only neurons - they are only part of the web, within the web in a greater web and connected together. I really enjoyed Minerva's talk with Maud, but really, aren't they ready to actually divulge anything. and what are Dark memories? I wanna know that. Loving this story, recommended it to two friends. Hugs

Thank you. I have used that idea of 'memory echoes' to help in Cross' endeavour to convince people of their guilt. For instance, imagine walking in and catching only a snippet of what was said... then someone comes along and fills in the blanks, so innocent comments become insidious, and so on. And your own instincts and half-recalled memories support it. lol... I have these moments where I think I've done something and the concept is so strong that I just cannot accept otherwise, and it stems from an old memory 'echoing' with something recent. Bah! Cross is a nasty man. Isn't it annoying when people don't tell you everything?! lol...there's a reason for that, and Maud will tell you all about it. Yes, Black Memories... I sometimes scare myself with what I can think up. Aww... thank you for recommending this story. That means a lot.
Response from beaweasley2 (Reviewer)
But do tell us at some point exactly what are 'black memories' please. I re-read the bit in the chapter... it's not just bad memories, we all have those. Are black memories truly evil ones?
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
You'll have to wait for the next chat with Maud :D I'm not looking forward to it, but it should be chilling.

Oh gods, I'm actually gasping for air with him. The imagery of the record and his mother's life, fitting in so succinctly, I want to rush in and help him. I enjoyed the tea between Minerva and Poppy. You write them both so wellWhat's keeping Neville form asking about the vial? Don't tell me, I want to be susprised.
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Thank you. I re-read the chapter and actually sniffled. I do enjoy writing Minerva and Pomona; I picture my Grandmother and her friends :) Glad you're enjoying it.

Oh my gods the Healers and Ministry people in this chapter are monsters - simply MONSTERS!! They are hardly better than the Death Eaters were - or Bellatrix had been. I thought the only decent one was Peters - and then Croft vanquished the memories - I agreed with Peters. Croft needs to be subjected to his owmn tortures!! Good story.. loveing it so far and have gotten a bit carried away reading it. It's too late, have to go to bed now, but i'll be back reading tomorrow.
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Thank you for staying up to review :) much appreciated. lol... I have something in mind for Croft... have no fear!

And for 'Healer' Burke? And for Auror Cross?Did Harry add memoried to the Pensieve? Or Ginny?
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
lol... I meant Cross. *blushes* I honestly do know what's going on! They will all meet with a satisfying end. As for the memories... that will become clearer later. Thank you so much for the review.

Intriguing. First of all THANK YOU for the super fast update -- and also for the glimpse of Severus' and Neville's growing bond. " In what had been an age of loneliness, hope was stirring and raging valiantly against self-preservation." sums up Snape's life well at this point. I enjoyed the way you depicted the change in Snape as he begun to realise that he might not be quite as alone and without hope as he had thought -- as much as his growing (but not articulated) awareness of Neville. I also loved the section in the Ministry. Can't wait to see what happens next! Pxx

They feel comforted with being close to each other, and that fact brings them out of their comfort zone. Lonely, hurt wolves, the both of them, and you depict them so well! Thanks for another great chapter!Of course, Minerva and Pomona will be pleased to discuss the friendship between the men, but can those two please refrain from interferring?! I still hope that the disgusting Ministry practices come to the open soon.

