I have loved the written word since watching my mother’s fingers trace the lines of a book, luxuriating in riveting tales and well-turned phrases. Many a night I read until dawn, a plastic flashlight hidden under the covers to light the pages as I raced the rising sun to finish my latest must-read.
Since joining the HP fandom, I've been privileged to receive more than 50 awards, including Best Author (Quill to Parchment Awards) and Best Classic Author (Most Potente Passions). Among others, my stories have won awards for Best Hurt/Comfort (Spoils of War, Morning Has Broken), Best Novel Length (Calling Card, Guard…Check…Mate), Best One Shot (A Beach in Ireland), Best WIP (Saving a Death Eater, The Summoning), Favorite Overall Story (Complexities), and Readers’ Choice (A Quest of Paladins).
Aside from a judicious polish for formatting and egregious typos, I don't plan on revising my early work. Those stories are the stepping stones of my writing journey. Please note some stories contain adult content. None is more graphic than equivalent scenes in the television shows True Blood or Game of Thrones, and age appropriate warnings are posted.
I no longer write fanfiction prolifically. Like many fanfic authors, my focus has shifted to original work. A member of the Romance Writers of America and the Southern California Writers Association, I write under my name: Lin Thornhill.
My original story Verisimilitude published in Thoroughly Modern Monsters (Story Spring Publishing, 2013) reached the top 100 fantasy anthologies and broke into the top 10 in the UK the first month of release. Ben and Christine’s story will continue in 2016.
Fixation, my latest short story, slated for publication in J. Aldis’ anthology Immanence, with a winter 2015-2016 release, is particularly exciting as it anchors the Messengers of Inari novel series I’ve been developing for the past year.

Reviews for Guard... Check... Mate
Excellent start looking forward to more.
I LOVE the humor, those instances where a question leads to an answer and confusion follows!
"His erection twitched as he thought about burying himself deep within her… in one swift stroke. “Recently?”
“This morning,” was her breathless reply.
Snape stiffened in her arms, and his voice was harsh. “This morning?”
Ha!!! :D How great was that?!!!
LOVED IT! Because it is just that sort of humor that DOES happen in real life when you are wrapped in the arms of a new lover, one that you know will utterly transform your life. One that you laugh with over the misunderstandings of insecurities.
So thoughtfully written - truly a zen-like balance of the brutally ugly, sacredly joyful embrace of life.
Thank you!
I was so sad to see that Minerva and Severus would not have a chance to interact any further - yet, to see that Severus regretted her loss even more.
Amazing story!!! I'll be reading this over and over, I'm sure.
"Her contented sigh blew through him as a spring breeze gusts across a meadow, every strand of grass bending to the greater strength of the more powerful element. In such a way did his own body react to the witch in his arms, as if every filament of his being bent in acknowledgment of the truth of her words and her affection."
Ahhhhhh...that is such an evocative way to describe the true sense of contentment - the balm of loving that can fill us when we're truly at peace with someone else.
I'm loving your view of Hermione and Severus. I can't wait to finish this story and yet I feel that I will grieve when it is over.
Thank you for this...for my Sunday morning treat. :)
I just discovered this story. I loved it. How perceptive of you to write Snape as such a passionate character two years before DH was released. Great job!

I'm absolutely delighted you liked my characterization of Snape, most people focus on my ruthless Dumbledore (I've never been a big fan.) Thank you for reading and leaving me a review.
Simply wonderful!!! Thanks for a great read!!Missy aka

::curtseys:: Thank you very, very much. You've brought an enormous smile to my face.
It was heartbreaking to see so many deaths, and sad to see what kind of person Dumbledore really was.It was great to see how Hermione stayed by Severus's side while he was recovering. I was hoping that it would show him how she really feels, but I guess she has to show him. I have enjoyed this so much that I hate for it to end.

I don't think this conflict could end without many deaths ... truly it's a civil war in a tight-knit community. It was always going to be bloody and heart-rending. I did try to minimize it somewhat. As for Dumbledore, well, I've distrusted him since I read the second book and actively disliked him since the fifth. This story was my attempt to exorcise that view so I could write him benevolently elsewhere. I'm not sure it worked.Thank you, again, for your wonderful comments.
I think I'm enjoying this to much, I have to keep making myself take housework breaks so I can get somethings done. This chapter was such a delight, my favorite so far, and that's saying something.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
That's such a great compliment; thank you. I'm thoroughly enjoying your comments.
I am impressed by the intelligence of the characters, especially Ron and Harry who are usually written as a little dense. Wonderful chapter.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
I modeled Ron and Harry after several WWII veterans I had to interview for a documentary I've worked on in real life. Three or four of them were very young when the went into the service (as young as sixteen), and their experiences matured them very early. Could they still be buffoons? Of course, but when it mattered, they were entirely serious. Thanks for noticing that detail, in particular.
I am really enjoying this wonderfully written fic! I understand all too well how Hermione feels about her scars. Thanks to various operations during my life I have quite a few scars myself, 4 on my upper body alone. I am forever thankful that I have a wonderful loving husband who loves me for myself and isn't repulsed by the scars. Well done!!!Missy aka

