I have loved the written word since watching my mother’s fingers trace the lines of a book, luxuriating in riveting tales and well-turned phrases. Many a night I read until dawn, a plastic flashlight hidden under the covers to light the pages as I raced the rising sun to finish my latest must-read.
Since joining the HP fandom, I've been privileged to receive more than 50 awards, including Best Author (Quill to Parchment Awards) and Best Classic Author (Most Potente Passions). Among others, my stories have won awards for Best Hurt/Comfort (Spoils of War, Morning Has Broken), Best Novel Length (Calling Card, Guard…Check…Mate), Best One Shot (A Beach in Ireland), Best WIP (Saving a Death Eater, The Summoning), Favorite Overall Story (Complexities), and Readers’ Choice (A Quest of Paladins).
Aside from a judicious polish for formatting and egregious typos, I don't plan on revising my early work. Those stories are the stepping stones of my writing journey. Please note some stories contain adult content. None is more graphic than equivalent scenes in the television shows True Blood or Game of Thrones, and age appropriate warnings are posted.
I no longer write fanfiction prolifically. Like many fanfic authors, my focus has shifted to original work. A member of the Romance Writers of America and the Southern California Writers Association, I write under my name: Lin Thornhill.
My original story Verisimilitude published in Thoroughly Modern Monsters (Story Spring Publishing, 2013) reached the top 100 fantasy anthologies and broke into the top 10 in the UK the first month of release. Ben and Christine’s story will continue in 2016.
Fixation, my latest short story, slated for publication in J. Aldis’ anthology Immanence, with a winter 2015-2016 release, is particularly exciting as it anchors the Messengers of Inari novel series I’ve been developing for the past year.

I keep coming back to this story. I think that this is the most gripping chapter I have ever read in any SS/HG story. It plays in my mind when I am day dreaming. The world as he knows it has just shifted, O so clever Albus Dumbledore has no idea, and he was the catalyst. Destiny has ripped them away from his clutches. I can't wait for him to realize he has lost these two. I want him to choke on it! I also can't think of a more dynamic scenario that could do more to bind these two together than this mutual epiphany of their ultimate betrayal by their "protector", bloody Albus Dumbledore "Defender of the Light".
wonderful.Curse Dumbledore, though!

I know. Isn't Dumbledore awful. If I were to ever rework this story, I'd write the scene between Hermione and Dumbledore, so that Severus could hear it.Thank you.
This is definately one of the sweetest stories that I have ever read! I'm in tears even as I write this. I'm so mad at Dumbledore right now! grrr I love that everything worked out all right in the end though. I LOVE this pairing! GREAT STORY!!!!!!

Awww. ::offers you a tissue:: I'm so pleased you found the story moving; that you were irritated with Dumbledore really makes my day. Thank you so much for leaving me such a beautiful review.
So happy to get some lemons in this one. :) Happy that they found happiness in each other. This whole story was very moving. Enough that the reader barely notices POV shifts because they are so caught up in the emotions imbued in every word. Elura

Thank you so much for your comments; they've brought a smile to my face and given me much to think about. I'm very happy you enjoyed the story.
I am exceptionally pleased that Arthur had the presence of mind and cared enough to stop the inflamare. Also glad to hear that Hermione got her chance to scream at the bastard, as did Harry. Extremely suitable. Very glad Severus lived through the incident, and managed to get healing soon enough to save his vision, let alone the rest of his functioning. And that he did not get overtly ticked that Hermione was at his side, and that she'd gone to such extremes to assure he was cared for just as he had her.Elura

I was particularly struck by Arthur Weasley's behavior the night of the Quidditch World Cup; he was commanding and competent and protective of those in his care. I wanted to use his intelligence and native wit in this story, and this scene seemed the perfect opportunity. It's nice to think Hermione and Severus, both, would go to extremes for one another.Thank you.
I nearly cried. Poor Severus.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
Yes, indeed. Poor Severus. I'm afraid he has suffered a great deal in his life, and while some of it was justifiably self-inflicted, much of it was not. As this was not.Thank you for leaving a comment in spite of the gruesomeness of the scene.
Another well-written chapter. I love reading the slowly developing relationship between SS & HG, the growth of the boys into men, and the raising esteemations of all involved.

