Thank you for reading and reviewing -- I am thrilled that you have enjoyed the story so much. Alas, the last chapter is slow coming, something that is sadly compounded by the fact that work this week is absolute hell -- there's a huge event on Saturday that I've been responsible for planning. Rest assured, I will do my best to produce a satisfying last chapter as soon as possible. I beg everyone's patience.

Oh! You evil little Vixen! Please do not tell me you kill Severus! He can be ill and she can go to him but, pleaase do not let him die not without knowing how much she truly loves him (oh, God! I just realized that is almost a direct quote from a line in the movie Anne of Avonlea... you probably have never heard of it) Well done but, I am dying for more. Irish
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Oh, I know Anne of Avonlea! And my mother read me the books, too. :-) As to your other notes... *remains mum* Thank you for reading and reviewing, m'dear, as always.

Hullo, dear. I'm very pleased that you enjoyed the chapte. Sage has been a long journey, and it's been wonderful to have you along for the ride. And yes - one more chapter left.

I really enjoyed this chapter :) It just feels right having this break after the long tale of Hermione and Severus past love.Claire and Rose meeting was moving, thanks for writing it!I wonder if Claire's sick uncle is Severus, and I'm curious about Rose and Scorpious..You wrote a nice "next generation", and I simply love all the new characters. Great job!
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
I'm so pleased that you enjoyed the chapter, and I'm especially glad that Claire and Rose's meeting didn't come off as being too contrived or melodramatic. I'm also inordinately happy that you enjoyed all the new/"next gen" characters. Thank you for reviewing!

See this is the trouble with reading on LJ, then when it hits the archives I think its a new chapter. I reread it anyway just for fun. If you kill off Severus I will be so upset LR!

Read this chapter on Ashwinder yesterday (which I thought was brillant) and you answered everyone questions with *thank for reviewing*. There were a lot of questions....you are going to surprise all of us with a "not so happy ever after" which is real life. Or as the Great John Lennon said: "life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans".
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
I do usually enjoy dialoguing with readers about their questions, but... do you really expect me to answer questions or give hints about the very last chapter? :-) Thank you for your consistent reviews and support. I appreciate it greatly.

How can you even think for one second that anybody did not love this chapter? It was brilliant - but if you don't update soon, I will have to find a way to crawl through these internet cables to strangle you: such an evil cliff! I bet the ill uncle is Severus...
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Not to liken myself to a published author, but the question "Where's Severus?!" looms for many readers here in this chapter much as the question "Where's Edward?!" loomed for Twilight readers while reading New Moon. But yes, I am quite pleased that you enjoyed it. :-) The last chapter is slow coming. It is always difficult to write the last chapter, and that's compounded by the fact that this week of work is going to be hellish. I'll do my best.

Wow, when I read Clair DuBois (before you revealed who she was) I literally went, 'DuBois... DuBois.. OH MY GAWWWWD' hahaha. Interesting that you changed things a little, but I still loved it just as much as the rest of the story. Hard to believe it's almost finished though! I can't wait for a Hermione/Severus reunion-- I would love to see how that goes. I think this story is hands down the best rendering I've seen of JKR's epilogue (crapilogue), and I'm so happy that you've made something so wonderful out of it. So props for that. Now I shall wait for the next chapter very impatiently!

Thank you, honey. You have no idea how much your words mean to me! I am thrilled that everyone is on tenterhooks up to the final chapter. I will, however, take my time in an attempt to get it right. (Also, work this week is going to be hell.) *hugs*

Interesting chapter. Please don't leave us hanging too long to find out what the letter's about. Severus didn't reply yet and Claire mentioned her uncle being sick, so it makes me nervous that Severus was one of the sick ones. Great story. I plan to reread the whole thing once it's finished.

Thank you for reading and reviewing -- it is appreciated! I am working on chapter twenty-one -- it is, however, the very last chapter, which is always difficult to write, and that is made doubly difficult by the fact that there is an event for work this week which is the culmination of a summer-long project. Rest assured, I will do my best to get the last chapter out soon!

cruel fate! to have the meeting cancelled, so she'll have to get all worked up again later on. and cruel author, to leave with the cliffhanger letter. i sincerely hope you will update quickly and not leave us hanging too long! i did enjoy the chapter. interesting coincidence, that james and claire should meet, etc.

That was quite interesting, actually. I enjoyed it, and it was nice to see snippet of real time life there.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Thank you! I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I think that others will enjoy it more, perhaps, once the story is complete and they know where/how Severus is. Thank you for reading and reviewing, as always.

