Two years after the defeat of Voldemort, Hermione is enjoying a successful, if humdrum, career as Director of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. One day, she receives a strange invitation. The mysterious sender of the invitation wants her to investigate the disappearance of Severus Snape. She accepts the challenge. This is the resultant tale.

Interesting.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
I do hope you will continue the story as it unfolds. Thank you for leaving a review.
Excellent beginning. I very much like the tone and Hermione's feelings towards the Ministry. :)
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
With a Ministry as bureaucratised as that, anyone would share Hermione's feelings. Thank you, Madame Patron, for your kindness. I am in your debt
Intriguing beginning. I like how you are layering your plot. There seems to be at least two different forces at work just now. Draco and our mystery guest. Now the question is are they after the same thing from Hermione or are they working together to get to her? She obviously thinks she is finished with Draco, however, I get the sense that he will not let it just drop, whatever his real motive. (BTW I like how you slipped in the jealous Pansy factor, I hope we get to see some interaction with her) I look forward to the rest of your story. Thanks, JoAnne
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
What if I told you Draco and the 'mystery guest' are somewhat linked? He has a reason for writing, and I slipped in the Pansy factor for a reason, but that reason will not be obvious. My only advice in reading this fic - don't get your hopes up.
Absolutely wonderful, intriguing start! It reads... sophisticated, and I love this. Looking forward to reading more chapters.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Thank you for thinking the premise intriguing and sophisticated. I just wanted Hermione to ramble while being just a tad annoyed with the bureaucratic machinery of the Ministry. I certainly hope you will continue to follow the story as it unravels.
I like the story so far,I do hope the secert person could be Severus, but if not anyones better than Ron!
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Lots of people are much better than Ron, you and me for instance. We are much better than Ron. Thank you for the encouragement. I hope you will continue to follow and enjoy the story as it unfolds.
I love this, and can't wait for more! Excellent job!
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Thank you for your kind words.
Wow, this is a new twist and I enjoyed the use of first person in this. Forgive me for saying, the long paragraphs were a bit hard to read, but the way you carried the story as if in dialogue literally pulled me through the story! I could really feel her emotions in your writing. I look forward to your next chapter. Good work!
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
The first person voice is not used frequently, so I threw it in. I write as I think, so you must forgive me if the long paragraphs were tedious to read. Thank you so much for your words of encouragement.
Response from beaweasley2 (Reviewer)
It’s beautifully written. No, first person isn’t frequently used, but you’ve put us in Hermione’s head and literally into her shoes. It’s nicely done. I hope I didn’t offend you. The long paragraphs made me have to slow down to read and in doing so, I savored every thought. I do look forward to your next chapter.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Oh no, I was not and am not offended. I just write as the story unfolds in my head. Thank you for reading. I hope you will continue to enjoy the story as it unfolds. Thank you once again for taking an interest in this story.
I'm glad Hermione is looking at Ron's character, instead of excusing his deficiencies. Can't wait to see who her dinner companion is! Thanks for posting, and I'll be hoping for an update soon.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
I am glad too! Ron is a bit of a swine, and he should be painted as one. I am very pleased you like the beginning of the story, and hope you will continue you to enjoy it as the plot unravels. To learn the identity of the dinner companion, look at the prompts. Thank you for your encouragement.
An intriguing start! I'm fascinated with the almost film-noir-type voice you've given Hermione here, and I look forward to seeing how this unfolds.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Note to self - Do not watch 'The Maltese Falcon' whilst writing fanfiction :p Hermione's voice is the one we will hear throughout the narrative. Thank you for your encouragement.
fascinating start , especially descriptions of the ministry.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
The descriptions of the ministry will continue to dot the plot. Thank you for your words of encouragement.
I know this seems nitpicky, but it's so hard to read with those extremely LONG paragraphs. Perhaps you could break it up a bit? I like where it's going, it just hurts my eyes.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
One paragraph, one idea, that's how I write - as I would an academic piece. So long as the idea fits in the paragraph it goes into that said paragraph, and then flows into the next.
Great Start - I can't wait to read more :)

Excellent writing, wonderful plot! I really can't wait to read more!

