Reviews for Sage
What an amazing tale you've written. One twist after another... and just when I think I have figured out what is going on, here comes the next unexpected twist in the road. When Rose accused her mother of having been in love with Severus Snape, "You were falling in love with him before you even got there!” my first thought was a "loud" and triumphant, "Ah ha! I knew it!"But then Hermione said, “No, I wasn’t” And then I'm thinking WTF? Another twist in the road! And right about now you're pretty proud of yourself, aren't you? Umm hmm, I can tell. And well you should be! This is great writing and so much fun to read!!!Beth

So, for the lst three years Hermione has been searching for Severus, and yet she would not allow herself to consider that a marriage to Ron would not be the best thing for either of them. But Ginny knew...And now Viktor has sent her proof that the object of her obsession/affection is alive and well in France. And, OF COURSE, she is going to Paris to seek out the love of her life... (That's what I would do!)Yes, I am enjoying your story thus far!!! Great chapter!!! Beth

Ginny is the friend every woman should have, and I cannot stand it whenshe is made out to be someone who would cut Hermione off merely for dismissing her brother. Ginny was never shown to be close to Ron in canon, so why should she latch onto that family connection now? *sigh* Anyhow - you didn't ask for a tangent!Thank you for reviewing, m'dear!

Was Hermione pregnant with James when she left England for France? Is Severus James' father? In Chapter One, Rose spoke of James as her best friend, Uncle Harry had apologized that he hadn't come to the funeral, Hugo had said that James had never been much for family functions and that he had not been close to their parents. Then in this chapter, Rose thought again about James' seven months long absence. She recalled that "her parents had been unusually quiet on the subject. Her father hadn't said anything when James first went missing," and her mother "had said that he would come back when he was ready; that no one was to take it personally if he had things to do that he couldn’t confide in them. She had said James was on a personal journey and that he would be an improved version of himself upon return. She’d said it with such confidence that Rose had stared at her, utterly gobsmacked, until her father had told her to pull her chin up and not say another word about it." Before I'd begun to read this chapter, I thought that there was more to James than just that he was a cousin. Then in this chapter, Rose says that she and James were more like siblings.... And now I'm wondering if James found out about his real parents. Hummmm... I've got so many questions and am not sure of my suspicions. Now that Hermione has lit the sage candle, she is ready to tell her daughter about her long absence before she had married her father.
And I have got to get onto Chapter Four. This story is so well written. I see why everyone has been raving about it on LJ.

I just remembered that James wasn't old enough for my "theory" to be valid, so.... I'll just shut up and read. 8^)But maybe I'm not too far off the mark...? Gosh! You're a great writer!
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
James is actually Harry & Ginny's oldest son; he's Rose's cousin and big brother figure here in Sage. A very interesting theory, though! I do like it. :-) I will clear up now that Severus did not father any children with Hermione. That was a pet theory of quite a few reviewers for a while before I cleared it up on my LJ. I am absolutely thrilled that you are enjoying it. Thank you, again, for your attention to detail. I am also very grateful to Subversa and Shug for rec'ing it on their journals; they're very kind.

“Uncle Harry?” she asked impulsively as she put her hand on the doorknob. “Do you know anyone who has a doe Patronus?”...“Yes,” he said. “My mother did.”“Oh,” Rose said, a bit disappointed. When I read this I got the shivers. Rose did not know, but Harry did... and so did I. This could only have been Severus Snape's Patronus! As I thought on this, I was of two minds. On the one hand I am always predisposed to Severus and Hermione sharing their lives forever. But in this story, Hermione had been married to Ron and they had raised two fine children. What would their marriage have been like if both of them had known that a part of Hermione's heart still belonged to another? Could Ron have been willing to share her heart with another? Granted, her body was Ron's, but could he have been happy, showing no rancor, with the knowledge that Hermione loved Severus, too?And on top of all this, knowing that Rose is going to confront her mother about those five missing years made me fear for the mother and daughter's relationship. How, at her tender age, could Rose understand that real life is seldom neat and never perfectly sorted? That sometimes people make compromises in order to lead a satisfying life, that total bliss is rarer than hen's teeth, and that something is better than nothing. Then I find out that Hermione will be part of a delegation from the Ministry that will go to France to meet with the group who had pioneered this variant of Veritaserum, and Severus Snape was surely a member of that group. What’s the harm? was the thought in her mind as she walked into the house, up the stairs, to her room… as she touched the blue box that sat by her bed… What’s the harm? What's the harm, indeed? Rita Skeeter will be the least of her problems.Lordy! This is good!Beth