Thank you for another wonderful chapter, although it makes my heart ache. Of course, we sometimes wonder why people stay in a relationship that obviously destroys them - but I guess it takes an awful lot to bring you so deep down that your survival instinct kicks in. It looks as if Hermione is near that point now.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Yes, Hermione is near that point. Thank you so much for reading and reviewing -- I know this isn't a typical HG/SS, and I appreciate readers sticking with it for so long.

*Quibbles with trembling lips* Why is Severus such a foold. I know he loves her, but he cannot admit it. I see the psychology of the man so clearly he has been abandoned and used so many times before that he is afraid to let his feeling be known. He is so like my Eagle. Irish

This is so good, and so sad. He's an intelligent man - he must know what he's doing; it goes beyond the usual emotional illiteracy issues. All too believable, though.

I do believe Severus deserved to be slapped after that last remark. He told Hermione that she was an object to be used, rather than a true lover. This is rapidly becoming a train wreck.*peers through fingers clasped over eyes*
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)

I can so see why she left him - I care for you and the fucking is good - I would have left then and there but to each his own. This is a good story.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
I cringed when that line came out. "They're gonna hate me" was the first thing that went through my head, I think. Anyhow - *clears throat* - I greatly appreciate your taking the time to read and review, as always!

Another wonderful chapter. I can see the tension really building and, like Rose, it's easy to forget that she still married Ron and had kids and all that. I think your characterisation of Severus is spot-on, especially because even if he DID love her, it would only give him all the more reason to push her away. And I'm enjoying the very snarky and suave Severus that often gets lost in many SSHG fanfics. Do continue! :)
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Thank you, dear. I'm so glad that you are still finding aspects of him to enjoy amidst his bastardly ways -- I enjoy exploring this side of Snape, but it is pure torture for readers who so adore him. I appreciate the review! :)

He makes me want her to end it. And I totally agree with Rose, by the way.

I do, too. The next chapter is the last in the "past" timeline. Thank you for reading and reviewing!

What a sad chapter, and the story will be sadder still I expect. I wonder after all the time has past if she still has feelings for him.

I don't know if I've left a review before, but had to comment about this chapter.Even though I know from the beginning of the story that Severus and Hermione weren't together the whole time, this disintegration of their relationship is pure torture! On one hand I am appalled that Hermione puts up with the conditions of the relationship but on the other I think Severus should have the right to be the way he is comfortable with. But, even though she loves him, or lusts him, it just seems so wrong to give and give of herself and only get a shell of him in return. This is becoming the story I love to hate! Great writing!
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Thank you so much for taking the time to comment! It means more than you know. The story you love to hate? I will accept that title with gleeful joy! :) Also, you're absolutely right -- it does seem wrong to give of herself so much and receive so little in return.I understand the "pure torture" part -- I've gone back and forth on the "Is it too much? Am I doing it right?" question. Rest assured, the next chapter (which is stubbornly refusing to cooperate) is the last "past" chapter.
Response from Darque Hart (Reviewer)
I've never been in a relationship like this one, but I would have to say that you are writing it very well. After all, Hermione has to reach a point in the 'give and take' to realize she is to the one giving and not getting back what she needs. Sure, he's there and the sex is great and they go out with mutual acquaintances ... but there is him and there is her, but there’s not really an ‘us’. Right now, I can't tell if he thinks of her as a convenient sex toy or if he actually cares about her. After all, she's been the one doing all the chasing. He hasn't anything invested in this except giving her entrance to his cottage!
Not to mention this mysterious ‘job’ that takes him away for so long. Obviously, he’s not a long-distance truck driver! Is it as mundane as buying trips for potion ingredients? Somehow, I doubt that as much as I do him being a trucker.

What a bastard! I think the reason why I am enjoying this story so much is that I see so many parallels between their relationship and my relationship. Your Snape seems to have a similar attitude as my significant other which gets incredibly frustrating. At least he doesn't leave for long periods of time.
Response from lady_rhian (Author of Sage)
Yes, he is. I am - pleased is the wrong word. That the story has touched an emotional chord with readers -- I am grateful for that. It means that the story is coming across well. Sadly, it also means that a lot of us have saddled ourselves with sometimes impossible men. Thank you for reading and reviewing, as always!

Oh, the terrible moment of realization that the arrangement of the moment isn't enough. Wondering if he could ever lover her as much as he loved the ghost in his heart. You present the questions and the doubts very well.Heartbreakingly well.
