Two years after the defeat of Voldemort, Hermione is enjoying a successful, if humdrum, career as Director of the Department for the Regulation and Control of Magical Creatures. One day, she receives a strange invitation. The mysterious sender of the invitation wants her to investigate the disappearance of Severus Snape. She accepts the challenge. This is the resultant tale.

Reviews for For the Benefit of the Unforgiven
I love all the thought and research you've put into this - the "infinity" sign, the post-war condition of Knockturn Alley, and now Dumbledore's escape plan for Severus. Let's hope it worked; that second button could have become detached somehow. Thanks for the new chapter!
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Well, my dear, look no further. The story has been updated through to Ch 5 and is now complete. Ta da! As for whether it worked out? Read on...
Lovely! I truly enjoyed reading this story. The depth you've gone to in order to explain Severus Snape's new life is commendable. I've been pleased to read about the monastic order you have mentioned.
Excellent tale!

I do try - even for a hastily dashed off fic. The story just had to be written, and so it was. Thank you for following this modest tale.
Ooo, better and better. As much as part of me is impatient, I really am enjoying the pacing of this story. I like the build-up very much.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
I am very happy you like it. Well... the plot will continue to unfold.
Excellent! I'm looking forward to the next chapter and am almost sad to see it end soon.

You want the final denouement already? Patience, ma chere, patience. Sometime next week perhaps...
ladyinthecloak's response:Patience? LOL, that's not part of my vocabulary :-))
You mean I have to wait for more than a day?
*whines petulantly*
Excellent chapter! Such intriguing plot, I really like it.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
So do I. For a plot written in snatches whenever time may be found, it turned out fairly decent.
A little convenient that Father Damian aka; Brother Cosmas would simply tell her such information without checking if Brother Macarius aka; Severus Snape would approve or not… considering that he supposedly ‘reinvented himself’ as someone ‘new’ to hide. Still, I suppose Hermione is a book worm and loves research of any kind – and I can understand her need to follow this up – since you’ve made the Ministry such a bleak place to work… Nevertheless, it's an intriguing story.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Careful reading of this chapter will reveal that in this religious order, the decision on such things rests not with the person concerned (i.e. SS/Macarius) but with the Head of the order (Father Damian) and the disciple's Elder (Brother Benedict).
Hermione is good at solving the mysteries, isn't she? I love that.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
I didn't have it in my mind that Hermione's good at solving mysteries. She was more logical and analytical in to me; and give these two traits, it follows that she is adept at putting the pieces together and finding things out.
Fascinating story. I'm enjoying watching it unfold.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
The story unfolded as it came to me. Though for a while, I too was wondering whether anything will come of it. Thank you for your kind words.
interesting turn of phrasing and use of language. thanks and i look forward to further updates.

It may surprise you that I write as I speak. I try to keep things as they appear to me, so hence this plot. Thank you for taking the time to read and review this story.
Ooo, either Borgan knows something, or there is a very big coincidence surrounding Hermione. This is a compelling and obviously well-researched story. While part of me is begging for them to meet again, the majority is enjoying the unfolding of the puzzle. It's easy for us as writers to say, "Hermione researched ___" but it's so much mor rewarding to discover the details with her; great job!
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
As another reviewer commented, the first person voice seems to give the story a film noir tinge to it. But I like being in Hermione's mind - she keeps going on and on, so it she tells me what she wants done. Thank you for the review
An excellent end to a great story, my friend. :) As always
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
You are most kind, esteemed patroness. I should be thanking you for all your kindness. And I am thankful for your support and friendship. :)
And the puzzle grows
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Of course it does... I always let it grow a tiny bit before the final startling revelation. lol. Not always... But I had to cut it off before the chapter ran too long.
Ron's such a prat. :)
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Considering that he has ask Hermione and Harry to bail him out after Quidditch hooliganism - yes. :)
good twist
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
I'm full of twists and turns - like curly pasta - whatever they're called. :)
Hmmm, I really was convinced that Malfoy was up to something more...Lovely story, thank you.

Things happen, and sometimes nothing happens like in a Samuel Beckett play.

Central Fireplace Administrative Switchboard? I love that. Has a nice beaurocratic ring to it that seems very appropriate to the MoM!I am still wondering what the Malfoys are up to...
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
The bureaucracy is based on my experiences with it. The Malfoys? Well, they really have nothing going on.

Altogether now: Ron is a big git!I am glad Hermione figured out the casket.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Men like Ron do exist; and football hooliganism does exist too and are often committed by men in their 30s and 40s. The casket and its mysteries of course have more to reveal.

This chapter made me thing that what Luscius has told Hermione is not all above board. I think he has some other motives to find Severus.
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Unfortunately, Lucius is quite sincere. His cara sposa is another matter altogether. But have no fear, everything will be satisfactorily resolved.

Intriguing beginnig. I like Hermione's attitude to the MoM. And what is Draco up to?
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Draco? Well.... He's a Malfoy - Malfoys generally are up to something. Read on.
From the sounds of it, Ron needs a swift kick in the arse. Maybe two . . . This has totally drawn me in! Superb writting! Are you really Hermoine? Have the HP characters come to life and are writing fan fic? It's perfectly in character!! I can see her sitting and thinking things over, slipping into Knockturn Alley trying to not be noticed, puzzling over the casket . . .
Response from Lady Strange (Author of For the Benefit of the Unforgiven)
Thank you for the high praise. Alas, I am not Hermione, only "She-who-must-not-be-named-until-the-big-reveal". I did worry whether I carried the first person narrative successfully, but I see from your reaction that you are enjoying yourself. My fears are now quite relieved on that score. Thank you once again for your compliments.