Oh, I am so enjoying your reviews. Such depth and attention to detail! Thank you. This is truly the best kind of payment I could ask for.You ask some excellent questions which, considering the last chapter is in the queue here on TPP, I hope I will have answered to your liking. So glad you're enjoying it, Beth. *hugs*
Sage has been on my "to read list" for a long time now, but because I've been reading so many WIPs, I have only just started reading it.This opening chapter is so full of wistfulness and longing that it has captured my heart. I know the last chapter has been written, and the time is now right for me to enjoy what so many others have already been enjoying.I look forward to finding out what Hermione Granger-Weasley's secret life has been for all these years past. With any luck, I hope to finish reading it this weekend.Thank you for sharing this wonderful story with us.Beth

I agree with one of your replies to a review. Love can take many forms. She had experienced love and passion in a destructive manner, and so she found herself deserving that kind of love that comes from a deep friendship, the kind that forgives and forgets everything. Great mother/daughter dialogues.I am eagerly waiting the next update!

Exactly. You hit the nail on the head -- thank you for sharing your impression; I enjoy when people "get"it. :) And I'm very pleased that you enjoy Rose and Hermione's discussions. Hopefully, I will have another chapter for everyone within a week - chapter twenty is coming along very slowly. But it will come!

A cure for lycanthropy; so that's what he was working on. I have always followed the mantra if you want to be happy in marriage, marry your best friend (I did). And Hermione knew that too. Another wonderful, outstanding chapter. I will wait till you are finished to print the entire story for my "favorite stories" book.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
There are different kinds of love and different desires, and for Hermione and Ron, they chose correctly. I am pleased that you are enjoying the story, and I am quite honored at the impending inclusion in your "favorites" book!

Another stunning chapter. Now I really want to know what will happen when Hermione goes back to France--but I have a feeling I sort of know already. ;) My heartstrings fluttered a little when Hermione realised that he was working on the cure for lycanthropy; so many regrets. I guess it's not a good idea to live with that much regret. I hope she resolves her feelings soon.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Hermione had no regrets, and I have not written this well if that is the impression here. As she "thinks" here, it doesn't absolve him, but his trips now have a purpose, so it readjusts the situation in her mind. Thank you, as always, for reading and reviewing!
Response from bellarossi (Reviewer)
No no, I do understand that. It isn't your fault, I think I phrased it wrong. Hmm, now I can't think of the word. Damn and blast. Oh well. Thank you for correcting me, though. :)

Rose doesn't quite get it, and I think I sort of do. They decided it was what they wanted, not a grand passion, but a deep abiding love. Although Kingsley is not playing nice. Oh, well. This should be quite interesting.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Exactly. Alas, Kingsley is completely oblivious of their relationship -- it is mere coincidence that he's the agent of change here. And I very much hope that you find the last chapters interesting!

I am looking forward to when Hermione is finally honest with herself. I know one can argue she has been irrevocably honest in this chapter but, I am sorry I do not believe it. Yes, she loved her husband, she married her best friend and childhood sweetheart but, she was not "in love" with him. I will not go so far as to say her children were a mistake but, I think she should have given him that one more chance and I am hoping that is what she does now that Ron is gone. Irish

This is as close as it comes to giving reasons I can accept for Hermione and Ron getting together and having a marriage that worked.Somehow, the phrase "when one door closes..." comes to mind. Rose needs to go to France. Maybe Hermione does, too. Maybe it would be better if Rose went first and someone else came to England?

He absolutely deserved for Hermione to leave. Unless there is a grownup inside him, somewhere, he's probably blaming Hermione for it. I'm glad she's done being a doormat.I'm actually rooting for Ron. I never root for Ron. I generally kill Ron.You must write a good story if you can get me to do that.

So why did the silly sod not *tell* her what he was doing? I love the idea of him faithfully watching her career, congratulating her on her promotion etc, despite her not replying. Some might characterise it as stalking, I suppose, but it sounds very Severus-ish.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
It is Severus-ish -- I don't see it so much as stalking as how it is when you occasionally look someone up to see how they are. Thank you, as always, for reading and reviewing!

It sounds like she will have a month to herself, to be alone and to grieve before she needs to face him. She's asked for a while, so hopefully one month is long enough. I'm interested to see how she responds to him. Hearing Claire mention "Uncle Severus" shines a light on why Hermione didn't let her family get close to Cosette's. At some point Severus would have seen Hermione's family, and that is too much for Hermione.