Thank you for your high praise. More will come by and by.
great story

I am very glad you enjoyed it.
Wow...that is fantastic. I applaud your story and especially Severus staying away from his former life. It definitely makes the most sense. Amazing.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Thank you for the high praise.
That was most excellent!
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Thank you.
Too bad Hermione ends up a bureaucrat. I always thought she was worth more than that. I like knowing that Severus was content.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Plato wrote in the Phaedrus that there are 2 major parts with the soul constantly warring with each other: (1) the self-indulgent side, and (2) the responsible side who bowed to one's obligations. That is putting things over-simply but that is the basic premise. For most peope, side 1 dominates more. But for Hermione, side 2 dominates. She is obliged to support her parents, to live and do that which is expected of her. That is the side of her that I get most in reading the books. So, that is why she is a bureaucrat.
excellent story even tho it didn't have my favorite kind of ending (i.e. they end up together) altho they did in a way. thank you so much.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Ending up together is too convenient, and I wanted to demonstrate the side of Hermione that I saw in the books - that is, she isn't able to let go of her responsibilities in life whereas Severus is.This is based on my reading on the Phaedrus where Plato posits (and I put this over-simply) there are two major parts of the soul: (a) the self indulgent side that only does what you want to do, and (b) the responsible side that does what is expected of you. Hermione is type (b). Philosophers eschew being (a) and (b) by letting go of the self-indulgent self-serving part of themselves and letting go of wordly obligations. Severus is the philosopher. Hence my ending for this story. Thank you for reading and reviewing.
I like the ending. No happily together ever after, but it's realistic. And I like that order you've created. Well done.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
I was in a very cynical mood when I wrote this, which may explain why I avoided any romance to begin with. Thank you for taking the time to read and review.

This was a very good story. I enjoyed its depth and introspection. The only criticism is that the extremely long paragraphs make it difficult to read. Overall, good job!
Author's Response: One paragraph, one idea, that's how I write - as I would an academic piece. So long as the idea fits in the paragraph it goes into that said paragraph, and then flows into the next. It is very common in the academic and literary tradition I come from that paragraphs often go up to a page and a half. Indeed, my paragraphing is considered short and unorthodox within my academic and literary tradition.
Very good. I was intrigued right the way through. I loved the foreshadowing, and the neat way that all the threads were tied off at the end.
I'm also pleased that Hermione binned Ron at the end.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Thank you for reading and reviewing.
but Hermione seems miserable! I would hope she could visit Severus at least once a year, just for her sanity. Of course, the romantic in me would have S&H both living together somewhere near the monastery under assumed names, and she would see to it that he is no longer so thin and worn, plus she would no longer be in the glaring darkness of modern acquisitive Wizarding and Muggle societies. Sigh.... I will have to be content that he writes her once a month and seems happy with his studies. Thank you for sharing this story!
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Hermione would have to remain in society because she is bound by obligations - to her parents and whatnot. At least she has parted company with Ron-of-little-to-no-EQ Quidditch Hooligan. She will make do, and survive - she's that sort.Severus would still be in the monastery, but he writes to her on his own accord. That indicates he still is interested in what goes on in the outside world. Hermione would learn to be content with that. The point is - One has learnt to let go (SS) of the material things in life, the other hasn't and allows herself to be bound by obligations (HG). That's why they cannot be together romantically. At least not in this story. It would not have made sense to the pre-Socratic in me.But in time, who knows? Thank you for reading and reviewing.
I highly enjoyed reading this....will add to faves once the reveal happens. :)Maria
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Ah, the reveal. In some underground circles, there is much speculation as to who wrote what... *cackle-wheeze-cough* I am very glad you liked this bus journey-dashed off fic. A part of me wonders whether I should have made this fic longer. But writing on a moving vehicle is crazy enough, and I think everyone must be thinking the sickly looking passenger scribbling on foolscap paper must be quite mad. Lol.Thank you for taking the time to read and review this fic, it is deeply appreciated.
I adore the way Hermione has to use all her brains to figure out the puzzle. As for the missing manservant, I wonder if he went all the way to Cyprus to fetch the cheese, or if he went to Aberforth Dumbledore (since Aberforth has goats); he might even be a disguised monastery member. Thanks for updating!
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
There is a disguised monastry member somewhere (I must have been very transparent for you to see that - forgive me) but it is not Aberforth, though I do wish I had written it that way. But we shall see. Remember, I don't just mention things in the plot just for mention's sake. They are Chekov's guns.Well, Chapter 5 is up and running and concludes the tale... Speaking of halloumi, I must remember to try out this recipe for Christmas involving this cheese and mint....
Very satisfying. I loved the refreshing plot. :-) And thank you for not making me wait longer, lol.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
It would have been impolitic and cruel of me to keep a lovely reader waiting, especially since the chapter had been just sitting on my hard-drive. Thank you for thinking well of the plot, and for following this story.