I'm really touched that the emotional honesty of this scene speaks so personally to you. It's quite encouraging because I try to make the characters accessible. Congratulations on having such a wonderful spouse, I'm certain he's a lucky man.Thank you so much.
This is an incredible chapter. They are both damaged but not broken, and they have a very similar strength and courage. It was so touching when they realize that they can trust and depend on the each other.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
Thank you very much. It was the mirror scene which haunted me for months before I finally gave in a wrote the story. I'm so pleased it holds up.
Fascinating beginning. The characters are so rich and deep, like dark chocolate, With a beginning this beautiful and heartbreaking I am not sure I can put off reading the next chapter until tomorrow.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
Thanks. I do hope you enjoy the rest of the story.
Whoa. I'm blown away by the tenderness and sensuality of this chapter. I can't wait to keep on reading, as it looks like an awesome story. I like how you use wizarding idioms, though perhaps the 'keeping his thoughts Silencio'd' line was a bit much.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
First of all, thank you very much for the compliment, and I hope you continue to enjoy the story. This was my third story in the Potterverse, and I spent some of those formative months trying to create appropriate terminology. It's entirely possible that I was indulging in too much of a good thing, and I appreciate your pointing it out.
Wow, you pegged Dumbledore's sneakiness and ruthlessness before book 7 came out.

I wasn't a fan of Dumbledore's for a long time, and it was a bit gratifying when JKR showed his true self.I'm glad you're enjoying the story, and thank you for leaving a comment.

Mind-blowing, as usual. I like that Harry is mature enough to realise what's going on, and that Severus has found an ally in the most unlikely person. What saddens me a little is that your version of Dumbledore is probably the one I believe the most. Off to the next!

It's fascinating to read your reactions to the story these two years after it was written. I've long been bothered by the trio's characterizations in the series because these three, specifically, would be more mature than your standard teenager (which is something JKR strives to maintain.) So I've extrapolated, especially because I think Harry/Hermione/Ron's friendship is almost a character in and of itself. It's that premise I've built on here, and I'm so pleased you like them for it.As for Dumbledore, well, I've disliked him since the end of book two, and I've long thought he was the major contributing factor in Tom Riddle's rise to power, which is why he thinks it's his responsibility to stop him.Thank you for your comments, I can't tell you how encouraging they've been.

That's great to hear! On my side, it's just so interesting to read your responses because they've all been spot on with how I see JKR's characters. I was quite young when I first read the books; I remember receiving the fourth book as a present from my parents for winning an award at school! Now, having read through them again as a (hopefully) more mature person, I find myself editing my own perceptions of characters which I first liked (or didn't like). I really loved Dumbledore at first, but by the time the sixth book came around I'd read the books a few times and I thought, 'well, actually, I'm not too sad to see him go.' I thought DH glorified him at the end and a lot of the seemingly negative aspects of his history didn't surprise me one bit. I'd always believed that there was more to his involvement with both Tom Riddle and Grindelwald than JKR had suggested. It didn't surprise me one whit that Harry had to die. I began to realise how Dumbledore seemed to consider everything as a chess game when I reread the ending of the first book when I turned sixteen. The fact that he had knowingly led the trio into danger was just mind-boggling. After that I really began to progressively lose respect for him. I think JKR tries too hard to make the trio 'a normal bunch of teenagers' which, I feel, almost trivialises who they are and what they've had to suffer and what they've achieved. I'm glad that someone else has noticed this and taken it into their own hands, as it's probably only in fanon now that I'll ever read what I feel to be the 'true characters' of Harry Potter, which is like the irony of ironies!

This was amazing. The depth of emotion, the tension and the electricity between them was so palpable I felt like I was truly there. This has just been stunning so far. Still reading, still in awe.

Wow, what a stunning start. I like your Hermione; not quite canon but completely believable. I probably prefer her this way, really. Off to the next chapter! Well done.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
I quite see your point about Hermione's character. She's closer to the canon Hermione of two books ago, which is when I wrote this story. HBP and DH had to dumb her down to fit Ron and allow Harry his moments of glory.Having said that, I'm thrilled you're enjoying the story despite this, and thank you for the review.
Response from bellarossi (Reviewer)
Completely agreed. I thought Hermione was definitely at her strongest in OotP. After that she was kind of relegated to the 'characters I need to force into a relationship' column when JKR wrote HBP and that was about it. Which is a huge huge disappointment, because I like Hermione about ten times more than I like Harry, and Hermione/Ron is just plain wrong no matter how you look at it. Even in DH, I felt she could have played a much stronger role, and at times she was there really just so that someone could come up with ideas and haul the boys out of danger rather conveniently. That just bothered me. Which is probably why I don't like DH or HBP all that much! You're most welcome for the reviews. I don't often review on every chapter; in fact, I think this is the first time I've ever done it for a completed fic. However, I noticed that you didn't have many reviews, but more importantly, each and every chapter prompted me to mention something or another, so credit to you for that. I'm juuust about to finish, but I have enjoyed this immensely and I'll hopefully move on to another one of your stories if I have time!

Well, you already know how I feel by now. :P I'm sad that the next chapter is the last, but there are always more stories to read! Off to the last.

I love this. The way you've rendered their lives is exquisite. Interesting that Arthur is the most perceptive, and that Remus was so deeply affected by it.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
Thank you very, very much. Considering their sacrifices, I hoped they might find Elysium together.I've long thought Arthur an unrecognized here, especially after reading the way he handled his colleagues during the Triwizard Tournament. He stood up to them when his kids were in danger, and I admired him for it.

Yet another wonderful chapter. Dumbledore is so duplicitous. It's too bad more people aren't on to him.
Response from Bambu (Author of Guard... Check... Mate)
I'm one of those people who hasn't liked him since the end of the second book, so I knew I'd have to write him as a Machiavellian at some point. I'm very pleased you don't think I'm overbroad in the characterization. Thank you.