Hello
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
, Thank you so much. Are you asking me to make the ladies well-behaved? lol. They're old biddies... it's in the genes. However, I shall keep their meddling to a minimum. And thanks for still reading; I'm very happy.
As a gardener I was all kinds of happy with this chapter! So much to love from the Founder's garden to the planting of the honeysuckle. I very much enjoyed the Severus & Minerva banter. Its good to know he has an ally. How often are you updating this?
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
I'm thrilled that you enjoyed the gardening section; I was influenced by a lady, who is a gardener and who has offered great advice to me in recent months. My updating has been a bit sporadic lately due to inevitable 'real life', but things have calmed down, so I hope to update roughly every two weeks. That sounds rather long... but I doubt I could write 4,000 words any quicker--not without chemical enhancement at any rate :D lol
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Finally managed an update! Sorry about the wait. Hope you enjoy... there's more flowery bits :D Oh! What's your favourite plant/herb/flower?
Response from MollysSister (Reviewer)
Yippeeee for an update! My current plant obsession is with Hostas. I have been collecting mini hostas (no taller than 12 inches) for the last few years. I cannot seem to help myself, they are so damn cute!!
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
okay... never heard of them, but they'll have a cameo role :D I have visions of you being surrounded by mini hostas, fighting your way through to get to the computer. The next chapter focuses on Snape; you mentioned in another review about letting you know what happens: this is it. It's quite dark, so... kind of not as flowery as the previous chapter. I thought that I'd prepare you. Thanks for the support :)
Response from MollysSister (Reviewer)
Ouuuuu I wish it was spring or even summer and I could take a picture of the hostas for you!!! Here is what the plants look like if that helps the musehttp://www.pineforestgardens.com/catalog/mini_dwarf.php
Rhine, a Dormstrang? That gives me the creeps. Even if she's a bit much at times, I think Pomona will be of great help to have Neville settle in. I'm still a bit confused as to what exactly Neville has gone through in the last ten years. Minerva knows Severus a good deal better than he is comfortable with, but he seems to be grumpy to her more because he's always been difficult and not really out of annoyance. He values her a lot. I wonder what roles you have in mind for these two women. You've woven quite an intriguing web of relations. Can't wait to see where you lead them!
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Thank you for reading and reviewing :)It's really nice to get the reader's thoughts and ideas regarding the story, so thank you for sharing.I hope that I lead them somewhere nice :)

Wonderful new chapter! I love the backstory of teaching and the school you show us, and Neville's start as a teacher looks and feels truly realistic.
Author's Response: Thank you for the review and compliment :)
I'm drawing on my own experiences of teacher training, so I'm cunningly using it as a bit of revision :D
Stealth isn’t a requirement of a Herbology enthusiast, Too funny Neville! I am glad that they are easing ever so gently into banter. I like the slow slide into friendship. Are you ever going to tell us what Snape's ministry restrictions are? I suspect I will be outraged on Snape's behalf.
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Thank you for the review.Snape has a chapter pretty much to himself soon, which will explain a lot as he deals with his appointment at the Ministry.
Oh I dont like how upset Snape gets about the ministry potion. It makes me think bad things are being done to him. I can certainly understand why Severus is not happy with his current lot in life.
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Thanks for the review. Can't say much about the Ministry potion as of yet, but those who have some power over another tend to abuse it.
Now what are you up to with this Rhine character... I can't wait to see :-)
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
What makes you think that I'm up to anything? *attempts looking innocent*I have a plan :D I'm thrilled that you're enjoyng this. Thanks for reading and reviewing.
What were the Aurors going to do before Neville stepped up? have they been harassing him???
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
You get an idea of what the Aurors (very few of them, though; they're not all twerps) are up to as time goes on. Snape is due at the Ministry soon, so more will come out during that scene. Thanks for reading and reviewing :)
I cant say as I have ever read this pairing before. You have sucked me in! They are both hurting so much. Tugs at my little romantic fan girl heart.
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
The pairing is quite unusual, and I guess even more so considering the main focus of this site, but I really appreciate this site, so here it is! lol Thank you for deciding to read this tale. :)I'm glad that you're enjoying it. I'm having a rather fun time writing it.Thank you for the review :)
Okay, you've got me hook, line, and sinker all, cakes. You've given me valid reasons for everything - the number one thing I look for when I'm reading. ^_^ Yeah for plausibility!
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Thank you so much :) Hmm... I like that element of plausibility too; just because this is fanfiction based on fiction doesn't mean that it has to fall into the realms of utter fairytale nonsense :D lol.It reminds me of something my husband once said when watching a programme with our youngest; he said how misleading for chlidren it could be to watch programmes where animals wear clothing... and I countered with the notion that talking animals were somehow less bothersome.
What a delicate way how they build a relationship.
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Thank you again. :)
brr, is Neville obsessed?A great story! Both guys have developed, but then again they're still so much the same they ever were. You added these personalities to a promissing plot.
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Neville obsessed... hmm... a wee bit, yes.Thank you for the review and the encouragement.
I'm anxious for them to start work on the potion. You're too clever!
Response from sweetflag (Author of A Fine Divide)
Only a few weeks to go! lol...I'm really enjoying the propsect of writing about Neville's experiences of teacher training :D Not to mention working closely with Snape; and I wonder how he'll cope with Pomona :D