Thank you. This chapter is perhaps the weakest of all, but I wanted to balance the gruesome with the sublime (or rather the sublime from Severus' and Hermione's perspective.) They have been beleagured and are weary (and Hermione is recovering from both serious and malicious wounds,) so I wanted an idyllic moment -- and one they both recognized as such.I'm very pleased you think this chapter works, and it's been nice to think about this story again, after all this time.
How nice of you to have given Harry and Ron some semblence of intelligence without Hermione at their side to instruct them. LOL. Love how easily you thwarted Dumbly-dore, too. I don't know if I could have done it. I'd have wanted to punch the twinkly-eyed bastard in the face as soon as he even hinted that Hermione could possibly be dead. Another well-done chapter.Elura

Thank you.I wrote this story pre-HBP, and I based the maturation of the trio from a series of interviews from a project I worked on in my real life. I had to interview a number of veterans, most of whom had been in war as young as the age of sixteen, and their stories were enlightening. I realize it's critical, however, I think one of the weaknesses of JKR's trio is the desperate clinging to the illusion that these three are 'normal teenagers', when the reality would be quite different. As a result, my versions of Harry, Ron, and Hermione are quite a bit different than what you would find in canon, and are based on extrapolated clues from canon as to what they could be.I think Harry and Ron have grown used to keeping their own counsel (and without Hermione they might be even more suspicious of everyone and anyone.) And voila!Thank you again.
I have not liked Dumbledore much since Book 5, and by the time I finished Book 7, I despised the manipulative bastard. I like that you portrayed his two-sided BS in this story, and that you crafted a very believable way to bring the two of them together. Snape's confession to Hermione is enough to tear your heart out, and Hermione having to realize just how much Dumbledore has manipulated all of them, even to the point of leaving her so atrociously scarred when they had the ability to heal her much more than that... You have done a fantastic job on this story.Elura

I'm the mother of two sons (both now teenagers), but neither were when we first discovered these books; so I'll confess that I didn't much like Dumbledore after the second book, and my estimation steadily plummeted into outright loathing. I think he would have been perfectly content to allow any of them to die if only to correct and cover up his own mistakes.Having said that, I'm quite moved that you were touched by the mirror scene and Snape's confession. Thank you so much for breaking with your habit to leave me a comment for each chapter.
Normally, I do not comment on a story until I have read all of the chapters, and then I do only an all-over review for the whole thing at once. However, this story is too touching, too phenomenal, too emotional to give only one review. There is so much raw emotion poured into just this first chapter... if you do not write secular fiction, you should consider doing so. The talent is definitely there. I look forward to subsequent chapters.Elura

Although it might sound trite, I'm very pleased you're enjoying the story. I wanted to write this piece for months before I gave in (I was working on two other stories concurrently, and it was a little tough to juggle them all), and any praise it receives makes me terribly pleased.Thank you for the compliment. I am, indeed, attempting to make that leap, and I do appreciate the encouragement.
Wow - what a beautiful told story - thanks for all of your hard work - this was outstanding!

I'm very pleased you liked it. Thank you so much.
oh my gosh ----
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
Yeah. Sorry, but I don't think we see enough of Voldemort's true evil, although I'm not sure it's any more evil than Dumbledore's remoteness. He played them all.Thanks.
nicely done - again your development of their relationship in the cottage this time is beautifully done - thanks
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
I wanted to show them in a situation where it was only them ... set apart from the rest of the world. He's utterly world-weary and she's been betrayed by her adopted world, so I thought it would give them parity, and him a chance to save someone. Thank you very much for your kind words.
Bambu, This is my err I think 3rd reading of this tale and I am remiss at not having reviewed before. In telling you I have read this story at least three times I hope you realize that it is well appreciated. It has joined the ranks of books and stories that I visit like old friends. When ever I need a lift or need to escape from RL I find and book or story that I have enjoyed and this brings comfort to a troubled soul. You have a profound talent in that you have expressed joy throughout these pages that could be read as tragedy. When an author is able to find the hope in sorrow you know you are a master. Well doneIrish
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
Dearest Irish, you've just paid me one of the best compliments I could have received. You've read my story more than once. If that weren't enough, your comments about my writing have left me breathless. Thank you so very much.
oh wow - you are a WITCH!!! It must be magic - how you create such living, breathing characters and reveal them in such an incredible manner. Thank you so much for your work - I am enjoying it so greatly!
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
I've never been called a witch in quite such a flattering way before. Thank you! I'm utterly delighted that you've been enjoying my work.
I'm spellbound by your plot and your characterization. Here I sit with a migraine and feeling like my right eye is going to explode, but I can't stop reading. Breastlady
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
I'm sorry to read about your migraine (they're utterly wretched things.) And what a marvelous tribute to my story that you're intrigued enough to keep reading ... thank you.
Thank you for this. It was my 2nd reading, and I was glad to find lots of, "new," stuff that I'd forgotten.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
I don't think there's a better compliment than being told 'this is my 2nd reading.' Thank you very much.
